Which do you prefer as a carb up and why?

Layne I'd also be curious to see if you have any scientific anecdote on this (pro's and con's)....

Why not use both? Or are you talking about 1 meal?

Yams are about the best carb on the planet!

I tend to eat oats in the morning and yams other meals of the day.

Nice Abs Iceman

I use oatmeal in am preworkout and then a 1/2 a yam with lunch. Cycling carbs 3 on lifting days 1 on nonlifting days and doing 15 minutes HIIT on eliptical on the nonlifting days. Keeping up my weight but dropping bf pretty well.

Started cutting about 6 weeks ago and only dropped 6 lbs but bf drop is almost 8% presently I'm down to 8.9% and my next show is 8 weeks away.

Good luck.

It all depends upon what you mean by "carb up". IF you're talking about carbing up for a contest after a carb depletion cycle then I would tend to use what you've used for carbs throughout your training and contest prep. If it's not broke don't fix it and don't try and add a new food to your diet... you never know how your body will react to it.

If you're just talking just general carbing up then either are okay and it's more of personal choice. For myself I LOVE oatmeal and could eat it six times per day if I could. I can't stand sweet potatoes.

Well the biggest reason I ask is I am about to carb deplete for my next show and I don't want to have any issues with carbing up. For the last few weeks my only source of carbs has been oats, sweet potatoes, and white rice. I've only been eating oats with my breakfast, and it goes down great... but by mid afternoon (after I've consumed two meals with sweet potatoes) I've got indigestion and a little bloat. Some of the bloat is from pounding water, I acknowledge that, but I'm wondering if my stomach just doesn't like sweet potatoes.

I'm always hungry sooner after eating breakfast than I am after eating meals with sweet potatoes, and the indigestion/heartburn doesn't kick in until meal 4 or 5...... so I just might try all oatmeal tomorrow before starting my carb depletion. If I don't experience any problems, I'll definitely try to use oatmeal as my primary source for carbing up.

i would actually pick the one lower in fiber. fiber is great except on contest day as fiber is undigestible & will draw water into the digestive tract which may cause you to be uncomfortable or even bloated, especially since you will be consuming more carbs than on a normal day.

I'd just go with something light on your stomach.

Thanks for the input.
I'd actually rather go with oatmeal, but I won't eat oatmeal dry, and it would be difficult, if not impossible, to constantly cook up when on the go.

Of course I could just cook it up, pack it, and eat it cold....

it's not the water in the oats that would cause the problem, it is the actual undigestible fiber

Ah well I'm sure I'll be fine. I didn't have problems last time and I used both. Shouldn't have problems this time, especially since I'm not carbing up nearly as much or as long.

Sorbet is a good pre-contest carb-up item. No need to sip water, there's enough H2O in it, there's carbs and it's cooling.
