View Full Version : Freedom Myth's Geriatric Shoulder Rehab & Need 4 Speed Thread

Getting this shoulder thing under control is going to take a while, so I might as well drop the old thread and start a new one. There are no 30lb weight gains or 500lb bench presses in this old fart's near future!!! The current plan is to hold my weight around 235lbs, but drop some bodyfat while I tighten up the shoulders and other joints. I told BicepBabe that i would start a thread for her, but it is up to her to post. She loves to play online, but is more into getting to the gym and lifting than writing it all down, and I won't even begin to describe her so called diet plan!

Feel free to post comments, questions, suggestions... If you came to whine about injuries, no problem, just be sure to post graphic and disgusting pics of any surgeries! Sexually Explicit Posts or Adult Material "will" be tolerated & welcome, but it better be good. LOL ;-) If you share the Need 4 Speed addiction, be it cars, bikes, motorcycles or bottle rockets duct taped to your rollerblades... Bring it on, post away...

ab machine 60
hypers 20
sides 20 each

superset inner rotators with outer:
3 sets of 21 reps in and out

cable row:
2 sets of 12

medium/narrow grip bb bench
3 sets of 12

close grip lat pulls:
2 sets of 12

pec deck:
3 sets of 12

one arm DB shrugs:
2 sets of 15

*kept weights very light and reps up, very minor shoulder pain on both chest moves, but back lifts were ok. so far so good. then hot tub till shoulders loosened up.

I think it's a great thing that you recognize you must do something to get at the underlying problem with your shoulders. Because this is my first year of being aggressive in lifting, I don't want to step away to do what you're doing. But I know I'll almost certainly have to next year.

Smart move. I'll be watching your progress.

...but i just fell off my couch i was laughing so hard! i have actually been doing some work today, and that was the first post i read! considering what i ate b4 bed last night, that future may be here today...

i did, she is a freak of nature... she has mostly just been riding her new bike and catching a workout here and there on my bi-monthly visits to the gym. i just started teaching her a few workouts using things like swords and chucks (wooden sword and padded chucks for her right now) and even that gets her all pumped up and veins sticking out... but check out some of the weight she was doing when i start her thread today. and she said she was not even straining, and is not sore at all...

thanks! workout number one felt really good, just a little embarrassing. the light weights suck, and i just can't have BB lifting more than me in public!!!

it is not easy, 75% of the enjoyment i got from being "in" the gym as opposed to working out at home, was the friendly competition of always trying to do a little more than the next guy... now i have to be careful for a while... that's no fun :-(

i am glad you re-posted that link here. thanks, it is a really good source of info, i can't believe how many people have shoulder injuries. i think so many could have been avoided just by adding those rotator move BEFORE the injury. the right warmup could save a lot of pain later!

i think BB may have read my post about the bowl of cereal...
today she had: 3 eggs, 4 raisin toast, 1 yogurt, 1 banana and a huge glass of skim milk out for me.

then i had a half a box of whole grain cheerios with skim milk a few hours later.

and i have some chicken breasts slow cooking in fat free raspberry pecan dressing for later.

so if i have a good fat free PWO drink, and BB makes ravioli later, that won't be a bad day of eating for me. unless i blow it at the end by eating something terrible, like a tub of butter...

I have always had a theory - there is no main course that is not improved by the addition of bacon, and there is no dessert dish that is not improved by the addition of raspberries.

FM, for those of us who haven't been here that long - How did you injure the shoulder?

I didn't realise you could cook without garlic.
Chocolate and raspberries together (without chicken) is as close to sex as food can get ;)

I bought some Valrhona chocolate today as I need to start stocking up for holiday truffle making. So I have chocolate on the brain. :) (As if I ever don't!)

Good luck with the rehab, it may take a lifetime (or feel like it anyway). There were a couple good threads on shoulder rehab in the over-35 section. I'd look them up.

you make truffles!!!??? do they ship well? ;-)

the chicken came out perfect, i also always cover it with actual raspberries while it is cooking. my carbs were in the form of kraft cheese noodles, but i used fat free milk powder and fat free butter spray, and only one tablespoon of margarine for 2 whole boxes, so the fat percent was way below normal. skim milk to drink. i ate all that a few hours after my PWO drink, and plan to eat a banana, can of peaches, skim milk and pop tarts in a few hours... (picture the words "pop tarts" in really small print)...

if you don't eat meat, maybe it would work on some tofu?

well, it took a while, several years in fact, to really mess 'em up good...

my left shoulder has been bad for years, but i was used to that and could live with it. it just kept me from doing overhead press and a few other moves i never liked anyway. it took a few nice motorcycle wrecks, years of MMA pounding and benching too much to really make a mess out of it. i think the worst of it came from a bad bench attempt at 555lbs. i did 505 clean and thought i was done, i made it onto the chalk board. but my buddy did 525 and put me at the very bottom, so i tried 555 and did it, but it was sloppy and i felt something very bad in my shoulder.

but more recently, when i started that june to december thread, i decided to be smart and wait at LEAST a month or two b4 adding in the heavy bag and hitting Bob as my cardio... but i didn't wait, i added it in too soon and hit it way too hard. the next day, i felt like i had ripped both of my arms off and used a rusty staple gun to reattach my rotators! LOL... i hope they get better, i had hoped to get another clean bench with 505+ on my 40th B-day, and have my weight over 250lbs and fat below 10% by then...

