Just wondering, what type of snakes are native to your state? Are they a problem? I guess for yall city boys, this is not an issue or is it? Anyone here has a snake as a pet?

This is a picture of a Coral that I took at the park two years ago. (Note: Red touches Yellow )

What the deal with red touches yellow, kills a fella? There is a harmless snake that looks just like the coral snake. This is a Scarlet Kingsnake. ( Note: Scarlet, red touches black and no black head )

Although there is no recorded death of a coral snake bite( USA ), it's venom is twice as potent of any rattler. Ask anyone with snake knowledge if they want to mess with a coral snake. These snakes really don't bite people. U pretty much have to stalk them to find them. They will not find you. U pretty much have to mess with them, for them to mess with you.

Many people in fear kill the Scarlet Kingsnake in fear that it's a coral. When I was in Highschool, my friend Chad took his Scarlet Kingsnake to school for a class project. LOL, once he whipped it out, it was crazy. My teacher literally fainted, lol. It was cool as hell. Girls were screaming, other guys were trying to play it off cool, but u could see they were ****ting it. I knew the difference between the to. I knew it was a ScarletKing, not a coral. The school principle called the cops. Officer Ronnie Coleman from the Arllington Police Department came to my school and verify it was a king snake. LOL, it was a trip.

We have about 3 kinds of the Rattlers here in Arkansas and even a version of the coral snake that you showed and then we have the scourage of all fishermen the Cottonmouth. The Cottonmouth is a surly poisionous water brute that gets about 6 feet long. They are big time poisionous and love to end up in the boat with you .

My dad and I had one drop in the boat with us from a tree one time while runnig trot lines..The snake got the boat that day all to himself for a few minutes.

Along with the rattlers and copperheads we also have the Western Cottonmouth. I say we as I still lived in Texas,:( . Here in the part of California I moved to we only have the Mojave Rattlesnake as the only poisonous snake. Where in Arkansas are you at?

I grew up close to Memphis along the mississippi and it's Bayous.

Now I am right on the Arkansas/Oklahoma border..google Hanging Judge Parker and you'll know where I am..

By the way I am very fond of Hanging Judge Parker, any man whose gallows would accommodate 12 bad guys deserves respect.

LOL, I was kidding about officer Ronnie Coleman. It was actually Officer Ramo. He was a friend of my father. He was a former state trooper.

Wanna bet? I've heard of people thathave rattler headbands for their hats have died when they accidentally scratch themselves on the fangs years after the snake was killed.

Yeah, been there, done that. But I will say, rattler cooked over a campfire with some A-1 Sauce rubbed in it is pretty tasty.

Eastern Diamondback Rattlesnakes - I hate those f'ckers. Ran over one with my ex-wifes Ram 2500, hit it with all four tires (yes it was that long and larger in diameter than my quad) and it chased me back into the truck afterward. It got away because he hightailed it for the grass before I could clear the .243 from it's case (management area hunt - no handguns allowed).

Timber Rattlers. Up to six feet +/- and maybe twelve inches in circumference. The pic is one my Mountain Curs bayed in the front yard - it bit all three of them in the face and bamagirl had to learn how to use a Mossberg 500 over the phone. One damn expensive snake and you would think the idiots would learn but it's exactly the opposite - now they dig 'em up and kill them whenever they find one. They haven't been bit since but they have drug home dozens of dead snakes of every stripe and color.

Copperheads.

Coral.

Cottonmouths - lots of 'em. Yuck, about half are aggressive.

NC - Several different species of rattlesnake including Eastern Diamondback, Timber, and pygmy; Cottonmouths (Watermoccasin (sp) are the same species); Copperheads; Corral Snakes. I'm in the middle of the state and copperheads are the only species I've seen up close in the wild. Funny the thread creator mentioned the Scarlet Kingsnake and the corral snake have similar markings on their skin. There is a species of non-poisonous water snake that looks a lot like a copperhead....

Copperhead -

There are too many different species of non-poisonous snakes to mention.... I used to catch garter snakes and black rat snakes (and other non-poisonous species) when I was a kid. The black rat snakes get pretty big at six feet. Hurts like hell when you get bit LOL

We've got tons of garter snakes and bull snakes around our place. They keep the mouse population down.

Around here a Black Rat Snake is the farmers best friend just for keeping the rat population in check....

We have a problem with water moccasins, they are very aggressive around here. Copperheads are pretty timid, you almost have to step on one for it to strike and there aren't many rattlesnakes aroun here, but it depends on it's mood, they usually leave you alone. The water moccasins will chase you like they are territorial.

Something I've learned about coral vs. kingsnake is: Red on yellow, kill a fellow. Red on black, venom lack.

there's a bitchload of snakes around where i live in a kind of hilly out of the way area, being in australia adds to it :S

ran into taipans, black snakes, death adders and so many random brown snakes that it's not funny. but funny thing is never felt endangered by one at all, they just slither away as fast as they can.

found a couple of snakes in the house before too, my mum almost stood on one that had curled up at the bottom of the stairs one day when we accidentally left the door open for awhile. ahaha she screamed and jumped up on the table. it was a carpet snake so it wasn't poisonous but it was funny stuff.

Btw I found ratlers in my yard once in a while when I lived in Scottsdale. Now I live on the Phoenix/Scottsdale border Right next to Camelback Mountain. I have found quite a few in this neighborhood too. LOL its always fun hiking Camelback Mountain because I always wonder of the trails and cross paths with Ratle snakes but I have only once ran into a Ratler on the trails though.

How do you calculate the age of one?

Looking at the segments of a rattle. It's not accurate, but it's a cool thing to go off. Because segments are added at various rates, and because they break off, it is not possible to tell a snake’s age by counting the segments. They get a button every time they shed. They shed anywhere between 1-4 times a year. Lot of people still think this an accurate way of telling a rattlers age. In general, 1 button= 1 shed cycle. The shed cycles per year depend on the snakes life style. If it lives in certain way, their diet, vice versa. The rattler in that pic is at least 3 years of age. Going off the segments in the rattle and the size of the snake. Rattlers could shed up to 4 times a year, but they in general shed 2-3 times a year.

just a regular european adder:

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/d/d5/Vipera_berus_%28Marek_Szczepanek%29.jpg

Their venom is considered as deadly as that of a rattle snake but it can't apply anywhere near as much so it's considered significantly less dangerous. They say a bee is more dangerous statistically due to allergies and what not...
