I heard the Carpenters' "We've only just begun" on the radio the other day and half way through the song, I started balling my frickin' eyes out. I got home and my wife says, "What's wrong with you?" and I'm like "Nuffin'....sniff".
Am I the only '70's pu$$y here? I'm sure I was just caught in the wrong mood. What songs make you babble like an idiot? That song "Butterfly Kisses" gets me, too. It's a cruel song and I think they should ban it from the radio! All it does is turn dads into tubs of goo. Bastard's!

Butterfly Kisses kills me..My machismo gets thrown right out the window when my lil ones involved.

First of all,
I actually went to a Carpenters concert at Universal Studios Amphiteater when it was an open air venue. John Denver, too, come to think of it. The passing of both Karen Carpenter and John Denver brought me to tears.
Second of all,
I listen to country and there's a song that's been on the last couple of Christmas seasons. I don't know the title or the artist, but it is about a little girl who want to buy a pair of shoes for her dying mother for Christmas. In fact, I'm getting a little teary right now as I type this.
BTW, I don't listen to Country exclusively, I still like Classic Rock,
70's disco, Classical and everything in between except for gangsta rap.

Oh please .. that song is a killer ... I don't know the artist or the name but that song kills me ... this past xmas we heard it on the radio and it somehow caught the attention of my 5-year old son .. the poor kid starting getting all choked up .. he wouldn't let us turn it off ... see, now you got me going here !

Yeah, that should make anyone cry.
The one that gets me spouting tears like Niagara Falls is 'Empty Garden', Elton John's song for John Lennon. They were very good friends. It makes me think of what it would be like to go looking for a good friend who isn't there anymore.
Aw sh@#, I never should have started thinking about this.

I got two...
What's that? The Hardcore maniac bawling over some silly song?Yup.
"Sometimes When We Touch" by Dan Hill.I'm not even sure if he did the original,or covered it from someone else but that's the version I have.It destroys me.
This one is even more goofy...
"Coward of the County" by Kenny Rogers because it reminds me of my father and the kind of man he wanted me to become.I hope I am making him proud.

That one's not bad, but I think an even more sappy than that is "Wild Fire". Worse yet is that song "Seventeen". That song is so depressing, it took average teenage angst and made it an excuse for suicide.

Don't get me wrong...I like classic rock too but geez.....I'm setting here thinking of tomorrows chest workout (as I read this thread)where I humiliate the teens and twenty something's that hang out and take up space but I won't be doing it thinking about these "wus songs"!! OMG! I will get tacked to the floor the very second one of these tunes enter my mind! Tacked...NO....stapled to the floor is more like it. They will have to peel me off the mat.
Now lets turn this thread around shall we? I'll start:
Judas Priest: "Screaming for Vengence" "Turbo Lover" and who
could forget AC/DC "Highway to Hell" "Hells Bells"? Ozzie anybody?? "Crazy Train" Ted Baby (my personal fav for bench) "Cat Scratch Fever" tunes like these won't bring tears to your eyes true.....maybe the other guy as he runs (not walks) to the shower in total fear!
Ride with me tomorrow to the gym listening to "real" rock and you will walk in ready to blast weight off your chest into space, guys will get out of your way and let you be. No one will utter a word to you because of the snarl on your face. Ahhhh....thats better....psyched now.....I see 405 going up tomorrow as the kiddies jaws drop open.......I will deal with the flames later! Lift big and lift hard guys.....

Yes, Charger I remember Radar Love -- guess I just didn't remember the name of the band. :)
Best concert -- hmmm, I'm going to see Jimmy Buffet this Wednesday -- maybe he'll be it! However, I guess I really liked Bruce Springsteen, Rod Stewart, Billy Joel (in the 80s), Journey, Styx, Brooks & Dunn (they are so cute!), Aerosmith, Kenny G, Heart -- I can't choose!
Absolute Worst -- Michael Bolton -- YUCK!

