It's time I began a new journal. The other one was active for almost a year, and with nearly 1,200 posts and 17,000 views it was getting 'long in the tooth'. Many of the posters are no longer with us, some regrettably so and others thankfully gone. And so with the unbridled joy of springtime in the air I say "Out with the old...."

I'm pleased with my workouts and nutrition. The good news is I've been eating very clean for the past 2 weeks and my weekly weigh-ins and blood pressure are improving. As you can see, I've lost 1 lb./week, and the BP has nosedived. Here's my most recent progress:

5/28 203 lbs., BP 115/77
5/21 204 lbs., BP 130/77
5/15 205 lbs., BP 136/88

The bad news? There isn't any!

I hope you join me on my journey to bigger and better things. Hop in. Ready?...

What a morning! A nearby homeowner is having a new driveway put in today & the jackhammer sounds like it's working really hard. They must be trying to finish the job in 1 day because I've never seen a crew that didn't take a break. Anyway this will be short & sweet, then I'm going away somewhere to hide for the day. At the gym yesterday:

Machine chest press 3 sets @ 9 reps.
Machine arm curls 10, 10, 9 reps; added one to each set.
Machine arm extensions 3 sets of 10, ditto.
Kneeling on a bench DB rows 3 @ 12, added 2 reps to last 2 sets.
DB shrugs 3 @ 12, added 2 reps to each set.
Pulldowns 2 @ 12, 1 @ 9, added a rep to last set.
Machine Pec dec then rear delts 3 @ 12 each.
Ab crunches then hyperextensions 2 @ 12 each, picturing images of gsc.

Overall I'm continuing to make progress with this split. Headed to the gym now to see which cardio machine is available. Have a great wednesday everyone.

Oh no, now you've given jag & the others an idea. YIKES.

I've gotta tell you about this really good dinner (my wife's words) that I made tonight.

Started with romaine salad with minced red onion, sliced egg whites, and black olives dressed with unflavored rice wine vinegar and topped with pine nuts. Broiled wild Alaskan Copper River sockeye salmon fillets drizzled with freshly squeezed lime juice. Steamed wild rice served as a bed under black mushrooms sauteed in a bit of sesame oil, & topped with chopped pimento & tiny strips of fresh mint leaves. (The 3 plants we put in by the stream last year survived well.) Finished with very ripe pears dusted with nutmeg. I served all of this on plates that she made a couple of years ago of clay she threw, simple oriental-type designs she drew on them, & then fired. No booze, of course, on this diet.

Hiya mega meg, bikin' barb, & 'rita mom; yep, that dinner was one of my better efforts, & as a reward I didn't have to do the dishes. hehe.

OK, on to my WO. After a warmup on the Concept II rower:

Squats 3 sets of 12; still struggling with the last few reps so I'll stay here until I can handle it better.
Machine leg curls 2 @ 12, added a 3rd set & only did 8.
Machine leg extensions 2 @ 12, ditto.
Machine pec fly then rear deltoids 3 @ 11, added a rep.
Crunches then hyperextensions 3 @ 12, added a set to each & was able to get 12 but the moaning was unearthly.
This extra set better be worth it, GSC. (I hate trying to keep up with this guy).

Spent about 10 mins afterward stretching/bouncing on the stability ball since I didn't have time for the hot pool. Have a wonderful friday night everyone.

Hib, I remember about a yr ago you told me how you bake marinated chicken breasts & that's my fav way to do them now.

Hi nuc, gun, flynn, & jt1; sometimes I think of what you guys are doing before I start lifting as a way to get psyched up.

Yeah feather we took 3 little plants & put them about 150' away from us, just beyond where the grass ends & the weeds begin. If the seeds blow into your ponds maybe you'll have mint flavored tilapia!

Jag, that looks like a couple of the vampire women vice-president- wannabees that I've worked with.

Bikin' barb & JP, hope you're having a sunny sunday too.

Hey hunter ya lurker. When you get that record buck send me some venison, hehe.

Time to step back & look at this week's progress:

6/4 202 lbs., BP 123/82
5/28 203 lbs., BP 115/77
5/21 204 lbs., BP 130/77
5/15 205 lbs., BP 136/88

So I lost another pound & the BP is in a normal fluctuation. I'm pleased. WO's are going well but I skipped a couple of days of cardio because of the press of other duties at the end of the kids' school year. Diet is clean, almost no empty calories and no alcohol. As an aside, I'm reading a couple of books by Richard Feynman telling funny stories about his life experiences as a physicist. A true scientist that man was. Hope all of you have as enjoyable a sunday as I plan to.

Did some cardio at the gym today - 35 mins on the recumbent bike, ending HR 125. I could tell I haven't been there in a few days, breathing heavier than usual. Afterward went for a bar-b-que at the grandkids to celebrate the end of the school year. They took turns being cranky. Food was good; kebabs with 2 cubes of lean steak, onions & peppers, huge baked potato that I split with my wife, champagne which the kids hated & I had 1 glass of, then pics/movies of the kids during the school year. A good night for us. Sweet dreams to all of you.

