If you had to pick just ONE weight gainer (protein powder), what would be the best one?
Please pick product and include the brand. Give your reasons. The best answers will be displayed on the main Bodybuilding.com site for millions of people to see!
(Note: This is not a discussion about how or when to take weight gainers, if you should take weight gainers, or why some weight gainers are NOT good. Just list your absolute favorite weight gainer and give your detailed reason.)

Is it possible to include a poll such that noobs like me can tell which one is the most popular/recommended brand?

Agreed, A poll would do great, if possible

You don't need a poll, the website already has that.

As for the topic of this thread.
First thanks to the admin for replying so fast to my request to have this thread :) .
I bought some BSN True Mass and I have to say the taste is bar none of anything else I've tasted so far. Strawberry.
And it goes down SOOOO easy, no heavy bloating after downing 2 scoops with 2 whole eggs in 500ml of water. It also mixes extremely well, I tried simply using a shaker bottle and could not tell the difference from using a blender.
The only thing that is making me look elswhere, the higher price.
I'm in a bulk phasing and I will try CytoGain next as it is less expensive and has MUCH less sugar.

I see, CytoSport's Cyto Gainer is the top seller (their Muscle Milk is popular too but I think that's used for something else?). I guess we can deduce that since most people use CytoGainer, that means more people will recommend it? I would also like to hear from people who have used Muscle Juice (cheapest per calorie) , ON Pro Gainer and Serious Mass, and Super Gainers Fuel (highest serving of calories/protein/carbs/fat),

Dang....just read it. That's some really good stuff!!!!
That being said, Infusion also seems to have really good ingredients:

ON Serious Mass
So far(have not tried Cyto yet), it has the best taste. Mixes well, even in a shaker(i split it 1 serving but 2 shakes). And with the 1250 cal. It makes a good 625cal twice a day meal replacement if needed.

Looks okay but Infusion seems to be in the category of Muscle Milk. I don't think it falls under weight gainer powder (500+ calories) since it only has 384 calories.

I've been bulking HARD for 2 years on and off mostly on and i've found a few gainers that definately help... True Mass from ON Nutrition has a good 2-1 carb to protien ratio and tastes decent, only problem is mixing it all up. As with most gainers they clump and it can feel like your eating your shake rather than drinking it ;) This is opposite of HDT's Solid Gains. Mixes smoothly and tastes good. Not too haevy but it has 900 calories w/ a relatively low fat index, 2-1 carb to protien ratio... I usually add a little flaxseed or olive oil in my morning gainer shake and postworkout gainer. Long story short since November 04 - present the lean mass is +44 lbs. Never had much bodyfat so I was pretty little then, just pay attention to your timing and very little will get put towards fat.

FYI the BSN True Mass does not clump. It actually can be mix by hand. The stuff simply liquifies in no time.
I did two scoops in a glass and only used an egg beater by hand and it took less than 20 seconds. WITH 2 whole eggs added in.
I just ordered some Universal Rail Gains, I'll review it.

the one with the most amount of calories in a serving
That means TwinLab's Super Gainers Fuel wins. It has the following:
Calories 2560
Calories from Fat 240
Total Fat 27g
Saturated Fat 25g
Dietary Fiber 2g
Sugars 35g
Carbohydrates 478g
Protein 102g
As for taste and mixability? I don't know but someone please let us know.
As for price....a 10lb tub only gives you 7 servings for $42?! Is that an error? That's pretty steep!
http://www.bodybuilding.com/store/gainprot.htm
The serving is a whopping 661.7g! Very misleading. If you take Muscle Juice with the same amount of serving as TLSGF, UNMJ will have 2695 calories!
For the curious...a 661.7g serving equals (in calories):
Real Gains = 2604
Cyto Gainer = 2735
Serious Mass = 2476
True Mass = 2856
Isopure Mass = 2481
Mega Gainer = 2452
Pro Blend Solid Gains = 2551
Pro Complex Gainer = 2580
N-Large 2 = 2612
Quick Mass = 2652
So the real winner is BSN's True Mass. Over 100 calories more than 2nd place CytoSport's Cyto Gainer.

Yes, but true mass is also 140 more calories in just sugar/fat.
JackG has a good point. I bought the product because I did not want to wait for the dilevery. But my first choice was CytoGainer or Universal Gains.
The main reason being they have less sugar (only 5 grams or less) as well as decent fiber content.
Second is the much higher price of BSN.
IMHO, I would go with CytoGainer or Universal Gains before any other weight gainer sold at bb.com and yes I did look at EVERYONE of them, hehe.

From the above stats, you only need 145g for True-Mass to achieve 626 calories but it contains more than twice sugar than the other two. That probably makes it tastier. That 3.5 scoop serving is weird. Why can't RealGains just deal with 3 or 4 scoops? BTW, what is the difference between pre-digested, ion-exchanged whey protein hydrosylate and whey protein isolate which CytoGainer doesn't have.

