Hi there, folks. I come to you all asking for your prayers. My wife has gotten caught up in a "politcal" mess in her job. She's being chastised by certain management authorities for, well, doing her job! She works in the HR Dept., a complaint came in regarding an employee... she notified the supervisor, as is standard proceedure. This employee has the ear of too many "higher ups." He complained... and now she's getting in trouble for doing what she was supposed to do... all because of who this guy is.

She is beginning to hate the place she works at, and I can't say as I blame her.

Anyway, I've done some searching online for another job, and found a potential one with the state. I'm encouraging her to apply... please pray for her.

Thanks.

Tonight was supposed to be chest night. I usually take my gym bag with me, and when I got it from the car... I realized I didn't have my shoes in the bag! So, I drove home to get them... and found the dog had destroyed some yard furniture! I didn't kill her - but I wanted to! There was chair stuffing all over the back yard. So I spent a good half hour cleaning up... then realized I needed to get the damn grass cut, so... it was just yardio, tonight.

So - I'm getting up early tomorrow to hit both chest and back. No sleeping in for me this Saturday. Then in the afternoon, it's off to a football party - we're playing Utah this weekend.

Later!

Ah, what a great way to cap off a good workout - Broncos won (again) today: 36-3 We're 5-0, now. Speculators are talking about the Broncos being the "non-BCS" team to make it to a big bowl this year... sounds like the Fiesta Bowl. Of course, we've still got some more season to go. This was supposed to be the toughest game, and in fact we were picked to lose by 5.

Sunday will be leg day. Until then, have a good weekend!

Morning, JT! :)

Happy Monday!

I'll say a prayer for your wife. My worst situation ever at the workplace was when the attorney I worked for (who was going through a divorce) made moves on me -- backed me up against the wall of his office declaring his love (lust). I went to the personnel head to discuss the situation with her. Turns out he was having an affair with her. LOL Bad situation! :D

Gunn - no I haven't tried super setting them, but may give it a shot. Saturday's workout seemed to be a "rush" job as I had to get back home to get cleaned up to go to the football party.

Hib - so, what happened? You can't start a story and leave us hanging!

db - yep, pretty good weekend - just too short! Happy Monday to you!

Hib - so, what happened? You can't start a story and leave us hanging!

So, she told him what I said and also told him off. Then, he came up shortly thereafter towards the end of the day (now, this was after I had worked for the dork for four years and his "interest" in me seemed to have surfaced as soon as his wife left him!) and sat in front of my desk and had the audacity to say it all made him feel uncomfortable and he would prefer for me to leave. The nerve! I was young and actually sat there and agreed because (A) he was a dork, (B) I was sick of lawyers! and (C) I wanted to stay home anyway and make another baby :D . Now, the feminist side of me considered fighting him, but seeing as I would be fighting for something I didn't want to do anyway, I figured I'd let it slide.

He also asked me to leave without giving a notice, which I would never do normally. Unfortunately, I worked for another attorney who was a very nice man. (As an aside, I'm still friends with him to this day and he does mine and Brian's estate planning. :p ) Anyhoo, so the next day I came by to explain to the other attorney what had gone on and to go by Personnel and pick up my two weeks vacation they owed me, plus my check for the hours I had worked. I didn't want to involve the other attorney because he was young and not a partner and the lecher lawyer was a partner and 45 years old.

Another personnel person other than the involved personnel person (imagine that) met with me. She then told me lecher boy had said I didn't get my vacation pay because I didn't turn in a notice!! LOL I'm afraid I lost my good manners at that point. I told her she could either cough up my vacation pay or I would go upstairs to tell Governor ____ (one of our former Governors), who by the way was good friends with my father-in-law, exactly what had been going down there and that I was getting the short%

Confirmed misogynist would like to meet, on line at first, any well educated, female between the ages of 29 and 39 interested in a completely self absorbed, vapid and ultimately meaningless relationship. Volitile red heads of Irish descent preferred but not necessary.

As I am somewhat heavier than I ought to be, perhaps you could be pale and anorexic. Waif-like is good. Particularly interested in women on the rebound who have overwound their biological clocks and exhibit control issues, both in the bedroom and otherwise. If you already have children, this fact should not be revealed until after the fifth week of our "relationship".

This arrangement at fruition should taint our psyches equally, draining us both spiritually and financially. Ideally each will leave the other feeling exceedingly bitter and used at the end of no more than six months of strenuous toil and strife. I will not be good enough, you will do nothing right.

Only those witheringly cold women with great achievement in the sarcastic arts, a deep inner revulsion of all things paternalistic and the ability to fight and claw like a wounded badger trapped in a hay baler need reply.

Frugally priced pastries (cheap tarts) or whiney self centered strumpets lacking in maturity need not bother. After all, this relationship will ultimately be declared to have been "all about Me".

Hit the arms tonight, and feel like it went pretty well, overall.

Weighted parallel Bar Dips - BW +45lbs - 4x8 (after a warm up set with no weight). For some reason I struggled a bit with these. I got through them all, but really had to push it on all three sets. Usually that's only the case on set #4.

