This thread is particularly aimed at all the good ol' boys in Canada and the States who love hunting big game. Oh yeah, nothing is better than getting out to a log cabin deep in the north of canada with some buddies and some molson canadian draft ready to bag some wild meat.

Anyways my ideal setup is The PVI-2 high grid Swarovski scope with maybe an old german mauser or russian dragunov sniper rifle from world war 2. Supposedly they are just beautifully made.

your thoughts.......

we have an outdoor recreation forum now ;) you will get plenty more interest out there ;) But yeh, I wanna start hunting, just need to find some folks to join, I don't think it's a very good idea for me to start all on my own, gotta find someone to tutor me. Maybe a gun club or something...

CZ 550 American Safari Magnum Bolt-Action Rifle in .375 H&H.

Took this baby to Africa on a big game hunt. My dad took out an elephant with it back in the day before they became semi endangered.

Smart guy, theres a lot to learn in all the different fields of hunting game and with certain weapons. The coolest experience is if you have a grandfather to go with, you will build great memories. Yeah I didnt know about that outdoor rec forum oops.

So what did you do with the elephant ? I am not really into sport hunting.

Wow, there ar so many good rifles, scopes, and calibers to choose from, it's almost impossible to pick just one setup. Hunting moose or bear would require a far different setup than hunting prairie dogs.

Ok, Here's what I would get:

Browning A-Bolt chambered in the .300 Winchester Short Magnum, with the BOSS adjustable Muzzle Brake.

http://www.browning.com/products/catalog/firearms/detail.asp?value=001B&cat_id=035&type_id=032

For a scope, I'd pick a Burris Black Diamond 8X-32X-50mm with the Ballistic Mil Dot reticle

http://www.burrisoptics.com/blackdiamond.html

And for hunting......um..........certain agressive bipeds from long distance, I would get one of these:

A Dokota Arms "Longbow" T-76 Tactical Engagement Rifle Chambered in .338 Lapua Mag.

http://www.dakotaarms.com/currentinventory/inventory_item_detail.php?serialNumber=T0092!^1796 3

With a U.S. Optics 10X-42X-58mm scope.

I like to challenge myself so I often go out hunting bears with a .22 WMR 10/22. It's tough because normally if you shoot them once it doesn't even bother them and they keep going so you have to keep tracking him and normally it takes at least a half dozen shots before he starts to slow down. Then I normally just move in and use my Remington model 7 in .223 to finish him off.

with maybe an old german mauser

we have an old german mauser in my family from WW2. Genuine, with tiny swastikas carved into the barrel. I dont know how my grandfather got it, or how he was able to bring it over to america. It lacks a scope, because it doesnt have any rails to mount one on it. Would be a dream if it did. It is very accurate with the standard site tho. Dont use it for hunting, just target practice. We leave the real work up to the ol' 12 gauge.

Also, even tho we have this gun, we are not racist and my family flead from the nazis during the war.

Thats possibly the most horrible thing Ive heard...how could you put another living creature through that pain? I really hope you rethink your hunting practices.

Anywho...My dream rifle would be all flat black, barrel stock and scope so its glareless, bolt action, high power scope, removeable magazine, .300 caliber maybe .308, and a custon stock fitted to me.

I own my ideal rifle....

Winchester Model 70 30-06, synthetic stock, black barrel and scope. The scope is a Swarovski leatherwood Camputer art 6-24x50mm M-1200.

Last time I went to the range I sighted it in at 300yds, and nailed all 7 shots in a 3"x3" box.

30-06 is tried, proven and true. It'll take down any big game america has!

Check with a gun shop. They might know where you can get military mounts so you can mount a scope. Also, check with Cabelas. They carry a long list of military mounts for older military guns. With those, you can mount just about any scope.

Well, I've never been hunting, so I can't say what an ideal hunting rifle would be- but I'm going deer hunting this fall with a friend in NM, so I'll be taking my 700VSF in .308. I'm thinking it's probably a bit heavy and long for carrying around in the mountains, but I'll survive.

Those Mausers are great. A gun shop in town where I went to college had thousands of them, although I think most didn't have the Nazi markings. Probably a dozen of my friends bought one so I got to shoot them, they were a lot of fun.

1 MOA is OK for a hunting rifle, but serious long range rifle will short 1/4 MOA.

My AR shoots 1 MOA for christ sakes. :D

(AK shoots 4 MOA so point taken)

I have always shot the 180 grain, the extra velocity means longer shot.
I was actualy thinking of buying a 338 for this comeing hunting season, lots of Grizzly where I will be going and there are a couple that are pretty testy.I work in the area MONSTER Moose.

180 grain will have LESS velocity because it's a heavier bullet than the 168 grain. ;)

The grain refers to the size/weight of the bullet, not the amount of gunpowder in the cartridge....therefore it will have less velocity like Hartski said.

I shoot a 140 gr. in my .270...does a good job on whitetail. Wouldnt really want to hunt anything bigger with that size round though.

A heavier bullet will have more energy, but it will be slower and not shoot as flat as a lighter, faster round.

I got some surplus military rounds for my .308 back in the day, and they went through any steel plate I shot at, up to 1" thick. I even put a hole in a bridge support with those things. Anyways, I popped the bullet out of a casing and weighed it, and it was only 142 grains. Those rounds must have had a stupidly high velocity for a .308.

Reminds me of a joke.....:)

A man who just got a raise decides to buy a new rifle for hunting season. He goes to a gun shop and asks the clerk to show him the best hunting rifle he has. The clerk shows him a beauty, and the man says he'll take it.

The clerk then takes out a scope, and says to the man, "You may want a scope, too. This scope is so good, you can see my house all the way up on that hill."

The man takes a look through the scope and starts laughing.

"What's so funny?" asks the clerk.

"I see a naked man and a naked woman running around in the house," the man replies.

The clerk grabs the scope from the man and looks at his house. Then he hands two bullets to the man and says, "Here are two bullets, I'll give you this scope for free if you take these two bullets, shoot my wife's head off and shoot the guy's dick off."

The man takes another look through the scope and hands back one of the bullets.

"What, you don't want to do it?" the clerk asks.

"It's not that," the man replies. "I just think I can do it with one shot!"
