Yes this member understands what hunting is about. Anyone who considers themselves a sportsman does.
Refrain from such comments or leave.
This is a new world here for bb.com. Anyone abusing animals (killing and not eating) would be asked to leave this forum.
Consider this a warning. This young man comes from a fine family who has instilled proper hunting ethics in him.

No you did not. Killing is for food and sport.
Just because 99% of the general forums by their meat "pre killed" Does not mean someone did not have to do it.
I take my fair share of fish and game. Respect for what these creatures give myself and my family..Deserves the utmost respect.

fitnessman: thanks. The WSB are one of the most prized if not the most prized fish in california to hunt. They are very elusive and many divers go a couple years before they learn to successfully hunt them. Being at the right place where these pelagic fish come in is one thing. Not blowing bubbles, making noises, etc is another. The fish is AWESOME!!!! Better than striped bass. I really like Grouper...Here's one from a recent trip to Mexico. Shot him in 45 feet of water. More people have died to grouper than any other fish due to shallow water blackout. Groupers after you shoot them will HOLE UP, in other words, go under rocks. So getting them out is very difficult and consumes a lot of oxygen.
Luckily I stoned this fish by breaking its spine. He died on impact pretty much.

I got him on 1/2 a tuna head on 80 lb Ande. I have the EXACT rig used by Quint in Jaws, lol!! Sharkin' is an addiction with me. It's a blast to bring them in, tag them and send them on their way. I've caught 500 lb Hammerheads and 700 lb Tigers. In fact, the night after I got that one my buddy got a 900 lb tiger. That was a real treat to get in, lol!! if you think you're in shape, hook up to one of those behemouths, 5 hours of cardio, deadlifts and good mornings. I just snapped a pic of the rod I used for him. A 1975 Fenwick 100 lb class rod with a Penn Senator 12/0 reel. I sold my 16/0 last year and I'm looking for a 20/0 on Ebay if one ever shows up, they're VERY rare rods.

IMO..Leave Wal-Mart out.
If you are looking for a good multi species rod I would go with an IM-7 Graphite @ 6'. Berkley has some good ones in the 50 buck range. I would pair that up with a decent spinning real in the 50-60 dollar range..I like Diawa for spinning reals.
Sounds pricey I know..For someone just starting out...But a rig along these price lines will give you years of dependable service.
Cheap gear equals frustration in my book...Then again. You are talking to the guy who just put out 400..for a reel

Hey fitnessman, ever try Patoka Lake in southern Indiana? That's where my buddy and I chase the crappie - excuse me- catch the crappie. It's not uncommon for us to boat several in the 14-15 in range. We throw back the 11-12 in ones, unless it's a rare bad day/night. They held the Crappie USA Classic there last September. It was funny because they couldn't find any decent size crappie, and my buddy sat by the marina all day a filled his livewell with good sizes. I've got some pics, so I'll have to dig them up and post them tonight.
EDIT: Never mind on the pics. My scanner is screwed up. Once I figure out what's wrong I'll get 'em up here though.

You should start a thread like "Just learning how to freshwater fish, and looking for some advice." Then we can hit you up with all kinds of tips and tricks to help beat the learning curve without having to segway this thread... And it makes for a good reference for other guys who are just getting into the sport.

Above is a pool test of a 26 2/3 foot shot with a speargun in the pool. It is me at night with my buddy who trusts my aim to the side of the target. Normally we try to get within 5-15 feet of the fish which many times can be VERY VERY difficult. Fishing pressure and different species such as Calico Bass in California are very skittish. Same with the White Seabass.

