what are the best exercises to do without a calve machine?

single leg stair raises with one dumbbell
single leg wall presses (hands on wall, leg out behind you, isometric type calf raise)

Getting on a leg press and press it as far as it can go up, but don't take out the thing that holds it up.

Standing calf raises with barbell or with a dumbell. Sitting calf raises. Sit on a bench, put your feet on a block and put heavy weight plates on you upper tighs.

I just figured out a great way to work calves buy using the leg extention attach on my bench.

I just put a bunch of blocks under my feet and it acts almost exactly like a seated calf machine.

Damn right, no more spinal compression for me :D

Damn - that's not a bad idea. I just bought a seated calf machine (about $120) about 2 months ago, and it's great, but that's smart.

Lately, I use the leg extension attachment on my non-olumpic bench as a roman chair for abs. I sit on the upper leg extension pads, facing the bar-end of the bench, and stick my feet under the lower pads, and I can lean all the way back just like a full Roman chair. Good deal. Make sure there's a bar with weight on the bench, though, or you tip the whole bastard toward you. Works great.

Good idea, on the calf thing.

i usually do standing calve raises using the smith machine at my gym.

When I use to work out at home I put a barbell on my shoulders like if you were going to squat and did calf raises on a block of wood.

Thats what I do, although funk has an idea i might try.
