The athlete list for the state titles has been announced and a bit disappointing there are only 5 105kg competitors (me & 4 others). That being said the guys who are competing are all top guys. 3 of them I haven't competed against before (1 of them won the 90kg nationals last year) & the other is the guy I narrowly beat at my first comp.
My goal for the comp is to finish top 2 (top 3 qualify for national)

In other news my gunz are now 17" :D

Training went well today. I did a full run at just a bit below comp weight & did it comfortably. Did 285kg yoke for 20m then 105kg farmers walk for 20m back in decent time.
Next week I will do a full run with comp weight. My breathing was alot better today & I was fresher so that really helped.
I also loaded a 120kg atlas stone to about 1.7 metres which is about as high as I can go (I was on my tippy toes & just managed to get it over).
Only 3 weeks till the comp now!

Did my last session before next Saturday's state titles today. Did the 305kg yoke easily but then still couldn't finish the farmers which was frustrating.
I've now learnt to continental clean without resting the axle on my belt (as we can't do this in the comp now). Did a 115kg clean & press today then cleaned 120kg but couldn't press it.
Also did some more stone technique work and a 11 metre run with 135kg per hand farmers walk at the end of the session.

Will rest up the rest of the week just doing a bit of cardio tomorrow through wednesday.

Will get videos of the comp and post them up as usual.

Medley - 305kg (672lb) yoke for 20 metres then 120kg (264lb) per hand farmers walk for 20 metres. Did it in 40 seconds - 1st place.

GkNRH2XsFk8

Dumbbell one arm overhead press - 57kg (125lb). Got 10 comfortable reps which gave me the win so stopped (still had more time left & more reps in me) - 1st place.

licjuBpNtps

Axle clean & press (max weight) - only managed 115kg (253lb) - 2nd place.

hXriPe76X3U

Car deadlift - weight was said to be 240kg (529lb) at the handle (didn't feel that heavy). I got 17 reps (vid only shows last 14 reps) - 1st place.

z4uD1g3WauA

Stone for height - 130kg (286lb) - bombed out

You made the local news: Strongmen weigh in for titles (http://www.thechronicle.com.au/story/2010/06/14/strongmen-queensland-state-titles-weigh-in/)

TEN of Queensland's biggest and strongest huffed and puffed at the Gladstone Hotel on Saturday as the Strongman Queensland State Titles took place.

There were two categories of competition -- a lightweight 105kg or under category and the heavyweight category.

The event started around 11am with four men in the lightweight category groaning under the pressure of lifting a 305kg super yoke 20m, followed by carrying a 120kg weight in each hand for a further 20m.

For the six men in the heavyweight category, the weights just got heavier and heavier.

Promoter and organiser of Strongman Queensland Joel Malone said the event pulled together some of the best athletes in Queensland.

"These men have looked fear and pain in the face and fear ran away," he said.

Winner of the heavyweight category was Mark Wells and in the lightweight category it was David Parmiter.

Both men qualified for the Strongman Australian nationals which will be held later this year.

The winner of the Strongman Australian nationals receives a 'pro card', which enables them to compete professionally throughout the world.

Yeah was a fun comp. There'll be a 105kg class at the Nationals in November & i'll be competing in it.
Plan is to keep training hard & putting on bodyweight & start training with implements about 10 weeks out from the event.

Did deads from the floor for the first time in a while tonight - did 240kg x 5 reps (last rep hitched), then dropped down to 220kg and tried something new & I think I'm onto something that will increase my deadlift. Watch this space as next week I will try for 242.5kg x 5 reps (no hitching) which if I get will be an all time best for me :)

First time benching fresh in over a month tonight - did 137.5kg (300lb) x 3 reps then did 140kg x 3 reps. Wanting to hit 160kg next time I max out.

Rest of the workout was:

Incline BB bench (slow negative & pause at chest) - 65kg x 12, 10, 8
Weighted dips - +20kg x 12, 10, 6
Overhead DB extensions - 35kg x 13, 10
Overhead tricep extension machine - 2 sets

Haha inclines are done for hypertrophy not strength mate ie high incline, real slow negative, long pause at chest etc.

