They have stands for this purpose, they are placed beside your bench (one stand on each side) and postions the bumbells where you would like them...I dont know if this is exactly what you want though...

Or right here on bodybuilding.com http://www.bodybuilding.com/store/cp/ph.html

I do it the same way as in the gym, but just with the handle across my thigh instead of the end.

I used to work out with gym shorts, but lately have been using thicker material canvas utilty or cammo shorts, just cuz they were handy. I just place the DB end a little toward my inner thigh instead of the DB end directly on the thigh. This puts the last plate of the DB on my thigh instead of the threaded end, and is not a problem to kick it up.

I realize these are very expensive but if $ isn't an issue these are pretty cool. http://store.sorinex.com/Dumbbell_Spotter_Drop_w_bench_Max_Racks_p/dbsdi-2.htm

thats a nice little unit, but sweeeet JESUS! 2 expensive, I think it'd be cheaper to go with power hooks.

Buy an IronMaster Superbench with the spotting stands. I can lift to failure without getting into trouble.

with ironmasters he wouldn't have that problem, cause he can balance them on the thigh and kick them up like fixed DBs
