on the 15. August I'm entering the army for NS (national service)....

I'm getting a personal weapon, a AG-3/HK-79

American Soldiers who are issued an M16 rifle with underbarrel grenade launchers are given the M203. It has a barrel that slides forward for the insertion of the round. The HK79 is the German counterpart to the M203, and mounts on the G3, HK33 and the now defunct G41 rifle. When the HK79 was added, each of these rifles had the 'TGS' suffix added to their name. It stands for 'Tactical Group System.'

The HK79 is a finely made grenade launcher, but you would expect that from HK. The only real downsides to what is a lack of popularity of them, at least on this side of the ocean, is weight and price. A G3 rifle, already heavy in its own right, is fit only for Arnold Schwarzenegger at more than nine pounds, empty! Add the HK79, some full 20 round .308 magazines, and you can see that the average soldier would wear out quickly.

The HK79 is expensive, at more than $1400 U.S. There are not many in inventory in American police departments, even for the few that use 40mm over the more ubiquitous 37mm.

I like my G3. It is a bit heavy but it would kick more if it were lighter so it's a good tradeoff. I don't have a grenade launcher :(.

I'm not sure if I'll get a launcher either... maybe after a while, I'm not sure... But I damn sure hope so :D

I asked if I could get a M-60 but they didnt have one :( ... Not that they would give me one if they had hehe.. I would meet up on the shooting range with a red hair band, full cammo face paint and a t-shirt saying "Team Rambo" :D

you lucky mofo. when we do our NS we don't get to keep the rifles. We use the Rk 62 (and rk 95) here in finland. Even if we wanted to buy one after our service the automatic firing would have to be deactivated :(

Rk 62 (Finnish: Rynnäkkökivääri 62 or M 62, Assault rifle 62) is a assault rifle manufactured by Valmet and Sako. It is used by the Finnish Defence Forces. This reliable infantry weapon was designed in 1962 and is based on the Soviet AK-47 design. The Rk 62 uses 7.62x39 mm ammunition. Between 1965 and 1995 200,000 M62 rifles were produced by Valmet and Sako.

Versions

The first version called the Rk 60 was produced in 1960 and was internally almost a copy of the AK-47. It featured a metallic buttstock, a plastic handguard and pistol grip. After testing by the military, it was slightly modified and adopted as the Rk 62. The Rk 62 is considered a very high quality AK-47 clone. This is apparent especially in its accuracy, as it can frequently achieve less than one minute of arc. The rifle uses a "peep" diopter sight, which is flipped over to reveal the open tritium enhanced rear night sight. The forward sight has also a mode for night operation.

Variants

Different versions of the weapon include the Rk 76, which is a version with a stamped steel receiver that reduces the weight to 3.5 kg. The latest version is called Rk 95 TP, which is able to fire rifle grenades, can be fitted with a suppressor, scope and has a folding stock, among other improvements. It is currently used by the Finnish Defence Forces in small numbers. As Sako had bought Valmet's small arms manufacturing division, the Rk 95 was manufactured only by Sako.

are you just doing the common infantry?

I was thinking about signing up for the Military Police, it's a tiny bit longer I think (6 months is shortest time, then there's options for 9 and 12 months). Get to do some cool stuff there, less walking through forests, more guarding random places. But meh, i'd prefer to stand than walk :D

No, I'm going into the engeneering-batallion. Dunno why I was put there, but I guess it will be ok.. Driving big machines, blowing **** up and finding mines. Its not to far from the Finish border, and I think they arrange snowmobiel trips over the boarder during the winter, so I might come to visit ;)

I dont get to keep the gun after the service is over though :( Have to hand it back in.... But I will have it for about 11 months :)

I might get a MP-5 after a while instead of the AG-3... there is some variation in what weapon you get!

I prefered the G3 to the G36 when i was a conscript. The 7.62 caliber is just better than the 5.56 .
It's a nice rifle.

Round for round it's definately better, but there are advantages to both.

In areas likely to contain cinderblocks and whatnot for structure, 7.62x51 is definately better. It's just a better penetrator. It's also a better long-range round.

In urban fighting though, house to house, I'd rather have 5.56. Less recoil for CQB, lighter ammo (you can run faster, or carry more ammo, whichever you prefer), and you can fire it to greater effect out of a much smaller platform.

These M1A Socoms with the 16" barrels are the most ill-conceived monstrosities on the face of the earth today. 7.62x51 out of 16" of barrel will yield 7.62x39 velocities with FAR more recoil.

It's the same argument that gave birth to .45 GAP: out of a short barrel (<4"), .45 GAP performs the same as .45 ACP because the extra powder just doesn't get to exert its effect.

Nice man. As for caliber carry about 500 rounds of 7.62 then about 500 rounds of 5.56 :D.

But seriously that is a nice weapon, I personally like 7.62 also. .223 seems a bit small for me as I was raised shooting rounds that put fist sized holes in flesh . When I first shot a .223 I was like " WTF we going rabbit hunting?" :p.

Also if someone chooses to hide behind something when you start shooting at them ( its a natural instinct) the 7.62 will have a much better chance of ruining his day.

You prolly dont get to shoot much guns right? So have fun while you in the militery
