Hey everyone,

Im starting to prepare for my first show in June and I needed some advice regarding fat supplementation. My trainer does not allow nut butters, nuts, avocados etc in the diet when cutting. However, I can take fat supplementation in the form of flaxoil/fishoil etc.

My question is how much fat should I be looking for daily when cutting? Off season I try to maintain my fat at least at 20-25% of my intake. I have seen some articles that say I should or could be as low as 15% fat while cutting. Should I maintain 20% while cutting or drop it lower? Should I preferably use flaxoil or fishoil? And can I use flaxmeal as well or is oil preferred? My trainer also does not do no carb for cuts, although carbs are adjusted depending on how I am dropping fat, but she doesnt like to go to low carb. Does this make a difference regarding my fat intake also. Currently my diet is about 40p-40c-20f or so. I start my comp diet at 12 weeks out. Should I aim for my protien to be higher than my carbs in general?

What is everyones feeling regarding CLA and should I continue to take that? I have taken it regularly for about the last 5 months or so.

Thanks so much

Scarl3tbutt3rfly,
I won't be the only one to tell you this but as far as your training goes you should listen to your trainer. Stick with whatever she says and follow that religiously. You will porbably get a lot of advice and it is good to get other opinions but you can do more damage by doing a bunch of different things at once. Take what she says for your first show and then make changes from there for upcoming shows.

For me I take CLA, Sasamine oil, and just started taking DCP. I am following the cut diet that was written by the guys at Scivation and it was working great for me. You may want to check it out gives you a great baseline to at least have an idea of something else that may work for you with your next show. It can be downloaded at www.cutdiet.com and it is a free PDF. As long as you get your essential fats in it really doesn't matter what you get them with as long as they are with in the amount you are allowing for your diet.

Your question about your breakdown of 40-40-20 looks about right to me, if you stop making progress you will want to cut down your carbs by say 5%, and fats after that. Really you will begin to cutting calories the closer you get to the show date and it will be important that you are cutting the right calories "IE Carbs, and Fats"

I hope some of this helps, I am also starting pre-contest for a July show and these are the things I have been doing good luck in your show.

I plan on doing exactly as my trainer instructs, Im just concerned with my fat supplementation and where I should have my fat percentages at? Or should I not worry about that at all maybe? I agree that this first show is more a learning process than anything.

I currently take 4 Omega3 fish oil tablets a day and 3 CLA tablets. Is this sufficient? It amounts to about 7 grams of fat, in addition to what I get from my diet each day. Offhand I believe it is 320mg per Omega3? (Im at work so I cant remember for sure, but pretty sure).

Depending on your diet and how you have it broken down you should be getting around 15 grams of fat per meal. For example my diet currently I have 42g of protein per meal, Carbs 15g, and fats 15g. I eat 6 meals a day and every third day I do a carb load meal for my last meal of that day. On the carb day I eat 120g of carbs, and 30g of fat. In this meal there is no protein and also no liquid meaning I don't drink any water 60 minutes before or after the intake of this meal. This prevents me from getting bloated. Also this break down is for 2500 cal diet.

How many grams are all your food breaking down to give me the counts of your Protein, carbs, and fats for a whole day. Also what is your calorie intake for a day. There is some math to do to figure if you are hitting the right numbers. Like I said previously 40 40 20 sounds about right to start with but once you start to see your weight loss slowing down and BF not dropping you need to start cutting some out of your carbs and fats. Keep your protein highest.

Also I have found taking the CLA after food seems to work better for me, 3 caps sounds right for a female, I take 6 and you should be about half of me. I also take Omega 3 but I only use 2 because mine has a higher fat count. Make sure you take these into count with your diet I know you said you did, but this is where I made my first mistake and when I cut some of my good fats from pills I saw a beigger drop in weight and BF.