EZ Bar Curls - 90lbs 4x8 - this is the weight I was using when I was still doing three sets - I dropped it back when I went to 4 sets. I did them all, but set number 4 was sloppy. I make up for the slop (at least in my mind) with slow negatives - usually a four count on the way down, with pause thrown in at #2.

Overhead EZ Bar Extensions - 90lbs 4x8. Felt better about these than I did the previous two exercises.

EZ Bar Spider curls - 75lbs 4x8. I do these by standing against a preacher curl bench, leaning forward and essentially curling over the seat, with my triceps pressed against the pad. At the top of the movement, I give a hard squeeze. These were really sloppy tonight as I was continually fighting my foot placement and the damn bench slipping forward, which had happened the last time I tried them at my "new" gym! Hoping to fix the bench movement problem, I placed 70lbs on the bench seat, hoping that would help. Nope... didn't work. I've done these lying prone on an incline bench before, but I had a spotter then. I don't now. So - I think for the time being, these are just going to have to be dropped.

Overhead Rope Extensions - 160lbs 4x8 - up 10lbs and a new PB - bout damn time something goes right tonight!

Pinwheel Curls - 60lbs 4x8 Up 5lbs HEY Another PB. There was a dude there watching me do these and he asked what they were for - I explained them to him and so he started doing them as well. Hey, if I can help...

Cable Rope Pressdowns - 160lbs 4x8. Man, that last set was a tough one... Then I realized why... I hadn't done the pressdowns in two weeks... and this was 20lbs heavier than the last time I did them... um pb....

So, the night started off rather slow... but progressed as it went on. Thank goodness!

Well, that's it for now. Bed time for me!

Later!

Great workout! :) Maybe you can figure out a way to put the bench up against something when doing the spider curls so it won't move? Or perhaps, sit your hiney down. :D Or is standing what makes them a spider curl? Or the range of motion?

Happy Wednesday!

See, that's why you make the big bucks, Hib... cuz yur so smart! :D On this particular movement, you stand (or you can lie prone on an incline bench) - it's range of motion, plus being able to pin your arms to the back of the bench to prevent cheating... you lean forward, with your shoulders essentially over the bar, and when you raise it up, touch the bar to your lower lip or chin and squeeze your bicep... it's a great isolation movement.

I'll try putting it against the wall - where it sits, there isn't much room to maneuver it - but I'll give it a shot. Sometimes the best answers are the simple ones, huh?!

Oops, you're right. My bad. I guess that earns you another cookie!

Thanks, dbx. I enjoy working with the ropes/cables. I see a lot of folks really using body momentum to get things going... but I try to be really strict with my form with both exercises. Hi db. Thanks for asking - Nothing new to report. She's looking at some state jobs, but they don't close for another week. Keep your fingers crossed for her.

The whole thing has affected her emotionally/mentally. She's depressed & angry. She's trying to pull into a hole, and I'm trying not to let her. I've been trying to get her into the gym more than once a week, but she just gets mad... so, I'm trying to learn to shut up now! ;)

Pinky Man - humph.... oh well, at least you posted here... and I got to see that lovely avitar of yours, Barb!! Nope - no halo on me!! Remember, don't call yourself holy before you are... hmmm, who was it that said that, Barb?

So, back to the gym. For the last few weeks Wednesday and Thursday are my "rest" days, in addition to Sunday. But I was full of energy today, and decided to go back a bit early. I'm thinking of separating my shoulder and leg workout into two separate days, like I used to do, with just two days of rest. Seemed to work well before, and allows me more energy for my shoulder workouts.

Tonight was chest night. I went in thinking I needed to "up" the intensity a bit. My chest isn't growing as much as I'd like - as much as other muscle groups. So, here's how it went.

Machine Chest Press - 275lbs 4x8 (PB) with two dropsets 200lbs for 6 and 130lbs for 8. I'm not sure what the make of this particular machine is, but I really like it. There are those who've said the weight of a machine is 1/2 of the freeweights... sorry, I don't buy it. To say that this was just 137lbs is bull. Maybe on some machines, but not this one. Now, I'm not saying it's the same as 275 of free weights... but my chest was telling me it was DAMN heavy! :D

DB Flyes - 60lbs 4x8 - up 5lbs from last Friday and a PB

DB Pullover - 70lbs 4x8. Hadn't done these in a few months and thought I'd bring them back into the mix.

Cable Crossovers - 80lbs 4x8 with two dropsets 50lbs for 10 and 30lbs for 12. Can you say fried chest?? :)

ABS
Weighted Roman Chair Situps - 25lbs 3x20
Oblique crunches on the roman chair - 1x20 on each side w/ 25lbs

My chest is still feeling fried... hopefully stimulated a bit of growth! Besides, Barb wants cleavage pec pics... can't show them the way they are, now can I?

Later, folks!

I think the chest is one of the slowest growing areas. Hang in there, it'll come along. You can also hit from so many different angles/exercises. From dips, incline, decline, & flat BP to MP etc., you can work it hard.

