Whats better then that?

Well I went out to the desert today with a friend looking for soft sand to try out my new Grand Vitara. We were going around the desert for about an hour until we found the perfect spot. It was beautiful, a lot of soft sand to try out the new car.

I must say it performed very well, I didnt even need to throw it on 4x4. Until I went down a sort of ditch, which obviously I didnt see. The front tires went deep (not very) under the sand and the rear right tire was hanging in the air.

It took us quite some time to dig it out. Of course we didnt bring any shovels so we had to do it by hand. There was a lot of sand to remove from around the tires and even more from under the car. That I'm used to but the problem was that today was very windy so as soon we got down to dig the sand out we got a handful of sand blown in our eyes, also we rested for about 10 min. and found out that the wind was bring the sand back to were we already cleared :(.

In the end it took a lot of hard work and sweat, but we managed to get it out

Nah, the only reason it has 4 wheel drive is to get in your driveway when you're too laxy to shovel snow.

THIS is a real 4x4.

Nah thats far from being a real off roader (seriously). This is just taking the easy way out. Compare stock cars without adding anything to them, you'll find that your truck doesnt have as much muscles as it shows.

The only American off roader is the Hummer1 and the Silvirado 4x4

You must understand that you're comparing different terrain. What is considered as an off roader in America isnt necessarily an offroader over hear. But I guess you're right, I'll throw in the Wrangler its actually bad ass.

But Japanese cars dominate the desert over here.

I wouls still think any of the Chevy, Ford, or Dodge trucks would do better than a Grand Vitara simply because of the larger, wider tires and higher ground clearance. A Chevy S-10 ZR2 would be great for playing in the sand.

I still say that just about any American truck will be better than any Japanese 4x4.

Actually stock it has a 1300cc 4 banger, the earlier SJ and LJ series had 2,3 and 4 cylinder 2 cycle motors. That one has a 1600cc 16 valve 1995 Tracker motor in it, I can cruise at 75 all day long in that one. I have another with a VW 1600cc turbo diesel that runs on waste vegetable oil. They're cool toys, much better off road than the Vitaras. That thing is a Saturn Vue in Suzuki disguise.

That's your car right? Look at the rear wheel up in the air, Independent Rear Suspension (IRS) is the reason it's up off the ground. A solid rear axle would have flexed enough to let both wheels hit the ground probably giving you enough traction to not get stuck in the first place.

Trucks and truck based SUVs. IRS rides better but solid rear axles are better for offroad. Since the wheels are connected by a solid axle, the upwards motion of your left/rear wheel would have in turn pushed the right/rear down in contact with the ground.

Heres a good site that explains it pretty well with good pictures. . http://detr6oit.50megs.com/ifs2.html

Yep, front wheel drive. I don't know that the wood would have helped. most of it was in odd shapes and probably wouldn't have supported a tire- plus, the sand only got worse further ahead. It was a fun day either way. :) You're not living if you don't get in a bind once in a while.

Wood or rocks, always place them under the tires, they usually help. As for the last statement, thats so true. I'm planing for something more extreme next week, right after my exams. Hope I screw things up :) but I doubt it because I'm looking for some bada** off road SUVs.

That is in Kuwait. As for the camel I'm not sure. I remember seeing a lot of these white camels but not as many as the brown ones but it was fun driving between them. That's one drawback to buying something like that. No-one makes lift kits or any cool accessories for them. And there's really not a whole lot of room to put bigger wheels and tires on it without a lift kit.

You could probably sell your Grand Vitara, buy a used Jeep Wrangler, and have enough money left over to start tricking it out.

As I said you cant judge your car by applying accessories to it. If you really want to judge your car and yourself you must be able to do it with a stock car. Thats the beauty in off roading, if you start playing with the car then you lost everything.

Stock car = Skilled Driver.

Accessorised = Driver looking for the easy way out.

Wrangler is great off roader but sucks on raod also it doesnt have good gas consumption. The Vitara performed well off road , has great gas consumption and believe it or not it has a strong grip to the road.

I used to drive a 1996 Suburban 5.7 liter , 8 cylinder and around 335 HP, it drank gas as you would drink water when placed in a scorching desert. I miss that car it was great and my true love. But the Vitara is economic and everything I wanted.

I totally dissagree on that. No-one makes a vehicle that will do everything I'd want, so I customize what i have until it will do what I want. Besides, I love working on cars, so modifying and customizing cars and trucks is half of the fun.

If anything, I'd say that someone who settles for a stock vehicle is taking the easy way out.;)

Modifying cars is very interesting. But stock cars builds drivers off roading skills. With a stock car you will know when to step on the brakes and when to step on the accelerator, you will know when to turn the wheel and when to keep it straight. You will know how to get your car out of ditchs and soft sand without relying on others.

Cars with big tires will never get stuck unless they are drove by a women :D and for that you will never get the neccessary skills.

Hartski
04-12-2006, 07:15 AM
Well, you always start out with a stock vehicle. You learn what it can and can't do, and how to push it to it's limit. Then you start going on rougher terrain, get stuck and break parts, so you fix it and modify it so it'll do a bit more, then you push it too hard and something else breaks, so you have to fix and modify again, ect.

