View Full Version : Dapper's Why Do I have Bolts In My Neck Journal
dapper
10-10-2006, 01:25 PM
I figured it was time to start another one. My last journal was supposed to be just a 12 week deal, but it lasted quite a bit longer. I got pretty depressed, but I haven't stopped going to the gym. I had gained a total of 23lbs since getting out ot the hospital in March 2005, I couldn't stand it and nothing seemed to work. No matter what my diet was like. Doctors, nutritionist, no one could understand why I was not losing any fat. My measurements were not changing either.
Well about the time my last journal stopped I changed my diabetes med to Byetta (aka Lizzard Spit). This stuff makes you feel full and I do mean full. Took about 2 weeks to get used to it and all the sides that go along with it. It still makes me fill ful but I am trying to eat 1700 calories a day. I finally got back down to 196lbs. That has been 12 to 16lbs in the last 2 to 2.5 months. So I don't think I can add any muscle which is fine with me. Right now the only thing I am concerned with is losing this fat. I am hoping another 20-25lbs will do it. This gives me almost 6 months to do this. That is basically 1lb per week for the next 24 weeks. Then I should be able to go outside without a shirt on. Yes it is a big deal to this fat ass!
So I will post my new workout plan in a few.
I do want to tell everyone thanks for helping me in my last journal. I appreciate all your encouragement!
Ok on to the games!

I have been working on this over the weekend and still tweaking it. I am actually doing it this week as more of a trial run. So if anyone sees anything that they think I should change please let me know. By the way I haven't been able to do any squats for a while now, just too painful on the back. I am gonna try some romanian deadlifts though.
Everything is 5x5
Monday: Quad Dominant
Leg Press
Stationary Lunges
Quad Leg Press
Bulgarian Squats
Standing Calf Raise
Tuesday: Chest/Triceps
Dips
Incline Bench db's
Decline Bench bb
Pullovers db
Close Grip Bench Press
Wednesday: Back/Biceps
Pullups
Reverse Grip Bent Over Rows
Reverse Grip Lat Pulldowns
Low Rows V-Bar
Animal Curls
Thursday: Hamstring Dominant
Romanian Deadlift
Hamstring Leg Press
Glute/Ham Raise
Sumo Leg Press
Seat Calf Press
Friday: Shoulders
Military Press
Arnold Press
Bent Over Cable Crossovers
Lateral Raise
Lying Upright Rows (cable)
So trash this if you want. I have more problems with shoulders. Pretty painful from injuries earlier in life.

Leg Press 5x5x540
Lunges 5x5x40 (2x20lb dbs) getting balance again and I am weat!!! LOL
Quad Leg Press 5x5x360
Bulgarian Squats 5x5x30 (2x15lb dbs) again balance and I am weak!!!
Stand Calf Raise 5x5x700
My legs are toast today. Having a hard time getting into my service van and going up and down stairs. It feels GREAT!!!!
I am trying to get 1700 calories a day, around 100 carbs, 150-160 protein, and 70-75 grams of fat. I have found over the past 2 months that 1700 seems to be the magic number, however I was only eating 50-60 carbs a day. So I am bumping it up to 100. I have felt so weak and even tired all day after sleeping 8 hours.

Decline Bench 3x5x95 2x5x105
Pullovers 5x5x105
Close Grip Bench Press 5x5x95
I think I could have done a lot better tonight. I was just trying to get a feel. Some of these I haven't done for a while, I have lost strength even though I have kept lifting. I need to figure out how to manipulate the dip machine, it moves in 15lb increments only. I would like to go to 55lb next week. I will move up in weight in all these lifts next week.

