I can't count the amount of times I have been Crappie fishing on a local muskie lake (rated #1 by INfisherman many times for Muskie) and one of the bad boys take a chunk of the Crappie.

As soon as the Muskie sees you...It opens it's mouth and it is gone.

Nah, Muskie really need to be C&R. I feel we should allow them to reach the full predator level.

I've seen some monsters in SA, 4-500 lbers in the Amazon and Rio Orinoco. The Juanaco believe they are demons and won't eat them. You should have seen the look on my face when I dragged a 100 lber back to camp one night, the cheiftain was not amused!!:mad: How the hell was I supposed to know, lol!!

Large Musky are becoming increasingly hard to find (From what I've read.) At they're size they'd be just gnarled meat anyway... There a dozen other types of fish out there that are better to eat... Best to CPR them.

IMO, Musky is a pure sport fish...

I've decided finally after toiling around with the idea for the last 2 years that this is the year I spend July and August, away from the doldrums of chasing deep water Walleye, and start Hunting Musky.

(Hell I'm already practicing with my new baitcaster in the backyard, and I pick up my New Musky Rod this weekend.)

About 50 years ago, a train hauling corn derailed, and they never got it out of the water. They say there's catfish so big in there that they can't get out of the train cars now.

And I know a few of the divers for the Sheriff's Department, and they say there's some at the base of the dam so large, they'll never dive down there again. One of them told me he saw an eye over 6 inches in diameter, and he almost crapped his wetsuit.

yeah, man catfish can become friggin monsters. there are some cats up in a lake on my grandparents property, but the biggest i ever saw was around 18 inches or so. what's crazy are those guys who go noodling and catch monster cats with their barehands.

you're crazy dude. i saw an episode of "dirty jobs" (good show btw) and the host, Mike, had to go noodling with some guys in Oklahoma (I think it was Ok.). They were saying how a bunch of guys they know have lost fingers, arms, some even lost their lives. You never know what's down there, snappers, snakes, loch ness monsters, big jugs of cell-tech ;)

Pike are an anytime, anywhere kind of fish... Pike are the super aggressive predators, that will snap at anything that moves and can be found all over a lake...

I would check your state's DNR website... Many states list their lakes and the population samples... From there you can find a good pike lake.

Musky Fishing however... I'm just taking up Musky Fishing this year as a true persuit rather than a stupid little toil.

Musky are the Pike's Big Brother. (Record Musky is 69")

While they too are also uber aggressive, they are MUCH more rare, and are called "The Fish of a Ten-Thousand casts." Musky aren't so much "Fished" as they are Hunted. Hence the name of the magazine "Musky Hunter."

Musky Hunting is like it's own fishing cult... Musky Hunters are the Crazy NFL linebackers of the Freshwater Fishing world.

After 5 years of catching 80-100 pike per year, all over the size spectrum, and some Musky Toiling when I was bored on Musky Waters... I "THINK" I'm probably ready to graduate up into Musky Hunting, so I'm taking the plunge this year.

Personally if I were you, I'd start with Pike... If you do want to really get onto the Musky Hunting, then I would definitely hire a guide on a reputeable Musky lake...

The last thing you want to do is go fishing for a Musky, when you're not really sure what you're doing, and then hook into a 4 foot angry fanged beast of a fish, try to lug it into the boat, HOT, not even having the landing tools, let alone the tools to unhook and safely release the bastard... And then getting sliced like Edward Scissor hands in a masturbation video.

I've never personally been hurt by a Pike, but I see at least 5 Pike related injurys a year by people who were sloppy with handling a big pike. Lucky only one has needed stitches. (AKA there's more that's sharp and dangerous on them than just those rows of fangs!)

If you're dead set on Musky Fishing, I hear that Early October is the hottest time for them... And of course Early June when they're in Post-Spawn is when they're most docile.

When in doubt, head to Canada.

When I was younger, we used to sit out on my Buddy's Family Pontoon, on the 4th of July and launch bottle rockets into the water... They would go off with a HUGE BOOM! (Water transfering sound so much better than air and all.)

So we got a little ingenius... You know how you can buy those fruity shots in a testtube... Well they were all the rage at the time, and one of my Friends who was with us had a 12 pack of the damn things.

I also noticed that the off brand of M80's that we had was about the same diameter as the mouth of the TT...

So I came up with the idea of taking the M80... Duct tape it to a rock... Tape a Duct Tape Rim seal onto the TT... Light the M80, quickly slide the TT over the wick area, quick seal the tape down for good measure and drop the rock.

The majority of the times it went off when it was only like 4 feet deep...

But a couple of them had longer and slower burning wicks, and would get deeper for a BIG BOOM...

We had one, it must have almost snuffed out on the way down because we were sure something went wrong with it... Well it must have made it all the way to the bottom, and an ember must have kept it alive, or there must have been just enough oxygen... Because like a minute later there was this big "Ping" and a fat air bubble that slowly rose up...

2-3 minutes later a bull head floated up to the surface and flailed around on it's side for like 10 minutes, then it proceded back down. So there must be some kind of validity to the old Dynamite idea.

Yeah, there's validity. The explosion goes through the water as an actual cuncussive force, or shockwave.

Just like depth charges don't have to actually hit a submarine to damage it.

So Ironically when we get back to the bait shop to get its weight, they come out and measure it and it ends up being the state record. If it would of swim away when we tried releasing it, never would of knew it was the record. 8lb test line...... mepps minnow

And now he has turned into one of those muskie guys who only want to fish for them and they buy every bait known to man. I swear the guys got like over a grand just in fishing baits.

From what I've heard you don't want a fight with a Musky to exceed 15 minutes as the absolute max... Apparently they fight with every last bit of fury they can muster. And will in some cases fight to the death. Hell they say that 90% of Musky aren't even afraid of boats!

Biggest Dichotomy I've ever had between line and Fish was when I was Pan fishing using an Ultralight with 2 pound test, just for the fun of a fight with Sun Fish... And then I ended up hitting a 17 inch 3.1 pound Large Mouth Bass.
