Just curious - I'm thinking of ordering the Powertec rack online since nobody around me seems to stock racks on the sales floor (those all-in-one home gym machines and treadmills seem to be the only thing stores put on the floor?!?!?!). My question is - if you work during the day, does the rack just get dropped off at your front door to await your return??

Interesting challenge. I'm hoping that someone who's ordered a large piece of equipment can post their experience and suggestions.

In my case, I've only ordered smaller items on-line, and other than some specific instructions I provided when ordering (like where on my property to leave the items), I just tried to arrive home as early as possible on those days I expected delivery.

If you are out all day, would it be possible to ask a neighbor or friend to stop by your place and check for delivery ?

Another potential option is to talk with someone in customer service for the web site and see if you can arrange to have it shipped to the local shipping dock or distribution point and stored for pickup by you. Depending on the size/weight, you might need a pickup truck and some extra help, but I would think that some of the larger freight companies should be able to accomodate your request if they have enough information and advance notice.

If your order is heavy enough that UPS/Fedex can't deliver it, then it goes via frieght of whatever local company around you.

I just ordered a treadmill from costco and had to arrange for shipping from the store, but in my search when I was planning on buying a different one online, I read a few different policies for shipping from a few different places.

Many places only do curb-side deliveries. Meaning, the truck pulls up to the street in front of your home, takes it off the lift and there you go. Getting it in your home is your problem. Since my order was for a 300-400lbs treadmill and I live on the second floor, that is not an option for me.

Some have the option to pay extra to have the delivery company drag your shipment into your house. I was a click from ordering a treadmill from another company, but they could not do that, so I looked elsewhere.

For a lot extra, they will take it in the home, into the room of your choice and assemble it. Not many places offered that.

Most things that I have ordered and paid shipping/handling in advance, if I was not home to receive it, they just leave it at my door.

This treadmill, I am paying after the shipment is done, so if I am not there, they are not leaving it at my door and will charge me a 'not at home to recieve' fee. For this, I had to fax over to the local company my address and set up an intended day for delivery. On that day (tomorrow), they are suppose to call me at 7am or so and make sure it is still go for delivery. Then they will pick-up my treadmill at the wharehouse and sometime between 8am-4pm, I can expect delivery.

For them, standard delivery was to my doorstep. If higher then second floor, extra $10 charge for every flight of stairs. If excessively heavy, requiring more people to carry, then extra $$. I guess my 400lbs treadmill is ok for standard, since I told them what it was and they just quoted me the standard charge. I told them I needed it sometime after 3pm or I wasn't going to be there to accept it, that cost an extra $20 since I needed a more exact time then sometime monday.

Really, it's different from one company to another, but I would bet that if you pay in adavnce, they'll just drop it off at your doorstep without a care if you are not there. In any case, you'll have to call up the local shipping company to make arrangements.
