I know it's totally unrelated to lifting like that, but I wonder what that dude would look like if he cut down to say 10%. Probably insane!!! Anyway, that lift is crazy!

I bet Reza will beat Taranenko's old record this year, though!

He will never do 216/266 or more. Nothing personal, but it just isn't going to happen.

Is this video slow motion?

What makes you think that? He makes that clean look EASY

Could someone please explain to me in detail why taranenko's lift is not recognized as the world record anymore?
All the stuff I searched for on the net just said something like "they restructured the weight classes"
HOW the hell does restructuring weight classes throw an uncanny lift like that out the window like it never existed?

The made new weight classes and thus reasoned that there must be new records because of it.
Seems stupid to me but it was meant to wipe alot of the lifts done by heavily drugged lifters.

here are the records thru history for superheavies
http://www.chidlovski.net/liftup/l_recResult.asp?wname=Super+Heavyweight<ype=j
to summarize, it looks like they reset everything in 1993.
as far as world records, only 6 people have ever c&j'ed 260 or more.
4 people before they reset:
Vladimir Marchuk 260
Pisarenko 260.5, 265
Sergey Didyk 261
Tarenenko 266 (all time highest still)
2 people since the reset:
Andrey Chemerkin 260
Hossein REZAZADEH 263.5
one name stands out to me...Pisarenko. Dude was lighter than the others and was not some slovenly looking dude, lol. He would have had a gold medal in the 84 Olympics but the USSR boycotted...then he just got out of lifting to make some actual money in business. Smart Guy IMO. But imagine if he would have stayed in longer
Only 1 person has even c&j'ed more than Pisarenko and that was only 3 lbs more
another interesting thing...since the reset only 2 guys have beat Alexeevs best lift of 256 from way back in '77
cool Pisarenko interview from 2000

What weight we could have expected you to lift had you not leave the sports?
My records were far from my max. I snatched 206 and in the training was ready for 210. I cleaned and jerked 265 kilos and I was lifting 270 in the training. I jerked 260 on two reps. The experts were saying that potentially I was ready for 280 kilos. By the way, I cleaned 280.

Yeah I wish the absolute champion was athletic dude. No offence to other SHWs but imho it not great for the sports image ,afair since the days of Vlasov there was no lean olympic champions in SHW
But this guy made the right choice - there is absolutely nothing to gain being an elite level lifter, being an oligarch gives you much more for you and your family.

Hehe... Dean Lukin won the super heavies for Austrlia in 84, doesnt mean much seeing as the USSR wasn't there. I get to train with his son, the guy never lifted till he was 22, he is now 24 and front squats 500x4 and backsquats 600+, thats genetics for you.
I think if Dean Lukin did not have to work and support a family as a fisherman and could train like the Russian guys, he would have won boycott or not.

i thought that kurlovich has also done at least 260
edit: okay yeah, kurlovich did 260 in 1987, the year that taranenko did 265.5. keep in mind that the numbers in john prophet's link are only the best of each year. there may have been more than one person hitting 260 in any given year, as was the case in 1987.
2nd edit: i just read the pisarenko interview, and i must say it is a bit depressing for anyone who is a fan of the sport to read. it is a DAMN shame that he didn't get to compete in the 1984 olympic games. i don't doubt any of his number claims. he would have left an even bigger mark on the sport if it weren't for politics.

Wow, where did all your reps go?
John Prophet

yeah, my post was based on world records only. Kurlovich evidently did 260 twice, in 83 and 87 http://www.chidlovski.net/liftup/l_athleteResult.asp?a_id=136
he had 12 world records in all..but 8 of them were after the reset. So its the weird situation where he jerked 260 in 83 and it wasnt a record, then in 94 he jerked 250.5 and it WAS a "world record" lol

It's getting more difficult now.
Case in point: the entire Greek weightlifting team http://www.nowpublic.com/sports/greek-olympic-weightlifting-team-doping-scandal
