Ruger's 10/22 is a classic, but Marlin's Papoose is good too. It depends what you're looking for man.

Almost any scope will work on a .22, so you can go cheap. It's not like the recoil is significant enough to disrupt the zero. As long as you don't get a complete POS, you'll be fine.

I am a fan of the 10/22 (like most I suspect). Good advice here, just get a halfway decent scope. The cheapest glass at walmart might be a bad idea, but then again, very little recoil.

Bushnell, Simmons, whatever. They'll serve their purpose.

I wouldn't get anything by BSA though. :)

In my opinion the Rugger 10/22 is by far the best .22 cal out there. I've got 2! As far as scopes go... I'd just use the Iron sites on anything rimfire. They don't shoot far enough to really need a scope, but i've always had better than 20/20 vision :-). When I'm training new Dogs I like to shoot off squirls back feet so they would fall to the ground ready for a good fight! I should say when I used to train dogs I'm at college now and no time :-( but i'll always love my 10/22's\

edit: Bushnells are good, I had a bad experience with a simmons

I saw a deer in my back yard last night...couldn't have been more than 5 yards away.

I had my XD9 on me. I wanted to put a bonded sabre into it, but I live in a residential neighborhood. No dice. :(

I kill them all the time with the 10mm in my yard. Of course I live in the boonies. Now that bamagirls 8 year old son knows how to shoot the AK we keep close to the front door I don't get to shoot many - he gets them all.:D

Big difference from when I was a kid - there weren't any deer within 50 miles of where we live and damn few where we went to hunt. Now you have to dodge them with the vehicle every day on the way to work.

If it were legal I'd be AKing and AR-ing them constantly.

Free meat.

Once I get my suppressor it'll be a different story. Subsonic .458 SOCOM to the face, nobody will ever know. :D

My night kit is going to be just plain creepy. Thermal goggles, .458 SOCOM full auto suppressed AR with a gen 4 night scope and IR laser. A bit excessive, but that's OK. Last thing they'll see is the dim red glow of an IR illuminator, and then PFT dead.

another question: can the ruger be loaded with any ammo that is .22 caliber?
for example could it shoot .22-250 or .22 hornet along with .22 LR?

thanks

I don't think so. I really don't know much about varminting, but isn't .22-250 a slim-neck cartridge?

No - those are all centerfire cartridges. The 10/22 only fires 22 long rifle.

That is sick bro - damn sick!

Yeah, it's perfectly legal here to use the AK or the AR on deer, coyotes, and varmints. The only restriction for deer is centerfire ammo that mushrooms. My nearest neighbor is a thousand yards and two ridges away so no need for a suppressor.

10/22 all the way! By far the most highly rated semi-auto 22 rifle out there. I have one in stainless. I highly recommend getting the stainless. Butler Creek makes 25 round banana mags for the 10/22. The 10/22 comes with flush-fitting 10 rounders. Get several of the 25 rounders if you can. Much neater, cooler, funner. I can empty 25 rounds fastern you can say "cheese". I would choose CCI Stinger ammo for self-defense and varmint-hunting uses. Its got a little more velocity/energy than the standard cheap ammo. I dont know if you plan on it being possibly used for self-defense at home, but dont underestimate it if thats all youve got. You can put 25 rounds into a tight group in a heartbeat with it. You would at least scare the hell out of them. :D

Mine has a Butler Creek pistol grip folding stock, cheap tasco scope, and 25 rounds mags. Now thats a 'tactiCOOL' .22! (no pics, sorry, my comp and digicam arent on speaking terms right now...)

For a scope, I wouldnt go too high power or expensive on it. The .22 just isnt a flat enough shooting caliber to make a higher power scope meaningful. A cheap 3-9 x 32 will work great on it. The 10/22 comes with the scope base in a little manilla envelope, and youll need .22 scope rings if your scope doesnt come with em (theyre cheap).

Yep, definitely go with the Ruger, or a Marlin model. Marlin makes great .22 rifles. I've had a couple, and they're great.

I'm looking for a little varmint piece.

It's a toss-up between a .22 and an air rifle. Both would work. I want to eat some rabbits from my back yard.

I'd just .223 them, but it would destroy a lot of good meat, and my neighbors would **** bricks.

I got a 10/22 and it's a great little carbine. The nice thing about them is you can buy so much stuff for them. You can really trick 'em out. I got a Bushnell 4x mounted on mine. I also got like 5 extra clips and one 25 round banana clip from Butler Creek. I've killed so many damn animals with my 10/22. :D If you want the hottest load for a .22 get the ammo from CCI. They got the Viociter, Mini Mag and Stinger ammo. They all are hot loads, but I think Stinger is the fastest! :)

I dont remeber exactly and havent bought it in years since I stocked up on it, but Wal-Marts got it. I want to say it was like 3 or 4 $ for a little 50 round pack. It comes in a little blue transluscent plastic pack. Definately more expensive than the standard stuff though. But thats not going to be for plinking and general shooting. For that, you can get 500 and 550 round 22LR bricks at Wal-Mart for 9-10 $. Thats cheap. Ive got a bunch of the Winchester Wildcat 22 500 round packs, and theyre marked 8.99 on them. I would go ahead and buy a bit of it, as prices on ammo are going up across the board as we speak, and fairly quickly. Stay away from wax-coated bulets as they gum up your gun real quick. I dont even know if they make these any more, but they were fairly common not too long ago. You can tell by scraping your fingernail across them and see if wax comes off.

Ya, go to Wall-Mart they will have Stinger Ammo. It's $4 for 50 rounds. That's where I got mine. Mini-Mag amoom is a little cheaper. It comes in a 100 round box. It's good ammo to. It's made by CCI. You can really tell a diffeence in Stinger, Viociter, or Mini-Mag Ammo. It's louder, and it kicks a little harder. It's shoots much quicker than your standard cheap ass $10 for 500 rounds ammo. You get what you pay for. :D If your gonna be huntin with Stinger Ammo, I would double check and make sure it's shottin accurate. I sighted in my .22 with cheap ass ammo. I mean I sighted it in good I could hit a quarter at 50 yards. Well, when I went huntin with Stinger ammo in it, I din't hit ****, Went home shot some targets and it was shottin different than the cheap ammo. So make sure you sight in your gun with the ammo your gonna be huntin with! :D