Truffles are very difficult to ship. I like to make them for the holidays - 4 or 5 flavors. Uber-fattening, as they are basically dark chocolate, cream, and booze. And all that cream means that they don't sit out well. Have to keep them refridgerated. Never have figured out how commercial makers keep theirs from spoiling, tho I'm not sure I wanna know.

i had to give in and drink a huge mountain dew to make it thru... plus messed up and did not alternate back and forth between biceps and triceps as planned... brain dead... but took it light and slow...

so far i like the chest/back day, and the bic/tri day, but the leg ext/leg curl day sucked (tues)... we'll see how friday goes.

You guys kill me with the Tri pushdowns. I use a rope and can comfortably do 50# and 70# is taxing to me. Of course, you guys are stronger, but ....seeing that much seems soooo disporportionate :( Excellent job.

The hot tub: I've heard that it's not good to jump in one right away after working out? Or perhaps it was related to NO products? I know cold water causes restriction, but I thought there was something negative about the hot water too :confused:

triceps have always been easy for me, i have had bicep babe stand on the stack and still pushed out 6 reps... but i can't spread the rope with good form on those heavy ones. it is biceps that are so hard for me to grow. i can get them stronger, but it is really hard to get them bigger...

cold water causes shrinkage! cold water is bad. and should be avoided at all times! hot water is our friend :-)

actually, i remember some old studies that i also tested on myself... if you do like 5 min of very hot water and 3 min of cold, back and forth for about 30-45 min right after you lift. it really speeds healing and prevents DOMS. i works, but i hate cold water. i can take any heat, but that cold water plunge feels like it could give me a heart attack.

i am afraid to go into the kitchen, it is NOT gonna be pretty. like grocery shopping when you are hungry... not a good idea.

you are going to eat now too? so are you a fellow "up all nighter" or is it early there? sometimes i forget people are all over the time zones in here!

Huge ditto. When we lost power after Wilma last year, it was hotter than Hades but I still couldn't bring myself to take cold showers. I was doing the hokey pokey -- sticking one part in at a time. :)

i used do LMT in FL. and NMT with a Chiro, and sports rehab NMT at a PT center. man everybody wants to be your new best friend when they find out!

hibby's weather talk has infected my thread! it is NOT looking good for the car show sunday :-(

Saturday night: Thunderstorms, especially during the evening. Warm. Low 71F. Winds SW at 5 to 10 mph. Chance of rain 40%.

Sunday: Gusty winds with scattered afternoon thunderstorms. A few storms may be severe. High 82F. Winds SW at 15 to 25 mph. Chance of rain 60%.

or maybe she won't be posting, she just dropped her laptop onto the tile floor HARD... i mean like a ton of bricks! wireless mouse went across room, web cam MIA, cord came out. and i just had it all custom built! it did get the optional shock resistant hard drive, but i don't know if it was meant to be dropped THAT hard???

nope, it rained on and off, so we didn't go... i am sure they still had it, but a bunch of guys that seem afraid to get their cars wet stayed home. i was going to at least go and get pics, but right as i was heading out the door (during a brief bit of sun) dark clouds started rolling in and i went back inside.

that is not fair, i don't cook anything fancy, but i could take pics of food at a restaurant on my phone and upload them when i get home. would steak and sushi get your mouth watering?

a few hours of what i will (thanks to barb) be calling "dirty cardio" as a warm-up. (u were correct DB, the massage got a little out of hand, so to speak...)

ab machine 60
hypers 15
sides 15

superset leg abduction and adduction machines:
100lbs - 3 sets or 21 for each

seated calves:
135lbs - 3 sets of 12

DB side laterals for rehab:
15lb db’s - 5 sets of 15

SLDL: just the oly bar to stretch out
21 reps

dead lift:
135 - 1 set of 12
225 - 3 sets of 4 with only a few seconds rest between
(was going to stay down at 135 for 5 sets of 12 for about a month or so, but they really don’t seem to do anything odd to either shoulder, only muscles i feel working is lower back, so i may play around with different weights each week to see how they feel. all time max was about 555, and the one that counted in comp was 505, but i felt like i could have done more than one. so if i can get to a working weight of 405 on these, i will be happy)

we were going to do some biceps and maybe leg presses, but the caffeine ran out and my son was with us and in a rush to hit the pools and hot tub. he waited patiently for a long time and did a bunch of DB curls.

