I don't know how many of you guys use dogs to hunt/retrieve but I'm hoping this thread takes off.
I myself am a 3rd generation dog breeder (Bloodhounds, Bassets, Beagles, Cirnecos) and I'm starting this thread to see if there are any other breeders/aficionados on this board.
I am the first Bloodhound breeder in my family, my father specializes in Beagles and Bassets and my grandfather specializes in Dachshunds and Cirnecos (native only to Sicily). Anyway, if anyone here wants to post with their own pictures I encourage you.
The attached pictures are of my current dam.
Well actually I just found out tha tI can't upload my pics because they're 1600x1200. Way to start a thread. If anyone could tell me how to resize them to 1000x1000 I would appreciate it.

I have always wanted a bloodhound. I grew up with red bones and black and tans. I was wondering would you reccomend a bloodhound for a pet? No hunting involved? And around how much do you charge for a pup?

What's the name of the breed that is in between a beagle and an American Foxhound. I thought that there was one that was smaller the the foxhound, but larger than the beagle.

ah yes, are they as good of trackers as a beagle?

Well I love bloodhounds and I keep my dam indoors but I would not reccomend it if there is not someone home to give a lot of attention to the dog.
Bloodhounds are very very independent, if you leave them alone inside for long periods of time they will establish their own form of dominance. If you have the time to raise them from when they're weaned, then by all means yes. A few warnings:
1. Drool is an issue. I have no idea what it's made of. It dries very quickly and it's tough, sort of like rubber cement (an exaggeration, but you get the point).
2. Their tails will knock everything over. A bloodhound's tail hits with amazing impact. It can knock over a large lamp or a vase with one swing.
3. They are rather disobedient. They like to follow their nose and they like to have things their way. If you can be there day in and day out to discipline the puppy, these issues can be curbed.
4. Bloodhounds are extremely clever. Examples: When mine slips out of her collar she chews it in half so it cannot be reattached. There is a gate with a lever in the kitchen, she found out how to pull the lever with her mouth and open the gate. This is not to say that other dogs cannot do the same, but this is the first dog in my experience that has.
The price of the pup would depend on the stud we use. This weekend I should be meeting with some people who want to breed my dog (red) with theirs (black & tan). I would prefer to breed her with a liver, but that may cost more as there are no liver breeders around here.

I personally don't think so, but it's all dependent on how you train the dog. I'm sure as scent hounds they make excellent trailers, I just find beagles more receptive. We've never bred harriers but my father had one once, he was very odd and very unresponsive, ran away at about 2 yrs.

Real good lookin dog man. I have an english bulldog and a chiuhaha(moms) and the bulldog is one of the nastiest dogs to own. But I would like to own a bloodhound some day.

Do you hunt her at all? What are bloodhounds good for hunting? They don't seem like they would be that fast.

Not real good for hunting. If you're hunting rabbits or other small game I would reccomend beagles. Bloodhounds are better for trailing or treeing. If you hunt raccoons a bloodhound will find him and tree him (and not leave the tree until you bring it down). They are fast, but not as fast as most gundogs or sight hounds.
New York isn't exactly raccoon country, so I don't hunt with her. I just breed them because I love the dogs. I hope to move to Kansas or Missouri after grad school so I can put my dogs to good use.
To Thordic: Thanks a lot for the comments, I never owned either of those breeds so I wouldn't know. What is nasty about the bulldog? Temperament?

I love me my hounds. But you gotta stay the Alpha male or they get too ornery. :)
Tip: Beagles are escape artists. 6 Foot fences minimum! Dig 'em down two feet too.

Damn, I love beagles. I had one from when I was 14 to 20. Died last winter, got his collar caught on a pipe he was trying to get through and choked to death, then was burried by snow. I did not live at home at the time (away at college). Didnt find him for 3 months. I searched every animal shelter within a hundred miles of my house. Worst day of my life when my step-dad found him and told me about it. Good luck guys, some beautiful dogs!

that sucks man really sad. I've only known mine for 6 months and I would be in depression mode for awhile if she had died.
But on the upside training her is going great! she is really learning alot and taking it in fast. Very cool to see how quickly they can learn what words mean what.
I can tell her to sit, stay and then I walk 30yards or so and drop the training dummy and she will stay there the entire time! She won't move a muscle until I say "go get it" and then she sprints to the dummy and brings it straight to me.

Real nice coloration. I like the unique patterns. I had a beagle once that had a white line going straight down it like a skunk, she was my favorite (stolen in 2003, I live in a bad area).
That all-white one is nice too, doesn't really look like a beagle to me but I'll take your word for it.

if youre referring to mine, yeah i know shes not the tradional beagle colors all over but shes 100% beagle. He father was a blue tick, hence the white body with some slight ticking. and her mother was a regular tri-colored hence the tri-colored face.
here is our first beagle that we lost about a year ago.

Okay he's the one that started it all. I had never seen one of these until a couple of years ago, now it's all I will hunt anything with. We use them for hogs and bears and mine do double duty as guard dogs (bite and guard training by an ex marine friend of mine who worked dogs in vietnam and obediance by me). This particular one is also quite famous statewide for recovering wounded deer even after 2-3 days. He is now 5 and I have two others that look very similar to him. More pics later.
His name is Jeb Stuart because he is a pompous ass and he is an Original Mountain Cur.

Thordic the largest Mountain curs are 70 or so pounds. Black Mouth Curs used in Florida for hogs will go well over a hundred pounds - they are the really big guys of the Cur family. The Catahoula (formerly called the Catahoula Leopard Cur, the state dog of Lousiana originating in Catahoula Parrish, LA) is the second largest with many specimens over a hundred pounds. I have a big glass eyed 'houla (Louie - 95 pounds) but he is one of the free ride dogs we have - we love him but he couldn't earn his keep to save his cowardly life :D.
Mine are not really that large - Jeb is 53 pounds, Chunk (Jeb's parvo-survivor but brain damaged and totally hilarious son) is 55 pounds and Pesty the pointy nosed little tasmanian devil bitch is 32 pounds. Mine are all athletic ability and not so much braun. Jeb has been cut down by hogs bad enough that I had to carry him out of the swamps three times (once with his guts completely out) but he can still flat foot jump a five foot fence without touching the top. Pesty can run almost 35 mph and Chunk has his dad's nose but unfortunately not his intellect.

heres my hunting buddy. his name is buck, hes a 2 year old german shorthair pointer. were looking to stud him out, he has a champion blood line, fully registered with all papers. he is an excellent hunting dog and a very very social temperment. he defintely has a personality. hes great on pheasant and quail and gets bored with dove and duck as he doesnt like sitting around. im getting a chesapeake bay retreiver for that.
