Hello everyone, I have decided to pick up fishing. The last time I fished was my first time, and I swore it would be my last. But I just can't stand to be away from the sea, so I decided I want to fish. I don't mind waiting, I can be very patient. But I am a very, very big beginner and I don't know where to start. I live in NY, so there might not be some great places to fish, but I don't mind moving out of state either to go fishing. I want to fish just for the fun of it. So how should I get started?

I never go too much into fishin'. I always found it to be boring, cuz I never catch notin'!:( I usually fish for like an hour at the most, get bored, than start throwing big ass rock into the water, than I scare all the fish away! I have fishin', and caught fish though. Like up here in Colorado, I have caught just trout in the river. Rainbow, and some other kind of trout.:o

To get started just go buy a decent fishin' pool, and all the fishin' equipment, and get to it. I never could fish, cuz I have ADD, an get bored easy. That's why I hunt, I find it more exciting!:D

DO a search for on line fishing messages boards in your area. You will find most anglers are more then willing to help the beginners out!

I belong to a few on line clubs and we have several outings each year. Get to meet people and learn from each other.

Do you have any buddies that fish at all? If you do then go with them a few times. If you absolutely have never fished much before then you have alot to learn, take it all in, but most of all have fun while you are doing it!

Don't expect to hammer them every time you go out, but good luck man, it is truely a great sport.

First question.... What are you mainly going to fish for? This will help because each species kinda have their own way to fish for them (although some overlap).

I want to fish just for fun, I don't really care if I catch fish or not, but if I do catch one I can eat, I just got free protein lol
Anyway I don't know anyone that fishes

Do what fitnessman said and find an online forum and start asking about the type of fish in your area and how you can fish them.

Do you live near rivers, streams, or any lakes??

I don't really know what to tell you.... Bass hit artificials - spinnerbaits, crankbaits, plastic worms, etc. If you are going to be fishing from the bank, I would suggest catfishing (you might catch lots of other fish this way too). Just put a worm on a hook, put a sinker on the end of your line and throw it out. When the fish starts biting, jerk the rod straight up to hook him...

It's going to be hard for you to learn how to do simple basic things of fishing, ie casting, tieing line, etc. without actually going with someone who has done that.

Sure you can find a website that will walk you though all of it but how much of it are you going to remember when you get to your fishing spot?

Yep... If I'm not on these boards during my free time I'm on my local fishing message boards... Of course being in MN, I can't swing a dead cat without hitting a fishing conversation.

If you have buddies who fish... Spend more time with them fishing...

Otherwise it's going to depend on the species...

When I got serious about fishing, I just accepted that year #1 was going to be a lot of Trial and Error... Heavy on the error...

You can learn a lot from reading a book on fishing, but experience is the only thing that matters when you boil it all down...

You've got to log on the hours...

I didn't get "Serious" about fishing until 1999-2000...

I had my buddy who's been fishing all his life, for about 50-70 hours a year, teach me the basics...

Then I just fished as much as I could... Average of about 200 hours a year... For 5 years straight...

I know out fish him everytime we're on the water...
Hell I outfish everyone I'm with...

Why... Because I have a 1000+ hours logged in over the last 5 years (12 already this year) To their 1000 in the last 20 years...

Sometimes it really is just about putting in your time...

Oh Lord..I will log 30 hours just this weekend

Very true about putting your time in. I like to call it TOW (Time On Water) Nothing takes the place of time on water.

Yes, that's what I like about it; the time on the water