Nicely done, sir! A little bit of everything in there, I see! When I was a kid, I remember the "cool" thing to do at places where you were allowed to get your own soda out of machines at restaurants was to put a little bit of every single flavor in there. You're getting out of the back seat of a 2007 Rolls Royce Silver Shadow white convertible and being escorted through the front door of the Frank Lloyd Wright designed home to the veranda. Peacocks open their feathers for you. An elegantly dressed man in a tuxedo asks if you'd like a drink, mint julep perhaps. You simply nod yes, and sit next to the gentleman known to the populace as "Dapper Joe", or to the kids as "Joe Cool". Cardio at the gym today was 35 mins on the recumbent bike, ending HR 118. A steady ride for the most part, only pushing it during the last 15 mins. Just came back from a very casual birthday party; our grandson has been learning magic for the past year & our present to him was to spend some $$$ on an internet site he likes, so he bought some things he's been wanting. As we were leaving the family was going down to DQ for an ice cream cake, but I didn't even have the craving for a bite. Tomorrow is weigh-in. Enjoy your saturday night.

Weigh-in today:

6/11 203 lbs., BP 125/79
6/4 202 lbs., BP 123/82
5/28 203 lbs., BP 115/77
5/21 204 lbs., BP 130/77
5/15 205 lbs., BP 136/88

Looks like an advancing battlefront in the face of a counterattack, doesn't it? Two steps forward, one step back to consolidate the gains. My pants waistline feels looser except for some bloat occasionally after meals. I'm gonna keep track of when this happens, thinking maybe I have a slight food allergy or somethings are harder to digest than others. I made some sun iced tea yesterday with Japanese green tea & man was that soothing to my stomach. Made another gallon this AM & put some fresh mint in this time. My wife went to the gym already & I told her I'd meet her there so I'd better get going. Enjoy your sunday everyone.

I made a good dinner. Carmelized a few Vidalia onions for a couple of hours this afternoon then went to the supermarket for beef consomme; we like the stronger taste in onion soup compared to beef broth. Wandering thru there I spot some fresh Copper River red sockeye at the fish counter. A new oriental woman is there with her hairnet on giving me a "Come hither, GI" look. Turns out she's a great fishmonger, really knows what she's talking about. Gives me a filet on some waxed paper to examine - deep ruby color & no scent, firmer than the flesh on my arms. This fish only comes once a year & usually costs ~$20/lb., but she's just had a big order come in & it's $9.99. I tell her to wrap up all that she has on ice in the cooler, and, you know how they are, she gives me a 'becoming' smile and nods. (joed takes a deep breath) I do love women!

At home I toss some wild rice in the cooker, add the consomme to the onions, & start cooking artichokes. 45 minutes later, voila, as hib would say.
French onion soup with a slice of jarlsberg atop the crunchy french bread, an artichoke, then broiled salmon on a bed of wild rice. I had mine plain, my wife used some lemon juice & fresh dill weed on her fish. I told her the story about the fish lady & we had a good laugh.

Hi barb, I put crusty bread & cheese in mine too. I've always thought that 'clean' is in the eye of the beholder; guess I can call it a cheat meal.
I'm off to take my morning walk before it gets too hot, then later at the gym probably do legs. Still feeling some doms after my arms/shoulders wo the other day. I did a set of incline bb presses that I didn't record & I think it's from them. Haven't been doing any overhead work at the suggestion of my PT because of the rotators, & I was curious about how the inclines would feel; nothing in my shoulders or chest to speak of, but lower biceps & upper forearms are the tender spots. Maybe it's weird or maybe not, I DK.

Leg Curls 2 @ 12, 1 @ 9, added an extra rep on the last set.
Leg Extensions 2 @ 12, 1 @ 9, ditto, & breathing like a steam engine.
Pec Fly then Rear Deltoid machine 3 @ 12, added a rep to all 3 sets. Rotators feel really strong.
Crunches then Hyperextensions on the Roman Chair 3 @ 13, added a rep to all 3 sets of each exercise. Felt like my eyes were popping out of my head, but somehow I've gotta keep up with that gsc fella.

My wife showed up halfway thru my work & started hers, & we wanted to go to the hot therapy pool afterward, so, with my legs/lower back starting to tighten-up I decided to walk on the treadmill. That loosened 'em up & I felt good so I put in 30 mins at a good pace, but the ending HR was only 98. Off to the pool, we dunked ourselves for about half an hour of oozing. At home I made a huge protein drink with ground flaxseeds/oats added. And that was my tuesday. How's yours going???

Someday, that's funny about Nock. He was probably scratching his head wondering how you knew that. I think he has the credentials to give you a few tips on using the rower. Might be a good change of pace for you.

Jenn, hope you catch one of those 3-foot long bass I've been hearing about.

At the gym today aerobics on the treadmill was 40 mins, ending HR 102.

