i am looking at getting certified and noticed all the different associations the are for certification. Are any better than the others or is there something i should look for before selecting one. I am looking to do this online and would work part time, possibly in a fitness club. Thanks

The American College of Sports Medicine was on the first and is one of the best out there. I spent a lot of time looking at the different associations and it's the one I'm working on right now.

Hey guys! Just an FYI...we own three health clubs and I can tell you that as far as Personal Training Certifications go, as long as you have the piece of paper...that's all that matters!!

Health Club owners need Trainers to be certified in order to protect themselves in case of an injury / insurance claim. Currently there are no government guidelines about Personal Trainers and/or certifications. But, if an injury does occur the club is much more likely to be protected if the Trainer is certified. In addition, in order to get most certifications the trainer has to be CPR certified which is very important.

Over the years, I have found that the best trainers are those with the knowledge and experience learned OUTSIDE of the certification.

Your best bet is to simply get certified by whatever organiziation you can. A majority of clubs don't care who you are certified as long as you have your certification! Make sure you learn all you can about different training principles for different goals/body types. Most importantly learn how to keep your client safe and injury free!

By the way...a good trainer that gets results in their clients, knows how to market themselves and has great people/sales skills can make an awesome living!! We've got a couple of trainers earning in the six figures. Wow!!!

Hope this helped!!

AFPA is good, national academy of health and fitness is another

your just going to have to pick for yourself, there is no right or wrong way to do this, we can sit here all day and weight the pro's and con's of whose the best.. look into a few, not just one, then pick whats best for you.

shes right. but it helps to get a base knowlege from a repuatable certification, you do learn alot and if you really focus you can apply that to actual training and then build upon the foundations.
any of the big ones, ACSM, NSCA, ISSA, and so on and so forth all the same thing basically, same amount of money, generally the CSCS is the most reputable certification.

but other than knowlege, the other 80% of it is sales. thats the part they dont teach you so well.
