Hi all, I'm asking this here because in my experience guys don't care about their skin much.
I've been tanning for a little while but i want to avoid aging the skin too much. But I also don't want to spend the time to moisturize my entire body every morning/night. Compounding this problem is I usually take a hot bath every night which overdries the skin (sometimes my hot tub which is even worse). So I'm wondering what the EASIEST way to moisturize the skin is, but I also want something effective. Is there anything I can just throw in the tub? A body wash? Oh yeah... and something unscented. :) Any suggestions would be extremly helpful.

Keri Lotion, Fast Absorbing formula, fragrance free is my recommendation. Not greasy like the original Keri.
A tip is not to put moisturizers onto dry skin, but right after you towel off from the shower. Or, if you aren't coming from the shower, rub water onto your skin, dry most of it off with a towel, and then lock the moisture in with a moisturizer.
In reality, moisturizers are incorrectly named. The point is not to use moisturizer to moisten your skin -- use water for that. Moisturizer should be used only to lock in moisture from a recent application of water.

Limit you use of the tub. Hot water dries out your skin.
Do not use soap. This just strips you skin of oils.
Use a moisturizing body wash in the tub or shower. There are unscented ones so you don't have to worry about smelling like flowers. :)
Baby oil in the tub (watch you don't slip) and then put baby oil on as soon as you get out when your skin is still damp. Just get the cheap store brands.
If my skin is really bad and I am in the tub..... I put vaseline all over while I am still in there. It spread easier against wet skin.
I do this about once every week or so.
And if you don't want to "age"....quit tanning. Not even a lite tan is good for the skin.
Use sunless tanners if you want some color.

Hey, don't put your hair down in that tub after you pour the baby oil in there! I did this once with Skin So Soft -- not very smart! Also, stay away from those tanning beds! Self tanners work great! Finally, I use Vaseline Intensive Care Moisturizer or Lubriderm -- I put them on as soon as I get out of the shower while my skin is still moist.

is it true what they say about it better to shower at night before bed so your skin is protected all day with the natural oils your skin produces and keeps it from drying out?
i heard this somewhere, can't remember, i dont think i could handle not showering in the morning lol

lol same here, except since i cut my hair, instead of having long curls i now wake up looking like a black haired shirley temple, even when i do straighten it.
imagine how much money we would save if we didnt have to shampoo and condition everyday like some women. *sigh* :)

well dude, i am a guy (and a damn sexy one at that) :D and i find the easiest way to moisturize your skin is to use baby oil while you are in the shower... it takes 2 mins at the end of the shower and if you put it on while the water is still on u can rinse b4 u get out and not be so greasy. or if u are into moisturizing with cream u can mix your own... i buy a cheap vitamin E enriched cream from london drugs and then in a smaller squeeze bottle i mix it with some vitamin E oil and some vaseline.. it will leave skin greasy but i only use it for hands b4 bed so it don't bother me...

I do the baby oil in the shower as well. It works great that way. I also like using a the Vitamin E lotion. This is really good even after using the baby oil from the shower. I have been tanning from beds for quite some time now, off and on. I am mostly seasonal. I love the tan but I am not wanting the wrinkle. I always say I am going to stop tanning, but when the tan fades, I really hate it.
What's really bad is even when I see a girl that has fair skin and she is really pretty it really makes me want to stop and I still can't.
Ok, getting of the subject.... :-) I just wanted to add that the oil in the shower and vitamin E lotion afterwards is really a great thing... Not sticky either.

Tone....it is tough to give up that tan. I used to bake in the sun as a teenager. That was back before sunscreens. I would use the baby oil and sunreflectors. Luckily I lived in a cold climate, so I could only do this about 2 months out of the year. Otherwise I would be looking like a prune right now at age 47. As it is, I have alot more wrinkles than I want. And those small skin cancers are being removed every year.
Tanning beds now make it possible for anyone, anywhere to tan all year round. Not a good thing at all.
And there is no such thing as a safe tan. A tan is the body's defense against the abuse the rays do to it.. But once you got the tan, you have already caused the damage.
Be good to your skin...use self tanners if you want that golden glow.

the only problem with self tanners is, when you use it on your back coz it can be a problem when your wanting it all over, also with uneven tanning and colour is a problem sometimes, if you have someone to help you, go for it, i'm taking care of my skin now that i live in a cold climate. go to the beach in moderation
Also remember the people that will get wrinkles first are the ones that smoke and spend too much time in the sun. take care.....

you both make awesome points. I think that no matter what the beds are just as bad as the sun. I go 2 times a week for 10 min each. I moisurize nearly daily. I am lucky that I have pretty much moisurized since I can remember. I really love smooth skin.
But I to remember laying in the sun with baby oil and iodine. How stupid!!!!