Funny story, at least I thought it was funny, about the grandkids & father's day. Today, they're busy making cards, the oldest girl made a foam pillow covered with the logo from her dad's company, & the youngest boy is busy perfecting some new card tricks for the magic show he's going to give. Their dad is a burly guy, drives a pickup with a metal toolbox in the back, the whole nine yards. So during a lull when the kids were busy with all the preparations I had a wild thought: I said to them, "I've got a great idea about what to get your dad." Knowing me, they were somewhat casual but asked what it was. I said "Get a bumper sticker for his truck that says 'CAUTION: I brake for garage sales'." I guess they weren't expecting that because they stopped for a minute, tilted their heads as if giving it serious thought, then laughed and said it was a stupid idea. I laughed with them. Hope you have a funny saturday folks.

Yesterday at the gym after a warmup on the Concept II rower:

Machine arm curls 11,11,10; added a rep to the first 2 sets.
Machine arm extensions 3 sets of 11 reps; added a rep to all 3.
DB kneeling rows 3 @ 13; was going to up the weight/lower the reps but
still not too comfortable with these so I added a rep to all 3 sets instead.
DB shrugs 3 @ 13.
T-bar pulldowns 2 @ 11, added a rep to each set.
Machine chest press 3 @ 10.
Pec dec then Rear delts 3 @ 12.
Ab crunches then hyperextensions on roman chair 1 @ 15 each.

Thought I might stop here but at my weigh-in I didn't lose an ounce last week so I rode the recumbent bike for 30 mins, ending HR 123. I was walking slow at the end of that.

For the record I still weigh 203, BP 129/84. I'm scratching my head about the weight loss stalling. I ate clean for the most part but maybe not as much as I should have; avg. daily calories were 2050, with 18% fats, 37% protein, & 45% carbs. I'll have to shove in an extra 200 cals/day this week & see what happens.

I've gotta beat feet outta here now, the cleaning lady is coming in about 15 mins. Have a good monday folks.

Be careful fretting the weight loss too much. It could be caused by a number of things. You may go a couple of weeks and not lose any weight, then all of the sudden you drop 4 pounds. Just keep training hard and eating clean.

Thanks hoos, I'm more wondering than worrying. When my wife & I dieted in the past I was always the one losing ~2 lbs/wk, whereas she'd lose about 1 a month for the first couple months. Now the situation is reversed & she's dropped 6 to my 2. She's telling me now I know what it was like for her, & as she walks away she says "You're going thru the andropause." Really knows how to get even, this redhead I've got.

At the gym today walked on the treadmill for half an hour, ending HR 112. Feeling some DOMS in the shoulders & rotators particularly, from the WO yesterday, but nothing horrible. Have a good night folks.

Aerobics at the gym today was 45 mins on the treadmill, ending HR 108. Afterward I stopped at the store because they were getting more fresh Copper River salmon. Call me a pig, I don't care: I bought all the filets they had on ice in the display case. I can't get enough of this fish this year, it tastes blissful & it melts in your mouth.

I made one for dinner tonight, seared. A huge artichoke started the meal, then a simple spring greens salad with cherry tomatoes, fresh chives & marjoram & bruised sweet basil leaves, with a splash of unflavored rice vinegar. Sauteed a vidalia onion with some forest mushrooms and, using a recipe I read in an old cookbook, flavored them with very dry sherry, minced fresh parsley, & a few shavings of nutmeg. I served the seared sockeye on a bed of black rice with the mushrooms/onions alongside. A very satisfying meal.

Hi meg, I feel better already. hehe. After a wk of ODing on vits & throat sprays & other stuff it seems like whatever it was in my chest/throat has its tail between its legs & is going away with a whimper. That's the first cold I've had in years.

You're right fm, but I had to move the furniture before going to the gym & by that time I was beat. Rode the recumbent bike for 20 mins, ending HR 116, & that was that.

Weigh-in today, scale number was essentially unchanged & same with the BP - 125/73; I've noticed my waist seems, maybe not smaller but less large I guess. Significantly less bloating after meals; looked at my food journal for the past couple of wks & I see some trigger foods that I'm avoiding, & getting good results. Enough babbling. That's one of the things Pam told me to avoid (high fructose corn syrup) -- it is in a lot of processed foods. I have been able to find salsa and marinara sauces without it. :p I'm not sure if that was because of it causing bloating -- just the sugar.

HFCS is some weird crap. It doesn't stimulate insulin production like other carbs, or burn for energy production, so you will store all of it as fat. Plus it also turns off the switch that controls appetite, so it makes you eat way more than you need to be full. But, I don't think it gives lab rats cancer...

you have to watch for that with dimmer switches too. i knew that you have to use a special heavy duty one when controlling a ceiling fan, but i just learned from a friend that if you use those 7 year type bulbs in anything with a dimmer, your house will burn down.

I hate electricity. It scares me.

When I was in college and lived with my parents, I had a hobby ceramic kiln in the basement. My brother, an electrician, installed a separate panel and breaker just for the kiln. After a time the breaker kept tripping and I couldn't wait for him to replace it, so I did.

My father asked when I was going to do it. I said I did already. He said he didn't notice the power going off in the house. I asked why should it. Well, he said, because when I shut the main off...

Shut what main off... ?