I would say the extra sugar does not improve the taste because one of the reasons I love it is it barely has NO sweet taste, I would even say it has NONE at all.
I hate sweet taste in powders because you get sick of it after 1-2 days (I do).
Anyways, I look forward to giving feedback on Universal Gains.
If you have the money and don't mind the extra sugar then BSN True Mass is bang on, strawberry flavour is delicious.

How come cytogainer says it has 620 calories but the macronutrients only add up to 589? Real gains and true mass seem to match up in that respect. Is it just a typo or what?

i have a problem with my workout
i lose weightttt everytime i go gym
i tried couple of GNC weight gainers but it didnt really workout
one thing im really trying hard to get, its to gain weightttt (i mean alot) to get bigger so so

Prolab N-Large II
if u have experience with either of this plzzz let me knoww, what was outcome for u

i take a mixture what i usually do is 1 1/2 scoops True mass, 2 scoops body fortress whey
my reasons for this is true mass is just too sweet for me, i mean its great but just too much sugar so i get a mixture of the sweet taste +extras and the cheap protien in body fort. It works for me and tastes just fine not as sweet as true mass, and not bad tasting like body fort.

The best one I have used is CytoGainer. I've heard some good stuff about True Mass, and decent stuff about GNC Mass XXX (I think that's the name), but I've never tried it. I tried the Gnc brand years ago and thought it tasted rather bad. I love CytoGainer tho.
esquire415
10-08-2006, 10:15 PM
CytoGainer, Real Gains, and True-Mass are the top 3 out there. I've looked at others and they really don't have the amount of calories that the above 3 have for only 145g-155g of serving. That's all you have to look for, the number of calories in relation to the grams per serving (and also the sugar content where less is better).
So from the above 3, it all boils down to the taste & price. I have not tasted any of them so i cannot attest on which one is the tastiest but I calculated the price based on the cheapest I can find on the internet.
$1.14 / serving (21 servings) Real Gains
$1.47 / serving (18 servings) CytoGainer
$1.80 / serving (18 servings) True-Mass
So the winner in terms of value for your money is Real Gains.

Im not SOOO worried about taste but im currently using GNC brand and its SO bad and thick. Has anyone tried Xyience X-Gainer?

I took Ultimate Nutrition 2544 all last summer along with no explode and saw some of my best gains ever. I just purchased a 10LB tub of ultimate nutrition and I might switch to Universal after it's done because of all the hype. Optimum Nutrition Pro Complex Gainer Double Chocolate. Try it you'll see why!
ksa-muscle

its Serving Size is 3.5 Scoops (155g)
Amount Per Serving:
Calories 610
Calories from Fat 53
Total Fat 6g 9%
Saturated Fat 3g 14%
Cholesterol 97mg 32%
Total Carbohydrates 87g 29%
Dietary Fiber 5g 19%
Sugars 5g
Protein 52g 104%
Calcium 316mg 32%
Iron 2mg 11%
Sodium 168mg 7%
Potassium 503mg 14%
so to each scoop is 618 / 3.5 = 176 cals
if you exchange one scoop of it with one scoop of on whey
the calculation would be like this
2.5 scoops of real gains = 441 + 1scoop of on whey = 112 cals = 561cals
the point of doing this is to rise the protein intake and to lower the carbs
intake @ the same time
so the result would be like
cals 561
Calories from Fat: 48
total fat 5.25
Total Carbohydrates 65g
sugars 5g
protein 61g
so the ratio of real gains alone is fat=9% carb=57% protein=34%
but with the improved wait gainer
the ratio would be like
vvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvv
fat=8.5% carb=46.5% protein=43.6%
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
see how the ratio got much better and less dense in calories dropping from
610cals to 561cals which makes it a decent gainer
if you want to add more calories you can add 10ml of flax oil to raise that low
percentage of fats and to put something good in it
i know i went on explaining but to do it the right way bring an empty tub
and fill it with 25 scoops of real gains & 10 scoops of on whey to make
10 servings of your improved ratio new wait gainer
at least easier than going to the kitchen when you dont want to because of
being lazy @ that time lol..................
In my opinion the best weight gainer is N-Large. I beleive this is the best because of the following reasons. It has 52 grams in each serving (4 scoops). Each serving has 600 cal's and if you mix with milk, it'll be around 750cals. The reason why I like this weight gainer the best is because it seemed to be the most effective one out there. I've tryed almost every kind out there too but with N-Large I never felt sick after taking it.

What I used on a regular basis when I was trying to gain weight was MHP's Up Your Mass. The taste was great (Fudge Brownie) and I only took it with water. It was a little difficult to mix though as it got a little clumpy if you added the powder or water first, so i had to add half the water, then the powder, and then the rest of the water and then shake it up.

