As any health-conscious person knows, supplements are a vital part of any nutritional regimen. They are a necessary part of living a healthy lifestyle regardless of whether you are a professional bodybuilder or someone who is just trying to lose a few pounds. Many people, myself included, find it difficult to stick to their supplement schedule, but as you will discover, supplements not taken on a regular, calculated basis don't do much for the body. You may get that initial creatine pump or that extra jolt of energy, but the effects are limited. It is generally only after extended use do you see any real results. The trick with supplements, as with all aspects of training, is to be consistent and have a plan. I have found that if you take a moment to plan out a schedule it becomes immensely easier to take all the necessary supplements. Now that I have established that fact, I will answer the questions asked below...

How do you remember to fit in all of your supplements?

This one is easy. As I stated above, planning is the key. Sit down the night before and make a list, either mental or on paper, of all the supplements you need to take the next day and when you need to take them. Even if you don't make a physical list it is still good to set up a timeline in your head. Refer to that list over the next twenty-four hours and follow it to a T. Trust me, it will make taking all those pills and shakes much easier. You can also set a watch alarm to go off whenever you need to take something, but that isn't really necessary. Alright, now you have a proper schedule, but how do you bring those all those supplements with you everywhere you go? That question leads me to my next point.

How do you bring your protein shakes with you to work/school? Do you break out your daily or weekly supplements into containers to make it easier? What do you use?

This one may be tricky, but, as I've said before, the answer is planning. For the purposes of this article, let us assume that you take creatine before and after the gym, three multivitamin capsules per day (morning, noon, night), four ZMA capsules at night and you take two protein shakes per day. If not planned out this amount of supplements can be extremely cumbersome. It is impossible to carry a jar of creatine, a jar of protein, a bottle of vitamins, and ZMA capsules wherever you go. It is simply too much stuff. Split it up into smaller, individual servings. I have found that the small Nalgene 'wide-mouth' bottles are great for powders; creatine or protein. Go to your neighborhood sports store and grab as many as you can. They're cheap. They also come in many, many different colors, which make the whole experience of drinking a shake so much more fun. If you are taking four powder supplements a day, as is assumed in this article, you only need four bottles, but I would get six to be safe. Then sit down the night before, measure out the portions, put them into the bottles and you're all set. For the vitamins and ZMA capsules, go to the drugstore or someplace like Vitamin Shop and get a small pill case. Throw your daily dose of capsules in there and you're good to go. It doesn't matter if you are taking these supplements on the road or at home. Portion them out and it will be easier. Now, some people can be self conscious about carrying a bag of supplements with them throughout the day and, to tell you the truth, it can be a drag. My best advice is to get a cool backpak or purse and throw them in there. Even a briefcase or laptop bag will work. Shoot for whatever makes you comfortable. If anyone says anything about the bag you're carrying just shoot them a mean look and show them your bicep. They'll walk away guaranteed.

Do you write out a daily checklist?

By this point in the article it should be clear that planning is necessary, but a formal checklist may not be. As long as you know what has to be done don't worry about having to check off a list after you have had a supplement.

How do you mix your protein shakes at work/school?

This is personal preference. When I take my supplements, protein or creatine, I just use water to mix them. Water is generally available in any place you go, where as something like milk may not be and will spoil if not refrigerated. Using water also helps to keep you hydrated better than another liquid. Basically, water is just easiest. I always have a bottle of water with me anyway so mixing isn't a problem.

That's basically it. Plan out your day and fitting in all of those supplements will be easy as pie.

Hi BB fans !!!
This is the first time i'm saying something in the "topic of the week" section, therefore i would like to write some previous notes (very simple but important):
1- I'm not writing to win anything, i'm writing for the same reason i joined bb.com forum, wich is to learn and share experiences with other fans of the sport;
2- I'm portuguese, i live the Azores (nine small islands 1600 Km west of Lisbon - that's right, somewhere in the midlle of the Atalntic Ocean), therefore english is not my main language (portuguese is, naturally), so i might as well say i'm sorry for the mistakes i'm about to make in my writing (but i hope you get the picture).
3- I hope i can answer by the rulles!