He said to me, you changed a 40 amp breaker on a 220 line without shutting off the power? I said uh, yeah? uh oh.. All he could say was things like You are so stupid... the money we spend for college and you... are so stupid... you changed... and didn't.... stupid...

My brother almost tripped a breaker himself when he heard about this. :D

Weigh-in today was essentially the same as last wk except for the loss of a pound according to the scale (haha). Once again my stomach seems not quite so large. So, 202 lbs, BP 125/84. Think I'll start recording this every 2 wks instead of 1, the tiny changes are getting kind of boring. Aerobics today was an hour on the treadmill, ending HR 110. My knees get stiff at about the 30 min mark on this machine, so I paused it & did some deep knee bends & walked around for a minute or so before resuming. I think it's because the surface is always the same distance away for a footplant, despite the incline being changed. When I walk outdoors for an hour my knees don't stiffen up at all, maybe because of the changing terrain. That seems the most obvious reason to me anyway.

Eating some leftovers tonight. Yesterday we made chicken with brown sauce & forest mushrooms, with roasted new red potatoes and rosemary, and young green beans. Sauce was delicious. My wife made a mirepoix base with a piece of thick maple cured bacon, then added beef consomme & cooked it down, then madeira; a classic recipe. Started the meal with tomatoes & fresh basil on a green salad, & ended it with chilled green melon, cantalope, & watermelon balls, straight. Enjoy the rest of your wkend everyone.

(edit: I'm watching a movie & am being reminded of some of Bruce Lee's early film work. Talk about a guy being in good shape! Anyway, does anyone remember how long ago he died? I'm guessing late 80's or early 90's.)

I usually wear Brooks but bought the Saucony because they're both for 'motion control' & I overpronate. Oh well, I guess I'll go shopping this wkend to get a new pair or three of the usuals.

This was a good week for me and I hope it was for all of you. Here's something to end your friday night, or to begin your saturday morning:

Once I understood the language of the flowers,
Once I understood each word the caterpillar said,
Once I smiled in secret at the gossip of the starlings,
And shared a conversation with the housefly in my bed.
Once I heard and answered all the questions of the crickets,
And joined the crying of each falling dying flake of snow,
Once I spoke the language of the flowers....
How did it go?
How did it go?

By the way, I also use Brooks running shoes and love them. I'm not sure I would attempt any other brand, they just fit my fat feet so well. =)

I'd been using the Brooks Addiction 6 with good results, and the new model 7 is coming into the stores now. Supposed to have a little wider toe box & a slightly different inner heel construction for the same price as the 6. I'll try a pair to see what they feel like.

It's been drizzling here on and off last night and today. The moisture smells great. Ahhhhh, the simple life. Have a good saturday folks.

I'd love to build a current pool so I could swim against it. I used to swim from Coquina Beach to Oregon Inletin NC when I was there. People would ask me if I was afraid of sharks, I always told them they'd have to get through my dolphin bodyguards to get at me, lol!! A 7 mile swim 4 times a week was all I needed back then.

Yeah feather, the good old days.
Hi hib, thanks for popping in.
Hey meg, I saw your new thread & was going to post something but before I could that feather fella went streaking thru it; he's a tough act to follow.

Had a good day at the gym, added a rep to each set of exercises except at the end for abs - pressed for time, so I'll do the mea culpa next time I go.
After a warmup on the Concept II rower:

Machine arm curls 3 sets of 12.
Machine arm extensions 3 @ 12.
DB rows, kneeling on bench 3 @ 15.
DB shrugs 3 @ 15.
T-bar pulldowns 2 @ 13.
Abs then hyperextensions on the roman chair 1 @ 15.

Home for a post wo shake with a banana & ground flaxseed added, & that was that. Happy monday folks.

You were right someday, the guy offered to replace them with an updated version of my usual shoes without me even saying anything. Needless to say, he's earned a loyal customer in me.

Stopped at the gym on the way home & finished the crunches/hyperextensions from yesterday, & also rowed the Concept II for awhile. That's it.

You read that right Megs, 30 miles a week is what I swam in the open ocean. I didn't see much point in swimming in a pool when your job says you'll be jumping out of a helicopter in 10-50 foot seas! Only pulled one person from a pool, 89 from the open ocean. My dolphin guides were always there, I'd take them 20 lbs of mullet for their service to me. They knew the days I'd be there and they'd swim into the breakers to link up with me. The only time they disappeared on me was when the cows would calf. They'd head for the shallows of the sounds for that away from the sharks.

If I lived at the beach, I'd probably still be doing it and I wouldn't have become the fat slob that I did!

Today's aerobics was 25 mins on the recumbent bike, ending HR 122. Meanwhile, my wife was pushing the iron around & asked me to check her form because the squat doesn't always feel consistent to her, one WO to another. I couldn't see anything strikingly wrong so we talked about it over dinner & it turns out she doesn't always use the same shoes when she lifts. The one pair she feels 'in the groove' with has a lower/narrower heel than the other pair that feel 'funny'. I think that's probably the difference, but I thought I'd put the question here to see what any of you think: do you always use the same pair of shoes when lifting, & do your favorite shoes have a low heel?