I got home late from work so everything has been pushed way back but we got it done tonight.
Pullups (assisted) 4x5x105 1x4x105
Reverse Grip Bent Over Rows 5x5x105
Reverse Grip Lat Pulldown 5x5x110
Low Rows 5x5x105
Animal Curls 2x5x105 3x4x105
105 must have been the magic number tonight. For being a weak ass I think I did alright. Felt a twing in my left ribcage, near the back about mid way down, could really feel it on the low rows when going back to the starting position, I guess when you are stretching the lats. Not real bad but I did feel something.
Now for the bad new of the week. My daughter goes to Tennessee Tech and her truck was broken into Sunday night. Monday morning. They took her stereo and all her cd's. So really not too bad I guess. Not to worry. I always carried a spare Cd player and cd changer so if either of mine went bad I could swap them out. Now both kids are fighting over all my amps and other stereo equipment laying around.
Here is a pic of her: And all you guys she is only 19 will be 20 this December, so keep your meat hooks off her. Yep she is still Daddy's little girl, and I do carry a gun, a shovel, and I have a small backyard but I live at the foothills of the Smokey's and I know many many places to hide a body! :)
First of all this is what my daughter said about me on her My Space...
Heroes: My hero is my father! He is not only a father to me, but the bestest friend that I could ever have. I guess since I have never really had a mother (I don't know my biological mother) my father is the only person that I can really count on. I wouldn't be here, at college, without him. He has helped me to do the very best the I can do, he supports me in anything that I want to do, and he is always there when I need him the most. I love you Daddy!!!!
This is the only pic I have for now. At least neither one of her tattoos show. EEK She takes after her Dad! LOL She lives to dance, she has danced since she could walk almost.

Thanks db
Hibby thanks also, and I still can't make up my mind, between Charleston and The Smokeys, which I like better. I love the cobblestone streets and the horse and buggy rides and the market in Charleston, the 4th of July is great down by the river. The Smokeys are just awesome, it's like God paints a new picture every day. :) I would have to say unless the Gamescocks play like they did against Kentucky they should walk away with that game. I am in Vol country, less than 20 miles from Neyland Stadium. However I am a Buckeye!!!!

First of all I tried doing Romainian Deadlifts but I can't feel anything in my hamstrings when I do these. This may have something to do with I can put my feet together, and keeping my knees straight put my hands flat on the floor and actually a little further but I don't feel anything in my hammies when I do this either. I have always been able to do this. Since I can't feel anything when doing them I changed things up.
Hamstring Leg Press 5x5x450
Glute Ham Raise 5x5xbw getting much better at these.
Sumo Leg Press 5x5x270
Seat Leg Curl 5x5x130
Seated Calf Raise 5x5x320
Not a bad workout, but this RDL thing bothers me. Makes it hard for me to find hamstring stuff to do. I even stood on a platform went down as far as I could and still did not feel anything in the hammies, got pissed and threw the bb into the rack. So if anyone has any ideas to help out my hamstring workout I would appreciate it.

Shoulders are a sore subject with me and I mean Sore!!!! I have a hard time finding anythign I can do with free weights that doesn't cause pain. So I tried this workout tonight with hammer strength machines, plate loading and I felt little to no pain. It was nice for a change.
Shoulder Press 5x5x60 Don't know what it is with this machine but I can't seem to get that much weight on it.
Incline Shoulder Press 5x5x110
Lateral Raise 5x5x75
Reverse Pec Deck 5x5x55 I have very weak read delts, I can't seem to move much weight at all on any rear delt lift. I might eliminate the lying cable upright rows next week and do to exercises for rear delts and really try to get some strength in these babies.
Lying cabel upright rows 5x5x115
Actually one of my best ever shoulder workouts, mainly because of the no pain aspect of it!

dapper
10-14-2006, 06:27 AM
yeah J, I got this stretching stuff from Jag. Dynamic stretching after I forget what it is called before, or it's the other way around. I try and stretch as soon as I get done with a set, getting ready for the next set. As Jag would say it gets blood into the area that you are working on.
dapper
10-16-2006, 05:16 PM
I used a different leg press machine tonight. Instead of the regular 45 degree angle this one you actually lay flat on your back, so it is like a lying squat, more ROM than the other leg press. This one causes more back pain as well so I had to take it slow. I think I can position my feet so the pain is minimal.
Leg Press 5x5x450
Stationary Lunge 5x5x60 (2x30lb db) moved up in weight
Quad Leg Press 5x5x360
Bulgarian Squat (aka Spawn of Satan) 5x5x40 (2x20lb db) moved up in weight
Standing Calf Raise 4x5x725 1x4x725 moved up in weight
Nutrition was 2054 calories today. I would have to say it was good.
This makes two weeks in a row my legs were already sore before I was even done lifting. I hope they are not as painful as they were last week.

