While discussing height on another thread, we thought it would be helpful to start one for tall ladies only.
Us newbies have a few questions about being tall and body building.
1) Do you think you have a easier time at competitions or do you think you are at a disadvantage.

I'm not overly tall (just under 5"7) but I have found that having very long legs (mine are much longer than most women!) makes certain exercises difficult. Long legs are much harder to squat and deadlift with which means you have to work just that little bit harder!

bump. i'm 5'9 and squats hate me :(
oh, and if you're tall muscle gains look less like so; small women tend to look bulkier.

HOT DAMN-- was beginning to think there was NO other 6 foot tall woman out there- it is TOUGH TOUGH TOUGH for us to put on size and thickness and get a "roundness" to our muscle "bellys" But wowee- when we finally do? To be able to pull off 6 feet tall- built and still keeping a feminine style-- nothing can beat it!! YAY for TALL girls!

when i read the thread title: i thought,"mmm.. so we'll now discriminate based on height?" ;)
i have to agree with evryone, squats are almost fruitless.. they seem to go to my butt muscles, rather than my legs
but that's not "bad' altogether :D

Hi, I'm 6' tall too but didn't respond because I don't compete and don't know enough in that area to have educated thoughts on it :p.
I totally agree with deeyala....I can do squats just fine but they definitely hit my butt rather than my quads. If, for some chance, I do smith squats, holy quads! I hardly get a butt workout! Anyway I'm sure there are more of "us" out there ;).

I like my regular squats though - they are the first thing that FINALLY got some roundness to my ass- at 40 I finally have a booty... gotta love squats..

AH-HA! other tall girls that lift weights! I knew you guys were out there SOMEWHERE! :þ
I'm 5'8'' and is it JUST ME... or does anyone else have trouble gaining lean muscle mass?!?
My particular body type just, arg. It can be terribly frustrating. It's been a continuous battle to figure out what exercises work, how much to eat, supplements, how much cardio is enough/too much... etc... it's almost like running in circles sometimes.
Yes, legs are a tough part. Unfortunately running tends to be the secret, but at the same time, it also tends to chip away at the little hard-earned mass I have gained! Hmm, what's a girl to do? Elliptical and outdoor walking have been my cardio of choice lately.
Lunges are working well for me and I think the squats are finally helping me to develope more of a sweep... we'll see. One day at a time!

I really like one legged lunges on the Smith with my back leg hiked up and resting on a bench-- you have to stretch that front leg a bit more and make sure your square but WOWEE- it Burnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnssssss your glutes and thighs. I usually do about 5 sets of these then 5 sets of regular lunges on lunge day-- really do wonders...

I'm 5'9.5" and not a small girl (156 lb. comp/185lb. off). My legs are actually my best feature b/c they're shapely and they lean out before my upper body, which is the opposite from most people. But I largely attribute them to pre-comp cardio--2 hours/day running, spinning, stairmaster, stadium stairs, sprinting, walking uphill or my favorite--skipping (uphill):) And lunges...lots of freakin' lunges:( I, too, suck at squats, and that frustrates the hell outta me! But I like being tall anyway. I think it helped me place in my first comp, but worked against me in the second--you never know what the judges are looking for and it depends who else is up there. I wore 5" heels any damn way! I think they're hot.

So true BlondeAmazon; Same thing even for guys. For instance someone like Lee preist may have filled out in 5 years and with only 5 years training could hav ebeen a top amatuer competing in the nationals..not take even a guy who is just 6' tall...its gonna take a while for him to fill out enough muscle wise to be competitive...but then again one he does...a big tall man will most always beat a big shorter man/woman.
For example Ciry everson .Leenda Murray, Anja Langer all were sucessful while women who are jacked up but shorter like Denise Masino have had a longer harder road.
Take Arnold, Lee Haney, Yates, Coleman, all guys 5'10 or taller..then look at poor richie Gaspari, Lee Labrada, Shawn Ray...and the most neglected guy as I beleive carries more lean mass for his height than any Mr O compeiotor even Lee Priest never won the O cause they were shorter . crux of the matter..shorter is better in Novice...later amatuer and pro levels taller is better.