http://i51.photobucket.com/albums/f361/EEZerik/lobster_1.jpg
This is a massive 8lb lobster I found off the shores of pv, california. PV is a beautiful area but can be dangerous climbing down the hills as they can be very rocky. Many houses are on a cliff and the options are to: NOT DIVE or GO DOWN steep cliffs. I think I'll pick the latter!
How do you spearfish? I know of people who do it on Scuba. Some people think that this is "unfair" and unsportsmanlike. I think it's fine but I just choose not to do it.
What I do is I'll stay on the surface and depending on what type of fish I'm after, adjust. For example, some fish you can go and they'll come up to you (stupid fish) and other fish there's no way you'll get them unless you can dive to 90 feet and hold your breath 2 minutes. To have a 2 minute underwater bottom time you need to be able to hold your breath probably 4 minutes on land. My buddy who is a world class spearfisher can hold it for 7 minutes.
(some fish you can bring closer to you with LONG bottom times). In other words, You'll breathe up good (few minutes - between 1-4) and you'll go to the very bottom. You'll stay still or move slowly. Sometimes throwing sand is a good technique to bring fish in closer. They think something is feeding on the bottom and most fish are very curious. But in highly pressured areas, the fish are *smarter* so you need to go deeper and stay down longer. That's where blacking out can come in. When you come up to the surface usually at around 15 feet it acts like a vacuum and sucks air out of you. Most people who black out black out at 15 feet. Keep in mind that for every 30 feet down you go, your lungs compress by a factor of 2 I believe. So your lung capacity at 90 feet is 1/8TH of what it is at the surface.
I know some divers who will go many times without shooting a single fish. On the other hand there's some who always want their limit. if I'm having a BBQ or something, I'll shoot different species to give variety and not place pressure on any particular fish. I'll try and hit up different spots so a specific area never gets too much pressure. Maybe I just don't want the fish to get too smart :)
Any other questions, feel free to ask. My 3rd year of college (4th year now) I bought a speargun from sumora.com, really loved it, and since it's a hobby I decided to buy half of a spearfishing company. So now that's what I do on the side of school. It's something I really enjoy and doesn't feel like a job. Customers call me all the time to ask me of my latest fishing adventures and I am always interested to hear of theirs.
My website is www.sumora.com and the part about it I get the most satisfaction from is from reading the Dive reports. http://www.sumora.com/reports.php Big wahoos, Big Groupers, sailfish, and ...SHARKS!!!!!!! I'm not here to sell you my stuff. Just here as a sportsman!!!But I enjoy reading about a good hunt so click on the links, browse around, and if you have questions about how to hunt or how I started the biz, just ask.
Pretty scary sometimes what you see in the water. It's such a challenging sport both physically and mentally, but it's definitely rewarding. You're always after something bigger or tastier, and when you finally land it after hundreds of hours of searching and diving, the feeling is unbelievable.

I'm glad I can share my experiences. The way I got started in spearfishing was, I went to Catalina, an island 26 miles offshore Southern California with my buddy Matt. At the time, he had been scuba diving for at least 5 years and his dad and his dad's friend went there to scuba dive. We hopped on the boat and went fishing. At the time, about 6 years ago, I stunk at fishing and when the dad's friend came up with some nice fish caught on a speargun, I was INSTANTLY interested. I went to get a scuba certification that summer. Later, I read more and more about spearfishing and how people dive to incredible depths while freediving, and that added another aspect to the challenge.
One day I was down about 45 feet and pulled the trigger on a "Cabezon," which is very territorial, blends in very well with the rocks, and...is VERY TASTY!!
Because of their territorial nature they won't move until you get very very close to them. The tough part is finding them. I shot one 30 minutes earlier that day so I thought nothing of it. But since the spear has quite a bit of power, and because the fish camouflages with the rocks, I shot and my spearshaft stuck into the rocks. I didn't get a killshot on the fish (spine or brain) and it went ballistic. It almost tore itself off the spearshaft with its hard fightand I hate losing a fish (don't want it to die for nothing) so I immediately grabbed it with my hand. I wanted to secure it and go get some much needed air. Its fin-spines GOT ME. My hand felt like it was submersed in boiling water. It wasn't a Cabezon - it was a scorpionfish. Owww.
I threw up 2 hours later, was dizzy and felt sick for another day.
Luckily I haven't seen too many scary things. Sometimes being deep and in crappy visibility is enough to give you a good scare, since Sharks usually attack when they don't know what you are. They think you're a sea lion until they bite, that's why people usually lose a leg but aren't swallowed whole, unlike sealions which can grow to be over 500 pounds. I've seen 6 ft soupfin sharks.

Glad to see you fish on lake erie, I do too. Where do you fish out of?

Wow, that is quite an adventure story! I bet you have tons more. Reading your experiences has really inspired me to pursue my long-time interest in fishing. Since I've been young, I've always enjoyed fishing but the farthest I done was fishing at the local pond and a few years ago, going out to Mission Bay in San Diego to fish for bass. I caught 3 sand bass or something. It was my first time on a boat and actually going out to sea fishing - it was a really fun experience. That was years ago, and I've yet to go fishing since. I'm from San Diego but @ Cal now for school. I see you're from OC. SO CAL OWNS!