Tomorrow and the wkend my local Whole Foods market is having a "customer appreciation" day; to me, it sounds like a ploy to get more traffic into the store but I'll bite. Samples of tons of different food, lots of sale items, the whole nine yards. Probably go there in the afternoon before the 9-5'ers get off work & hog everything. I've been yearning for some Cornish game hens & they're always fresh there, & I'll see what's new & exciting in the fishmonger's corner. On the way to the cashier I'll probably stop to see what their fruit tarts look like; I may do more than look. At the gym I have legs scheduled, and yes, feather & jag, I wear shoes. Mom, when you're in my thread everything you say is valuable. What other woman except my wife would admit to having her hair curl in the humidity? WELL, maybe Someday or Hibby would, but you're the first to say it publicly. Your award is pictured below. hehe. (BTW, you're quite COOL yourself, even without the Snoopy bike basket).

Today's WO was good, in the sense of being tiring. After a warmup on the Concept II rower:

Squats 2 sets @ 12 reps, 1 @ 11; added a rep to the last set but, phew!
Sitting leg curls 3 @ 12; added a rep to the last set.
Sitting leg extensions 3 @ 12; ditto.

Pec fly then Rear delts machine 3 @ 14; increased the ROM on these a notch on the machine & was feeling it afterward, but I'm at the max ROM now & if the doms are not too bad tomorrow I'll continue them here. As you may recall, these have been an extension of my rotator cuff rehab which I think is more than complete. I feel 100% & have been for several weeks. My plan is to increase the weight next session & drop the reps, as usual, except now I'll be at the maximum ROM.

Finally today, Roman chair situps then hyperextensions 2 @ 15; ran out of gas, pure and simple. I envy that GSC guy so much, being able to crank out 3@15 with no probs. Oh the 6-pack he must have.

Discovered an interesting item yesterday while I was roaming. I've been calling my last exercise Ab crunches. I absent-mindedly thought they were the same as situps when I first started doing them, then I just continued using that phrase because 'that's what everyone says'. Turns out it's not precise; it's really a situp that I'm doing, boring and old fashioned as it may sound. Attached is the reference for it that I found. I have to point out, since we're talking about ROM, that I complete the situp all the way to my knees unlike the slacker in the video.

Jeez, mom24 thought she was rambling, I hope she reads this!

Here's a funny story: someone visited us from back east last summer & we were drinking ice cold beer on the deck in the shade. Hiya mom. (The post title isn't meant for you, it's the title of this story)

I went shopping at Costco today & was in the row where all the different kinds of fresh melons are. So I start at one end & work my way along, tapping & squeezing, & smelling the stem ends. I'm part way down when a 30ish yr. old mom at the other end of the aisle parks her cart with a 2 yr old in it, & she wanders off looking at the melons too. I'm squeezin' & smellin', & about 15' from the cart I notice the kid seems to be studying me, you know how they do sometimes. I smile at him but he continues watching stonefaced while sucking his pacifier. I get a little closer, still searching for something for tonight, look at him & wave my hand. He brightens up then waves back. Mom notices this & edges back toward the cart, still looking at the selection of melons. I turn away for a minute then glance back toward him, but this time I smile & wave at him with my hand closed & just wiggling my index finger. He tries it & can't quite get it going, looks at me again & I close my hand real slow & wave again with my index finger. By this time mom has seen both of us & she walks over to stand next to the kid who is staring at his hand & trying to figure out how to work his finger. In a few seconds he sort of gets it, looks at me then his mom, & beams.

We start some small talk about smart kids & ripe melons, & how can you tell for sure when melons are ready to eat. Turns out she's having a party on saturday night & wants it to be perfect. So I tell her about tapping a watermelon to hear if it's hollow, & squeezing/smelling near the stem of a cantalope & green melon. We find a couple that will be ready in 2 days, & she pushes the cart away with her son who's still fooling around with not just his right hand but his left too. I figure that should keep him occupied for a couple of hours while his mom finishes shopping.

So what's this have to do with the post title?

If you remember the original Odd Couple movie with Matthau & Lemmon, they invited the 'goils' who lived upstairs down for dinner, & Lemmon insisted on shopping for the food & making it instead of going to a restaurant. There's a scene in the grocery story where he wearing his pork pie hat & is squeezing/smelling the melons when a woman walks over to him & asks if the one she has will be ready tonight. He goes thru the whole routine, squeezing & smelling, then renders his verdict: not tonight, tomorrow at the earliest.

So you say, Felix Unger, Felix Unger of course. But do you remember the F.U.?
I'll stop the suspense. At one point in the movie Lemmon goes out of the apartment for awhile & leaves a note for Matthau. Couple of hours later he returns & asks if Matthau saw the note. Matthau says "YEAH I SAW IT. It took me two hours to figure out that F.U. stood for Felix Unger."