Hey dbx,

I don't remember either... doesn't matter really, I guess. What matters is that I work, and work hard. I went in yesterday with the attitude that I was going to bump the weight up, and I was going to get 4 complete sets of 8. That last one was a slooow set... but I didn't stop, just kept going.

Thanks, Barb. I think this sort of split is what my body responds to the best. I'll keep changing around some of the exercises every couple of weeks - one here, one there, sort of thing just to keep it interesting. I have a few goals in mind, including dropping some more BF % points - but I'm not too militant about it. I figure if I eat clean the majority (say 85% of the time), and workout 5 days a week, I'll get there slowly, but surely. That's how I've done it so far... Besides, I've become convinced that oatmeal cookies should be a #1 supplement... at least the ones my wife makes!

Well, I made it to the gym tonight... much later than I wanted, but that's ok... there were only 6 others in there at 7:30!

So, I started off with the "Chris Special" back workout

Medium Grip Seated Pulldowns - 150lbs 4x8
Super Set with Straight Arm Pressdowns - 130lbs 4x8 (alternating between the two, of course, with rest afterwards)

Chris - you were right - awsome pump. I really felt it in the lats by the time I was done... the superset is definately a keeper

T-Bar Rows - 180lbs 4x8 (up 15lbs) PB. Finally hit my optimal weight on this one I think... great working through this one.

Shrugs - done on standing calf raise machine - 300lbs 3x15, up 20lbs

Back Extensions - BW +35 - 3x8 (with pause at top)

Well, that's it for now!

Later!

Well, it's the 4th qtr in the Bronco game - we're ahead 48-7... so I thought it was safe to update my journal while the game is on in the background.

Squats - (free) - 135 x 8, 225 x 8, 275 x 8, 300 2x8. That was the first time I've done freestanding squats in a long time. The last time I did it, my lower back really hurt... so maybe my back is getting stronger.

Hack squats (machine) 290 4x8

Leg Press - 600lbs 4x8 - that's up 20lbs and a pb

Seated leg curls - 140lbs 4x8 (up 5 lbs)

Donkey Calf Raises (machine) 180lbs 4x20 (up 15lbs, plus 5 reps on each set)

That's it folks. Have a good weekend!

Well, tonight was shoulder & abs night - actually walked across the parking lot in the rain... first rain here in a looooong time.

Shoulder Press (Machine) 175lbs 4x8 (after a warm up at 100) - these seemed especially hard tonight.

Rear Delts (Machine) - 165lbs 4x8 - again, these seemed especially hard tonight. Not sure why - grrr.

Front Delt DB Raises - 30lbs 4x8 - finally, seemed to have a good head of steam this time.

Side Delt DB Laterals - 30lbs 4x8 - felt like I could have gone higher on these. Odd, considering the struggle I had on the others.

ABs - Roman Chair Situps - BW + 25lbs 3x20
Oblique crunches on the roman chair - BW +25lbs 2x20 on each side.

So, overall, good workout. Took a little longer than I'd hoped, as I was helping the Mrs with a new routine that I've put her on. I've got a pic to put on here of Chris and I after we gorged ourselves. I'll transfer it in just a bit.

You may want to add some shrugs or some variation of upright rows. You use dbs in your workout, and excellent exercise is the db upright row. It hits the rear delts well, and it will bring those traps to the fore.

Thanks for the suggestions, Ray. I do shrugs, but on back day. I haven't done the upright rows in a long time. I did them before, but when I was getting up in weight on the bar, my left shoulder would POP at the top of the movement, and it was a tad painful, so I dropped them. I may give them a shot again, just to see if it was a fluke.

Arm day today...

Parallel bar dips - BW +45lbs (after warmup of 10 w/ BW only) 4x8

EZ Bar Curls - 90lbs 4x8. Not the best form on set #4

Standing Overhead EZ Bar Extensions - 90lbs 4x8 - need to bump the weight on this, but I'm thinking about going back to CGBP instead. After a certain weight, with no spotter, I get a bit nervous.

Spider Curls - 75 lbs 4x8. Well, after trying to do these before and having the damn bench move, I used an incline bench and scooted it up to the preacher bench, and used the rack to set the bar on. Seemed to work well. I like this exercise, as it is an excellent isolation of the biceps (thanks, Fitty). Need to bump the weight on these

Overhead Rope Extensions - 160lbs 4x8

Pinwheel Curls - 60lbs 4x8 - time to bump these again. :D

Behind the back, wrist curls - 90lbs 4x12. Not heavy enough, but I need more forearm work that focuses on the wrist flexors. The pinwheels work primarily the brachioradialis, along with the outer head of the bicep.

Rope Cable Pressdowns - 160lbs 4x8 - Drop set 110 for 10, 70 for 8.

That's it... arms are tired pupps!

Thanks for stopping by Lisa!

Pinwheel curls - they are a forearm exercise, much like a DB hammer curl. I really like them, and have gotten much better growth/development from them than the hammers I used to do.

