okay let me first preface this by saying i know its a retarded question.

when i was little my uncle took me fishing a lot. we did both freshwater and deep sea fishing. well since we both have been busy and his garage burned down (he had over 30 different setups), we haven't been able to go fishing in maybe 5 or 6 years. well i graduate on thursday (6/22) and will have a lot of time on my hands this summer (normally had football) for the first time in about 5 years.

ive decided to do some deep sea fishing before i move up to tahoe (i live about 30 mins - an hour from the beach right now) which is a good 4 or 5 hours to the beach. i have a rod and reel that i took when we went freshwater, and he brought the poles when we went deep sea. i'm not sure if my rod or reel can handle this. where can i find the pound test of each? what poundage would i want for fishing pacific sand/calico bass, barracuda, macrel, sculpin, halibut, tree fish, etc.?

I wouldn't bring a knife to a gun fight. Get a rod suited for saltwater fishing. Fresh water gear isn't as strong or as corrosion resistant. I have a few Shimano bait runners and love them. Great all around reel. I use them for grouper, snapper, dolphin, barracuda, etc, etc. Don't know what rod they're on, but a local shop will help you with that. PM me if you have any questions.
