Scientists take step toward obesity vaccine Tue Aug 1, 10:54 AM ET
A vaccine that slows down a key hunger hormone kept rats from gaining weight, even when they over ate, U.S. researchers reported on Monday.
The team at The Scripps Research Institute in California cautioned that such a vaccine is a long way from being tested in human volunteers, and that it may not work in people.
But the study shed light on how hunger and weight gain work, they reported in this week's issue of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
The vaccine targeted ghrelin, a hormone discovered in 1999 that helps control appetite in animals and people.
"It appears that active vaccination against ghrelin is one avenue that can slow weight gain and fat build-up in the body," said Kim Janda, a chemistry professor who helped direct the study.
"The study shows our vaccine slows weight gain and decreases stored fat in rats," Janda added.
"While food intake was unchanged in all testing groups, those who were given the most effective vaccines gained the least amount of weight."
The vaccine also appears to help control whether the body stores fat or burns it off, Janda said in a statement.
"To have an impact on appetite and weight gain, ghrelin first has to move from the bloodstream into the brain, where, over long periods, it stimulates the retention of a level of stored energy as fat," Janda said.
"Our study is the first published evidence proving that preventing ghrelin from reaching the central nervous system can produce a desired reduction in weight gain."
Janda hopes the vaccine might help people avoid the weight loss and weight gain seen in "yo-yo" dieting.
"We're not claiming that our study answers the question of obesity treatment once and for all," Janda said.
"What we are saying, and what our study confirms, is that this looks like a serious workable solution to the problem."
The researchers vaccinated mature male rats that were then provided an unlimited amount of low-energy, low-fat food. Unvaccinated rats gained more weight than vaccinated rats fed the same food.
"Whether active immunization against ghrelin would help prevent the development of obesity caused by ... high-fat 'Western' diets, or would facilitate weight loss once obesity is established" remains uncertain, the researchers wrote.

I only say it cause its true. I went to Mcdonalds today for a cheat lunch and no joke every person in there is obese or at least overweight. I then proceded to watch a mom feed her Hyooge kid, he looked like maybe 5 or 6 and already 130lbs, 2 doublecheese and a fry. She then asked him if he wanted anything else....She then got him a fish sandwich.
2 DBCheese + Fry + fish sandwich = probably 1700+ cals with 75% of it coming from sat. fat and simple carbs.

lmao.. an obesity vaccine.
the disease is spreading like wildfire.

Nope, personally I think the fact that an obesity vaccine is even being worked on is disgraceful. These people need a fullblown lifestyle change, not a pill.

vac·cine (vk-sn vksn)
n.
A preparation of a weakened or killed pathogen, such as a bacterium or virus, or of a portion of the pathogen's structure that upon administration stimulates antibody production against the pathogen but is incapable of causing severe infection.
Last time I checked, eating too much to the point where you're obese isn't cause by a virus, therefore the existence of a "vaccine" is impossible. Have some self control when you eat. People are dumb.

That's sad as hell, the kid isn't even smart enough to realize the long term implications. It's the irresponsible mom who needs to question her morals.

Honestly there's news of a new obesity breakthrough every year. Strangely, the new drugs get taken off the market before they can even get broken in.

I think it's all those McDonald's lobbyists personally. Obesity drug = shrunken stomach = less room for big macs

Gastric Bypass is king, for its effects on the nervous system moreso than stomach size.

It should only be available to people who have problems/diseases associated with them being fat/no control over appetite/whatever problems exist.
But not to the fat people who just stuff their faces with food blaming genetics.

roun en y with pancreatic divisions for the win.
From what I have seen im more partial to the gastric sleeve operations for the real obese people. Less of a risk for malabsorption.

I wonder what portion of the obese in this country are actually related to a condition. Like some kind of thyroid issue, in comparison to those that just eat every meal like it's their last.

Too bad the majority of people who get bariatric surgery only lose weight for about 6 months, then balloon back to their previous size. Between patients I have interacted with and people I know in my community, I can count on one hand the people who lost weight and kept it off with a healthier life style after their surgery.

Same here, my former Spanish teacher is the only one I personally know. She weighed 485 lbs prior to, and now weighs in at 350. She lost a good bit of weight and managed to keep it off, but unless they cut out another portion of her stomach looks like she'll stay at this point.

And that's the underlying issue. You're not solving the root problem. Changing your stomach doesn't change your mind.