Recently, the most fun concert i've been to in a long time was Toby Keith, his Unleased Tour a couple of months ago at Blockbuster Pavilion which is the nation's largest outdoor venue. It was about 60deg with 20-40mph winds that brought the windchill factor down to about 45 or so. Damn good entertainer.
As far as musical/vocal quality goes, Celine Dion at the Arrowhead Pond a few years back. She has such a pure clean voice. No matter how I set up my home theater system, Dolby Digital 5.1/AC3, Bose ceiling mounted cubes and dual sub-woofs, there is just no duplicating hers or any live concert.
Charger, I wish I had seen SRV even just once. That man has the greatest blues talent, ever! I do have a dvd of him, and I guess that's the closest I'll ever get.

You know, I didn't like SRV when I first heard his stuff on the radio (couldn't stand him, "What is this, white boy 'blues' or something?"), but liked him quite a bit when I heard his "non-hit" music. It seemed that what they played on the radio was his worst work, while the best SRV work never got released as singles.
I almost never heard The Who's best work on the radio either, just the sure-fire pop hits.

My first concert...KISS! Back in 77. The best? There are a couple of em...a few years back, my wife and I went to House of Blues in Chicago to see the Fabulous T-Birds. They were ok. The opening act though, was Edgar Winters Group, and for an old man, he ROCKED!!! Second best, probably the second row center seats for James Taylor. My wife had just finished her chemo therapy, and we finally realized she was going to live. THis was our first outing after that. More than the music, that was what made it great.
And then, there are the two times I saw REM...Oh yeah, Neil Young, in his country phase, with David Allen Coe opening for him. Deep PUrple on their reunion tour was great, but I was EXTREMLY high for that one!

Friends and I used to follow the Grateful Dead around the country. That got expensive so I moved to Hayward, CA. Close to the Kaiser, Oakland Coliseum, Shoreline, SFCC, MCCC, The Stone, etc. Probably seen the Dead and the Jerry band 100+ times. Hard to pick a favorite out of those.
Some of my favorites were definitely the entire Fall tour on the East coast in 1984. Austin in 1983 had a super hot Scarlet Fire. Kaiser New Year's shows in 1986. Chula Vista '85. Got to see the first shows after Jer came out of his coma in Hampton '86. Phil sang Box of Rain for the first time in ages. Also a dynamite Estimated Prophet in one of those 3 shows.
Of all the shows seen, don't think I ever got to see a HelpOnTheWay->Slipknot!->Franklin'sTower
Oh, as a bogus side note.... I saw Van Halen warm-up for Black Sabbath in 1976 (Utica War Memorial). That was before the release of their first album (I think).

Charger,
I think Rush/Golden Earring was my first concert, too. Rush was awesome that night. Another awesome show was Missing Persons. I also saw Motely Crue and got my pic on the cover of some rock magazine (can't remember which one though). I was the most clean cut person in the whole crowd!
I just can't see going to a concert these days. I'd probably sit in the back with some binoculars and leave before 10:00 p.m. The family thing really does a number on your social life :).

Oh Man how could I forget Whitesnake!!!
That metamucil remark is so true. Took my wife to go see Bad Company & Styx last summer. I used to look around the parking lot and remember all these muscle cars in 81 that were there. Mustangs, GTO's, road runners, when I looked around last summer... Mini-Vans as far as the eye could see.
A funny thread guys, yeah.
Phikappa....... for my $, Karen Carpenter is among the very best female vocalists of the 20th century. Brother Richard absolutely knew how to arrange a song to bring out her talent.
Frankly I don't listen to a lot of that stuff now, just no time. BUT every Christmas, I pull out 2 Carpenter's albums (yeah, that's right ALBUMS... they sound BETTER than their cd counterparts any day of the week). Merry Christmas Darling, and Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas are among her finest efforts, I feel.
Phatman1179.......RAINBOW. Ritchie Blacmore, when he wanted to impress, was really an amazing guitarist, among the best of the best in rock I feel. First saw him shortly after the double live album came out. Terribly muddy recording, but great musicianship. Rainbow warmed up for Foghat, and he was incredible to see play, really amazing. What a letdown to watch Foghat play afterwards?! I mean they have some good songs and all but in terms of talent.........
And while I loved Deep Purple, I enjoyed Ritchie's playing much more with Rainbow. I thought he and RJ Dio made a great song writing team.
First concert....... Lynyrd Skynyrd warmed up Jeff Beck at the Cape Cod Collisseum, maybe around summer 1975, I was 15 (I think). I couldn't believe anyone could possibly play a guitar like Beck did, I think my jaw was dropped in amazement for most of his show.
..... Now where the hell did that bottle of Metamucil wander off to in here ?!?!?!