I dont' know what happened but I read something a couple of weeks ago and it got me all motivated. What's an animal curl?
dapper
10-18-2006, 05:19 PM
From abcbodybuilding: I like em, can't cheat either.
Animal ( Lying ) Cable Curls
Here we develop and shape the biceps, particularly the height of the biceps peak, because of the constant resistance at the height of the exercise. The Animal has made this a popular exercise here on abcbodybuilding.com These provide much more isolation than standing cable curls and attack your biceps from a different angle.
Implementation: (A) Go over to a high pulley and attach a straight or curved short bar to the cable extension. (B) Grab the cable with an underhand grip and take a seat on the ground. (C) Straighten your body out and lie all the way back. (D) Now with the cable fully extended, simply curl the bar until your forearms touch your biceps. At the top of the motion, squeeze the life out of your biceps and then slowly descend to the bottom of the movement. That is a repetition barbell curl. At the top of the motion, squeeze the life out of your biceps and then slowly descend to the bottom of the movement. That is a repetition

Then you will just make it past all the heavy construction that I know of. There's a place on the side of the road shortly after you get on 40 but more than anything watch your speed. I have seen a lot of people get pulled over going both ways. I have been as far as Crossville recently and they did have something a couple weeks ago that had traffic backed up for a really long way. I would say they are probably done with it but if not I don't know of any way to get around it. That's about all I know. I thik 75 in TN should be good. Might be a little busy on Friday, I think Alabama plays here so there will probably be extra traffic but only for like 80 miles and 75 runs pretty good most of the time.

I changed some things up trying to see what works on my hamstrings. I feel absolutely nothing when I dod any type of deadlift so I did this tonight.
Hamstring Leg Press 5x5x490 I felt strong tonight I probably should have added more weight
Glute Ham Raise 5x5xbw My first set of these are really getting good. I am about ready to try without assistance. I love these things.
Box Step Ups 4x5x50, 1x4x50 (2x25lb db's)
Walking Lunge 5x5x50 (2x25lb db's) I found something that really hits my hamstings well. These will either kill me or my hammies will have to grow. I am gonna hate to love these as well
Seated Calf Press 5x5x340
Good workout. I felt stronger tonight so maybe my strength is coming back. I don't know if this is because of doing 5x5 but it seems like evrey night when I leave the gym the muscles I have worked that night are already at least a little sore. This is very new to me and I wonder if that is ok.

I will start by saying I hate shoulders. Mine are so weak and I feel like I am making no progress. But anyway here goes. All plate loading machines because they cause less pain that bb's and db's
Military Press 3x5x60, 1x4x60, 1x3x60 moved up in weight
Incline Shoulder Press 5x5x115 moved up in weight
Lateral Raise 5x5x80 moved up in weight
Bent Over Raises 5x5x10 I have tried I don't know how many versions. Using an incline bench, this machine, standing bent over, cables, reverse pec deck, it don't matter, they feel so awkward, probably because I am weak as hell and, I think my form sucks on all versions, I just felt like hitting something I was so frustrated. I don't feel anything but I can't lift any weight doing any version of these. HELP!!!!!

Same thing again tonight. Dizzy as hell. Don't know why, oh well made it through anyway. Doesn't cause a loss of strength, what little I do have, but it's almost like the room is spinning, hey like I am drunk, if i can remember that far back, even walk like it so I tend not to walk when I am dizzy. How the hell did miss your journal??? Back on page 1 you said you were getting enough sleep but still feeling sleepy, have you ever had a sleep study done? Sleep apnea is nothing to play with. A sleep study is a pain in the rear, but painless.
As for shoulders, I feel your pain, literally.
Good luck and good medicine.

GF...Sure did have a sleep study done. I was having 40 episodes an hour and they wanted me to get a machine. I found out my insurance wouldn't pay and I thought the lady said it would be around $200 so I figured I would gt it around Christmas. Well it is ovre $800 to get this thing so I won't be getting it. At least not while I have 2 kids in college and I am the sole provider. So I probably have 4 years before I can do that.

Are you eating enough before exercising, dapper? I get faint feeling when exercising if I don't. If it's not faint and actually room spinning stuff, it sounds like a case of vertigo to me. That is a wild thing to have. I had it for a few months once and it about drove me bonkers. Things really do spin like they show at the beginning of the Jimmy Stewart/Alfred Hitchcock movie. :p I was given antivert for that. It can be caused by stress and inner ear problems. I don't know if anything else causes it.

Hibs, I eat the same thing Monday thru Friday every single meal. A little boring but at least it is easier for me to do. I get a little over 300 calories pre-workout. So I have been eating like this for 3 or 4 weeks now and last night this dizzy stuff started. I probably need to check my blood pressure but the battiers in my home machine are dead. I keep forgetting to get them. You mentioned the beginning of the Alfred Hitchcock movies and yeah that's how it is. LOL
I haven't had my Androgel in about a week now. My daughter has had some unexpected expenses at school like $550 that she needed asap so I can't get the prescription filled till Friday and I am missing one of my heart/fluid pills also. I thought I had everything except the Andro until I went to pill my pill box up on Saturday night so that may have something to do with it as well.

