I just walked out of my summer cottage on Lake Erie, in Ontario right across from Buffalo NY. Anyways when I walked out this bird started squawking at me, then with no warning this little thing starts dive bombing me, I absolutely couldn’t believe it so I jogged back inside. I tried again to get to my car a few minutes later and the bird did the same thing, the only way I can get away is if I sprint. Well I've figured out that there must be a baby or hurt bird somewhere and this bird thinks I’m trying to hurt it. I managed to sprint pass the bird and jog up to a corner store, when I returned I didn’t see the bird and started going into my garage, then again this thing dive bombs me and this time he cut my shoulder. I think this whole thing is hysterical, but I would like to know what kind of bird it is. I see them around quite a bit so Im counting on one of you guys actually knowing, I don’t know anything about birds so it might be a really common one and you guys can make fun of me. Anyways this is the description and I have had no luck so far on the internet-

Region- Ontario, Western NY, Great Lakes
Color- All Black, with Red Wings
Size- Roughly the size of a Robin but not as fat

Thanks guys

redwinged black bird?

Red-winged Blackbirds are fierce defenders of their nests, harassing hawks, crows, and other large birds that pass over and escorting human intruders through their territories, hovering close and making angry calls.

Update-

Alright, the little bastard is getting more aggressive. I’ve spent the last half an hour having a full out battle with him and a super soaker. Now instead of fluttering a few feet above my head he flies up really high and just completely dive bombs me. He's becoming too dangerous. At first I thought he was protecting another bird, but as soon as I step out of my house he comes from 500 feet away and starts attacking. I’m starting to think he views my property as his territory??? Does anyone have any experience with this kind of bird? It was fun at first, but now when I retreat to get more water her dive bombs my back. One of my friends tried to walk up to the house and he attacked her too.

I really don’t want to hurt the little guy, so I’m going to give him until tomorrow. I’m thinking Ill just walk out there will a fishing net and hide it, then when he dive bombs me ill grab him in the net and drive far away and release him. The funny thing he actually appears to be smart, after I started shooting him with the water he stopped his fluttering attacks and just went into full out dives.

Im thinking about video tapping an attack for you guys but I need someone else to cover me with a super soaker.

You really should just leave him alone he will get tired of being macho in a few days and leave everyone alone.
Bottom line he is just doing what you would be doing if you had kids in the neighborhood and some lumbering muscleheaded buffoon wondered into the area.
Chill out and have fun.

I give up do what you have to do but there is no need to tell what your final decision was.

So as far as I am concerned this thread is closed.

hahha man this is ****ig halrious....Although very unusual..I really wouldnt mess with this bird, it has to have some disease, rabies, somethin becouse that behavior is far from normal

Blue Jays are really the only bird I know of that would be so damn agressive

Like Chip said, ol Mr. Red rider may see a little action soon

There were a lot of red-winged blackbirds where I grew up, hundreds. I never saw one attack anyone, but I did see them gang up on some larger birds a few times.

Maybe if you wore a cowboy hat or sombrero it would confuse him. Anyway, like chipman said, I'd give him a couple days. Then if he keeps it up, there's always bb guns.

Take a tennis raquett and smack him. Not hard enough to really hurt him bad - just smack him a little. Maybe he will decide you are the alpha bird.

The fishing net idea would be great except that he probably has young in the area - this is the right time of year - and you will orphan them.

Now that I have made you feel bad about his babies - you could also just bb gun him :D

Just for giggles put a mirror out there and see if he will wear himself out fighting it.

Update-

The Garbage men just came and he attacked them too, they left the garbage and jumped in the truck.

I know I could bb him, but I really don’t want to hurt it. I was hoping that maybe a baby fell out of the nest but I guess this guy thinks my property is his territory. I am going to give it a few more days and then I'll have to figure something out because nobody can get into my house. I don’t think a Mirror would work but I'll try it, he doesn’t even seem to be interested in other birds, just humans.

Im going to go mow the lawn and hopefully the noise will scare it away, if it doesnt Im going to get dive bombed right in the back.