To do them, db in each hand, at your side. Curl them up and across your body to where the top of the db is right under your chin. The entire movement goes from the side of your hip, up and across your torso, and back down again. Control the speed going up, and back down again. Does that help?

Good morning, ladies! It's so nice to have the three of you greet me in the morning!

Hib -- those spider curls on the incline bench - I believe they are effective, just not as effective as the bench, as the latter forces your harm to stay in once place... I think the key to these is the squeeze at the top of the movement.

Hi Barb! - nothing exciting. More policy revisions - this time from home as my boy is home sick.

Good workout tonight, I think! I was full of energy, pretty much up until the end. Hit the chest hard - and mixed up the presses a bit.

Machine Chest Press - 275 1x8, 280 1x8 - Decided the machine wasn't doing what it was that I wanted... so I moved back to the Smith Machine.

Smith Incline Press - 245lbs 1x8, 250lbs 2x8. Great pump, and a PB in the incline Smith! Actually, the highest I'd done in the past on the Smith was 240.

DB Flyes - 60lbs 4x8

DB Pullover - 75lbs 4x8 - good weight - back to my top wt on this one.

Cable Crossovers - 90lbs 2x8 & 80 lbs 2x8. I think I was just out of energy by the time I got to these. I wanted to bump the weight for 4 sets, but it wasn't in me. On the 80's, I held and flexed my pecs for a count of three. Good pump. Then did a drop set @ 50lbs for 10reps.

By this time, my chest was fried!

ABS
Weighted Roman Chair Situps - 35lbs 3x20 (up 10lbs)

Finished, as always, with a banana and a double protein drink, along with some BCAA caps.

That's it folks!

Today I hit the back... felt it was an ok workout - head wasn't quite into it, but that's ok...

Seated Cable Pulldowns - 150lbs 4x8. You know, this perplexes me. Why can I do BW pullups at 220lbs, but only 150lbs on pulldowns???

These were super-setted with:
Chris' Standing pressdowns - 140lbs 4x8 - up 10lbs from last week. By the time I got done with the superset, my back was puuuumped up!

T-Bar Rows - 180lbs 4x8. I'm really glad I added these to the back thickness routine. I've been doing them for about 3 months or so, maybe a little less, but I'm still progressing on them.

Shrugs (done on standing calf raise machine) - 300lbs 3x15, with a hold and squeeeeeze at the top.

Back Extensions - BW +35lbs 4x8

That's it for the workout... the gym I go to is getting all new equipment, so the main gym room is kinda out of wack. It's funny watching expressions on people's faces when they walk down a row, turn to "their" machine, and realize... it's gone or moved or whatever. It's funny the habits we get into. One poor girl that works there was getting yelled at by this really creepy looking guy that SHE had taken away HIS ab machine. She's such a sweet heart, and looked like she was gonna cry... so I went over and just stood there and stared at him... he stopped yelling looked at me, then her, then stomped away. I'd like to presume he realized he was being a prick and knew I was going to get all over his **** if he didn't stop!

Well, tomorrow morning it's back to the gym for legs. I'll be changing things up a tad since they took the hack squat machine away, and won't be replacing it. Oh well...

That's it for now, folks (yep MarkY, that's it!) ;)

Later!

Hi Mark!

~ Chris

Glad to see you made it back ok... don't know if you noticed the pic I posted of us. It was great having lunch with you buddy! When you come down this Summer, we'll have to do a little damage on the bbq!

Well, back to the gym today for legs! Let me just start by saying my legs are TIRED!

Squat Machine - 160lbs 1x10 & 260 1x10. I really wasn't planning on doing much on this machine. It was new to the gym so I wanted to give it a try. From the angle, it seemed to focus primarily on the quads, much like a hack squat machine (which they got rid of in my gym). Overall, I liked it, and I think I'll probably keep it in the mix, but use it after the squat rack squats

Squats (in squat rack) - 135lbs 1x8 - did this just to get the feel, again, of the free standing squat. Bumped it to 275 for 1x8, then 315 for 4x8. Yippee, no back pain! But by the 4th set on the 315's, I was tired!

I rested for about 5 minutes as I was helping the Mrs with her workout, then on to the leg press. Considering how much the squats knocked it out of me, I was feeling suprisingly strong and full of energy after the longer rest.

Leg Press - 680lbs 4x8. This # looks like a lot more than the past, but I discovered I was adding up the weight wrong... not sure how I did that. Oh well. This is actually up 10lbs from last week.

Leg Curls - skipped em just cuz

Calf Press - 520lbs 3x20 - did these on the leg press machine and found this was an awsome workout... the angle of my body was similar to a donkey calf raise, so that may be why. I've found the 20's fry my calves. I did measurements the other day and found my calves have finally grown! 1/2" since July! Woo Hoo!!

ABS
Weighted Roman Chair Situps - 35lbs 3x20
Weighted Oblique Crunches on Roman Chair - 35lbs 1x20 on each side.