Yes- I am giving myself another year almost to get ready to enter a competition being as tall as I am. I need to show around 195 or so. I am at 195 now and no wheres near ready. I am curriently trying to cut body fat down to around 12% or so and maintain that while THEN building back muscle and size. Will take some time I realise- but I am patient.

Hello tall ladies, I am tall too........I have a question when you refer to being bad at squats what in particular do you mean? I personally love them (esp split squats) but lo, i have skinny looking legs too! when i see a front on pic of myself they just look like straight poles - but when i look down on them they look shapely (durnit).........but when w/o and seeing them pumped is motivating too...just wish they'd stay pumped! lol
i am not a competitor either........i just wish i'd see results somewhere below the belt, i've been working out for about 2 years.........tape measure doesn't budge weight stays in the 140s faithfully..........it's very exerting to think about it so much - my main goal is to firm up my butt........
perhaps my overall routine could be tweaked....

BUMP!!! I know this thread is old but we still don't have much conversation for tall girls. One thing I have noticed since I stopped lifting for a year and a half is even though I have gained weight and am out of shape, people still see me as thin. I am not by any stretch of the imagination. So now I am looking forward to watching my shape change again. I did have nice legs but was more of a bikini look and not quite figure size.

Hello ladies! I'm new to this site and fairly new to lifting-- however, from my little experience, I can relate! I'm a smidge over 6' 0" ( 6'0.5" if you will) and squats & lunges are a nightmare. I think a lot has to do with the idea that we have to "travel" further down -- then again, I may just be talking crazy talk. I will say that lunges burn me more than squats, though-- hands down.

Hey gals. I'm 6' tall and find that I have the opposite problem of most of you. lol! although my legs are half my height, they're the easiest to bulk up by far. This probably has to do with genetics as well because I tend to be "bottom heavy".
I do cardio 4 days a week that all focuses a lot on my lower body. Two days I do HIIT cardio for 15 minutes and the other Two days consist of 20 minutes on the eliptical (very high resistance) and 20 minutes on the stationary bike (also high resistance). I do lower body workouts twice a week (on my non-HIIT days). I find that squats and lunges are way more effective if I use weights. I usually hold a 35 lb kettle bell while doing them. It BURNS big time but the results come quickly. The #1 way I keep my legs bulked up is with the bike. Sounds odd but if you use really high resistance, your quads and hams are stuck flexed for like an hour after you cool down. lol!
This is just what has worked for me. I whole heartedly believe that it's mostly just genetics tho. I have a girlfriend who is an inch taller than me and she can't gain muscle doing the same exact workout I do. Hit me up if you want to know more specifics. :)

It took me forever to be able to get strong enough to do squats. I still can't do much weight but I am glad I persevered.
My legs have definitely grown muscle-wise over the past few years. You just have to be consistent and work hard and it comes eventually.
I am finally down with the fact I will never look like the round short girls. Serena and Venus look good and are tall though - they don't have that skinny look of that Kristia Knowles did and Alicia Marie.

I'm just under 5'10" and ALL legs. My upper body puts on mass OK...but my legs/glutes are more long and lean. Trying really hard to build up my glutes this winter...plyo, lunges and more lunges..
I have always done squats (front and back) and I guess since Im my only frame of reference I can't say that they are harder for me than for other women who are shorter. I guess I sometimes think I could lift heavier if I didn't have to travel so far down, lol..

Well I just signed up to this site and so happy to find my Amazons!! I have been a volleyball player all my life so I tend to be thin. I lift about 6 days a week but cannot seem to bulk up. It is nice to know I am not the only one facing the squating challenge!
Keep this thread going! We need to stick together!