Now, moving on...

How do i manage to take all of my supplements each day?
The way i see it, taking my supplements is just as normal as doing the most common taskes during the day. I mean, if you love the sport, like i do, it's in your guts, there's no need for any particular technique to remind me of anything. It just works naturally. When you turn bb into a kind of lifestyle, like i do (or at least i try to), things happen in a natural way, because that's how you live your life, know what i mean?

The funny part (now that i think of it) comes with all the work during the day to make sure that you don't skip the meals and all the rest that comes with it.

That takes us to the next question: How do i bring my protein shakes to work?
Well, in the first place, i only take protein shakes after my workouts (4 times a week). During the day (7 days a week) i try to eat whole meals 5 to six times a day.
I consider myself a lucky person because i work 7 to 8 hours a day (monday to friday), and i have time to make 1 hour lunch at home somewhere in the middle of the day.
This means that when i leave home in the morning, after my oatmeal breakfast and my single capsule of the day of multi mineral and multi vitamin supplement, i take with me (inside a small container) one whole meal (the rest of yestarday's dinner) to eat somewhere between 10:30 and 11:00.
By 1:30 pm i´m having my lunch at home (where i take my capsule EFA - omega 3), and i can prepare my next meal of the day, somewhere between 4:00 pm and 4:30 pm. Again, it goes with me to the office in a small container (the rest of today's lunch).
By this time i've taken four meals, breakfast and lunch with more calories, the other two are small (but whole food) meals. And no, i don't spend all my free time cooking meals, i just make sure that nothing goes to the garbage.

By the end of my working day (allready at home again), on my traning days (only) i take my pre workout supplement. Do i need anything to remind me of it? Hell no, i'm so excited i'm going to the gym today. Maybe i forgot a lot of other things but not that one, that's for sure (it´s been like this for the last three years).

Do i write a daily check list ?
I guess that by now you allready know my answer to that question. I don't have to !!! Do you use a daily check list to remind you that you should wash your teeth, or that you should take your showers ? Of course not, because it's in your system. That's the same with me when it comes to meals and supplements towards bodybuilding (and, of course, washing my teeths and taking my showers, don't you worry about that to).

How do i mix my protein shakes?
Well, on my workout days the protein powder goes with me to the gym in a shaker inside my gym bag, mixed with dextrose (35g and 60g).
I use water to mix it, and i take it in the gym right after my workout. This gym ritual happens four times a week, as i've told you above.

So, on trainning days, and when it comes to supplements, by this time i've taken my vitamins (at breakfast), my EFA (at lunch), my pre workout supplement (all of the above are taken at home) and my post workout supplement (wich is taken in the gym). Am i a lucky guy or what???

Finnally, after having my fifth whole food meal of the day (dinner) - guess where? you win, at home !!! - i eat a small snack befor goin to bed - witch i'm about to do after i write this - to witch i add one teaspoon of glutamine (no zma for me).

And this is it my friends of the iron sport.
No need for any check list what so ever. The way i see it, once you're bitten by the bodybuilding bug, like i've been (unfortunetly for me only at the age of 28), it all happens naturaly, because you have it in your system 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 52 weeks a year.
And as i've shown all you need is one shaker, two small containers (i don't know any other word in english to call it), and passion for the sport.

Well, that's all folks !!!
Hope i didn't break any of the section rules.
If i did it´s due to my lack of experience in the forum.
It's great, thought, to share my experience with the bb.com comunity, and, believe me, i'm not running to win, just for the pleasure of running.
Thank you bb.com forum for the question.
Best regards to sker2351 for his article, i think it's great.

The best to you all, from your iron friend.

Put the supplemnets out the night before. I take them as soon as come into the kitchen, heading out to the gym. If there are spplements to take upon my return, they're also out on the kitchen counter. It only takes a few minutes to get them ready before turning in for the night.

For me it's much easier to have it all out on paper, something I can look at and follow step by step.

Here's my current supplement/meal plan:

http://img227.imageshack.us/img227/4149/consumptionplanlf8.jpg

I change it every 4 weeks, so I'm going to say that sucks soon heh.