(edit) OK, at the gym I was on the treadmill for an hour, ending HR 112. Enjoy your thursday everyone. (edit)

Squats 3 sets of 12 reps; added an extra rep to the last set, snorting & breathing like a raging bull.
Machine leg curls 3 @ 12
Machine leg extensions 3 @ 12
Machine pec fly then rear delts 3 @ 15, added a rep to each set. Probably will add some weight next time & lower the reps to around 8.
Roman Chair situps then hyperextensions 3 @ 15; was able to get all 3 sets today, I think because I adjusted the back brace a notch lower. My wife was right, it had been constricting my breath & when I lowered it to my hip bones my breathing was easier.

Yesterday evening at the gym spent some time on the treadmill but it was too hot in there so I went into the basketball courts which were empty & about 15 degrees cooler; there's a synthetic walking/running track circling above them so I spent the rest of the hour in there, ending HR was around 115 according to my breathing (if you can figure that one out).

Weigh-in today, everything is status quo. Translated that means I didn't lose any weight this wk, BP remains good. Headed to the gym for aerobics shortly, & I'll probably do some crunches & hyperextensions just for fun. Yeah, real fun. Enjoy your sunday everyone, this is the only July 23, 2006 you'll ever have in your whole life.

[edit] Decided not to go to the gym with the roman chair, instead at the other one across the street I rode the recumbent bike for 30 mins, ending HR 114. Had plenty of energy left so I went across the hall to the track above the courts & walked for 45 mins. Felt good to be moving for so long, it's been awhile. A very good aerobics day.

I should probably post this in the brand spanking new "Official Over50 Thread" but it's already on page 2 in the main forum with zero replies. Sometimes I really like being 'the first', but not in this case. Besides that, I don't want to prod kimsquit into starting a brand new thread, regardless of the title. So hold onto yer hats, here we go:

A Medline item states that the current heat wave has contributed to more than 10 deaths. BUT, experts say, if people heed heat advisories, the death toll doesn't have to rise. Unfortunately a new study from Kent State Univ suggests that (ready for this one?) "too many people don't listen to experts' advice." (Are you one of them? Well, are you? ARE YOU?) In this study, funded by guess who, over 900 seniors ages 65-97 were polled and about 50% ignored the current 'heat advisories' in Dayton, Phoenix, Philly, and Toronto. (You read it right. Toronto!) The reason? Many thought "the warnings weren't meant for them, but only for old people, even though they were all over 65."

So, to paraphase the reasoning for the Over50 thread: What's the difference between being 35 and 50? I'd say it's the same difference between being 50 and 65. No, not 15 yrs. It's that we're not old and we don't listen to 'the experts' either.

Yeah gun, I think there were lots of smiling lurkers on that thread. The more typical summer/fall weather is rolling in now jag; still hot during the morning & lunch hour but then the clouds start coming in & for the past few days it's been raining late in the day & cooling off nicely. FM, I think that thread gave everyone a headache.

At the gym today warmed up on the Concept II rower, then had to mix up the exercise sequence a bit because some of the machines were being used;
here's what I did.

DB kneeling rows 3 sets of 15 reps. Ready to raise the weight/lower reps.
DB shrugs 3 @ 15. Ditto.
Machine arm curls 3 @ 12.
Machine arm extensions 3 @ 12.
T-bar pulldowns 2 @ 15.
Machine pec fly then rear delts 3 @ 15 on each. Ready to 'raise/lower'.
Roman chair hyperextensions then situps 3 @ 15, alternated sets of each.

Was going to raise the weight/lower the reps on some of these but I felt a twinge above my elbow below the tricep during the curls so I kept things the same as last time. I may switch to DB or BB bicep curls if this happens again. This session took well over an hour. I experimented with the rest time between sets, raised it about a minute more on some to a full 2 minutes & it helped a lot with the next set. Especially true on the abs & hyperextensions, & rows. Also did about 10 mins of stretching afterward which loosened my lower back, shoulders & neck. And that was that.

Hi neighbor, I missed it this morning but you're right, sunrise in the high country really is spectacular.
Yes gun, the stretching was a relief to my back & neck. I don't always do it but when I do it's always worth it.

45 mins of aerobics today, 1/2 on the track and the other half on the recumbent bike, ending HR 110. Had a big salad for dinner tonight with leftover cold sockeye salmon, romaine, baby spinach, vidalia onion, french beans, black olives, tomato & a fistful of fresh herbs like parsley, sweet basil, & lemon thyme. A splash of balsamic vinaigrette & I'm full for about 500 calories. Enjoy your thursday evening folks.

Hi bikin' barbie, if you're gonna try salmon now's the time, just stay from the canned stuff - major YUCKO imo. Wild Alaskan sockeye is fresh in the stores now & maybe through August. So many great ways to prepare it: if you like it hot (so to speak) you can mix up some cajun herb dressing & coat the fish in it, or try it blackened, eating just a little at a time to get used to the taste. You may work your way up to simply broiling it with some lemon or lime squeezed over top.

Bikin' meg, glad you like it here. I'm planning on having a good s-l-o-w wkend; hope you do too.

Hey mini mom, I'm still not sure what kind of a mini you have in mind. hehe. Are we still counting the days and xing them off the calendar? I only have one thing to say - PICS!

09, how are ya? It's kind of interesting to watch how your heartrate changes during the exercise and how it can get lower as the weeks go on & your body adapts. Enjoy your wkend also.