Did some decent push press today - 90kg x 8, 100kg x 6, 110kg x 1 (shoulders fried by this point)

Other stuff was DB shoulder press, L lateral raises & cable side lateral raises.

Can't wait till deadlifts on Monday!!!

Smashed a long standing deadlift PR tonight - did 242.5kg x 5 reps with some in reserve. My "secret weapon" was simply wearing a belt. I'd only ever worn a belt on deads once years ago & hated it but now I wear my workout partners thinner, less stiff belt and it really helps with my lockout.
Plan from here is to max out in 3 weeks (just before I go on my New Zealand holiday). Next week i'll try 255kg x 4 reps, then the following week either 265 x 3 or 275 x 2, then if things go well i'm looking at 285kg for a max (or at the very least 280kg which would be a 5kg PR).

Awesome deadlifts Dave. If you get the 285 when you max and who knows maybe more!!, do you think there's a chance you could get 300 by the end of the year especially if the belt is helping you at lockout?

Thanks mate, I doubt i'll get 300kg by years end but if I get the 285kg in 3 weeks I think i'll go close. The belt helps alot at lockout & that's my weakness. Also once I do more training sessions with the belt things will only get better. I'm excited at what might lay ahead.

Hit my goal of 255kg x 4 reps on deadlifts tonight (despite still being hungover from the weekend). Maybe a slight hitch on the last rep but still happy. Will attempt 275kg x 2 next week then if I get that will max at 285kg in 2 weeks time.

Really strong deadlifts, the first rep looked like it was a feather weight for you and nothing wrong with the last rep. It might have felt like you hitched it but it was smooth all the way. You leaned back quickly after it was locked out but definitely no hitch.

Thanks guys.

Benching tonight - missed the 145kg x 3 (as I expected). Then I did 150kg x 2 reps (lifted my butt on the second rep.
Think i'll max out next week & either go for 157.5kg or 160kg.

Ordinary push press today - 107.5kg x 5 reps (wanted 6). My technique still sucks, I have trouble pushing back over my head enough, though got the technique nailed on one of the reps in my 110kg set & it felt excellent & really strong. Will keep working on it.
Big week next week - Monday i'll attempt 275kg x 2 on deads & Tuesday i'm maxing on bench at either 157.5kg or 160kg.

07-12-2010, 03:32 AM

You mean compete in powerlifting? I do strongman comps these days but may do a small push/pull comp at a mates gym when it opens (want to get 160kg bench/290kg dead for a 450kg total)

I then did 162.5kg (358lb) and got it but it was a bit messy as my butt lifted off the bench.

Cheers mate but 700kg is a while off. I just can't get my squat right - low bar is strong for me but I lean too far forward on the descent & struggle to hit depth. High bar I hit good depth but lean forward on the way up so not good form, it's getting frustrating.

Have 6 meals a day most days mate. Chicken, rice, lean mince, pasta, 2% milk, bread etc. Probably have about 3,500 calories a day. I'm trying to slowly put on weight.
Also normally have one dirty meal a day (KFC, Maccas) & one shake a day with milk, raw eggs, natural peanut butter, banana & milo.

Good & bad on deadlifts tonight - first I tried 285kg (628lb) and got it cleanly and with room to spare. Then I put 290kg (639lb) on & was too tired to get it cleanly but with a bit of a hitch it went up fairly comfortably.
I weighed in at 94kg (207lb) for the lifts.
Goal from here is a very lofty one - I want to hit 300kg in December at the CAPO National Deadlift Comp.

Got back from NZ on Wednesday after a sweet holiday (skiing, snowboarding, 134m bungy jump, 300m arc swing, jet boat, wine tour, pub crawl) but am still quite sick. Plan to get back into the weights on Monday at a sweet new gym that is opening near my place (2 deadlift platforms, DBs to 90kg, Hammerstrength machines, prob some strongman gear too).
Bit unsure of which direction I want to take now - there's alot of crap going on between the strongman feds these days so not really focused on that now. If I can fix my squat & hit decent numbers on it, and fix my uneven lockout on bench I'll probaby do a full powerlifting meet & see how I go. I may even be tempted to cut down & have a crack at the 82.5kg class National IPF deadlift record of 295kg.