Hasn't been a great week with weird stuff happening but it hasn't seemed to hurt my lifts, at least so fat. Sugar dropped wednesday night about an hour after lifting, I don't have any simple sugars in the house to bring it up so I had a hard time or well it took a while to get it back up again. Last night while lifting it dropped again. I had the cold sweats and shaking from the inside. I went to the front desk to see if maybethey had a package of sugar or something. Some girl comes out of the back with one of those McDonalds little things of syrup. I drank it, YUCK!!! It got it done and I finished my workout.
Hamstring Leg Press 5x5x540 moved up again this week. Will shoot for 590 next week
Glute Ham Raise 5x5xbw. I have to catch myself on the handle going down so I only go down to parallel but I am dong much much better at these. I will get a full unassisted one, one of these day. I love these things. The only problem I have is the stretching from my back thru my glutes to my hammies can be pretty painful sometimes. I think it may be the sciatica but I don't have disks in palces either.

Walking Lunges 5x5x60 (2x30lb dbs) This is the brother of (spawn of satan) Bulgarian Squats. But gosh I walk well better yet crawl out of the gym and my hips, glutes, and hammies are already sore and I'll be danged if my quads aren't a little sore from the stretching. I take long steps and focus on using the heels to push with and I can really feel these in the hammies.
Seat Calf Press 5x5x340 I stayes at the same weight from last week because I wanted to do better reps. Solid and I will go up next week.
Pretty good workout considering everything.

Seat Press (Plate Loading machine) 4x5x60, 1x4x60 got one more rep on each of the lat two sets this week
Incline seated press (plate loading) 5x5x130 moved up in weight PB
Lateral Raise (machine) 3x5x85, 2x4x85 moved up in weight
Read Delt Row 1x5x80, 4x5x90 first time doing these so I guessed at the weight. I think going to 100 at first next week will be good.
Lying cable upright row 5x5x130 moved up in weight
Good shoulder workout for me. This is my weakest body part bar none.

I went to buy a new pair of pants today and for the heck of it grabbed a pair of 34x30's. Yep short legs. :) Anyway the dang things fit. I have not been in a 34 since boot camp which was over 20 years ago and I might have been for a short while back in the early 90's but I can not be for sure about that. I had to replace my avitar with the new pic. I am still a fat slob, I just look a little better in clothes now.

A good night and a bad night at the same time. I got done with my leg presses and started my lunges and the first rep wit hmy right leg back I felt pain shoot the full length of my right quad. I tried it again and damn it was bad. Hell by that time I was limping. So I went and did my Quad leg presses and then onto Bulgarins Squats and started with my right leg on the bench and sure enough the same thing. I don't know what I did but nothing else cause any pain to it except lunges and Bulgarian squats. Ok so here is the good part.
Leg Press 5x5x720 matched my highest when I was doing an 8x3 workout
Quad Leg Press 5x5x460
Leg Extension 1x5x135, 4x5x145
Standing Calf Raises 5x5x725 I stayed at the same weight as last week, I wanted better reps and I got em. On to 750 next week I hope.
So now a little story about Bulgarian Squats. I know that it was not Adam and Eve eating the forbidden fruit to be the first sin. I am positive that Eve must have grabbed one of Adam's legs and he went down on the forward leg. When he came bak up, I am sure he said God's name in vain and then he called her a B*tch. I am sure Bulgarin Squats are the root of all that is bad in this world. LOL OK maybe I am being a little to dramatic, but I know the Satan created them!!!! :)

Thanks man I appreciate it.
I am no where close to where I want to be and it seems each tiny steps is taking a really long time. My metabolism sucks something awful. I eat 2034 calories a day and gain weight, and my measurements don't change.

Good workout tonight. I am not sure I am feeling the bent over rows in the right place. I am thinking I should be sort of thrusting my chest out, pulling my shoulder blades together. I think I am just pulling it up to around the belly button. I do more of a Yates Row, 45 degree angle, I am not bent at 90 degrees. Maybe I should change this up to see how the other feels, it' s just harder on my back the other way.