At the gym today, I decided to raise the weight & lower the reps on everything since I've handled the same weight/reps well in 2 consecutive sessions. So after a warmup on the rower:

Squats 3 sets of 8 reps
Machine Leg curls 3 @ 8
Machine Leg extensions 3 @ 8
Machine Pec fly then Rear delts 3 @ 8 each.
Roman chair hyperextensions then situps, alternating, 3 @ 15 each (same as before).

Afterward, 10 mins on the treadmill then some stretching on the exercise ball.
It went well. I'm feeling a very slight shoulder tenderness from the fly/delts movements but I expect this because I'm getting a full ROM; it's of no concern.

Enjoy your friday evening folks.

A half marathon is 13 miles. Pffftttt, you do that in 2 days chasing the boys on their bikes. No probs. Now, about those pics. You've lost all that weight (and I'm still jealous by the way) and you went shopping for a new bathing suit. Let's see, what else...what else...well I'll just say, speaking for every man on the forum, if you don't post pics you'll be breaking a very long, almost sacred tradition here. I can't imagine how many of us you'll drive to drink. OK, if the guilt trip doesn't work how about this? (It takes a big man to grovel) Pretty Please with a cherry on top?

Back to business. Today was a rest day, complete with a nap. Tomorrow, back to the aerobics salt mine. Looks like tomorrow is ten minutes away. Sweet dreams.

Looks like we're all agreed, 'ritas and naps are both good.

I know you've all had days when you didn't think you'd do much at the gym but when you went & started, things turned out great. Today was my turn. I wanted to up the weight & drop the reps on some exercises, but also thought about moving from a machine to the dumbbells for curls & didn't know quite how to guage the weight to use, being injury-phobic as I am. On top of that I thought I'd try two of Mino's suggestions from another thread about avoiding a sore elbow. Finally, I felt kind of mentally tired & not able to focus real clearly. So that was me walking into the gym. Turned out to be a terrific day.

After stretching on the ball and a warmup on the rower:

Machine chest press - 3 sets of 8 reps, raised the weight on the final set.

DB curls - 2 @ 12, 1 @ 8. Could have gone heavier on the first 2 sets & will next time; per mino (and others), started with a hammer grip then at 90 degrees turned my palm up.

Machine arm extensions - 1 @ 12, 2 @ 8. Raised the weight on the final 2 sets.

DB kneeling rows - 2 @ 15, 1 @ 8. Upped weight on last set
DB shrugs - 2 @ 15, 1 @ 8. Ditto.
Lat pulldowns - 1 @ 12, 2 @ 8. Used the V handle rather than the T-bar, per mino; raised weight on 2nd set then added a 3rd set with more weight.

Machine pec fly then rear delts - 3 @ 9, added a rep to each set.
Roman chair hyperextensions then situps, alternating - 3 @ 15. No change. These things get me huffin' like there's no tomorrow, but I can feel my lower back getting stronger each session.

I was pleased with the work today & have a mix of emotions. I feel strong & am happy I've taken things slowly. I'm very confident that my tendons/ligaments are ready to handle increasingly heavier weights. I can just FEEL it; well, you know what I mean.

Sleep well everyone. I'm off to check your journals to see what happened to YOU today.

Aerobics at the gym today was an hour, half on the track and half on the treadmill. I'm going back to the bike & spending more time on the Concept II rower for awhile. My knee has been aching & I think it's from the track/treadmill. I thought both had a soft underlayment but I was on my hands & knees today looking at them & from what I can see the track is just some nylon/plastic coating over top of steel; the treadmill is also just a moving piece of the same stuff over top of a metal plate. I'm gonna dump these extra things & walk outside like I always do, & bike/row at the gym for additional aerobics. Who designs this stuff??? Probably someone who's never used it, but I'll bet it's 'cost effective'.

you betcha , sad to say the almighty $$ Is still the bottom line for most. Rumor around here is we might be getting a real gym...Cardninal is supposed to be searching the area...all we have now is Curves, and the wellness center, which is supposed to be part of the hospital but they charge $39 a month and if you want day care its extra and if you want to do a class its extra..blah,blah blah, I will for now stick with my stuff at home..plus I can be barefoot here :) They have some in East Indy but hell who wants to drive 30 min to work out?? Shelli, us cardio fanatics keep at it until it stays down. On a long grade mine will climb to 160, but within 3 mins it's back in the 120's. Late in the season like this it sometimes won't break 150.

A couple of thoughts come to mind, someday. On the LifeFitness bike I use, there are controls for the level of tension on the pedals, as well as a 'bike mode' or 'calorie mode'; the diff between bike & calorie is the calorie mode changes resistance with different speeds (slower rpm=more difficult resistance) whereas 'bike' doesn't. We may be doing things differently. Let's say I'm planning on a 30 min ride. I'll do the 1st 5 mins starting at about level 6 or 7 with the rpm in the 60's. For the second 5 mins I'll increase the level to 8 and the rpm into the 70's. I keep increasing the level of pedal pressure every 5 mins throughout the session, but once I reach rpm in the 80's to low/mid 90's I keep it there until the end. I'm sweating & breathing deeply after 10 mins or so but my HR remains pretty much the same after that time. By contrast, you may be going all out from the very beginning, I don't know.