Well, that's it. Going to a harvest festival tonight at the Church - not that excited about it, but the Mrs. and the kids are. Tomorrow is a rest day from the gym... then back on Monday!

Later!

Well, the BSU game just ended against New Mexico State 40-28. While we won, I was REALLY disappointed in our pass defense. Something's gotta change there. I hate zone defense! Morning Hib. Yep - that's me... sweet! ;)

Boy, my butt is dragging this morning. It rained all night long, and hearing it the roof was something we haven't heard in a loong time around here. Then, the stupid dog wouldn't go in her dog house, so she whined and yipped in the rain... she's got a mansion for a dog house. The people who lived in the house before us put up a storage shed, then insulated it... I don't use it for storage, so it's her "house." I saw her go in it a couple of times, but she wouldn't stay... had to make sure I was awake, I guess. I better get some caffine in me before I fall asleep at my desk! The gym should be interesting tonight. :(

Hey Barb! Glad to see you visiting me again!

Shoulder day! Wooo Hooo

Well, my butt wasn't dragging as much as I thought it might have been. I don't know whether it made a difference or not, but I've started drinking LOTS of Arizona brand green tea... who knows, but I'm not complaining.

Machine Shoulder Press - warm up with 75 for 12 reps. 175lbs 4x8

DB Rear Delt Raises on Incline Bench - 40lbs 4x8. I hadn't done them with dbs in quite a while... this is a PB for me! woo hoo!

Arnold Presses - 40lbs 1x8 & 50lbs 3x8. I looked back in my log... I hadn't done Arnolds since June... at 35lbs! The last set with 50lbs was a tough one... at least the last couple of reps.

Ok - so I'm starting to get pooped out.

Front DB Raises - 30lbs 4x8. Tried 35lbs... no way. I think those Arnolds zapped any chance of moving up with these today.

Side DB Laterals - 30lbs 4x8. Good finishing movement... and boy were my shoulders finished!

ABs
Roman Chair Weighted Situps - 35lbs, 3x20
Roman Chair Weighted Oblique Crunches - 35lbs 1x20 on each side. Probably should have done more, but I was DONE!

Well, that's it from this corner of the world!

Later!

Didn't make it to the gym last night - ended up working late (damn meetings)

10 tips to liven up a meeting...

1 Stand up and act indignant. Demand that the boss tell you the 'real' reason this meeting has been called.

2 Spill coffee on the conference table. Produce a little paper boat and sail it down the table.

3 During a meeting, each time the boss makes an important point, (or at least one he/she seems to consider important), make a little noise like you are building up to an orgasm.

4 Stay behind as everyone else, including the boss, leaves. Thank them for coming.

5 Give a broad wink to someone else at the table. In time, wink at everyone. Sometimes shake your head just a little, as if to indicate that the speaker is slightly crazy and everybody knows it.

6 Arrange to have a poorly-dressed young woman with an infant quietly enter the meeting, stare directly at the (male) speaker for a while, burst into tears, then leave the room.

7 Bring a hand puppet, preferably an animal. Ask it to clarify difficult points.

8 When there is a call for questions, lean back in your chair, prop your feet up on the table, smile contentedly, and say, "Well, here's the way I see it, J.B..." (or any other impressive-sounding initials that are not actually your boss's.)

9 Complain loudly that your neighbour won't stop touching you. Demand that the boss make him/her stop doing it.

10 Bring a small mountain of computer printouts to the meeting. If possible, include some old-fashioned fanfold paper for dramatic effect. Every time the speaker makes a point, pretend to check it in one of the printouts. Pretend to find substantiating evidence there. Nod vigorously, and say "uh-huh, uh-huh!"

Yesterday was supposed to be arm day, but as I said before, it didn't work out that way. The twist to today's workout is that yesterday I stopped by the BB.com store and picked up a jug of BSN's NO-Xplode. Never tried anything like it (well, other than a straight NO product). I'd read the hype, and saw there were several folks (not just teens) that liked it... including our very own GSC. Well, I took the first dose before getting to the gym Was supposed to be a half hour before, but it was more like 15 minutes. Oh well.

Parallel Bar Dips - w.u. BW only 1x12. BW +45lbs 4x8 (not noticing any NO-Xplode effect yet)

EZ Bar Curls - 90lbs 4x8 - Ok - it's starting to kick in here, at least I think! The pump I have by the time I'm done with this movement is more like the one I have at the END of the arm workout... interesting. Didn't seem to do anything with strength (although I doubt it would on the first shot, anyway)... do noticed I'm very focused on what I'm doing...

CGBP - 205 4x8. Brought this one back to the mix. This is a PB and up 10lbs. I feel like I could have done more, too. Next time. Again, big pump.

Standing, alternating DB curls - Another I brought back to the mix. 50lbs 1x8. Too light. 55lbs 3x8! Woo hoo. Holy crap - are those veins poking out? cool.

Overhead Cable Rope Extensions - 160lbs 1x8, 165lbs 3x8 - PB!

Spider Curls - 60lbs 4x8.