I've found I stick to my diet better doing this. However, when I'm out and about, I carry a pocket vitamin container, pictured here:

And consume them with any drink I can get. Pretty simple, bye now :)

Well this is a some what easy subject for. First of all I'm a United States Marine deployed in Iraq. Taking supplment out here is more simplistic then it is when I'm at home. First off I carry my assault pack everywhere I go. So I can throw all my supplments in my pack. I also recently switched over to using Universal's Animal line. It has everything you need in one simple pack. I take the M-stack in the morining before I go to chow then i will take my fat burners around lunch and at dinner also. Then I take the Animal PAK right after lunch since my work out will be about 3 hours after lunch. Then I take the Stak2 30 min before my workouts. Then after my work outs I will use Animal Nitro G. It is grape flavored even though im usaly not a fan of grape this tates great. Then after all that I hit up dinner usally 30 to 45 minutes after the Nitro G. Thats about it for me I carry all the packs and my shaker cup with me. I have them timed to when I work out and when I eat. That is it. And that is how I take all my supplements each day.

It’s tough to remember to take my supplements in one day. I’m still new so when like a bottle says a months worth, it goes to about a month and a half or longer. I keep telling myself during the day ‘Ok, at this time, you HAVE to take this’ and it also keeps my mind mentally awake. Protein shakes are kind of easy for me. People at my school think I’m weird that I carry my backpack, laptop, AND gym bag wherever I go. They don’t understand that God comes first, then school, family, weight lifting, then me. I lay out all my supplements on my bed before I go to bed and that’s why I make a checklist of what I need to take and at what recommended times.

Something I’ve started using is the Universal Animal products: Animal Pak for my multivitamin (and a little more), Animal Cuts to help shred excess fat, Animal Pump for creatine and nitric oxide boost, and Animal Nitro for my BCAA’s and EAA’s. The packs are great; the cans are greater because all I need are in the packets so I don’t need to carry 20+ containers for everything, I just pop a pack and don’t have to worry. Before when I used to have all the supplements separate, I would put them in either single serving pill bags, or I carried a 7 day pill case to I had all of them with me wherever I went. This would be the multivitamin, fish oils, nitric oxide booster, weight lost pills, and the like. The powders (creatine, glutamine, arginine) were tougher: I had to buy the small bottle and carry them with (see why I carried my gym bag with me?) I would set my cell phone alarm to certain times to tell me when to take the supplements. It would only work if I have my cell phone, some days I would forget it because I would be late to class.

As a workout journal is important in the weight room, a checklist is equally important for food or supplements. It helps keep track of what to take when. Also, I know if I accidentally skip one and I feel off, I can look back and be like ‘well, maybe it was this’. Also, it can correspond to my lifting. If I start a new supplement, I can view my workout to see if I gain any on my lift to see if my weight is going up and the supplement is working. Weight lost is also the same thing. Keep track of the weight and your weight lost supplement to see if progress is being made.

The only thing I don’t like is I got to buy shaker cups like crazy for when I need protein in school or work. I keep 3-5 full of protein all the time so if I’m in class, I just whip one out with a bottle of water every 2-3 hours and that way I keep my protein intake up. At work, I have a tub full of protein so every 2-3 hours, I go and feel the shaker cup up, drop in the protein and chug it down while I’m typing.

Supplements are perhaps one of the greatest friends of athletes. Athletes ranging from novices to olympic stars. The results of these supplements has been shown in all body types, and the people using them will claim they are worth every cent. Although for those using, it is not the question of whether they work, its the question of how to manage thier usage. The answer is here.

How do you remember to fit in all of your supplements?
Remembering to take my supplements every day used to be a difficult task. I was always forgetting them, then laying in bed that night realizing what i had done. That is when i began a new system.
-I take creatine and optimum 100 percent whey. I also take many vitamins, in the mornings after a meal, and in the evenings after i have eaten my dinner. What i have done to remember everything, is to have an organized section of the kitchen to keep everything there and ready. Everytime you walk into the kitchen the large containers are there, and they are unavoidable. This way when i wake up in the morning and it is time to take my protein shake and vitamins, it is there in eye sight, and its first thing that comes to mind. The same thing exist for evening protein and and vitamins. For working out, I have mentally trained myself to take mix my creatine for the workout. Yet, when i am cycling off creatine i still have to keep it mind for when it is time to cycle back on to it.