Sounds like a sweet holiday, mate. I still have to check NZ out, looks pretty good.

New gym sounds badass too. Wish I had a gym like that near me.

Cut down to 82.5? What are you weighing now? 94kg? Do you reckon you could do it without losing strength? I don't know much about cutting but that seems like a lot. But yeah, def do a PL meet. I wanna see an even more massive DL from you man!!

Yeah Queenstown is nice mate, would recommend it.

I highly doubt i'll cut down was just sick today & coming up with options. Although weight drops off me crazy fast & i'd have no trouble losing the 11ish kg if I wanted without losing too much strength.

I'll try to deliver with the deadlift, I want 300kg at the CAPO National Deadlift comp in December. If I can't get it I'll definately hitch 300 before years end!
You got any comps coming up?

My cut lasted a whole week, lol. Cutting sucks ass, that's all I can say.

Yeah I'll probably do the CAPO dead comp in melbs as well. Hopefully be pulling 600+ by then.

300kg would be fkn sick man. Whats the record in your weight div?

Nice anything over 600lb is a great deadlift. What's your max now?

I think the raw record is 325kg in the 90kg category. Equipped record is 347.5kg.

I reckon I'm good for 550 (250kg) at the moment. I've added around 35lbs to my 5RM in the past month so I reckon I could improve another 50lbs by december no probs. but who knows how slow progress will be from here.

Anyways, new program looks solid. Looks a lot more fun than Madcows lol

At the new gym now & it's great. Did deads on a Texas style bar last night which ripped the crap out of my hands with it's intense knurling. I've used a similar bar in a comp before & loved it but don't like it for rep work so may go back to a 'normal' bar. Strength was way down on deads but as I took 2 weeks off & am currently sick guess it's to be expected.
Benched tonight and tried new form where I stayed alot tighter under the bar and used a wider grip. I'm weaker with the wider grip but if I can take the ego hit & stick with it I should be stronger in the long run.
Also going back to scratch on my squat form this week too. So not really going to enjoy lifting for the next little while but I need to think of the bigger picture.

Deads are still solid - did 240kg x 5 clean reps tonight. Will try 245kg x 5 reps next week which will be an all-time PR. Gotta push them so I hit 300kg before years end!

Got a CD today with some pics from my last strongman comp:

Deads were good tonight despite not feeling well. Got a PR of 245kg x 5 reps (all clean). I had "gastro" a few minutes before the lift but grinded them out, my lockout has improved out of sight with the use of a belt.
Next weeks goal is 257.5kg x 4 reps (then as the weeks go on 270kg x 3, 282.5kg x 2, 295kg x 1).

****ing terrible deads tonight, was weaker than a 12 year old girl!
I was sick last week & lost some weight but still tonight was pathetic! Everything felt heavy, speed was crap & lockout power was rubbish. Only just got 3 reps with 257.5kg when I should have got 4. Will eat the house down in the next week & shoot for 4 reps at 255kg next week (which I have done before).

Yeah it's just really frustrating mate cause based off last week I should have got 4 and now my plan is setback. Hopefully it was just one bad day & I can get back on track next week. They just didn't feel in the groove last night and I really hope it doesn't continue like that!

Squats are coming back nicely. Form is much improved now & I'm happy where it's at now.
Today I did:
155kg x 4
160kg x 3
170kg x 2
180kg x 1

All sets had room to spare & my mate (who won CAPO Nationals this year) was checking depth/form & said both were good.
Goal for years end is a 210kg squat to powerlifting comp depth.

I've also ditched the idea of squatting twice a week, just doing it heavy once a week & other exercise are leg press (unilateral Hammer Strength machine), good mornings, GHRs & weighted glute bridges.

Nice work on the squats. Is there anything particular that you've changed to improve your squat form?