Behind the back barbell wrist curls - 100lbs 4x12. Up 10lbs from last week. Still trying to get back to the appropriate weight on these.

So... a really good feeling workout. The pump, which I'm assuming is from the NO-Xplode was amazing, as was the vascularity as I was doing the lifts. At this point, I realize both of these are simply psychological boosts... not necessarily anything else. But at the same time, I think dialing in psychologically, and really being into it at that moment... - feeling the pump (damn hard feeling biceps and triceps), and seeing the vascularity was really nice. Now, hopefully over the next little bit, I'll realize more benefits from this experiment.

Well, that's it from here!

Later!

Hi Hib. Yah, I went back and forth as to whether or not to start it. In the past, I've had mixed results from creatine... but this mixture has much more to it than just a form of creatine. Honestly, it was a wild hair that made me stop at the store and pick it up. Sure is nice to have bb.com just down the street from me... although the budget may not like it! ;)

Just to get everyone in the spirit of the upcoming Bronco - Vandal game, I thought I'd share a little of the banter that's going around. Oh sure... most don't give a hoot... but I'm gonna share anyway!

The Kibbie dome sold out for this year's game because-
1) local frats were told there was free Milwaukees Best and free naked pics of rosie O'donnell to be handed out at half time

2) The Moscow Locals and other Vandal Faithful was told it was a Monster truck show

and
3) Dennis Erickson was going to show the fans how to use the infamous time machine so they can relive the "Glory Days"

The Vandals put their collective mellons together this year for a new t-shirt slogan for this weekend's game...and came up with, are you ready?

BOISE IS NOT A STATE

I bet that little diddy took them a good three months to come up with. So that's what you'll see the losers wearing this year instead of their old fall back “Win or lose, we still have booze”.

The Statesman say the Kibbie Dome is sold out for Saturday's game. Looks like even Northern Idaho fans will turn out to watch a good team play.

Q. What do the Idaho Vandals & Billy Graham have in common?
A. They both can make 5, 000 people stand up & yell “Jesus Christ” !

Q. If you put a drunk UofI co-ed from each of the sororities on top of the Kibbie Dome, which would fall first?

A. The Kibbie Dome

Q: Why do UofI graduates put their degree in their windshield?
A: So they can park in the handicapped spots.

Q. Why did BSU decide to keep the blue turf instead of changing to green?
A. So the UofI cheerleaders wouldn’t graze before the game…

Q. WHAT ARE THE TOUGHEST 6 YEARS IN A VANDAL’S LIFE?
A. 3RD GRADE

Q: What did the Idaho student get on his SAT score?
A: Drool

Q: What’s the best thing to ever come out of Moscow?
A: Highway 95

Q. What do you call 47 people sitting around a TV watching a Bowl Game?
A. The Idaho Vandals

Decided to mix it up a bit tonight with the chest... trying some different things in the hopes of stimulating some extra pec growth this time around.

Smith Incline Bench - 250lbs 3x8 & 1x7.5 That last set was a killer and I just couldn't lock it out. 250 was the pb I had last week - but for only two sets... so this is the most I've done with this weight. WOO HOO!

Decided to try some flat DB benches - Hadn't done them in probably a year. As I started them - I realized why I stopped! But, I did them anyway.
70lbs 4x8. The weight was light - but, I had difficulty getting them into position - kind of flung them up off of my thighs. I think some of it is "mental" in that I feel like I'm going to drop them on myself or something - I dunno. Anyway, in the process of getting them up from my thighs into starting postion, I started to get a pain from my wrist joint traveling down about 4" along my outer forearm bone... felt like some sort of stress... moreso in the right than the left. As I finished up with these, I decided not to go this route again. They still hurt - even to the touch.

DB Flyes - 65lbs 1x8 & 1x6 (most I've ever done on these) After the second set, I failed after only 6 reps - pissed me off... so I dropped to 60lbs for 2x8. It's funny - doing 60lbs for flyes does not stress my forarms like the db benches did.

DB Pullover - 75lbs 4x8 - arm pain is getting annoying!

Just for ****s and grins, I did 4 sets of 8 on the decline bench. Only did it with 135lbs... just trying to totally exhaust my chest, and exhausted it is! Normally I do my declines (when I do them) on the Smith machine, with much heavier weight.

Abs
Did these as a super set each time - resting only after I'd done the situps with the obliques on each side - rest only 30 seconds after the superset.
Weighted Roman Chair situps - 35lbs 3x20 - supersetted with weighted oblique crunches 3x20

Finished up with my carbs, BCAA caps and a protein shake...

Ok - so I'm leaving and walking toward the stairs to go down to the first floor. This woman stops me and tells me how she's been watching me for several weeks and that I've really grown in size and strength from what she's seen! (looks around with a goofy grin on my face, are you talking to me?) :D Ok, nice ego boost... didn't hurt that she was attractive either. Funny thing was that she seemed really nervous to talk to me... that's a new one to wrap my head around. Told the Mrs about it (she wasn't at the gym tonight) - now I have a feeling she'll be going more often to "protect me." Yah, right. ;) So, if nothing else, maybe the Mrs will be at the gym a bit more often!