Hey PC1, you're right about Blackmore. He's awesome. Especially Rainbow. We saw them in San Antonio in '81 or '82. After the show we hung around to try to meet him. They kind of fooled us though. One of the security guys said, "Ritchie will be signing autographs over here." When we moved over that way, he came out the opposite end. ** shaking head **
A couple of funny things... after we all had been duped. Ritchie snapped his fingers with both hands. While walking to his limo, he had a babe around his arm. His lady friend looked just like him. Wild kinky hair and a big broken looking nose. We thought: How conceited. He picked a girlfriend that looked just like him.
eye2_man.....
20 years ago I dragged along my good friend Michael to a Rainbow concert, and he immediately became a convert. It's a shame that Ritchie practically never was able to capture some of his live style of solo playing on studio tracks...... a lot of which by comparison are dull and uninspired.
NEway, while I eventually burned out on Blackmore, this guy still keeps up with him. 2 New years eve's ago he wanted me to go with him to NY and see a small show, "Blackmore's Knight" although I declined. He's now married to Candace Knight (sp?) and they do stuff together pretty exclusively or so I understand. More accoustical and mellow. I've heard some of their material from Michael, it's interesting but doesn't affect me like the stuff from 20-30 years ago.... yeah, the fact that I'm an old fart surely has a lot to do with it.
Well, since the NY show was small, ticketholders got the chance to meet Ritchie afterwards. Michael was intensely nervous about meeting his "idol" of course, and the only thing he could think of to say when his chance came is "Ritchie Blackmore, I love you". To which Blackmore smugly replied, "that's allright, keep your distance".
Well, I suppose he deserved that after such a bizarre comment from a total stranger, right? :)
Nonetheless Michael brought along one of his guitars and Ritchie autographed it for him. Michael says he's 5'6" tall but has huge hands.
Also, kind of funny you got the "runaround" from Ritchie's security after a concert. I only say this because another guy I used to know also wanted to shake hands with him, and he got the same "he's coming out over here", then "no he's over there".... lines of B.S. No doubt it's very amusing to the security guards watching half crazed fans scramble around to see their idols emerge.......... from the wrong gate.
Hey sorry to get so off topic,
Now, where were we?
Yes, sniff sniff, the Carpenters and Metamucil ;)

See now this thread has changed .. a bit less sappy I guess although the sappy was ok too !
First concert: Jethro Tull and Robin Trower at Shea Stadium (1976)
Best Concert: many to choose from ... Pink Floyd at the Garden (1981) ... a concert called the round-up in philly (included Marshall Tucker, allman Bros., Molly hatchet and the Outlaws - I was a cowboy then I guess), probably the best ever though was Bruce Springsteen in the early 80's after the RIVER album (still my fav) ..
Last Concert: Tom Petty and Bob Dylan ( 6 years or so ago)

Hey Gator, here's one for ya:
After Jimmy Buffett dies and enters the Pearly Gates, God takes him on a tour.
He shows Jimmy a little two bedroom house with a faded parrot banner hanging from the front porch.
"This is your house, Jimmy. Most people don't get their own houses up here," God says.
Jimmy looks at the house, then turns around and looks at the one sitting on top of the hill. It's a huge two-story mansion with white marble columns and little patios under all the windows. Tie-died flags line both sides of the sidewalk and a huge Grateful Dead banner hangs between the marble columns.
"Thanks for the house, God. But, let me ask you a question. I get this little two bedroom house with a faded banner and Jerry Garcia gets a mansion with brand new Grateful Dead banners and flags flying all over the place. Why is that?"
God looks at him seriously for a moment, then with a smile, God says, "That's not Jerry's house, Jimmy; it's mine!"

I got to meet them once when one of the band members was in the hospital I worked in in Ravenna, probably 1984 or so.