Back to low bar, tighter upper back, elbows forward etc but the main thing that's helped is a slightly wider stance and pushing the knees out. The knee thing has made a big difference!

Well my deadlifts are well and truely ****ed!!!
Today I was even weaker than last week! I think all the weeks pulling close to max efforts has taken it's toll. From here I'm going to back off & do more rep work & leave some in the tank on all sets.
Will drop back to 220kg next week and see how many comfortable reps I can get & do a few sets. I won't be doing any all-out deads for a while now, think my CNS needs a break!

Training with less weight and doing more volume can feel strange when you've kept it low chasing rep maxes for a while, but it will pay off.

Btw, I saw your mate big Alan Kliese out shopping the other day. Told a couple of people I was with "see that guy, he's Australia's strongest man." It's a shame most people wouldn't know who he is.

Week 3 of Coan deadlift program tonight and deads are still farked! Only just got 250kg x 2 reps & just completed the 6 sets of 3 reps @ 207.5kg. Very pissed off seeing a couple of months ago I got a comfortable 275kg x 2 reps so I'm 25kg down on deads. Not sure where to go from here, eating more & sleeping more is a start and might have to abort the Coan program as I don't feel i'll complete next weeks workout. I just have no confidence with deads now & they don't feel "right" :(

Personally I aborted the P/C program also, I just was not doing well on it. I've been doing 5/3/1 for almost 3 months now and I think it is working well. Just gotta adjust the supplement/accessory work to your needs.

Although, I would say maybe you should stick it out to see how week 4 goes. A lot of people have said the same thing you have, but managed to hit week 4 anyway. After that you drop the circuit stuff and hit some heavier accessory. :D

I would say if you hit at least 1 good rep on week 4 then it went alright. I've tried the program twice now and did not finish it either time... I won't be trying it again.

You may adjust to it, but this is how I felt when I was pretty rundown. Deadlifts just weren't feeling right anymore and everything felt heavy. It felt like I lost my groove and they just felt awkward.

What else are you doing besides the P/C day and you said a benching day after that? Are you still doing any light squats, etc?

Stongman Nationals have been announced and they will be held near Melbourne on 22nd/23rd January.
Tentative events/weights are as follows (for the under 105kg category):

Super Yolk /Car Walk 310 kg.

Log / overhead medley. Max overall wht. 120 k.g. 4 to five implements.

Deadlift / Cart Lift max or reps.

Farmers walk / car wheel barrow. @ 250 at handles.

Throw for height / max kegs over bar. 25k.g / 35 kg

Stones. To 192 k.g.

Most events should be okay for me although I won't be able to budge the 192kg stone (no one will imo) & doubt i'll get the one before it which will probaby be 164kg.

I start event training Saturday week and have already started bulking.

My deadlift is still way down but bench was good tonight & I'll be doing some log presses on Friday & trying to improve my technique.

Weight is around 92kg at the moment. I'd like to be up around 96/97kg at the comp.

Deadlifts are starting to come back - I completed week 7 of the Coan routine last night which included 265kg x 2 reps (only just got) & 3 sets of 222.5kg x 3 reps. Also did two 5 rep sets of 124kg lat pulldown.
Next week calls for a double at 280kg which will never happen, if I can get one rep at 280 i'll be happy.

Yeah a few months ago I pulled an easier 275kg x 2 but still not far off. They still just don't feel right at the moment but at least they're coming back. It's only 4 weeks now till the National Deadlift comp, which is also a push/pull event in QLD so i'll probably bench as well.

Benching last night - did 125kg x 7 (t&g) then 135kg x 4 paused then 145kg x 2 paused then just missed my second paused rep at 150kg. Have narrowed my grip even more now to where it's only shoulder width - that's where I seem to be strongest.

Did a 310kg yoke for 20m with no drops and did 125kg per hand farmers walk for 20m with no drops & a fast time.
Really happy as I didn't expect this after the big break from event training.