-Other techniques that could be performed:
-Leave yourself a note in the bathroom or on your dresser. Where ever your going to be in the morning, so it leaves the note in your brain.
-Have somebody in your household remind you every morning, until it just becomes naturally memorized.

After time, supplement use will be become natural like showering and brushing your teeth every day.

How do you bring your protein shakes with you to work/school?
During the school day used to be an interesting task. I used to take the entire large container with me, and this wasn't working. The question is what to do?
-I went out to the store and purchased myself a shaker for liquids. Every night before i go to bed, i fill the shaker with the desired amount of supplement, so when I leave in the morning it is on my dresser waitng to go with me. Mixing protein with skim milk is my preferred prefrence, but at school I don't have this milk readily available. So i use the water fountain at school during lunch. Since it was taken in a shaker, I add the water, and shake. Drink is made and easy to drink.

-Since I do not work a job, i wouldn't have been in that situation. What i have heard though is people with offices will buy plastic containers. In these they will put supplement powder, and they will have it there avaialble. In this situation milk also may be available, this depends on whether the work place has a fridge.

After taking time to think about your scenario, managing supplements during the school/work day will become very easy.

Do you break out your daily or weekly supplements into containers to make it easier? What do you use?
For my drink powders(the creatine and protein), I have never used a container to break it up. The reason for this is the containers they come in are there, and it is the same substance morning and night.

Vitamins are completely diffrent
-I went to the local drug store and purchased myself a weekly vitamin container. Its plastic, with AM and PM every day of the week. This is in that same area of the kitchen with my supplements. This way, as long as you remember the day of the week, error in forgetting to take these should be very unlikely. Then every sunday morning, when i go to take my vitamins and the container is empty, i refil the entire container for the week, and repeat.

Do you write out a daily checklist?
Currently, No.

Have I? Yes!
-When i first started taking supplements it was just to much for me to remember. Always the worry of remembering whether I already had taken a supplement, or whether i completely forgot. The checklist was a very simple tactic that had proven results. I wrote in chronological order every item i was taking daily. Leaving room on the side of the paper, i just checked beside each one everyimte i would take an item. Once i had the list, I never made an error in my useage. The reason I no longer use this tactic is because it has become mentally natural. A checklist is never a wrong idea though, because without it, i still make errors every so often.

How do you mix your protein shakes at work/school?
At school, as i stated above, i have found it easy to take a shaker with the supplement powder in it. During the lunch, I will venture to a water fountain and fill the shaker up. I will shake, and have an easy made supplement. It works very well.

I currently do not work a job, but I have heard a few things that people will do in the workplace.
-People will use shakers with thier supplements and mix at work. As I stated i will do during the school day.
-Those with their own offices, will take an electronic mixer that fits into glasses. Leaving supplements and a cup at work. They are able to plug in their mixer, and blend.
-The final technique is the most basic. People take a spoon and cup to work with thier supplements. Every day they stir it the old fashioned way.

Supplements are the craze amongst athletes, and there is no doubt that they should be. They help in many ways, and they are designed to fit each persons needs. One of the largest problems, and many can agree, is remembering to use your products daily. Hopefully with the above, this problem will begin to dissapear, and eventually vanish!

Hi folks,

For the person taking more than a basic protein powder and multivitamin, maintaining a supplement schedule can be a daunting task. Not only do you have to remember what to take, you have to remember how much, when to take it, what to take it with, and even what NOT to take it with. The more supplements you take, obviously the more complex the task.

How do you remember to fit in all of your supplements?

Making a plan is the first step. Once you've figured out an actual daily supplement schedule, write it all down on a single piece of paper. Make sure your schedule shows when you should take each (i.e. upon waking, before bed, pre and post workouts, with meals, on empty stomach, etc). It's a matter of personal preference how you lay out your schedule; you can organize it by the time of day (i.e. '12:00pm eat lunch and take supplement x), or you can allow yourself more flexibility by organizing it along rules (i.e. 'take x on empty stomach', and 'take y after a workout').