A clean bulk that i've had alot of success with has consisted of Pasteurized liquid egg whires, Whey isolate and Hydrolized cassein protein, 5 g pure creatine monohydrate, 7g leucine, honey, unsweetened coconut water without the pulp (can of Goya), cinnammon, oats, water.
I make this all from scratch but the trouble is well worth it since sucrose from most premixed name brand weight gainers make me bloat.

I've been on Cyto Gainer ever since I started lifting, and while it put on 30 lbs in a year, I have plateaued at 195 and can't seem to put on any more pounds, and it has been 6 months! Any suggestions?
have you tried switching your workout plan? I have plateaued before, but put your body into shock and switch your workout plan. There are some intense workout plans that might help you on this website.

Hey Groper305, can you tell me why you drink unsweetened coconut water. I'm just curious. I haven't seen the label of a Goya can, but maybe you can share.

I'm a little skeptical when it comes to weight gainers. I figure that all you need is a regular protein supplement along with an increase in diet and a change in workout program. However, I bought Cytosport's Cyto gainer and wow! I went from 145lbs to 175 in three months! I was suprised with my results. I figured that it was because I had slimmed down for swim season and it was easy to gain the pounds back, but a 30lb increase was far more than expected. Try Cyto Gainer.
The best weight gainer I have ever used is Russian Bear 5000. It's what I got the best gains with and is relatively cheap compared to others. Here's its stats:
Calories: 2600, Protein: 184gm, Carbohydrate: 391gm, Medium Chain Triglycerides: 46gm, Fat: 0gm, Beta Carotene: 2300IU, Vitamin D: 460IU, Vitamin C: 138mg, Natural Vitamin E: 69IU, Vitamin B1: 4mg, Vitamin B2: 5mg, Vitamin B6: 5mg, Vitamin B12: 14mcg, Niacin: 46mg, Pantothenic Acid: 23mg, Folic Acid: 920mg, Biotin: 690mg, Paba: 23mg, Choline: 460mg, Inositol: 460mg, Calcium: 1150mg, Magnesium: 460mg, Phosphorus: 805mg, Iodine: 35mg, Potassium: 1265mg, Zinc: 17mg, Copper: 5mg, Chromium: 200mcg

You've got to be kidding me. You didn't mention that you have to take one gallon of milk with 4-5 scoops in order to achieve those numbers. And we don't know how many grams are there in those 4 or 5 scoops. Some people got diarrhea for taking that much dosage as you can see here:

My favorite weight gainer would have to be SIZE UP by MetRx. It is fairly new and i am on my third tub. I have recently competed for my first time this past july at 195 lbs. I started taking this weight gainer soon after. I have gained about twenty pounds of strictly lean muscle due to cardio and taking fat burners with a clean diet. My strenght is through the roof... About six months ago i was weighing 240 lbs. I am about 215 right now and i am stronger than i was at 240. Therefore this is by far my favorite weight gainer. SIZE UP

Another vote for Real Gains. It's a great product. I have packed quite a few pounds of lean, quality muscle from just two 6lb tubs. I totally recommend it for people who have a hard time gaining weight.

Tried muscle milk: didn't work
tried cyto gainer: didn't work
tried muscle juice: didn't work
mixed all 3 up in a big tub- BEST WEIGHT GAINER ON EARTH!
The muscle milk took too long to digest but is diluted with the other two so it acts as a short medium and long term provider of protein and carbs, muscle juice didnt dissolve all that well, but it had good vitamins and good source of cals from a varity of different sources(egg, milk, soy, maltodextrin, fructose, medium chain triglycerides), And cyto gainer has the whey hydrolysate and more and varied sugar sources(5 different forms of sugar, sweet!), plus of the 3 it mixes the best.
overall, all 3 products could use more whey hydrolysate and simple dextrose, leaving the mix a bit lacking, but non-the-less, it still works great for me!

Does anyone know a weight gainer that isn't so expensive?
I've been using Muscle Juice 2544 and I have to agree it is a b*tch to drink because it doesn't break up without the use of a blender. Adding a banana and some natty pb to the mix makes the taste better though. Can't wait to finish this up and get a different product.

MHP Up Your Mass Cookies and Cream or Cinnabun is by far the best tasting and filling weight gainer i've used.
I've been using Cyto since I started my gain period (two weeks ago) and so far I've gained two pounds, a decent number. I tried the GNC Mass XXX but after a week of it I couldn't stomach it anymore; too sweet and too thick to take twice a day.
Cyto Gainer mixes a whole lot better and is definately one of the better tasting. I'd recommend it for any serious gainers, though my opinion would weigh a whole lot more if I did, haha.

