Hunting With Guns - Fair?

Hey all.

Well this is something I think would bring up a good disscussion. Do you think hunting with guns is fair? Really all you have to do is point and click. What is the challenege in that? Sure, hunting brids takes skill but that's mainly because they are small and fly around pretty fast. But say a deer or a bear? They are HUGE, how can you miss? Where is the fairness? Yes, if you handed someone a gun and told him to go shoot a deer he obvioiusy is not gonna do so good the first few times but after a few times and some target practise then what? What is so great about killing a deer with a gun or any big animal that doesn't even know your there?

Now trying to kill one with a knife or some kind of small weapon, now that takes skill, and balls.

Camo, scent, scouting areas, wind direction, wind speed, etc.....Not just any Jo Blo can walk out into the woods with a rifle and stumble upon a trophy.

I meant to say any type of game. IE deer, duck, goose, moose, etc.

If it was so easy then I would have not gone for 8 years without getting a deer.

Exactly right!! Even though I harvest the numbers I do, I don't just walk out the back door, point the rifle or bow and get one. I live by some simple rules:


1 I won't wound an animal. If I can't get a good head or spinal shot, he lives to fight another day! This rule probably costs me 20 or so deer every year. This rule alone might save a humans life as well. I've seen what not knowing what your target is and I'll tell you this, it is not pretty.

2 I will not hunt for trophys and I won't allow it to happen on the farms.If I catch you doing it and you're out, PERIOD!! I'm very selective of whom I will let hunt with me.

3 I selectively harvest deer, mostly does as they are what cause the most damage to the crops. I've killed 3 bucks this year and they were all spikes or 3-4 pointers, good eating sizes.

Here in Maryland there are more deer here now than in 1900. I have 87 crop damage permits and I still have 20 more to fill. It's sad in a way that we have removed their habitat, but I also look at them as food. I donate about 80% of what I kill a year to soup kitchens and needy familys here in the county I live in.

I completely agree with what greenfeather said. However, I choose not to hunt with a gun for multiple reasons; non of which are because its easy.

Hunting does seem tough and rewarding (I just target shoot), but my hat definitely goes off to those who bowhunt or take a flintlock into the woods on a rainy day.

Ummm I never thought about whether it was fair or not. I guess because while growing-up hunting provided much of the meat we ate. Fact is I had to aquire a taste for beef because I was used to deer. The opening of the deer hunt was a big deal in my family. Even my mom had a rifle and would get a deer.

I mean it was great fun but I also knew it was important to our family. I was raised on a farm and money was tight. So one of the things that made ends meet was hunting.

Also keep in mind I didn't think much about it growing up. Cause most of my friends dads hunted and it was just alot of fun. I also think it was pretty awesome that my mom would go out. I mean it's not like we were the Foxworthys or something. My mom was really a classy lady, that wasn't afraid to shoot a gun.

Nowadays blackpowder hunting isn't that much more difficult than regular rifle. My hats off to bowhunters though. Thems in a whole different league.

I hunt cape buffalo with my bare hands. I did a bit of muay thai because I had to work on my stand up because they have great takedown defence

Is it fair when a lion uses it's claws and teeth to take down a defenseless antelope? No, it's survival of the fittest. You can bet that if the lion could, it would be using a rifle.

Ha, cute quote. Come deer opener though those deer know whats going on. Opening morning is the best time by far to get something. After that the deer tend to bed down and wait it out. Trophy bucks usually turn nocturnel as well to elude hunters.

Idon't call it fair I call it putting meat on the table. I do enjoy do it but as far as sport or anything like that I don't think it is. Just meat.

Yeah, just about every morning and evening I could open my patio door and shoot 3 or 4 deer.

That's why I need a bow. Silent and deadly, from my living room.:D

IMHO, No matter what anyone thinks.... whatever you hunt (gun, bow, whatever) with the animal always has the advantage.

Whats it matter you still get some muscle building protien either way! Thats what I did on my Buck on Nov, 16, 2005. I had a tag for my property. So I saw this MONSTER BUCK running down the road my are house, I followed him till he went onto are property and shot him with my 30-30. It was easy but thats the advantage of owning a lot of land the deer get tame because no one messes with them around there, except me during hunting season.

Admittedly, I don't know much about hunting and this is probably a stupid question; But I always thought the purpose was to try to get the biggest deer you can? At least that's what I've always gathered from talking to people who do hunt.

Or from your post I gather you are curbing the population of the deer. In general, is it normal for people to try to get the trophy deer?

My uncle shot a huge ass deer. Me being a Hawaii boy tripped out when I saw it. It was a four by four and scored a 186 on boone and crockett I think. I know its antlers were the span of my arms almost.

My hats off to the bow hunters as well. Have taken alot of deer with a gun but that damn bow still hasn't done me right. Someday it will. Be the happiest hunting day of my life.

On the contrary, I think they're always playing. They just don't always know who they're playing against.

And I've seen some animals that definitely know what's up. Driving down a road, we saw this coyote slowly trotting through a field(wide open field, broad daylight!), looking back at us. As soon as we stopped, he took off running. We started to move again and he stops to watch us. We stop and he takes off running. I bet he's been shot at from a pick-up before...
