I live in Fairfax, and up until I graduated recently I worked out at the weight room in the George Mason Fieldhouse. The Fieldhouse weight room was pretty much the best gym I've ever been in. 10 power racks, 6 flat benches, 2 incline benches, dumbbells that went up to 120, a pretty good cable machine, lots of pull up bars.

Now that I've graduated I'm looking at gyms in the area and most of them suck in comparison. They have plenty of treadmills and cardio equipment and lots of useless selectorized machines, but most of them are lucky to have one power rack. The Gold's Gym in Chantilly only has one true power rack and a couple of half racks tucked away in a corner. The World Gym near downtown Fairfax doesn't even have a full power rack, only one ****ty old half hack.

Are there any good places to work out in Northern Virginia? All I need is some power racks and a good set of dumbbells. I live in an apartment so I really can't get a home gym. If I can't find a good new gym, maybe I can just sneak back into the GMU one over and over.

wok out at Golds in Alexandria. you'll find most gyms are mainly cardio any more. still the golds in Alexandria and Lorton still have some of us muscle heads around.

Charlottesville here. When I finally get out of Iraq I'm going to build from scratch my new and improved home gym! I gave away all of my stuff in storage to my brother about two weeks ago, on his move to Ft. Polk, LA. I gave away tons of stuff: benches, power rack, bars, dumbbells, tons of plates, etc etc etc.

So I'll be doing a lot of Craigslist and yard sale shopping in the coming months!

This might be 6 months too late but Planet Fitness in 7 Corners is a great cheap gym. They recently upgraded a lot of equipment and have just about everything you need and its only $10 a month with no commitment or $20 a month with a years commit to get some additional perks like free guests.

Sports & Health is very nice but I'm just curious whether there are better deals out there. I'm currently on a joint account with 2 roommates as a "family" (one of us is listed as a minor. lol) for $110 per month, but the contract is nearly up and one of them wants out when it's over since he never goes to the gym.

oh lol sorry. The gym is fine. Machines are alright, nothing special. There isnt a whole lot of room for freeweights so that part is usually congested. I like the sauna.

Its not really a community place or anything. I dont say hi to anyone, no one says hi to me. Keep to myself and do my thing then roll out. Im happy there though, so long as I got my weights, my elliptical, and my sauna.