Cytogainer and Muscle Milk have been the only two protein powders i've used consistently because of the low or no lactose content. Muscle milk taste great and is good for leaning out. Cytogainer was the first one i tried, and it helped me go from 145 lbs. to 160 lbs. in about 3 months. I was not taking it as directed. I would only take 3 scoops after workout, and 3 scoops the morning following my workout. I did'nt want 52 grams of protein at once, i've read that a lot of protien at one sitting can wreak havoc on your liver.
Heres a shake that i like to make after my workout: 4 scoops cytogainer, 1/2 cup oatmeal, 8 oz. lactaid lactose free milk, 1 tbsp. honey, 4 frozen strawberries, 1 bananna, 1/2 cup of ice, blend till smooth.
I like it too because its cheap.

MRI-Up Your MASS
MHP Up Your Mass Cookies and Cream or Cinnabun is by far the best tasting and filling weight gainer i've used.
And its low glycemic carbs ;)
anyways......
The advanced MacrobolicT Nutrition profile in Up Your Mass provides the precise 45/35/20 ratio of macro nutrients (carbohydrates, protein, fat) your body needs to create tremendous gains in muscle size and strength. without added fat ! Whether you're a pro athlete who needs to pack on mass for an upcoming event, or a teenage hardgainer who has difficulty gaining weight, Up Your Mass can help you blast through previously unconquerable with traditional weight gainers. MHP's "Every Calorie Counts" credo is being proven by the many pro athletes who use Up Your Mass daily, including WWE Superstar/Olympic Gold Medalist, Kurt Angle, and America's Three Strongest Men - Steve Kirit, Phil Pfister, and Mark Philippi.
Glycemix LGIT - Carbohydrates are the primary source of energy and are of vital importance to exercise performance. However, high glycemic carbs like sugars (Dextrose, Sucrose) can have a negative impact on performance and body composition. Glycemix LGI is a unique agglomerate of low glycemic carbohydrates (barley, oats and oat fiber), that provides sustained energy, improved glycogen replenishment and stable blood sugar levels.
ProbolicT - This dynamic sustained release protein matrix (Supro soy protein isolate, whey concentrate, casein) provides a quick, medium and slow release of amino acids for both fast and long term nitrogen retention. The Probolic protein matrix supplies large amounts of Arginine, Branch Chain Amino Acids (BCAA's) and OVER 5 GRAMS of GLUTAMINE per serving critical for muscle building and recovery.
Lipid Complex - Essential Fatty Acids are extremely important nutrients for health and performance. In fact, the right sources of fats may help improve hormone functions and provide energy. EFA's slow down the digestion of carbohydrates and proteins, helping to stabilize insulin release and improve nitrogen retention. Medium Chain Triglycerides (MCT's) provide a good source of energy and help preserve muscle glycogen. The Up Your MASS multi-functional Lipid Complex also contains CLA, which has been shown to increase lean mass.

I don't like any of them. My smoothy bar at gold's had a drink which has 3000 cals 80g protein and only 7g fat. It only cost $6.50 per and tastes great. Can't see the point in giving some company $7-$8 per serving for half the cals and protein and a fourth of the taste. Now if anyone knows of a weight gainer with these type stats let me know. Otherwise I'm going to start making my own.

I'm guessing you meant 300 cals. Which is hardly worthy of being considered a weight gainer. Two scoops of your avg whey powder is gonna give you 230 cals and will only cost you 50 cents!
At 3000 cals... given your other macros, that would be 654g of carbs and lets be honest here, thats just not possible in ONE shake. If it is, there is so much sugar in that thing it cant possibly be considered healthy.

so what do we look for in a gainer? carbohydrates right? they are the main source of energy. sorry i don't know what calories mean, are they energy or bad?
i know that most gainers suck because they use sugar as their main source of energy, that's something REALLY bad and will only make you fat.
i found this gainer by reflex nutrition, what do you think?
http://www.reflex-nutrition.com/sports_nutrition/muscle__size/document_5_2.php
While other companies still use maltodextrin as the main source of carbohydrate for their weight gain formulas, Reflex Nutrition have taken the initiative and brought you a unique alternative.
Organic Source of Carbohydrate
Instant Mass is the first high quailty weight gainer to contain an exclusive blend of organic barley and oats. This organic source of carbohydrate provides a low glycemic source of energy along with naturally occurring vitamins, minerals and dietary fibre.
52 Grams of Whey Protein and Micellar Casein.
Organic
Organic agriculture is a safe, sustainable farming system, producing healthy crops and livestock without damage to the environment.
It avoids the use of artificial chemical fertilisers and pesticides on the land, relying instead on developing a healthy, fertile soil and growing a mixture of crops. In this way, the farm remains biologically balanced, with a wide variety of beneficial insects and other wildlife to act as natural predators for crop pests and a soil full of micro-organisms and earthworms to maintain its vitality.
Organic is a term defined by law and all organic food production and processing is governed by a strict set of rules.