Good strongman session this afternoon!
Did 315+kg yoke for 20m in 22 seconds which was an 8 second improvement over last week & for the first tine ever the weight felt pretty light.
Then did some 130kg farmers walk (the farmers I use in training are big log ones & much harder than any other farmers I've ever used) & did 2 separate 20m runs with no drops in okay time.
Only downside is since last week I've had a sore leg that feels like nerve pain, it flared up today & I was limping round but still able to complete all my training.

Still aiming for the 300kg pull at the DL comp? Definitely looks like you could do it or at least come very close to it.

I won't be competing at the one in melb. My DL sucks balls at the moment. Wouldn't be much point. But good luck for your meet man.

300 would be nice but it's a stretch. My second attempt will 290 - 295kg & if I get it I'll put 300 on the bar & see how close I can get with it.

Had a decent strongman training session today. I've decided to enter the Heavyweight division of a little comp on the 11th December.
Events for that comp are:
* Farmers 120kg x 20m
* Medley - 280kg yoke x 20m & 150kg duckwalk x 20m
* Log clean & press for reps @ 110kg
* Full deadlift for reps @ 240kg
* Mystery event

Even though I'm competing in the Heavyweight division I'm planning on coming away with the win, either way should be interesting & a fun comp.

My best achievement today was finally lapping a 170kg atlas stone. This probably doesn't mean much to guys that haven't tried the stones but let's just say it was bloody hard!

Played it safe today at the CAPO National Deadlift comp (QLD) & came away with the win in the raw mens division & also did the biggest lift of the day. I weighed in at 91.8kg.
1st attempt was 252.5kg
2nd was 285kg (pretty easy)
3rd was 295kg (just missed at lockout)

Would have liked a PB but played it safe to get the win. Will get vids up later.

Had the strongman comp today where I competed in the heavyweight division (I was actually the lightest competitor in the whole comp including the 105kg class guys).
I wasn't happy with my performance as I stuffed the farmers walk and timed frame hold but I still came away with the win.
I got first in the medley & deadlift, second in the farmers, third in the log press & forth I think in the frame hold.
Some vids of my better events:

Well it's definately been an interesting year for me lifting wise & definately my best year to date.

I won every competition I entered:
* March - Darling Downs Strongest Man <105kg (my first ever strongman comp)
* June - QLD State Strongman Titles <105kg
* December - QLD CAPO National Deadlift Comp
* December - Lawnton Strongman Comp (open division)

My first year in strongman has gone really well and I aim to one day compete internationally in it.

My lifts that increased:
* Deadlift: 275kg -> 291kg
* Bench: 150kg -> 160kg
* Squat: 180kg -> 200kg
* Push press: 100kg x 4 reps -> 112.5kg x 4 reps

Some notable strongman lifts:
* 320kg yoke for 20m comfortably
* Loaded a 162kg atlas stone over 1.2m high bar
* 125kg per hand farmers walk for 20m in just over 11 seconds

Goals for 2011:

* Win National Amateur Strongman Comp <105kg in January
* Win Australias strongest man <105kg (May I believe)
* 300kg raw deadlift
* 170kg raw bench
* 125kg log clean & press
* 350kg yoke x 20m
* 170kg atlas stone over 1.2m bar
* Get bodyweight to 100kg

Had a bad day at Nationals on Wednesday. Came equal 3rd on points but got 4th on a countback. The car deadlift was first & they made it too light (despite being weighed at 263kg @ the handles, I did 28 reps in 75 seconds then spewed up. The winner of that did 38 reps.
It took me at least 40 minutes to recover and finished the comp but went pretty crap in log lift & duck walk. Got 2nd in yoke & stones but it was too late by that stage.
I'll try to get some vids up in the next few days.

Starting to get back into training and shoulder is coming along well. I've had to get a lot of treatment and at the stage now where I'm gradually increasing weight on bench exercises. Also trying to put some weight back on now as well as I was doing a lots of cardio and running when I couldnt train much in the gym. Competed in Australia's Strongest Man Comp (105kg class) on the weekend where I finished equal first on points but had to accept 2nd place on a countback (3 wins to 2).