Hey, thanks for all the answers. I went to Safeway, looked around and couldn't find fragrance free baby oil.. so I got the regular kind. Luckily I didn't use much at first. That stuff STINKS. But it made my skin feel great.
So I'm wondering.... Did I look in the wrong place (baby care)? Does anybody know if any of these places would have it...
Wal-Mart
K-Mart
Rite Aid
I really don't want to go all over town looking for it... is there a specific brand I can look for? Thanks again.

Hi,
I have had alot of problems with dry skin especially in the winter (I'm originally from Canada). I have been to see my share of dermatologists in the past and they all say the number one mosturizer is actually petroleum jelly (vaseline). (If you look at the most expensive mosturizers they all contain some petroleum jelly in them ) Best time to put it on is in the evening when you are still damp from shower/bath. Its a bit greasy so it won't work in the morning (unless you want greasy clothes) , so put some old trackpants or pj's on for awhile before climbing into bed so you don't smear the stuff all over your furniture til it has time to penetrate into your skin.
I love the hot baths too, but unfortunately, they aren't good for your skin...crank the temp down a notch or two...you'll get used to it after awhile and your skin will thank you for it!

What's a good vitamin E moisturizer that has alot of vitamin E in it. I know dumb question but the stuff I have says it has vitamin E on it, but I want a product that is cheap and has a ton of Vitamin E in it (as I'm trying to heal scars as mentioned in another post)

You can purchase straight vitamin E oil. It is found in most GNC's or even health food stores. Another alternative is, baby oil with vitamin E. I my self find that most lotions that even say they have vit E do not work as well as the oil itself. I also recomend putting it on while you are still in the shower. If you put it on while your body is still wet with water it will help the oil to moisturize better. Not to mention it takes less when you are wet than when you are dry.

02-19-2003, 06:53 PM
Why not get a tube of straight Vitamin E ointment?
Nicolai
02-19-2003, 11:52 PM
cuz ointment is just vit e oil mixed with cream... but they never put very much vit e in it... so i like to buy the oil and add to the cream then i can put alot in and also then i can apply the straight oil to scars ect.

Good thread. My skin is doing horrible right now. It is so dry.
I need to apply moisturizers more frequently. I have been trying to drink the hell out of water too, that seems to help a bit, but not enough!
I need to find a good facial moisturizer. I tried Neutrogena on my face and it is not feeling good at all. It actually stung abit and my skin feels dryer than ever now (I put it on this morning)
Any recommendations for the best facial moisturizers?
tone-n-up
02-27-2003, 09:52 PM
I would think that a good bottle of Vitamin E cream would work wonders for you. I am guessing that the neutrogena has some sort of fragrance in it angd that could be why it stung. I myself normally uses Lancome moisyurizer. But I recently after 4 or 5 years have been trying just vitamin E. I am really liking the way it makes my skin look.
Another thing to, make sure you are geeting enough vitamin E in your diet as well as enough of your good fats. My scalp was starting to get very dry and yet my hair was more oily until I made it a point to eat more of the good fats. It seems so strange to me, to actually put oil on my foods to make them more greasy... hahahaha I am using the UDO's Ithink that has helped me out alot. I am only using 1 TBSP a day.
Hope this helps.

Is that flax seed oil?

UDO'S is a bottled brand name of the good fats. It holds the 3,6, and 9's of the good fats. I really like it. It has a peanut oil taste to it and it is awesome on salds with vinegar.
I make a salad with lettuce, cottage cheese, chicken breast strips (southwestern style) 1 tbsp Udo's, vinegar and pepper rings.
Delicious!!!!!!
At any rate, you can find the info on this stuff on the web.