Now post this schedule where you're likely to see it. On the fridge, in a locker, anywhere it will come in handy. I go a step further by posting my own schedule on a personal webpage. That way, it doesn't matter if I'm out of town, at the office, or at home - I can always pull up my homepage and see my personal plan whenever I'm near a computer. I may refer to it several times a day.

How do you bring your protein shakes with you to work/school?

The night before, it's a simple matter to measure out a quantity of protein powder into a shaker with a tight-fitting lid. I stash one or two into my workout bag, which I usually have access to at some point during the day.

Do you break out your daily or weekly supplements into containers to make it easier? What do you use?

Generally, I don't break out my supplements into daily or weekly doses, except for measuring single quantities of protein powder into single shakers for work and the gym. I do, however, purchase most of my supplements in multiple quantities, and leave a 'set' at home and another 'set' at work. I find that far easier than the chore of breaking out daily doses. Plus, I don't run out of the products as quickly. As long as I have access to my schedule, it's a simple matter to open a container and take what is needed.

Do you write out a daily checklist?

No, I find that the written schedule is sufficient. If I haven't been following it, I'm usually well aware!

How do you mix your protein shakes at work/school?

Bringing protein powder to work and the gym in individual shakers makes it easy to mix them with water on the spot. I tend to purchase brands that mix easily, and only require a few shakes to prepare them. I don't use milk myself, as I find it hard to digest, but there are non-fat powdered milk options that could be added to the protein for those who do. I should also mention that some of my non-protein supplements (like L-Glutamine) I also have in capsule form (i.e. not in a mix) at work. So when I say I purchase multiple quantities, one supplement may be in a powder form, and the second may be the same supplement in a capsule. While I feel the powdered mixes are superior and certainly use them at home, sometimes convenience wins when you're away from your own kitchen. And convenience can often be the difference between keeping to a schedule and not.

1.) How do you remember to fit in all of your supplements?
-It's as easy as this:

PLAN: set a time and amount for each supplement, create a supplement routine/protocol
PREPARE: all my pill form supplements are placed in a vitamin case the night before as for food and powders, Tupperware and shakers are a big convenience to my daily routine.
EXECUTE: this is the final and most rewarding step (self-explanatory , consume the supplement)

How do you bring your protein shakes with you to work/school?

-Bodybuilding is a lifestyle that is a enjoyable and rewarding it should not be looked at as a hassle. With a set routine my life is no harder or different then anyone else at school. I usually have powder in a shaker and mix it at a drinking fountain or a BCAA/WPI cocktail pre-made in a half-gallon container.

2.) Do you break out your daily or weekly supplements into containers to make it easier? What do you use?
I set all my pills out the night before in a case that is able to hold about 12 medium/big pills and fit easily into my pocket. I find it much easier doing things the night before so I am not rushed and remember everything needed for the next day.

3.) Do you write out a daily checklist?
Yes, the first few days of a new routine, a checklist is made to ensure I take all my supplements at the directed time. After a few days I have usually mastered the created routine and it becomes easier and easier to remember when to take my supplements.

4.) How do you mix your protein shakes at work/school?
I will switch it up a bit. Often I will throw a scoop of PrimaForce WPI and 6 scoops of Xtend in a half-full water gallon, I leave it in my locker and sip on it in between classes and often finish it before lunch. The reason for half a gallon is I like being able to finish and dispose of the gallon by noon. Another approach is to put a scoop or two of protein in a shaker and fill it up in between classes at the drinking fountain, shake it and down it. The positive is it‘s nice and cold but the negative is you have a couple smelly shakers by the end of the day.

1.) How do you remember to fit in all of your supplements?
You take your creatine before and after the gym, you take three multivitamin capsules per day (morning, noon, night), you take four ZMA capsules at night and you take two protein shakes per day.

I have a container I carry with me at all times. This container has all the 3 multi vitamins, and the 4 ZMa's. The two shakes I take pre and post workout. I take them both to gym pre mixed and consume them both.

