Man, I can't wait. Turkey season opens in a few weeks here in Tennessee. I have already seen longbeards strutting on the way to work a couple of times. I have also talked with other hunters who have been hearing lots of gobbling.

Geez, I was down in Southern Arkansas the other day and saw 2 flocks just standing on the side of the the highway and they couldn't have been more than a half mile apart..I think if it happens again I am gonna invent rock season cause I think I could have taken one with a good throw.

Everytime I stop to look at a flock they start moving away....LOL!

Im here in PA, and I can't wait for the season to roll around here. My father I own 525 acres that we hunt on. THis year the turkeys are out in the dozens. All during deer season it was nothing to see 80-100 birds a day. SO im pretty pumped to get out there and try to kill a big tom. Good luck to all hunters, be safe and keep in touch when the season rolls around. Have to post pics of the kills.

Hey One More Time, where in TN do you live? I'm in Dickson right now. I'm new to the hunting down here (I'm from IN), but so far it's been great. I've never hunted turkey, but I'm going to try this spring. Do you have any pointers for TN turkey hunting?

I sent you a PM, but I will gladly share some of my experience with TN turkeys. I have hunted them several ways and you kinda have to let the birds tell you what will work. If they are coming to the calls I like to roost one (or put him to bed, as we say) in the evening. The next morning I am there before daylight and get as close as I can (without a flashlight) to the roost tree. This is tricky because there are usually hens, jakes, and sometimes more gobblers roosted around. But by moving without a flashlight it helps because they really don't know what you are (deer walk by in the night too). After getting as close as possible (maybe within 100 yards) I setup my decoys, plop down next to a tree a wait. I can not emphasize this part more.... at any time, no matter which of these methods you choose, be as STILL as possible ALL them time. I don't care if your butt has gone to sleep and you are dying to move....DON'T. I read that a turkey can detect the blink of an eye at 40 yards.... I disagree with that... I think they can detect it at 100 yards ...LOL! Anyway, once you start hearing the gobbler spit and drum call to him softly.... No response... cut to him... he should gobble. Keep calling to him and keep him fired up. If all goes well he will land right on top or just shy of your decoys so have them about 20 or so yards in front of you. Or you can just wait until they come off of roost, get in front of them, and try to call him in. I prefer the roost hunt, because it is non-stop action and sometimes he will fly down before his hens (which is great for you). Plus if you are close enough you can see him strutting in the tree. You can also see how he is responding to the call.

The last way is a little boring but if they are "running" from the call. Just stop calling, get in front of them, and wait. If you don't have any luck, odds are they will do the same thing the next morning so be there waiting, hid and quiet.

Thats just the other hunters who are practicing their turkey call--LOl--I know they have duck calls....my dad used to practice--he turkey hunts as well--I believe he has a turkey call---anyway--good luck!

You should try turkey hunting with him.....just one successful hunt and you are hooked (and by successful I mean just working a gobbler not necessarily bagging him).
