Some of the locales confuse me.. cause some call them alligator gar or long nose gar or buffalo gar. Most of the gar I've seen have those short snouts,, but here around the damn you find lots of different kinds. I know there all some sort of gar and nobody around here has died from eating yet.. so I guess were good. :o LOL

No that's a longnose (maybe a hybrid?). The gator snout will be almost as wide as it's body. (edit, I may retract that, even with the skinny snout it looks terribly like a gator gar to me)

Here's a gator:

That duck may have spooked it too. Where are you at? Those are nice looking Mallards... All the ducks left Texas a LONG time ago heading back up North. I wish they'd stick around longer.

Lots of wintering birds stayed North this year due to the drought conditions we had down here, there just wasn't much water.

I have a hard time killing cute critters too, but if you feed her the bacon wrapped duck prior to telling her that you killed it all will be good. She will be woo'd by the flavor of the goodness.

Was able to get into my honey hole, maybe a 20 yard x 15 yard hole. Water was high so i knew the fish would be in this hole.
My brother caught 4 small walleye before hitting this 17.5" smallmouth..

Then I landed this bad boy, 25.5" walleye

got both these boys out of the same hole about 20 minutes apart, only stayed out about 2 hours

I was coyote squeelin' when I ran into this fella. Jumped him from the timber. He tried to run off and I shot him in back of the head at @ 80 yds. with a 75g v-max. (1 shot) . I filled both my elk tags last year. My buddy shot his cow elk the next day a mile from where I shot my bull. I had to go back to the kill site since I left behind my thermos and saw blade. A mile drag down hill in the snow and into the back of my truck whole... It doesn't get any better. This bull was @ 5 to 6 yrs old. He green scored 338. My mom is using the rack to hang coats at her house since there is no room at mine.

I want a moose myself...after 15 years I hope to draw. It won't happen this year though...Where I elk hunt the moose aren't afraid and getting within 100 yards is very easy.
I am always happy with a cow elk and I usually draw for a damage hunt starting mid August. It's easy meat and target practice out in the alfalfa fields.
The deer where I live are like shooting gophers....they're everywhere. I pretty much hunt for the table now. Horns are a bonus if I put forth the effort.

What's a damage hunt, X?

X-ring
06-08-2012, 04:46 PM
Damage hunts are put on by FWP on ranches that have too many animals. You sign up online and any tag is vallid. I sign up for those on the first day and minute you can sign up online. I'm 5 for 5 so far in the district I hunt in. The season opens up a month early for ya and goes clear into Feb. You have specific dates and times to check in at the ranches to hunt on. The tags are mostly antlerless elk/ deer. I put meat in the freezer w/ those tags/ opportunities very easily.

Can't believe this thread hasn't been bumped in the last month or so, archery elk season just finished up here in CO.

I got this guy on the last weekend, bugled him in and got him at around 25-30 yd.
Got at least 1 lung, just sliced the heart, and found the end of my arrow buried in his liver. He only went about 30 yd. before he dropped, and it was all of 150yd. to the jeep trail (all down hill). Will probably be the easiest elk extraction I'll ever have.

http://i620.photobucket.com/albums/tt284/fitstick/elk2.jpg

Shot him with an old Hoyt Raptor 80lb bow w/ G5 Montec broadhead.

Caught it on heavy gear! got a tld50lrs loaded with 80lb braid. Yeah we used the easterly winds and balloons filled with helium to float big baits out into good water.
Thats just an optical illusion, it is a ballon but its not in my pocket..they are very big balloons.
We use really heavy gear because there are tons of sharks around...if you waste any time you lose your fish to the sharks. Even if you dont waste time you still lose fish to sharks.

Those are some damn nice Kings man. You pop them out into meatballs? Seems to be popular with Kings here so was curious how yall prep them over there. I fought something heavy on my tyr50lrs this weekend but the hook pulled after about 10 minutes. Had me down to about half a spool and was probably a $15k shark. Wife took 1st in Women's though so we still scored. Wall of text report is up in it's own thread here in the OR forum.

kings? na spanish mackeral. Their flesh rates very highly over here. we just fillet them and freeze it to bring it home. Good as plain fillets or curry or whatever.
Almost anything thats going to get you down to half a spool on a reel like that is almost definatly a shark. In australia anyway ...unless your talking marlin

hmm strange..must be different fish with same name?
The shark mackeral around here are sort of a bit spotty and they don't get as big either, biggest they would get is about 13kg but the average is really more like 5 or 6kg.
The spanish mackeral here have been caught over 35kg

Australia is such a crazy country. No wonder they used to sent criminals there; that place is bananas. BRB most dangerous everything in the world on one isolated chunk of land, and giant fish to boot. Pretty sure the biggest fish I've ever seen caught was my dad's ~36" Northern Pike.