Well, that's it from Bronco Country!

Edit - almost forgot - day two with the NO-Xplode. Nice pump, again, although it didn't seem as strong as yesterdays. Focus was definately there, as well. Still don't think I'll have anything to show on strength yet... although last week I tried those 65's on the flyes and didn't get anything done - so who knows. Think I've reacted fine, so will go to the normal two scoop serving starting with tomorrow's back workout. Certainly no side effects like some have mentioned.

Later, folks!

Hi JT, I hear you on the problem getting the DB"s into position. I used to struggle with that until I invested in the Power Hooks after reading about them in Jag's journal. They solve the problem and let you work with the required weight without that problem setting up. Definetly worth the investment if you plan on making DB work a staple.

To quote Goofy - "Gorsh"

So, the Mrs and I just got back from her Ortho... if you remember, she's had knee problems for some time now. To this point, treatment as been "conservative" which has included PT, and a couple of cortizone shots.

Well, today's x-rays show things aren't getting better - and in fact are getting worse, which she already knew because of the increased pain and swelling she's been having. Some torn cartledge, as well. Sooooo, next Wednesday she get's to get scoped where they'll cut the torn cartledge and scrape the back of her knee cap, as well as some other stuff. Oh joy. :(

Yep - she had her hysterectomy in May - and now this. Luckily, it's scope rather than a cut her open type of surgery. They will do a bit of laser work, as well, to smooth things out. He said two days not using the leg, keeping it elevated. It will be sore for a bit, but full recovery is fairly quick. I think she's very depressed about this... just one more thing for her to have to deal with.

Pullups - BW only - 8/6/6/5 - The seated pulldown machine was taken every time I looked at it, so instead of waiting I did pullups. Not happy with the #'s

Superset with Chris' pressdowns - 140lbs 4x8 - did a couple of dropsets after the last working set - 110 1x6 & 80 1x7

T-Bar Row - 180lbs 4x8. Struggled with these - although I've been using this weight for a while. I've been doing t-bars for a while and I think it's time to switch these out. Gonna do bb rows for a while - probably on the Smith as I used to do in the past.

Shrugs - done on the standing calf raise machine - 320lbs 3x15. Up 20lbs

Extensions - BW+35lbs - 3x15

I dunno - lots of stressful stuff going on at home and maybe that was just crowding into my brain last night.

Today - Saturday, Legs - much better workout.

Machine Squats (done as a warmup) 200lbs 1x10, 260 1x8. I kind of like this machine - the feeling I get in my quads is very similar to hack squats. Is useful for a warmup, I think.

Squats, done in the squat rack - 225 1x8, 305 1x8, 315 4x8.

Leg Press - 680lbs 4x8.

Calf Press - 610lbs 3x20. OMG! My calves were killing me by the time I was done!

Leg Curls - 140lbs 3x8, 145lbs 1x8. These felt good.

Leg Extensions - 190lbs 3x8. 200lbs 1x8.

So, much better workout today than yesterday. Bronco game is about to start... and no, I'm not going to be eating clean during the game!

That's it folks! Later.

Thanks, dbx. I suppose you're right. Thanks for the reminder.

Well, the BIG game is history... we won 42-26. Not nearly as clean of a win as most fans would have liked. In fact, they got within two points of us at one point. We really have some pass-defense work to do. BUT a win is a win... and it's all the sweeter when it's against the University of Idaho! :D

I'll say a few words too. M and I know all about knee issues, she had 2 surgerys within 9 months to get hers right.

Thanks mom and greenie. I'm assuming she'll have the right knee done too... just down the road a bit. It's a never ending adventure, huh?

Greenie - what ended up being the problem with M's knee? With my Mrs. it's related to a genetic disorder, that aparently is common in women... just can't remember the name.

So, tonight we went and shot a few rounds off at the rifle range. The Mrs. shot my 30-06 (A 1917 Winchester - WWI vintage). She loved it! Fun to watch, too.

Afterwards, I hit the gym for a shoulder workout.

Machine Press - 175lbs 4x8. Finally, time to move up on this one.

Rear Delts (machine) - 165lbs 1x8, 180lbs 3x8 - PB! Last week I did worked my rear delts with db's - I honestly feel this particular machine works them better... for now anyway. So, I'm gonna stick with them.

Arnold Presses - 50lbs 4x8. Went through these very easily. Will bump the weight next time.

Side Laterals - 35lbs 4x8 - up 5lbs and a pb on this movement.

Abs
Weighted Roman Chair Situps - BW +35 Superset with weighted Oblique crunches on the roman chair (BW + 35lbs). 3x20 all the way around.

Decided to not do the front db raises to give the front delts a bit of a break, as they've been a bit sore lately.

Well, that's it! Arms tomorrow.

Later!