over all, there are already some things about this workout that i need to move around...

speaking of porn... now that bicep babe has read some threads, and caught your "dirty cardio" comment... that is all i am getting for exercise, thanks a lot! LOL... we missed monday's chest and back workout, and now it is 5 am and i am still up... which means tuesday's work out is really going to suck. and my buddy joined the gym monday and our first workout was supposed to be today. i think i am going to start him on only cardio and stretching for the rest of this week, then add in weights next monday.

but it is partly his fault too, he gave us a huge pizza and i drank gallons of mountain dew... bb has been asleep for a few hours now, but i am still wired.

i am going to down a glass of grape juice with creatine, glutamine and GABA... drop a handful of melatonin under my tongue and see if i can sleep for a little while.

i am still up (maybe i better say awake given the current topic) from tuesday and my only down time since sunday was a few hours monday night... and about to hit the road to the very bottom of VA. we may be adding a new addition to the pack. we are going back to where i bought my doxie Henry. there are several we want to look at, but i will attach pics of a few b4 we head out the door.

well, 2 of the ones we went to see were still too young to take... and the other one we picked was not for sale, they were keeping her. so i was pretty discouraged... but while we were looking at some of the others i heard fred talking to his wife about how adamant i seemed about the one they needed to keep... it took them 6 years to get a female that color for breeding, they have been breeding mini doxies since 1956, and that is also where i got henry. so they took us into another section where her 3 sisters were. they were also not for sale, but he said i could pick one out anyway. as soon as we saw her we new the one we wanted. she is a long hair light cream 13 week old female. pretty rare color, super sweet, and henry likes blondes... so...

they have a guest house for people to use that drive from far away, so we stayed and left the next day. we had henry with us too, so it was quite a trip.

i have taken some quick pics and will try to post some tonight.

My very best dog was a female Rottweiler, she had a stroke and we put her down about 10 years ago. Just a phenomenal dog, barked only when neccessary, never jumped a 4' chainlink fence, very obediant and dispatched stray cats with gusto. that is funny, we hav always had rotts, JRT's and mini doxies... JRT's can be a big handful, depending on the family lines and build... they can clinb any fence, dig, jump, etc... so if they are not trained to listen early, you can be in for trouble. but they are very smart, the females seem better for pets and to live indoors.

i do believe u r correct... she is doing 12 reps and not looking like she is anywhere close to pushing herself.

i am proud of her though, her lifts and the muscles built from it all draw stares and get comments all the time.

yep, we made it. and we finally set up a schedule that will fix it so that my friend that joined can get in with us at least 3 of the 4 days... he will be on his own friday mornings at 6 am doing leg ext and leg curls and calves. you won't catch me there at that time!

but his basic diet, supps and workout are all set up now, and tonight was our first time in all together. he did great. he has lifted in the past and has good size. 6 foot, 285lbs... so we are going to cut down the bodyfat while building some muscle and joint strength. goal number one will probably be to hit about 245lbs.

Hey bud, I gave the arm another 8 hours and about 50% of purple has faded and the bruising is about 30% less than what it was last night. Swelling down a little too but I know it needs more time to heal, probably a week from Sunday.

Although getting up early is a pain, I like being in the gym early because the crowd is thin, and most of the people there are either doing cardio or working with DB's. Although there were two guys who were curling in the squat rack this morning..

any weird grinding in your elbow? i know you probably hate getting x-rays, i do to. they tell you how safe it is, then they cover your important parts with a bullet proof lead shield, and run hide in another room behind a 5 foot thick wall... but i like to see my medical insurance at work. i would still go and get some pics of the bones, just to be sure. it sounds like you went down hard.

i did the same thing the last time i slid down the road on my bike. i used my knee to save the paint. it is amazing how fast the road burns thru denim, skin, etc! i picked all the rocks, glass and misc debris out myself later that night with beard trimming scissors, scrubbed it with alcohol and peroxide and fell asleep. then i limped around the next day cause i was too busy to waste time at the doc. but i was feeling a little popping and somebody noticed a bunch of blood leaking out my pants leg and all over my darn shoe... so i figured i might as well let them take a look. the doctors were all pissed off and giving me a bunch of crap about waiting so long to come in... and so on. then they tell me they are sure it is fractured and i need a skin graft, but they x-rayed and x-rayed till i glowed in the dark, and could not find any cracks. i also never went back for any skin grafting. it healed fine on it's own IMO...

i hate it when it is crowded too. waiting for a machine or weights throws off your rest time...

isn't that a pain? the only time anybody should be using the squat rack to curl is if they are curling at LEAST 225lbs+... and even then, their lazy ass is still keeping people from being able to use the rack for squats. it is not that hard to bend over and pick up the bar off the ground to curl. some people probably don't even realize how bad they piss people off when they do that. there should be a sign that says "this is a squat rack, for squats. if you are not doing squats, please get the hell away from this rack" LOL !!! i have really busted a few people badly on that one when i used to do heavy squats and needed the rack.