I am changing up my routine yet again. I actually have loved 5x5. I like getting DOMs, it makes me feel like I actually did something in the gym. But, I have had a goal since I started and something I lose site of that goal. I want to lose this fat. I have gained weight and the inches are not coming off. I gain weight eating 1800 calories a day. I do believe my body is all hosed up. Besides being a type II diabetic, I am on Armour Thyroid and Androgel. I still gain weight and I am still tired throughout the day. I can take a nap most any day. I catch myself yawning throughout my workouts. So at least until the end of the year I am going to do this program and add cardio which I hate and I will be concentration on fat loss. I am not so sure I can gain muscle and lose fat at the same time as my body is so screwed up.
DBFLGIRL has given me Joel Marions "Full Body Fat Loss" Program. I am going to be doing it along with cardio. There are 4 lifts each night, each set is supersetted, two days a week are 3x5, and the other two are 3x12. I think I can get each day done in around 30 min which will leave me 20 min of my version of HIIT cardio. I will lift on Mon, Tue, Thur, Fri with 45 min cardio sessions on Wed and Sat which will consist of swimming laps on those two days. The cardio after lifting will be done on a Recumbent Bike.
I will keep my protein up so I can try and keep what little muscle I have. It has been a long 18 months with little to show for it. In the past month I have gained back 8lbs eating 2034 calories a day and lifting 45 min 5 days a week. I keep my carbs around 100-125 a day and all complex carbs.
So that is my mission statement for the remainder of the year.

A2) Quad Leg Press 3x350x12
B1) Bent Over Row 3x95x12
B2) Glute Ham Raise 3xBWx12
Good workout for my first one with this program. I am actually using this week to try and get my weights figured out for each exercise.
Cardio:
Recumbent Bike: 20 min (my version of HIIT) I say my version because I am not sure this is real HIIT, but for my fat ass it is. LOL
5 min moderate RPM with HR around 110-120, 1-min all out, then 2 min at 70-75 RPM, I did 4 cycle of this, then a 5 min cooldown. I will probably add a 5th cycle next week with only a 2 min cooldown at the end.

Not a good day in the family today. I had to take Woody (my kitten) to get denutted. Poor little guy never even had the chance to get laid. :( Oh he is named after Woody Hayes!
Other than that I called my doctor and told them I wanted a different diabetes medicine. I have decided that if he don't do it I am not gonna take my regular meds until I lose this fat. My med tells the body to make all kinds of insulin, so since the cells reject it I have tons on insulin floating around my body and storing everything as fat. It is not right to gain weight eating 1800 calories a day. So if not then I will do it with diet and exercise and deal with the higher readings and see how they come down as I lose this fat.
Todays Workout 3x5
A1) Incline Bench 1x8x115, 2x5x135 I haven't used bb on these in a long time
A2) Quad Leg Press 1x6x360, 2x5x360 this machine has a bigger ROM than our regular leg press machine. This one you lay flat on your back, so it is like a laying down squat.
B1) Seat Row 3x5x110 I have gotten stronger I should have been at 120/130 but I am trying to get a feel for my weights this week
B2) Hamstring Leg Press 3x5x630
Cardio: Recumbent Bike: 20 min, 4 HIIT sessions tonight, 1 min as hard as I could go and 2 min at 70-75 RPM my HR stayed between 140-165 for those 12 min, I did a 5 min warmup and a 3 min cooldown.

Close Grip Bench 4x5x110, 1x3x110
I could not feel my arms doing the close grip bench presses. I think I worked my body till it just gave out. Felt good though.
Recumbent Bike: 2 min warmup: 10 min HIIT: 20 sec balls to the wall then 40 sec moderate speed. My HR stayed between 150-158 the whole time.

I am going to my doctor tomorrow. I have also been doing some research on Metformin. I am thinking I will be able to reach my goals using it. I used to take it but I had no idea what I needed to do with my diet to control it. So I was taken off it. Then when I was put on the Glipizide is when I started working out and finding out how to eat so naturally my blood sugar numbers came down. Right now I haven't had any meds since Sunday. So only a couple of days. It is running higher than normal of course and it was pretty high after my workout which is weird. So maybe tomorrow he will prescribe what I want.
Woody is doing fine. I will have to take a pic of him and my dog Rica. Rica is a Pembroke Welsh Corgi.
By the way Metformin reduces blood sugar and reduces insulin, Glipizide reduces blood sugar and increases insulin. Therefore with all that insulin in your body that it don't need it tends to store everything as fat.