OK, here's the leg WO I did. After a warmup on the Concept II:

Squats - 3 sets of 9 reps; added a rep to each set.
Machine leg curls - 3 @ 9; ditto.
Machine leg extensions - 3 @ 9, ditto.
Machine pec fly then rear deltoids - 3 @ 9, no change.
Roman chair hyperextensions then situps, alternating - 3 @ 15, kept these the same as last time because I'm still struggling to get them all in the last set.

No extra cardio, just my usual walk outside. And that's that.

Hi bikin' barb, thanks for stopping by.

Yesterday's cardio was 20 mins on the Concept II, added an extra 5 mins, then half an hour on the bike, ending HR 123. Feeling it a bit in my shoulders/knees today because I ramped up the speed during the last 5 mins, imagining I was sculling against the Univ. of Penn. guys on the river in Philly. They won.

Enjoy your tuesday folks.

[edit] Today's cardio was 30 mins on the bike, ending HR 120. Time to make dinner: probably a lettuce salad with red onion & cubed kohlrabi & balsamic vinaigrette, then green peppers stuffed with brown rice & some roasted garlic with fresh basil tomato sauce. Dessert will be cantalope, banana, and black cherries with a dollop of LF vanilla yogurt. Green tea has been sitting in the sun all day so that should be ready with some bruised mint leaves. At the store they had some mini red carnations so I picked up a bunch of those for the table. Why not, it's summer. Hope your dinner will be as tasty as ours is, my friends.

I just logged on again to edit my post from this morning but it looks like something happened with the system so here it is again: yesterday's WO

Machine chest press - 3 sets of 9 reps, added a rep to each set.
DB arm curls - 2 @ 12, 1 @ 9, added one to last set.
Machine arm extensions - 1 @ 12, 2 @ 9, added 1 to last 2 sets.
Kneeling DB rows - 2 @ 15, 1 @ 9, added 1 to last set.
DB shrugs - 2 @ 15, 1 @ 9, added 1 more set of 6 with more weight.
Seated V-handle pulldowns - 1 @ 12, 2 @ 9, added a rep to last 2 sets.
Pec fly/rear delts - 3 @ 10, added a rep to all sets.
Roman chair hyperextensions then situps, alternating - 3 @ 15. GROAN.

My back felt stiff before the WO & arms felt like they would be sore afterward so I went into the therapy pool for 20 mins of stretching/swimming. Home for a protein/flaxseed/oat/banana shake. That was then.

Today's cardio was half an hour on the bike, ending hr 116.

Thanks for stopping by folks, hope your thursday is going well.

LOL. Probably should save the internet for home then.

OK, here was my WO:

Squats 3 sets of 10 reps.
Machine leg curls 3 @ 10.
Machine leg extensions 3 @ 10.
Worked the shoulders with pec fly then rear delt machine 3 @ 11.
Finally on the Roman chair the dreaded hyperextensions then situps, alternating 3 @ 16.

Felt energetic and was able to add one rep to each set of everything. Experimented a little on the hypers and situps, adding an extra 30 seconds rest for a total of about 90 seconds. Worked like a charm; not that I was knocking them out like gsc you understand, but the last few hypers/situps went without the usual agonizing noises.

After all that spent 10 mins exploring the elliptical crosstrainer. I like it & think I'll use it since I've dumped the treadmill. And that's that.

Enjoy your saturday my friends.

In keeping with my tradition of putting pretty much everything into my thread (to keep the readers coming back, hehe) I thought I'd share a cooking tip with you. Since it's summer and fruits are ripe, many chefs (if you cook anything, you're a chef in my book) want to and sometimes try flambeing fruits. Sometimes it works, sometimes it fizzles. Flaming always adds a dramatic moment to a meal if done correctly, otherwise you get just a flicker and a bunch of Ohhhhh's. To avoid an anticlimax, if you know what I mean, read this closely.

For a memorable moment, use at least 2 oz. of cognac, dark rum, or an alcoholic liquor. At least 2, but don't drown things or you'll end up roasting marshmallows. OK. I use 3 measured shots. Now, the day of the meal when you're shopping buy the BEST ripe, unblemished fruit of your choice. When you're ready to flambe, (excuse the lack of accent mark there you canadians - Joel, Kimsquit, Gunn), remember that the fruit MUST BE at least 75 degrees. Cold fruit, like other things you may want to flambe, simply won't do. For best results, heat the fruit MILDLY in a covered chafing dish or an electric skillet. Warm the liquor too, but don't boil it. You can sprinkle the fruit lightly with granulated sugar if you like, then after pouring the warm liquor over the warm fruit, re-cover the pan for just a moment before lighting.
It's safer and more elegant if you use a taper rather than a wooden match, but it's your choice. Stand back - be careful. Be prepared for a small explosion. Dimmed lighting here, as in other venues, seems to add to the oomph. Enjoy!