How do you remember to fit in all of your supplements? How do you bring your protein shakes with you to work/school?

I have a container which I carry with me at all times. I put on the container a peice of paper with a list of all the supplements I take and when to take them. I wake up in the morning and than carry around the container in my pocket during the entire day. If I am going to work or school, I have the shakes in my bag or in the car.

Do you break out your daily or weekly supplements into containers to make it easier? What do you use?

I have a Vitamin Shoppe container that I bought. It has small compartments for all your pills. I also put a little peice of paper on it for instructions.

Do you write out a daily checklist?

I have a checklist that is taped on the container.

How do you mix your protein shakes at work/school?

I have my shakes pre made. However, I bring the container with the powder inside sometimes. Than I just put in water and shake it repeatedly until it is completely mixed.

I hoped you enjoyed it

Here is my somewhat hurried entry for the week. Kind of fun though.

The timing of supplements is almost as important as choosing the proper supplement regimen. Missing a dose of many supplements can jeopardize their effectiveness. Between money spent on nutritional supplementation, and time spent working out, it is important to get the best results possible. With the number of nutritional supplements on the market, and the complex stacks that today's bodybuilders are using, it can be very difficult to remember to take every supplement every day, and in a timely manner

How do you remember to fit in all of your supplements? How do you bring your protein shakes with you to work/school?

I definitely need a strategy in order to keep my supplementation on track. Between morning, pre-workout, post-workout, and evening supplements, things can get pretty confusing.

It's not difficult to remember to take my pills upon waking, but it is not fun to open bottle after bottle and line up the pills each and every day. This is why I invested in a large pill organizer-just like the ones used for prescription medication- to help me out. This way I can count out seven days worth of supplements at the beginning of the week. I found a large enough one that has a.m. and p.m. compartments for Monday through Sunday. I can simply pour out my a.m. compartment first thing in the morning, walk to the kitchen, and down my supplements with a glass of water.

If I don't have any obligations before working out, I can mix my pre-workout supplement in a glass of water, and drink it before I head to the gym. I'll mix my post workout shake up simultaneously, and stick it in my gym bag. If I'm drinking a BCAA supplement during my workout, I can mix it in a water bottle at this time and bring it along.

If I have work or class before hitting the gym, I will generally measure out my supplements into small zip-lock bags, and will bring an empty shaker bottle and a water bottle along. I will throw all of this into my gym bag, and mix up my supplements as I need them. If it's going to be a really long day, and I need to bring a homemade meal replacement shake, I will generally throw my ingredients into a blender, dump it into a shaker bottle, and throw it into a refrigerator at my destination. I will re-shake it when I'm ready to drink it.

Do you break out your daily or weekly supplements into containers to make it easier? What do you use?

If I know I will be extremely busy for a few days, I will generally measure out several post-workout shakes into zip-lock bags. This usually consists of 1-2 scoops of whey protein, 2 scoops of a carbohydrate supplement such as maltodextrin, and 3-5 grams of glutamine.

I'd prefer to take a few minutes before leaving for the gym/work/school to measure out my fairly-simple shakes day to day if time allows.

As previously mentioned, I do put any supplements in pill form into my pill organizer at the beginning of the week. These include multivitamins, fish oil, and several herbal supplements that I take, to name a few.

Do you write out a daily checklist?

I do not write out an actual daily checklist. However, I do keep a supplement log I update several times a week. This way I can track if I'm adding or removing any supplements from my regimen, and it also acts as a reminder for me to stay on track.

After years of working out and experimenting with different supplements, I could never remember everything I have tried without referring to my supplement logs.
This helps me track the effects of the supplements as well, as I also keep a workout log with weight, exercises, and reps performed. I also track my body weight. The more information I record, the more beneficial it will be to me down the road.

How do you mix your protein shakes at work/school?

As previously mentioned, I will generally throw my ingredients into zip-lock bags, and store them in my gym bag in the car. I will mix them in a shaker bottle when I can get to a sink or drinking fountain. I highly recommend purchasing several shaker bottles, as they are cheap and very convenient. I think I own four, as I'm a little slow on doing my dishes sometimes.
