It seems like the face of outdoor recreation has changed, with increases of female-only groups, clinics, and classes that ease females into what was once typically all-male terrority. Women from white-collar corporate america to your typical housewife are signing up and taking on the outdoors in droves.
---------------------------
Fishing
This morning on the Today show, they highlighted a florida-based female only fishing group called Fishin Chix -- they also revealed that about 29% of Floridian women go fishing leaving boyfriends and husbands home with the kids.

Firearms
Sales of firearms purchased by women has steadily increased, spurring some groups such as the Second Amendment Sisters, which offers women's only firearm classes.

Hunting
Hunting has caught on to the trend as well. "Since the NRA began offering women's only hunting trips in 2000, spokeswoman Ashley Varner said, participation has skyrocketed from 500 to 6,000."

Motocross/BMX/Wakeboarding/Surfing
An organization by the name of Girls Learn To Ride (GLTR) provides women and girls aged 6 and older various clinics that teach the basics of how to ride (get your minds out the gutter!) They're not in all 50 states, but they do offer numerous clinics in (almost) every region of the US.

so if your female significant other is having trouble understanding/liking your outdoor rec activity, try getting her involved, she may just discover a new hobby :)

Some of best fishers on Lake Erie are Female. I fished last Sat. with a gal who is on the PWT (pro Walleye Tour).

My wife has little interest in the outdoors. It works well for us, and we each have our own time.

Very good post!

that's ironic! i like the outdoors but a lot of the guys i date don't.
the girly men can't handle the mostiquos or the heat HA HA.

but the organization - GLTR is a godsend. i've been wanting to take on mountain biking and rock climbing (they don't offer it...yet) for a while now.

ladymystique80, if you want to take up mountian biking go to your local bike shop and get a mountian bike and start riding. There are plenty of trails close to Atl. I dont know were you live at but there are alot of trails here in town. And alot of great people at the trails.

My GF (Soon to be fiance.) Loves to be in the outdoors... She just doesnt' want to do anything in the outdoors other than an occasional hike and some book reading... Ironically though she also loves scavanging the forest for deadfall for the fire pile!

She's gone out fishing with me... But it's not her thing... Sometimes I've enjoyed taking her fishing with me... Other times it seems like she's just on the boat doing nothing, yet taking up all my attention...

So I'm still working out a happy medium for all of this...

On the one hand, if she's free to go with me, I can always go on a trip... On the other hand... It's nice to have time away from her, and then come home, as we tend to appreciate each other more.

My wife loves the outdoors. She's the reason I own so many class 3 goodies, lol! I get the "It's my BAR, It's my Tommygun". all the time. Seems to me that I paid for them, I never get to shoot them anymore! I do get to hand her a new magazine though, lol!!

LM, there are a lot of women here in Maryland that ride in our group. I usually ride the mountain bike and stay behind the women just in case there's an issue. Check you local bike shop, they have a lot of info and they sometimes organize rides on trails.

I couldn't get M into rock climbing, she doesn't care for hieghts. I, on the other hand, am an adrenalin junkie always looking for another fix! :D