WMMS still kicks butt around here, although I don't recall the song by the Gods off hand. Thread started out as the low-T support thread, got kinda interesting, and then went wishy-washy... yup, its the official low-T thread.
In any event, I will participate, as I do like sappy songs. My favorite sappy song story involves not me but a friend in college who shall go nameless (Joyce). She was listening to the radio in Minnesota one day at college and heard this song, "The Leader of the Band" by Dan Fogelberg, and it made her sad, not because it was about his father, but because of misheard lyrics. She thought he sang, ...
"The leader of the band has died, and his eyes are growing cold", when in reality it was,
"The leader of the band is tired, and his eyes are growing old".
I thought it was pretty dirty, though, when he sang that, "his blood runs through my instrument".

Since it's so close to the Holidays I figured I'd take this thread back to one of the original posts. As stated previously the song is Christmas Shoes. Here's the lyrics:
Christmas Shoes lyrics
It was almost Christmas time, there I stood in another line
Tryin' to buy that last gift or two, not really in the Christmas mood
Standing right in front of me was a little boy waiting anxiously
Pacing 'round like little boys do
And in his hands he held a pair of shoes
His clothes were worn and old, he was dirty from head to toe
And when it came his time to pay
I couldn't believe what I heard him say
Chorus:
Sir, I want to buy these shoes for my Mama, please
It's Christmas Eve and these shoes are just her size
Could you hurry, sir, Daddy says there's not much time
You see she's been sick for quite a while
And I know these shoes would make her smile
And I want her to look beautiful if Mama meets Jesus tonight
He counted pennies for what seemed like years
Then the cashier said, "Son, there's not enough here"
He searched his pockets frantically
Then he turned and he looked at me
He said Mama made Christmas good at our house
Though most years she just did without
Tell me Sir, what am I going to do,
Somehow I've got to buy her these Christmas shoes
So I laid the money down, I just had to help him out
I'll never forget the look on his face when he said
Mama's gonna look so great
Sir, I want to buy these shoes for my Mama, please
It's Christmas Eve and these shoes are just her size
Could you hurry, sir, Daddy says there's not much time
You see she's been sick for quite a while
And I know these shoes would make her smile
And I want her to look beautiful if Mama meets Jesus tonight
Bridge:
I knew I'd caught a glimpse of heaven's love
As he thanked me and ran out
I knew that God had sent that little boy
To remind me just what Christmas is all about

Karen Carpenter was hot. Don't want to see what Richard Carpenter looks like today; I feel old enough already.
There was a song; can't remember if it was Carpenters or Captain & Tenille "Come in from the Rain" or something like that; syrupy & melodramatic; only heard it a few times, but seems to have stuck in my head. Not enough to Google though.

You never heard the song Radar Love? Or 2112 by Rush, so sad
Ok , everyone name the best concert they went to, for me it was Page and Plant, a close second was Stevie Ray Vaughn.
Worst, Cheap Trick They were bad, plus i had a knock out date (Australian exchange student) and blew it.
SRV was truly great I had tickets for a show at the cap center two weeks before the show he was killed .I still have the stubs :-(

Always liked The Carpenters and have a soft spot for 60's and early 70's music in general. She was a genuinely talented singer and their songs--call them sappy if you will--were always special. She sang with genuine emotion, as if her heart was breaking with each word. That's special. She went all too soon.
Elvis Presley once said something to the effect that he didn't care if a singer had a good or bad voice; it was important that the singer "meant" every word that came out of his/her mouth. (Screw you, Robert Goulet!). Karen Carpenter meant every word--and then some.
P.S. Did not click on the first page before but did now; realized thread was from a long time ago...

No kidding! There should be an age limit on bumping old threads. :(

I listen to country and there's a song that's been on the last couple of Christmas seasons. I don't know the title or the artist, but it is about a little girl who want to buy a pair of shoes for her dying mother for Christmas. In fact, I'm getting a little teary right now as I type this.
.
Newsong 'Christmas Shoes'... I think if this song does not make you weepy... you have no heart.

This song always made me weepy as a kiddo... because, I realized I was poor... and that no matter how poor I was (spiritually) God died for me... and it did not matter what I did for Him... nothing would ever be 'good enough' to repay Him... but, he took my feeble attempts at being 'good' and still loved me...
I look forward to the day when Jesus can smile at me like the end of the song says.

I've been singing "Unforgettable" to my wife for years.
I sang it to Jake for the first time last week and started crying. I haven't been brave enough to try again since.