As an ecto, I've been using weight gainers every day for the last 3 years along with a solid diet.
Cytogainer is my personal favorite; low fat and most importantly LOW SUGAR. Only drawback is its expensive.
Prolab N Large 2 is reasonably priced and easy to find. A litte high on sugar but still acceptable.
Still, I'd much rather just mix oats, whey, milk and olive oil. High in fiber (oats), healthy fats, very, very low in sugar and extremely cheap.

All the URL's I list lead to my review of the product.
My favorite:
Cytosport, Cytogainer (http://forum.bodybuilding.com/showthread.php?t=860047)
This is my favorite for the reasons of a solid profile (typical of a weight gainer), good flavoring, and a good price. Additionally, it does not have the tendency to make me feel full, which I have experienced some with other gainers.
I also recommend...
Universal Nutrition, Real Gains (http://forum.bodybuilding.com/showthread.php?t=858829)
Real Gains has maybe a slight advantage profile-wise over Cytogainer, however their flavoring doesn't really keep up with Cytosport's! I would rank this number 2 overall
Optimum Nutrition, Pro Complex Gainer (http://forum.bodybuilding.com/showthread.php?t=858757)
Very smooth texture, this stuff is decent. The biggest drawback to this product is the price. I cannot recommend it, as I just don't find it cost-efficient. Find a good price for it, and it's pretty good!
MRM, Massive Muscle Gainer (http://forum.bodybuilding.com/showthread.php?t=906476)
This one is pretty good, and comes quite cheap for the amount you get. The drawback? It really fills me up the most out of all the gainers I've tried so far. This can be a problem, as it can give the tendency to want to cut out food after drinking it.

I like the organic part myself plus it has a good amount of proteins although at the expense of low amounts of carbs (therefore lower calorie content compared to CytoGainer). I hate artificial sweeteners so I would think this is a little bitter or the sweetness will taste weird or leave a nasty aftertaste. Although this can be disguised by quality flavoring, ON's Pro Complex with Splenda tasted sickeningly sweet. Reflex has artificial sweeteners (sucralose, acelsulfame k) and 'flavourings' of which we don't know if that is aritificial or natural. Natural sweeteners include erythritol, xylitol, pure maple syrup, molasses, stevia, agave nectar, Rapadura (dehydrated cane sugar juice), Sucraisin (white grape juice), rice syrup, barley malt, date sugar, and raw unfiltered honey.
I have tried stevia (the higher the stevioside and rebaudioside content, the sweeter it is). However, it has a bitter and liquorice-like after-taste, especially at high concentration. I bought 10 packets from Vitacost to try it but i'm not sure if I can ever get used to the taste. I read that the more rebaudioside in stevia, the less bitter aftertaste. I probably got a bad brand.

FOOD!!! and lots of it! MEAT AND RICE, every 2.5 hours. If your trying to add mass, eat 7-8 meals a day, 2 of them protein shakes, A good one I used that taste great and VERY Nutritious, is
50.gr of Whey Protien (Gold Standard, it has all the esentiall stuff BCAA,)
1 serv. of peanut Butter
1 Banana...( or strawberrys)
2 ice cubes
1 serv. Omega 3 Fatty Acids
try it out, the main thing is WHOLE food will help you gain mass, not weight gainers. EAt and EAT alot!, Lift HEavy!

True but not everyone can eat 6-8 meals a day. The convenience of an MRP or protein shake in between meals and before bedtime is tops, especially if you work the rat race. You also don't feel full when it's time for the real meal and therefore will be able to eat more.

I've heard good things about
Muscle juice (it is good stuff)
True mass by bsn
and cyto gainer, but cyto gainer wasn't that good imo. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't as rich as I like em like muscle juice, that stuff is rich and packs on a few extra lbs, which I didn't get from cyto gainer. If anything, cyto gainer may have caused me to loose a few lbs :( from what I remember

Cytogainer is amazing has a great taste and i bought the vanilla shake flavor. I take it with 2 cups of skim milk and only put 2 scoops so i dont waste it all so fast but i love it....
I would have to say Real Gains..
Chocolate Real Gains + oats = amazing..
Excellent results for me, 7+ lbs in 4-5 weeks, amazing for me.. I have been stuck at 144 for over a year, now in 4-5 weeks I hit 152..

CytoGainer Rockyroad is probably the best for multiple reasons. 1) The taste can't be beat. 2) The sugar content is nice and low. Add to that the fiber content and you have something that most other weight gainers don't have. 3) the protein to carb ratio isn't out of control. 4) The protein is whey, which is an excellent breakfast and post workout protein to get in your system fast.

what does everyone think of the GNC brand Mass XXX ? Anyone try it ?
Yeah I tried it for a few weeks; it was too sweet and too thick to take twice a day. That's when I switched to Cyto Gainer.
It isn't all that bad if you're desperate for some protein but for an extended bulking period I say go with Cyto. Better taste, it's smoother.

