My friend has a lake in his backyard, and it is stocked with largemouth bass and catfish and also has carp and stuff in it. The problem is that he has had fished the lake for a long time and only caught one large mouth bass the whole time. He fishes the lake a lot and he catches cats all the time, but in about 3 years of living there he has only caught 1 bass. So we need some help so we can start catching some big bass, any tips?

We need more information about the climate of the area - if you are in the south the prespawn/spawn is occuring, and up north the prespawn won't begin until late April. You fish the pre/spawn/postspawn with different techniques, so this information is imporant.

It's not how how deep you fish, but how you wiggle your worm.

Most likely anything that swims in that pond with that rig :)

Use light line.

you know what I'm talking about man! SENKOS all the way!

Thread starter: make sure you rig it weightless..just hook and worm.

Heres the drop shot rig fitnessman is talking about: http://www.basspro.com/servlet/catalog.CFPage?&mode=article&objectID=28776&catID=48&cmid=OLBASIC_28776_THUMB_HOME

And here is a video that shows you how to texas rig a senko worm specifically: http://videos.baits.com/Content/prostaff/senko.rm

You can get senkos worms from here: http://yamamoto.baits.com/cgi-bin/order/

or bassproshops.com

... Sunrise. You will be suprised at what will happen. Floating rapalas would work. During the day shallow running crank baits tossed over a weed bed is my choice...

wow, i googled smith lake virginia, and apparently it is good fishing. The bassmaster 2004 was held here. The lake contains striped bass which are usually over 20 pounds. The record caught at the lake was 53 pounds and also has some big catfish with the record at 92 lbs. Any tips for catching some big striped bass? I found a link with some awesome tips http://www.dgif.state.va.us/fishing/lakes/smith_mountain_lake/index.html

Well you have to keep in mind that just because a fish species is stocked into a lake doesn't mean that the species takes hold...

Considering that you can accidentally catch bass, easier than falling off a log, it means that the population in that lake is extreme low... Or simply didn't take hold...

You've got 1 (or possibly more) of 3 situations going on.

1. The Stocking didn't take.
Since large cats become Apex predators it's possible that they took out the Bass population. This is more likely depending on what kind of buffer forage species there is in the lake... If the lake for example has a small population of Shad (A common Southern forage fish) then the Cats are more likely to eat the Bass Fry.)
But really there are a million reasons for a stocking program to fail.

2. It might just be too early in the stocking program to get solid results... A program where they stock Fry instead of breeding stock adults, will take MUCH longer to get going... For instance in MN where they stock Walleye into Lakes with a depleted or lacking population, it often takes 10-15, sometimes 20 years to get a strong population going.

3. Your friend really sucks at Fishing.
I would go down there and cast cranks and carolina rigs around weedlines and points, and see what you get.

I agree with you 100%. Rapalas rule! And every now and then a spinner bait or even a lead head with a rubber worm should work fine. If the bass are hungry, they'll hit almost anything!