And trust me, the more stuff you do to your vehicle so it'll go on the roughest terrain possible, the more skilled you have to be driving it because it gets alot more dangerous. Like if you are rock crawling, you can roll the vehicle and kill everyone in the truck and any bystanders that get in the way. If you roll your truck in a mud bog, you can drown before you get out, ect.

I must say I never thought about it this way, I guess you have a point there. I still prefer stock cars, I guess its because we dont have harsh terrain over here. Its only sand and harder means the sand is more and softer, thats why you dont need to tune up your car. Atleast not hardcore tune up.

Yeah, we have all sorts of rough terrain, so there's tons of different ways to build up your truck. A Mudder will be totally different than a Baja truck, and those are way different than a rock crawler.

To the threadstarter, I agree with you a lot as far as the modification thing goes. In your neck of the...uhhhh....desert you don't really have trees, boulders, or very many mudholes to get around. The idea behind American offroading is to build up a vehicle based on your strengths and preferences and slowly build your skill level, as not to flip your rig and cause thousands of dollars in costly repairs.

Also whereas your vitara is brand new and probably expensive by middle class standards, Wranglers and other such American vehicles are fairly inexpensive and can be bought used at a good price and modified to your hearts content. The Wrangler itself is one of the most flexible modifying vehicles to ever hit the market. Hell, if you buy one you're gauranteed to drop an assload of paychecks into the beast. Another thing is that your vehicle is most likely a daily driver as well. Here in the states it's a fairly standard thing to build a project vehicle which if wrecked will not cause you to not be able to commute back to work on Monday.

There are very large differences between the two styles and they really cannot be compared without being very open-minded. But hey, everybody has their own cup of tea. :D

Actually that made a lot of sense. You have different terrain over there, so I guess you need to tune up your cars to be able to tackle these obstacles. I wish I could go to America and trying some off roading over there, sounds really great.

Hartski stop posting these damn pics of different terrains you've got  Or I'm getting on the next plane to America :D

Chuck E Cheese rules, man. :D

As for Jeep Wranglers, a friend and I were in his yesterday checking out my land I just bought. We were all over the 3.5 acres, heavily wooded. It got in and out of some pretty thick stuff. The Vitara wouldn't have made it for one reason: ground clearance. We had to climb in and out of quite a few large ruts, and barely made it.

We broke it in pretty well. The subdivision is under construction, so there are plenty of undeveloped lots. We went down one road at about 35-40 MPH and when the pavement stopped, we kept going into a field area. There was a bump and whoom...we were airborne for a split second. We just about endo'd, but came out of it all right. We turned a few donuts, ran through a dry stream bed and went home. Four Wheeling at it's middle-class finest. :D

At one point somebody asked about real American off road vehicles...

Here's my list-

M37 Powerwagon
Any Flatfender jeep
2005 or Newer Powerwagon (factory lockers and winch, what else can you ask for)
68-73 Ford F250 Highboys
Hummer H1 and the H3
Jeep TJ
Jeep XJ
Early (small) Broncos

Any of those should suffice.

I've never been to a desert, but I don't imagine I'd like it much. I like places with lots of forests and wildlife. Places that have different seasons.

I need to steal my sister's digi-cam so I can take some pics of my place and the surrounding countryside. Every nice day I go for a drive, I look at the scenery and wonder how anyone would want to live somewhere else.

I was actually going to ask you to take pics of your area. I would love to see how it looks like. As for the desert, well you get used to it, its quite beautiful just seeing sand and emptiness as far as your eyes can take you.

There is also a natural reserve, it has 3 types of rabbits and about 5 types of snakes and a lot of different birds.

As for wildlife, well I showed you camels but we also got those :D.

You use your winch or another truck to pull you out. That's why we put so much extra stuff into our trucks. ;)

Well, mud isn't a problem if you've got lockers. :D

I don't think I have anymore of my pictures because I lost them when I reformatted my comp. I don't have an offroader right now but I'm getting a 95 Jeep Wrangler Rio Grande with Dana lockers front and back in a few weeks.

The rig I used to have was a 79 Chevy Blazer with an overhauled Chevy small block. I had an edelbrock intake, 4 barrel carb, hooker headers, and a flowmaster exhaust. It had a four inch suspension lift and 36's (god I have no clue how they tucked when I flexed). That beast could go anywhere and do anything. I let it sit for too long though and it just eventually rusted out. I took the entire front clip off and pulled the engine then got rid of it. The engine still lives on in an older model Chevy Silverado.

edit: by the way, the engine was supposed to go in one of these

For SUV and Pickup Drivers

The National Transportation Safety Board recently divulged they had covertly
funded a project with the U.S. auto makers for the past five years, whereby
the auto makers were installing black box voice recorders in four-wheel
drive pickup trucks and SUV's in an effort to determine, in fatal accidents,
the circumstances in the last 15 seconds before the crash.

They were surprised to find in 40 of the 50 states the recorded last words
of drivers in 61.2 percent of fatal crashes were, "Oh, ****!"

Only the states of Nevada, Oklahoma, Tennessee, South Carolina, North
Carolina, Mississippi, Texas, Arkansas, Alabama and Kentucky were different,
where 89.3 percent of the final words were, "Hold my beer, I'm gonna try
somethin."
