No, I am not defending the bear it needs or needed to be destroyed but I wonder just how much all the other campers are responsible for the problem.
Hell the hunters that went after it used honyebuns to try to catch it which tells me it was probably used to eating garbage out of the cans.
I also wonder if the bear had been in the area for sometime and poeple had been feeding it and coaxing it closer and closer.
I just know I have seen people do some crazy things around bears in Montana and Wyoming. I once seen a guy jump out of his car camera in hand and chase a full grown blackbear down a ravine wiht lots of twists and turns..Next day in the paper it said, "Tourist mauled by bear".. I wish had been it charge of the newspaper it would have said, "Bear defends self from crazed tourist".

It's a combination of the bear just being a bear, and tourists being stupid.

That's what bears eat is garbage. When I went bear hunting a few years ago to bait them I used honey, apples, oranges, bannas, basically anything that I had that was rotting in my house. I never shot one but from talking with people that have hunted them before that is how you are supposed to do it.

Some of you guys know better than I do, Hell ive only seen bears in the zoo...But is it so uncommon for a black bear to attack a human without any sort of provocation??? I guess that is a pretty broad question, and hartski pretty much answered it already...
But most of the reports act like it is so uncommon for a bear to get hostile with humans???? I know if i spotted or heard one coming I would get the hell outta dodge

If you don't want to drown, don't take a cruise.
If you don't want HIV/AIDS, don't have unprotected sex.
If you don't want to be attacked by a bear, don't go in the woods.

One more thing:
I would bet a lot of money at the track that the mother won't take her other kids to that park again.

Years ago I got to hear this guy speak on Grizzles and one of the things that he stressed was that they have personalities and they are a lot smarter than you think so to assume anything about them might make you lunch.

By the way I recommend this mans books to anyone that still feels the pain and sees the ghosts of the Vietnam war.

Sounds like your saying if you don't want anything to happen to you you should stay home?
Just because you go in the woods does not mean that you will be attacked by a bear. But if you are going to an area that is known to have bear around you should carry a side arm with you.

Oh, yeah, definitely. If a park does not have wild animals, by all means, hike, walk, etc.
But I'm assuming that these people knew that black bears were common in that area.
When around apex predators it is very smart to be prepared to defend yourself from them. Feeding or molesting them is inviting them to eat you as far as I am concerned. It is not uncommon for black bears to try to eat people.

I don't know about this case but there's a lot of stupid people who don't leave well enough alone. A friend told me he was driving down the highway and saw a mother and her children feeding black bear cubs. He pulled over and warned the family of the danger they could be in from a returning mother bear. The family told my friend to mind his own business. He got back in his truck and shook his head and left.

I think its pretty stupid that they are hunting down the bear that did it. There are sooooo many bear in that park that they are probably going to be shooting a bear at random and saying it was the bear in question....just so people arent scared of the "psycho bear" that attacked the girl.

I think they are just tranquilizing them, then looking at paws, etc.

That is where you are wrong, if you are attacked by a Grizzly cover up try and protect your vital areas, with a Black Bear fight for your life because they are the ones most likely going to have you as a snack. This is a dependant on if they are in Predatory mode.

Screw you! If a grizzly is coming for me, it'll be-BangBangBangBangBangBangBang, reload, BangBangBangBangBangBangBang, reload and approach bear cautiously, then BangBangBangBang.
Anyone that is in natural areas where bears are known to be without a sidearm is foolish.

Witnesses say the bear finished, then attacked the tourist. Experts theorize the bear was looking for a cigarette.

and it'd chase your ass down. you just push it's predatory instincts by running. if you see a brown bear, dont make eye contact. wave your hands slowly and talk, so it knows you're a human. a lot of the time, brown bears don't give a f*ck as long as you don't startle them, they aren't with their babies, or are not eating something they killed. they might hop up on their hine legs, but they're just getting a better view. they also bluff, and you're better off calling it than running. they'll sometimes run at you a little, and then stop. if you run, then you're going to have your ass chewed off.
i think black bears are similar, but instead of playing dead if they start mauling you, fight or die.

lolrh
btw, i hate tourists. i live in a tourist trap in alaska, so they drive me f*cking nuts in the summer time. good for the economy-bad for my stress levels. i've had people slam on the breaks in front of me, and just get out of their car because they see a moose off in the distance.
i remember seeing some footage of tourists in montanna or somewhere, and they were just hanging out with bears, taking pictures, and getting really close, like they were at a f*cking zoo or something. DO YOU SEE A FENCE, PEOPLE? NO. people can be such idiots.

Where I work we are not allowed to carry guns, mining property and also it makes the upper senior management nervous lol.
Also in Canada we can not carry Hand guns, prohibited weapon, I believe the only way to be able too carry a Handgun is to have a free miners license.
I agree with your Bang Bang Bang approach works best of all.
The books by James Garry Shelton are interviews with all sorts of people through B.C. and the Yukon including hunters that have been attacked by both Blacks and Grizzly.
The books are a very good read.

Get this, Jasper National park,Grizzly Bears and then throw in Japanese tourists and there assorted cameras. On my way through I seen a family (Japanese) 1 takeing the picture and 2 others backs to the bear backing up at the cameramans request for a better shot, luckily the bear high tailed it in the other direction. Must not like japanese food.