Ok...so I got my tub of CytoGainer Strawberries n Cream today. I like strawberry so I got that flavor. Unfortunately it leaves me a weird aftertaste like a flowery kind of flavor. Anyone else experience that? Do you guys drink it with milk or with just water? I wish I got a sample first. I got sample of Real Gains and those tasted better (all flavors with no weird aftertaste) although quality-wise it is only 2nd to CytoGainer. I also wish both mix as good as ON's 100% Whey.
Someone mentioned that you can mix your creatine with your weight gainer...is this true? Or do you guys prefer taking them separately?

I'm on cytogainer now. Had it for a couple weeks. Almost done with it. Gained 4 pounds so far. I recommend it over real gains because you get 3g of creatine mono and 2 g of glutamine in it too. But I must say, if you have a small stomach, you'll get bloated. The flavor really kicks in cytogainer.

About to buy an order of CytoGainer... Have been off the gainers for awhile but am ready to get back into the game. I just tried Muscle Milk (made by CytoSport) and it truly does taste amazing (choc. shake flavor). Nutrition stats are also pretty good, low sugar, controlled carbs...
Unfortunately the facts are true about GNC products... They just can't get it right when it comes to their protein supps. The taste and texture needs to be improved. Explains why the price is so low.
Hey guys, i'm a total n00b on these boards! I only just started working out again after 5 years, so my body is incredibly weak and flat. My buddy who is a pro trainer has decided to start training me and we both got onto BSN Truemass and NO-Xplode 2 weeks ago. I started at a measley 138lbs , after 2 weeks i've already gone up to 145lbs. I'm seeing quite a difference in my body shape too. I'm doing three scoops in the mornings and 3 at night and one after training. So so far so good. I'm taking the Vanilla flavoured Truemass and it tastes awesome! It also blends in with water after only a few hard shakes with no clumping at all. I'll let you guys know how i'm doing after a month!

I love Prolab's N-Large II. It's by far the best protein anything, i've ever tasted, yes better than muscle milk. It carries about 600calories, 52g of protein, (more with milk) and only about 25g or sugar. Plus it has a very short ingredient list, with maltodextrin, so there is no artificial sweetners, which makes it easier on digestion. It works best for me, even with digestive problems i put on about 15 pounds in like 2.5 months.
I'm now experimenting mixing half a serving of N-Large with a full serving of Muscle Milk. I like what I'm seeing.

405g of carbs?! even thats redic... thats LITERALLY a gallon of orange juice. how can you possibly consume that after a workout without it spilling over into the next meal.
Yeah... how can you possibly consume that after a workout without it spilling OUT ONTO THE FLOOR, would be my question :D
Well... as for me I like Cytogainer for the price... True-Mass is about on par with that but it's more expensive. Why? I dunno. The packaging is pretty?
I want more of a natural product that does not contain artificial sweeteners, I just saw Sportpharma's weight gainer and the stuff on it is quite impressive! Better than N Large 2, coz it does not only have whey concentrate on it , but with isolates and hydrosylates too.I know not as great as Cyto, Tru-mass or Real gains, but those contains too much artificial sweeteners> So I think I'll opt to try Sportpharma's gainer powder. I am an ectomorph, 6'2, 200 who struggles to put on mass but I generally stay cut. i've been using cytogainer and ON goldwhey for about a month and have put on 5 lbs muscle. Will continue this regime as I am making huge strides in strength, am staying cut, and am gaining lean mass.
I typically take 2 scoops of ON whey mid-morning (about 50g's protein) and take a full serving of Cytogainer 4 scoops (54g's protein) after workout... and use ON again a few hours before bed. ON goldwhey is great before bed because it keeps the carbs to a minimum.
Does anybody else use a regime consisting of both a gainer and a traditional whey? would love to know
Cytogainer tastes absolutely great, rocky road is great. ON cookies' n cream doesn't taste good, bad aftertaste... i will have to try something more traditional like chocolate next time and hopefully not as bad. but hell i'll stomach anything as long as it is good fuel for the body.

I first took ON 100% Whey (dbl chocolate is yummy) with my regimen which includes creatine. I took it (with soymilk) in between meals and before going to bed. I gained 10lbs after a few months. Then I didn't gain anymore after that so I switched to a gainer and decided to buy Cytogainer (strawberries n cream has a weird flowery aftertaste) after some research. I also take extra creatine in addition to the 3g already present in CytoGainer. I also supplement with a multi-vitamin, fish oil, and HMB. I gained an extra 3 lbs after a month. This while only taking 2 scoops of Cytogainer in between meals and before going to bed. I'm almost finished with my tub of CytoGainer and this time might switch to Real Gains since I got a sample of that from BB and it tasted awesome (like Designer Whey's which I think makes the best tasting chocolate flavored whey) plus lately CytoGainer has been sending me to more trips to the john for some reason.
I have a question, can one only take enough protein? Wouldn't it be excreted by your system if you've saturated yourself with it? My boss told be that it is bad for your liver to take too much of it plus I read that it may weaken your bone if you overdose for a long time. I also read that you can compensate from too much protein by drinking water. How much water you have to drink in equivalent to the amount of protein you are taking?