Finally got my scanner to work, but I couldn't find the crappie pics. Wife probably put 'em in a scrap book somewhere. I did find a pic of the spike I took opening day of the '05 Tennessee muzzleloader season. It weighed in around 130. I ended up giving this one to a classmate with a large family.

My deer this season. Lol I got him with a muzzleloader that I had never shot before. Thank god it was on. I got him in the back on the run the in the neck. I got 2 other small does but I didn't waste film on them. Good meat. Still got a couple packeges in the freezer.

That deer was the first I had taken with a muzzleloader. I got the gun on sale at Cabela's for 89.99 (no ****). I figured it would be good enough to see how I liked it. I put a 4X scope on it, and it shoots a 1/2" 3 shot CCB group at 50 yards using 2 50gr 777 pellets, Remington 209 primers, and 250gr Hornady sabots (the gun is .50 cal). I don't guess that's too bad for an 89.99 gun!
Interesting story behind the deer though. I hunt on the ground and usually use a gillie for concealment. I cover the gun as well. There was a lot of action in the same valley where I was hunting, and I never saw the usual deer that always came around. I was really hoping for the extremely large doe that I estimated to be around 180lbs. Nothing was moving, so I began calling. After about an hour, this guy came cruising in, and I decided to take him because he wasn't bad size for his age. I was next to a pond, and he walked up and started drinking. I had to move around to my left a full 90 degrees and raise up a little (all in full view) to get my shot. I double-lunged him, and here if he didn't jump straight into the pond. He made it to the middle and gave out. Of all the places... Well obviously, I made the very cold wade (up to my armpits) to get him out. I was singing soprano for a little while after that. The air temp wasn't too cold, but that water was freezing! The things we will do for a deer...

Here's what it's all about right here. We were fishing at a small pond in New Bern N.C. My youngest son(8) and daughter(9) must have caught about 30 bluegill between them. They did everything from ripping worms in half, baiting their own hooks, casting and taking fish without any help from the old man.

44" Redfish from the shore. Caught past 3rd sandbar, approximately 200 yards out. 1/2 of a 1 lb mullet on a 14/0 circle hook. 12'6" surfrod, 25 lb line. Hell of a fight, about 20 minutes, especially on a long rod like that.

Big unit, that's a damned nice red. I've only gotten 1 that size about 5 years ago off Hatterass. My dad got a 49" red this fall, his biggest yet on The Point.I'd rather have an 18"-24" red to eat though, I don't care for the taste of them after they get over 24". Now harvesting the large ones is illegal in NC.

Still not the same... A half fillet from a 28" fish doesn't taste as good, or have the tight texture as say a 14" fish...
Not to mention that 28" is a prime breeder...
Always best to put those girls back, and let them make a new generation.

A lot of Minnesotan's complain about our Walleye slot rules on the big lakes... But the sheer volume of strong survivable off spring of those monster that get put back, has made for droves and droves of great eater sized fish year after year.

Yep, pisses me off when people eat 24+inch walleye. Throw them back there are plent of smaller walleye that taste better. If you want to keep a mounter make sure it is huge.

Even then... A replica, is cheaper, has a longer wall life, has faster production turn around, and if you've got the right guy doing the work, they even look better!
But Budweiser, in MN they teach us all these little ins and outs of conservation, that you don't really get anywhere else...
Well... California, the time I spent there, they're about as much emphasis on "Conservation education" as we do.
Back in the 60's and 70's the old timers around here raped and pillaged the game resources, so we're kind of living in a time when the mistakes have been learned from, and the benefits are being seen.
Hell the Walleye Stripping is starting to turn into a spectator sport these days!

I hear ya... I ran into a similar issue with a 28" last year...
One study I read claims that 20% of Walleye caught over 22 inches do not survive for more than 24 hours after release...
However this figure was also for Summer staging, where Walleye are deep, and the threat to the Air Bladder is high, if the angler "Horses" the fish up... So I'm sure that Jacks that percentage WAY up...

I guess the Stripping going on up at Pine River, pulled in a 36.5" Walleye out yesterday!

