Anyone else make maple syrup? Trees are all tapped and our first cook will either be next weekend or the weekend after, suppose to get up to a foot of snow tonight and colder temps so doubting it will be next weekend....anyway takes a whole weekend so its one looong party! Lots of work but well worth it, not too mention its added exercise :)

Do you make it to sell as well? If so, I'd love to buy some and I'd rather spend the money with someone here than a store.

I bet the whole area smells so good when people are making syrup. And I bet the stores sell out of pancake mix in no time.:D

We do it for fun and don't sell it. We give plenty away to friends and family, mostly those who help us since we do everything the old fashioned way, we carry it out of the woods in 5 gallon buckets (nice extra work on the forearms) and cook it under a fire in a big pan (about 3 feet long, 2 feet wide) no evaporator. We usually have 2 or 3 cooks if the weather is right. Last week was good but yesterday we got snow and the cold followed it so not much is gonna run until the temps get back in the 40's for highs and teens for lows.
And yes the smell is great and the taste even better, I usually have pancakes as my cheat meal.

I have a HUGE maple in my backyard, what is the process from start to finish?
Are there only certain types of maples that you can do this with? Sounds like it could be fun and tasty!

I've done it before but that was many years ago. Good luck with the syrup.