For any US guys reading this obviously the Australian 105 scene is nowhere near the standard of your comps and I know I'd get creamed over there (although would like to think I'd be competitive in the 90kg class).

Completed week 2 of the Coan deadlift program today, wasn't too hard except that I'm not used to that much volume - did 1 set x 2 reps @ 242.5kg then 8 sets x 3 reps @ 197.5kg (then 3 circuits of stiff legged deads/bent over rows/lat pulldowns/good mornings)

I've also started benching again (had about 6 months off) and gone to a wider grip & a better set up so I'm enjoying benching again. I'm hoping to put up a good powerlifting total at some stage next year, 700kg @ 90kg would be nice :)

Did my first three lift powerlifting meet in about 5 years today.
Weighed in yesterday at 82.4kg (~181lb) after my first time ever cutting weight (hot bath & saunas), normally walk around at 86-87kg (about 191lb). I felt like absolute crap after the weigh in and all night - headache, tired, no energy etc but woke up feeling pretty good this morning.

SQUATS: I have neglected these pretty much my whole time lifting & had heaps of form issues then late last year very bad tendonitis in my knee, I've been back squatting with a changed stance/style for about 8 weeks now. I really need to bring my squat up as it kills my total.

Attempt 1: 160kg (353lb) - easy opener, felt very fast & light - GOOD LIFT
Attempt 2: 180kg (397lb) - felt like I went pretty deep, lost a bit of tightness but fairly comfortable lift - GOOD LIFT
Attempt 3: 190kg (419lb) - felt pretty good think I had more in the tank - GOOD LIFT

BENCH: I have been back benching for 3-4 months after not benching for 18+ months while I was doing Strongman. I've made aot of form improvements/adjustments and it's starting to feel okay these days.

Attempt 1: 145kg (320lb) - very easy opener, fast & felt good - GOOD LIFT
Attempt 2: 158.5kg (349lb - my setup was crap and had terrible leg drive, more of a grind than it should have been - GOOD LIFT
Attempt 3: 162.5kg (358lb) - changed my feet setup (on toes instead of splaying feet) got lift up okay but apparently butt just came off bench - NO LIFT

DEADLIFT: Far and away my best lift, I've pulled 300kg (661lb) before in a deadlift only comp.

Attempt 1: 255kg (562lb) - fast, easy opener - GOOD LIFT
Attempt 2: 285kg (628lb) - felt a little harder than expected but looks pretty fast on video - GOOD LIFT
Attempt 3: 301kg (664lb) - wanted to go for a PR but knew it would be hard after the second attempt as I normally make big jumps in weight, got it to the knees easy but stalled badly - NO LIFT

TOTAL: 633.5kg (1397lb) @ 82.4kg (~181lb) Could/should have done better but was good experience & now have 13 weeks till Nationals where I'd like to hit 675kg (1488lb) total. Will start Sheiko in a weeks time.

Competed in the GPC Australia Nationals yesterday - raw (wraps).
Cut a little bit of weight to make sure I was under 82.5kg (181lb), ended up going 9 for 9 (didn't get any red lights the whole day) which is a first for me. My deadlift was a bit off but all in all happy with the meet.

SQUATS:
1st - 187.5kg (413lb) easy opener, first time using a monolift seemed easy to get used to [not in video]
2nd - 207.5kg (457lb) comp PR, fairly comfortable
3rd - 217.5kg (480lb) all time PR for me, bit of a grinder & ordinary form but made it

BENCH:
1st - 142.5kg (314lb) - easy opener
2nd - 155kg (342lb) - lost tightness a bit but no dramas getting it
3rd - 160kg (353lb) - comp PR & still had more in the tank I think

DEADLIFTS:
1st - 250kg (551lb) fast & easy but felt heavier than normal
2nd - 282.5kg (623lb) should have been easy but had to grind it a bit, it was a longish day & energy was low by now
3rd - 287.5kg (634lb) probably felt better than the 2nd attempt, bit of a grind but better than I thought considering

Ended up going 665kg @ 81.6kg (1466lb @ 179.9lb).
