Not sure if it's big or whatever in the US.. think I've seen a few ads in the carp magazines over here but not a lot, any of you into it? My dad bought my nan a house with a lake at the back and stocked it with them, pretty cool fish. Have a pic I got of one of them.. will try and find some other pics I have of them.
The lake is about 2acres, it has like 2 sides, an island on one side which you can get to, it's kinda weird.
I'll try and draw a pic in paint to give you an idea. :D
Apologies for poorness of it already.. lol.

This is not a knock because in England it might be different but why would you intentionally stock a pond with carp? Are they considered good eating over there?

I heard they have alot of bones so its tedious to eat them.

No.. we don't eat them, carp fishing is a big challenge in the UK. We have lakes with carp in upto 60lbs, and some lakes where you have a 100 acre lake with literally 4 or 5 carp in which grow very large. Carp are pretty much the most challenging fish to catch in the UK. Also it's a lake not a pond. :D
No offence taken btw, I think I read Canda has a couple of rivers where carp are in or something? I've never heard a great deal about it in the US though.

I am sorry I called your lake a pond it's probably because I have seen 5 big lakes over here which are called Huron, Ontario, Michigan, Erie, and Superior after that I consider anything else just a pond but I will fix it in my mind.
The great lakes are Huron, Ontario, Michigan, Erie, Superior, and 2 acre lake in England. How's that..;)

Heh, yeah I see your point. You have some huge waters over there.. biggest we have are lakes that span a couple of hundred acres really. :)

Yep, never heard of folks fishing for carp. I would always get pissed if I did catch one....
They're not highly looked upon around here.

Carp fishing is pretty big in Canada...
Lots of Polish and European people fishing for those guys along the bottom of rivers. The meat is red though and looks nasty, although I have never eaten it so cant say for sure. They are bottom feeders though and they can get HUGE!!
Its fun to go out and catch them with some bread-balls on a hook, although they can do some serious damage to your equipment if you just have a lite rod etc. I wouldnt eat em' but they get huge and are fun to try and catch, you can always see huge ones swimming along the bottom but they never bite :(
Especially in the St Lawrence, real clear water see those monsters swimming along the bottom...

Yeah in the UK carp as much as I hate to say it have wisened up to traditional methods. Google hair rigs/boilies to get a rough idea.

hey, if it grows big and puts up a fight, i'll try to catch it! There are a couple old-timers near where I live that carp fish every spring, but after that they switch to other species.

We used to catch carp out of a river at my cousins house on canned corn. The only reason we fished for them was because they were big. Now, once on the Shenandoah river in VA I got a carp on a rapala jointed minnow (WTF?). He hit the lure at 6" below the surface. I thought I had a trophy bass for a few seconds until I saw huge scales. I've also accidentally snagged them when bass fishing. They get up in the coves and root around.
I know people who fish for them. I have caught a few by accident, usually on white jigs. They are relatively easy to catch here because almost no one targets them. I understand they are highly prized in the UK.

I lost a rod/reel combo to a carp using a hair rig. lol The initial hit sent the rod flying out of the holder I had it in and pulled it into the water before I could catch it.

In cold water Carp have a protein based diet. Pretty common to catch them while crankin :)

So true! Here in the states the Common Carp is viewed very poorly.
Shame really. There are a couple brits here that fish at our Carp Anglers Group outings. I learned a ton from them :)

went out for carp today. didn't catch anything, there were tons of carp cruising around some looked to be high-teens to 20lbs. Couldn't get them to feed though they just sat there.

I have been having best luck this time of year with very sweet stuff.
Tutti frutie boilie dipped in tutti frutie oil has been working well with the hot spell.

In Pittsburgh. We would go down to the Monogahela River on the South Side with our Zebco 202s and a can of corn and catch carp and catfish right and left. Carp are a hard fighting fish and will pull your rod and into the water when the run.
The river wasn't clean back then, so we wouldn't keep any of the fish.
I did know of some older gentleman who would catch carp and take it home and make gefilte fish out of it.

I feel for you.. I've had it before too. Now I have baitrunners.. much easier but if you're fishing tight to snags you're pretty ****ed.

Thanks mate. I'm lucky in that it's actually in a town which is uncommon as it's about an acre and a half - 2 acres in size the lake. My dad's leaving it to me in his will.
Went on Sunday.. typical, 20 minutes in my dad leaves his water at the house, I run up and go get it.. come back to him hitting a screaming run on my carp rod. Pic attached.
Then I lost one, so decided to have a go piking. :D
Caught two small jacks, one perch and then this mofo: Thing was, he snapped me up earlier when I was small fishing, I caught it and it had two rigs in its mouth, I was like wtf then realised what had happened. Stupid fish! Not the biggest but quite a nice fish. The lake supposedly has some 30lbers in, which isn't hard to believe the freaksih amount of roach/rudd/bream in there, it's unreal. You sometimes see some monsters lurking.. never fished for them really though so shall have to see! Also has had carp caught upto 25lbs before the new carp were put in, what are known as the originals. The new fish were all between about 6-12lbs, now some are getting on for mid-high doubles. Nice to see it progressing.

Yeah get the old dog mixer out and see what happens. Going to try and get a 20lb carp and 20lb pike over this summer. Both are going to be hard but think I can ride it out hopefully..
Where abouts are you from in the UK?
And yeah couldn't agree more.. I just love the screaming runs with a bite alarm and when you see the line peel off.. the dee dee deeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee... is such a rush. :D
A smallun' is better than nothing.

took a trip down to a river about a mile from my house today, its the neshanic if anyone from the central new jersey area may recognize the name, and as usual there were tons of massive carp. Im not good with guessing weights but almost all were above two feet with a few hitting three feet. I've never been able to catch them, but after checking out that carpanglers forum i think im gonna try this summer to get a few, and to keep on it.