Well you've heard it from me and another user that Strawberries n Cream and Cookies n Cream both have a bad aftertaste. So avoid those. I think it's harder to replicate the taste of fruit flavors rather than chocolate or vanilla without causing a weird aftertaste. So my advice is to avoid fruit flavors just to be on the safe side. I have not tried CytoGainer's chocolate flavor, but all the chocolate flavors that I have tasted (ON 100% Whey, Real Gains, Designer Whey, Met-RX Whey) are good.

As much as you may not like it. you really should drink your weight gainer shake/drink as soon as you are done working out or atleast within 45 mins after your workout. That is when the most protein is absorbed into your broken down muscles.
Right now i am drinking one when i get up for work in the morning, one at lunch, and one right after i finish working out. Sometimes i will drink one before i goto bed but i am trying to ration
my gainer so i usually only have 3 a day.

If you want to cut costs on weightgainers make your own. All ya need is
Bulk protein with good Amino/BCAA profile
Gallon Skim Milk
Quality EFA blend or flax oil
Fiber blend
Fruit (bannana's Strawberries etc)
ice
blender
Optional Get bulk green powder to add or multivit powders. What ever ya think should be in it.
Heck you can even throw in a scoop of your favorite ice cream from time to time.
It's more time consuming but you will end up having a better weight gainer and paying less.

I took Ultimate Nutrition 2544 all last summer along with no explode and saw some of my best gains ever. I just purchased a 10LB tub of ultimate nutrition and I might switch to Universal after it's done because of all the hype. Sure like Muscle Juice 2544. Here in Portugal it's pretty hard to obtain supplement at an affordable price, and by far the best quality/price product is this one. Check it out:

Real Gains from Universal taste pretty good (better than CytoGainer) especially the chocolate. I agree with the mixability. It doesn't mix as well as ON.

I am taking ON serious mass I went from 185-220 in 8 weeks. I take 2 shakes a day one after working out and one in the evening. I mix the vanilla with PB and milk and it tastes great. 1500 calories per serving.
I'll second that, good value for money too. You get it in 12lb bags, and teh chocolate flavour is lovely. Only thing is, I'd really recommend using a blender as it is quite thick.

I just ordered Cyto-Gainer and I also take ON 100% whey. Should I take both? mix? or what?
Thanks
^^ Would also like to know.
I've been on cytogainer for almost two months now, and have put on 17lbs, while only gaining 3%b/f(143-160lbs, 6'0)
I was wondering, however, to save money, could I substitute one scoop of 100%ON whey for one of cyto? It is getting expensive ordering 4 tubs of cyto every two weeks. I take 3 4scoop shakes a day, so I go through them quick. One for breakfast, PWO, 1-2hrs before bed.
Also, is cyto too many carbs before bed? Should I stick to just the ON Whey before bed? I read that we should consume P+C after our WO, but does that include before bed?

cytosport cytogainer is in my opinion the best, it beats out real gains and other top contenders simply b/c of its complex carbs and that small amount of creatine.
ON pro complex gainer is also one of my favorites, i use this in conjunction with cytogainer.
ive got super fast metabolism, i use to weigh 130lbs and im about 5'9, so im really skinny. but with cytogainer, taken after workout, and pro complex gainer taken right before bed(pro complex has different whey sources so it lasts longer), i gained up to 145lbs in 3months. i started at 2500 calories first week and upped 200-250 cals every week thereafter.
my next goal is to hit 160 in another 3-4months.

ive been on ONs serious mass ever since ive been lifting and I love it. seems to work great. I only take half a serving (1 scoop) during a workout and another scoop later in the day if i am behind in calories.
I do not like the mass gainers that mix creatine and NO because those supplements should be taken at a percise time which is NOT when I take my mass gainer (aka MealReplacementShake really)
taking supplements at the correct times will yield you much better results. IF you dont already know it, you must read on it!

Anyone tried Champion Heavyweight Gainer 900. It was voted the best tasting weight gainer out there. Although I read that it is too sweet and thick so just use 2 scoops instead of the recommended 4 scoops and mix it with milk. Otherwise, I still prefer Cytogainer, great taste, great mixability, great quality ingredients.

for the cyto gainer do you have to take the actual serving amount? or can you adjust it to your own figures, because i swear ive read that 55g of protein or more doesnt get fully digested? :S
This is a complete fallacy started a while back by some very missinformed person and has managed to circulate around and poison the minds of the inocent.
The body adjusts to the amount of protein it needs and the amount you take in. If your body becomes used to taking in 400g of protein per day it will be digested and utilized just fine with little waste. Believe me, you are not going to get there eating only 30g at a time.
Anyways, this is truly a case of the blind leading the blind, don't follow.