Yeah I'm sure that I'll have that problem this weekend with trout, especially if I use nightcrawlers; seems like they want to swallow it whole and then you have a mess trying to get it out w/out killing them.
But this is a debate for another thread.

As far as hunting goes both can be equally effective if they are trained correctly. I mainly wanted a female because the male has to mark his territory everywhere and piss on everything!

The next time you have the misfortune of handling a scorpionfish of any sort other than the Stone fish soak whatever part was injected in hot water. The hotter the better to denature the venom. I was working on a Lionfish breeding program about 5 years ago and got zapped a few times. If you're unfortunate enough to tangle with a stonefish, nice knowin' ya!! Here's an article on the deadly stonefish.

The technical,
The shot was just over 200 yards with a 30-06 with scope and a 180 gain bullet, location was northern Alberta on October 31, 2006 the animal is a white tail deer with a nice 4x4 rack, after the animal was cleaned skinned with the head and hooves off he weighed in at 110 lbs on the butchers scale,

wow nice spread on that buck,we rarely have deer down here that spread that wide, the woods are to thick,i guess it keeps them from reaching full potential, when we do have big bucks the racks are usually all notty and deformed looking non typicals.

There aren't too many types of really huge fish to catch in the inshore areas off So Cal, if you're lucky maybe a yellowtail or white seabass, they might get up into the 20-40 lb range....but most of the really big beasts are well offshore and out of kayak range. So I like to go for variety. I keep track of every species Ive caught and like to keep adding new fish to my list.
So being as it's so slow in the office today, July 3rd, here are a few random fish pics I have, maybe some fish you havent seen before. Enjoy.

Well it's not like I wasnt warned, 2 boats and the kid at the bait barge said it had been real slow. I had come all the way down from LA, so I launched anyway, went away from Oceanside towards the nuke plant at San Onofre. It was slow going, and I got pounded from the combination of big swell and piled up chop. This first picture I dont know if you can really tell, that's a massive wall of water and you are riding up from the trough about halfway up, the big swells that came in sets, and when you were between sets of swells it was pummeling chop which you can get a better sense of in the second shot.
http://i13.tinypic.com/63jw1s8.jpg
Got some live bait, sardines, queenfish, macks, but it was hard keeping them on the bottom because the boats vertical amplitude was so great on account of the swell. The jigs and swimbaits were all ignored, regardless of pattern or depth. Picked up a 4 ft 20 lb shovelnose guitarfish on a sardine, it did a few nice runs. These fish fight so hard with that flat broad head and sharks body they have all kinds of leverage against you. Finally wore each other out, gaffed it, snapped these pics, then cut off the tail section to take home.

Finally wore each other out, gaffed it, snapped these pics, then cut off the tail section to take home.

Sorry, I'm very ignorant when it comes to fishes/fishing. What is the name of this fish? Looks like a mini shark.
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y290/Rollux/DavidShark.jpg
I think Super David ID'd that as a bronze whaler shark. And although it looks like it in this photo, it aint mini, photo was taken from some distance above it. I think it's in the 4-6 foot range.
Sorry Bobby Hill! I forgot to come back in here and check for posts!

Must be very similar! Its from the same family! Redfin Perch.
That one was just a baby..but as they get older the red around the fins become much brighter.
The fisheries department here consider them a pest and it's actually ilegal to realease them! it's a good thing they taste pretty good! hehe

Yeah they are kind of similar arent they. Shortfin corvs only have two sharp fangs that come down from the roof of the mouth, so they're pretty easy to handle. Tailors, we call them bluefish here, as you know have a mouthful of sharp teeth and lots of east coast fisherman have been bitten by them. My Dad has a nice scar on his ring finger from one that bit him years ago.

Thanks, man. I'm catch and release 95% of the time. Those sanddabs are really good pan fried whole (like dover sole or flounder).....but most of the time I just take a photo and throw it back. Sandbass are good for fish tacos. Sharks and barracuda I dont eat, but those shovelnoses are really good though, just lop off the tail and the meat makes great kabobs, tastes like thresher shark/swordfish.

I practice catch and release too I mainly enjoy just the time spent on the lake the thrill of the fight and getting a nice pic of the catch before I let them go to grow and produce more fish for me to catch.