A great moisturizer for your face and body is Cetaphil dry, sensitive skin treatment. You can practicaly rub it in your eyes and it wont burn.It is completely perfume free.It is good to get the moisturizer on before you get dry while you`re still in the shower. The moisture will stay bound to your skin instead of being dry and tight later. It disappears without being greasy and leaves a nice sheen to the skin.Karen

Thanks, I'll have to try the Cetaphil.
I tried another product (I'll decline to say the name because I don't want to product bash), but it didn't work well.
I'll pick that up at the drug store and let you know. The skin on my face is always pretty sensitive.

GNC's don't usually carry Udo's oil. I've never seen one carry it yet. I personally think it's a great product. Excellent balance of omega 6 and omega 3 fatty acids. A bottle should cost you around $15-$20...the flavor and smell ain't that great though.

UDO's actually has 3,6, and 9's. I am getting mine from my local Gnc. And as far as flavor, it has somewhat of a peanutty taste. I put it on my salad at one meal and another meal I put it over my chicken and rice. I am really enjoying it and it's benefits

Yes, I forgot to mention that it does have omega 9 as well.
As far as GNC's carrying the product, I was referring to the U.S. stores. I worked for a corporate store for 4 years and we never carried it. I suppose some of the franchised stores may have it.

yes, and we are actually getting our stuff from the UK. We were able to get some things from the states and then just recently they said no more shipments from the states. Now I am really counting on BB.com to get the things I need. My first order came in yesterday though. surprisingly enough (and grateful) it only took a week. I was so happy. And I am really happy with the pricing as well. I have checked the BB.com store and they do not carrythe udos. Maybe the nearest health food store.

Glad to hear that you liked it. I have found that 1 Tbsp a day has really helped me allot. I notice a huge difference in my skin after 1 bottle. I was usoing 2 Tbsp a day for a couple of weeks, but I think I am going to drop to 1 again because even my hair is getting allot of oil to it.
As for the other foods, just focus on your proteins, carbs, and veggies. And yes of course tthe gallon of water a day atleast.

Living here in the Arizona SW desert, ... some kind of moisterizer is needed. Never used to use any until a few years ago after handling moldy hay and getting a reaction. Took the medicene and it cleared up but my palms were sucked dry of oil. If it is too dry outside, my hands will dry out, palms flake and crack now. However, nothing like what they were when this all started.
Anything with alcohol in it will dry them out worse, so I have stopped using the commercial varieties. I am always counting how far down before "alcohol" shows up as one of the ingredients. Amazing how ubiqtious this shows up, even in the "best" of the products. A friend told me about "Shea Butter" and gave me a tube from "Bath and Bodyworks". Not greasy, stays on for a long time, smells good and my hands feel/look wonderful.
I have tried others though with as much or lessor success. There is a Tea Tree ointment that works well for me that I bought at a local health store. Palmers "Cocoa Butter Formula" (with Petrolatum Jelly, and Panthenol (B-5) is working fine until I get some more Shea butter. Interestingly, this is for nursing mothers to prevent nipples from becoming sore and cracking.
I have a pair of leather lifting gloves for any bad days if the palms do have cracks. Fortunately, the class gym does not use any chalk and if it did, it would chap my palms even worse.

So it seems we need the moisturizer to work on the outside and the oils to work on the inside and permeating the skin!
I live in the Midwest now and I often wonder why people live in cold weather places. I guess because we are born here.

I married into the military. It has definetly been an adventure. I have always wanted the opurtunity to travel and now I have it. We are really anjoying it over here. We did get the chance to go to the Octoberfest last year. It was a lot of fun and we are looking to again this year. I would definetly say if you ever get the chance to come visit anywhere in Europe it is something you will never forget.
We did get a chance to go to Holland last summer as well. That is the place. The Dutch so love to talk with the Americans because then they can speak English. From what I understand, in Holland, if you can speak English that is really cool. And naturally they are so hospitable. I would really like to go there again. One nice thing is it was only 5 hours away. Most of the different countries are wiithin a good reach. And of course you can never forget the Bahnhof (train station). We really enjoy going places on the train. It is very inexpensive and always an experience.