Nothing other than pain when I extend my arm and a difference in the feel of a muscle from one side to the other. I will probably go see my regular doc tomorrow and he will probably order xrays. Swelling is down about 50% or more overall and maroon brusing is gone.

if, by "puppies" you mean the wiener dogs, they have been good until today, they have been testing my limits! now Beatrix Kiddo (the new puppy) has not been too bad, she only had one little accident... but Henry is 3 and he was really bad today... why is it always the MALES that cause so much trouble? i have taken on some ear damage, or infection, or something painful... and he KNOWS THIS! but he took off out the door and made me chase him all the way out to the middle of the island. i could have killed him!!!

but if you mean BicepBabe's boob job, that is on hold... so to speak, LOL...

have you been covering up pain with motrin or anything like that? or did you just forget? i do that with my shoulder sometimes. i will reach behind a car seat to grab a folder or something and really feel the pain when i come over the headrest with said item in hand...

I have taken a few ibuprofen but it won't cover up this pain. I just wasn't paying attention. I had just returned with Icy Hot and an ACE bandage. I will wear it for a while today and see how it feels this evening. My work schedule is mostly open tomorrow but my Doc is normally booked solid with kids on Monday's. It may be Tuesday before I can get in.

I will probably start squatting again tomorrow, the only difficulty will be hoisting 45's to shoulder level.

As much as I don't want to, I *might* start crunches too. These are my least favorite exercise bar none, especially when a muscle contraction curls me up like a pill bug.

i am going to try to get there today for chest and back... (that was supposed to be monday evening) my ear still hurts and a few other odds and ends... i would have gone late last night, but could not get in touch with the friend i am training, he crashed his laptop, and he needs it for both work and home... and he has no backup system. i tried to help, but had to send him to the computer shop. i hope they at least were able to save all he data, and set him up with a backup for the future...

my ear AND neck are both messed up, and my kidney is not right either :-(

the scary part is that she says she still can't feel it and wants to do more! but i am trying to take her back up slowly so she avoids all the injuries i get.

i want her doing a clean 10 reps with 135lbs and no spot for a while b4 going up in weight or doing sets of 4-6 reps... i also have her doing my shoulder rehab work, even though she has no shoulder problems. it pre fatigues her shoulders to keep her bench weight down and will hopefully prevent future problems. i should have her doing double her bodyweight by next year.

no REAL painkillers, just a few motrin. i will take just about anything, but i don't like painkillers or anything that knocks you out or tears down muscle and connective tissue (like almost all pain killers, even OTC)...

i have been slacking on the weights for sure. my 4 day plan has been more like 2-3 days per week... i have been working on some other training that has taken some of the steam out of my weight days, and work has been pretty bad... but that's how it goes.

had to workout at home

superset abs and leg lifts in between each lift

superset bench and lat pulls
5 sets of bench x 10
5 sets of lats x 10

shrugs
5 sets of 12-15 reps

5 min DE bag
1 min rest
5 min Bob bag/heavy bag
1 min rest
5 min G/P bag

cardio and other work 5 min

FM, I have not ridden the Buell, I do think it has some sweet technology but the V-twin is seriously old school. I happen to like torque and if it wasn't taking 450.00 plus a month to feed my Cummins I would not have sold the beast. So yes, I would enjoy the torque at low revs of the 1200cc but the vibration would put everything to sleep.

I have ridden several Max's and they are awesome if the road is straight. The last Max was outrageously powerful, it had an exhaust, jet kit, v-boost mod, lowered, drag bars...it was handful but undeniably fun.

i am a torque fiend myself. i love big V8's and V10's in cars, and V4's in bikes.

that was one of the reasons i bought the VFR. it would be sweet to find a last year V-max. the V-rod is nice too, and can be made to go pretty fast. porsche did designwork for that motor, so it should be pretty tight. the guys at my motorcycle shop were really pushing the ZX14 and busa on me when i was in there looking around. everything is on sale.

what was that other honda... the last time i remember seeing the pic was when i bought my VFR... i need to try to find it. i think it was a V4 and more naked...

i road a little today, but it was cold... and just watched superbikes on speed TV. i would go out and ride now, but it is cold and i am tired. bad combo...