BTW- What kind of fat gains are you guys seeing with these products and do you mainly use it to help you reach your caloric goals while bulking in order to not have to eat as much "whole" foods?
I just ended my current bulking phase and used more of a "meal replacement" not a weight gainer and saw very little fat gain. I got up to about 3400 cals so eating all that food gets to be tough.

I ate 27 scoops in 2 and a half days since I got it on Friday because it just tasted so good. Maybe my body was telling me something was in there it needed.
I went to the gym and when I looked in the mirrow I seriously grew but still looked cut and squatted for 5 reps a weight I need help with last week today.
I think all the hard work I've been doing had drained some stuff out of me and this optibol replenished it. (doesn't colostrum do this or something?)
(I heard that your immune proteins suffer sometimes when overtraining and your body won't start worrying about muscle until it gets all its immune needs first)
Optiobl just has better ingredients than anything possibly. All your vitamins, all your fats, MCTs, CLA for fat burning, n-acetyl carnitine for sugar burning, a lot of fiber so it digests more fully and slower and reduces insullin senstivity making less insulin clear more sugar and thwarting diabetes, micellar casein, whey isolate, milk protein, all your vitamins, taurine, glutamine, colostrum, lactoferrin, lactoperoxidase, creatine (but low dose), and it just tastes awesome...
and its the cheapest protein any where except for plain whey concentrate...really really cheap...you will eat twice as much because of this per dollar and even more (hard gainers who don't have big appetites) because it tastes good

I'm 5 feet 8 inches tall and 130 pounds. I've been using this stuff for three weeks and have gained about 2 pounds. So that's pretty good I think. For the taste I would give it a 7. It's way too thick and I always blend it with milk. It also makes me feel really full and the last part of the shake is always nasty. The after taste is ok and I got the chocolate kind. Hope that helps.

I'm curious how you guys judge a 'good' weight gainer. If you gained 10 lbs in a month, was it mostly lean mass, or a lot of fat?
I guess for me a good weight gainer has to be something that: 1) allows me to consume more calories easier than eating another whole food meal, 2) tastes good (or good enough to want to keep taking it every day), and 3) is inexpensive.
I've had success gaining weight with NOW carbo gain. It is just maltodextrin (a carb) and I mix it with pre- and post-workout shakes, as well as sometimes a late night shake. It doesn't have much of a flavor itself; it really just makes your shake have a creamy taste/consistency. It is pretty easy to use for adding some calories to change a maintenance diet into a bulking diet. And it only costs about $2/lb.

Cytogainer is by far the best I have tried. I take a little preworkout and a 3/4 serving post. I took a lot of time off from serious lifting, but with cytogainer and some creatine I have gained 10 lbs in two weeks! I'm scared to be let down by anything else. I tastes pretty good, too. I don't think it has the glycocyamine like muscle milk, either.

Wow! That SHWG 1200 even has a superior ingredients list and it's all natural with no aspartame. It also uses whey protein rather than beef protein that the HWG 900 uses. Does it taste as good as Cytogainer and Real Gains? They say the 1200 has lower lactose so did you still have problems with it?

Im a big cytogainer fan here too, it doesn't f**k up my digestive system, and they have enough different good flavors (rocky road, chocolate, strawberry cookies n cream) that I don't get sick of it.
However, lately, I've discovered the economic virtues of mixing Now's maltodextrin with any protein powder (I get Sportpharma whey in big bags really cheap at Costco) and making my own gainer. The maltodextrin sometimes clumps, so I add that to the liquid first (sprinkling it in gradually while I stir), then the protein, maybe a tablespoon of flax oil too. When I want extra calories, I'll blend in some banana, ice cream, or even oatmeal.

Food intake, metabolism, recovery ability, etc. play a huge part in how quickly you can gain.
I tend to take Cytogainer in half-servings, usually mixed with milk, a little water to thin it out, and sometimes even some seltzer so it's not so sweet.

Aside from just the expense of that ($35 a week, for 24 weeks is $840), your results are THAT impressive really. Just for example, say you were 180lbs@12%, add 30lbs and 4% you get to 210@16%. You started out with 158.4lbs of lean body mass and ended with 176.4. You also started out with 21.6lb of fat and ended up with 33.6lbs. That means, overall, you gained 18lbs of muscle and 12lbs of fat. Meaning roughly 40% of what you gained was fat. Like I said, not that impressed, good luck losing those 12lbs of soild fat.