Hey Barb, Yep - she had a blast (no pun intended). I've tried for years to get her to go either hunting or shooting with me... but to no avail. She decided to go to the range with me this time and asked if she could shoot the rifle. It's a Winchester Model 1917 Enfield Military Rifle from WWI. My grandfather bought it in the late 40's at a surplus sale, then gave it to my dad, who has given it to me. A 30-06 is a pretty large caliber - and this is a big heavy rifle, with a hell of a kick. But she did really well with it and shot a nice pattern for her first time.

Nice workout, Mark! I've never shot any type of gun. I wanna learn!!

Well, I'm sure that could be arranged! Come on up! But I have a feeling Greenie is a bit closer to where you are and could do a much better job.

Thanks, folks. I'll let her know of your well wishes.

Well, hit the gym for the final night of this cycle - Arms

Parallel Bar Dips - BW +45lbs 4x8. I think it's time to bump these up.

Standing EZ Bar Curls - 90lbs 4x8. I increased the rest time to 2 minutes between sets, and found I could get through these without too much cheating... at least not until the last set - instead of the third. I don't know if that's progress or not.

Skull Crushers - 90lbs 4x8 - Hadn't done these in several months as I didn't have a spotter. It was nice to do these. The last time I did skulls, I could barely do one set of 90lbs.

Standing DB Curls (alternating) - 55lbs 4x8

Overhead Cable Rope Extensions - 160lbs 4x8. Same weight as last week, time to move up.

Pinwheel Curls - 60lbs 4x8. Quite easy this time - time to move up, I think.

Wrist Curls (standing with bar behind my back) - 135 4x8. Good weight - good pump.

Well, that's it folks. I think this next cycle, which will start on Thursday, I'm gonna start a week or two of a little lighter weight, and a bit higher reps just to change it up - probably in the 12 rep range. Feeling as though my tendons need a little attention via the higher rep, lower weight schema.

Later!

Thanks, Chris - we both appreciate your prayers and thoughts.

We're back home - surgery went well, although the doc said what he found was worse than expected. Two tears in the miniscus (sp?), plus a lot of damage to the cartledge under her knee cap. So - she's on the couch with her leg elevated for the next couple of days. After the followup visit, she'll get some exercises from a PT to strengthen the knee, muscles and tendons around it.

She is allergic to all OTC anti-inflamitories, so she's limited on what she can do to reduce the pain once's she's back in action. So it is going to come down to weight loss, pt, and cortisone shots - although the doc doesn't like to rely on those too much.

Take care, everyone.

Hey there everyone... just checking in.

This week I'm doing lighter workouts, just sort of "instinctive" training, with nothing really planned. Higher reps (12), lower weights (60% 1RM)... just for a change. This sort of thing is working well right now, especially, as they are getting all new equipment at my gym this week and the place is a bit discombobulated at the moment. Anyway, this style of workout will last through Tuesday. Did chest work last night and back tonight.

This coming Thursday, I'll start something a little different, not sure what yet... but thinking about focusing on some weaker body parts by working them twice a week for a few weeks, and keeping the "standard" on the other body parts. Probably will start with legs... but haven't decided yet.

The Mrs. is recovering well, but she's feeling a bit more pain as the meds they gave her during the surgery are completely out of her system now. Mostly soreness around the incision points.

Have a great weekend! (HEY, where's my new Halloween thread title??) :( ;)

Mornin' Mark,

IMO, the trouble with the concept of "instinctive training" is that, similar to the concept of "bulking", most people don't approach it with any research or clear idea of what the intent is...and so they end up just having vague workouts that don't produce the results they expect.

To my mind, I think incorporate "I.T." into my training plan. So for example; while "Back Day" will always target the major muscle groups, the order in which I do them, the exercises I select and the poundages I use may vary depending how I sense my body is handling the workout.

:)

Oh, I agree Chris... Even though I call it "instinctive" each day is still a stand alone day for each body part... and it's only this week. Like I said, I'm far to anal to go into the gym and say to my self "what do I feel like doing." But at the same time, I might, for instance, on back day say "I'm going to do bent over rows, instead of t-bars." That's as creative as I get...

Now, I didn't mean just go in there and do anything willy nilly. :p There's has to be a little brainwork put into picking your exercises. I just meant I'd rather choose them at the moment -- like on back day, I know I'd like to hit my lats, my rhomboids, my lower back . . and I make sure I choose exercises that do that.

Hey Gun! Yah, I know... cookies everywhere, except my house, which is probably a good thing.

Well, I've settled on a workout routine after reading a few articles... this is going to be what I'm calling a 3 week hypertrophy blast - focusing on hitting each body part (except arms) two times a week. I have the impression it will be tough, and could easily lead to over training. But I'm only going to do it for three weeks, and then at the end of November I'm taking an entire week off - a forced rest as I'll be out of town for a week long seminar. All will be done for 3 sets of 12 reps and have two built in rest days - Wednesday and Sunday.

MONDAY - CHEST & BACK
Incline Bench
Incline Flies
Pullovers

Pulldowns SS w/
Pressdowns
Seated Rows
Extensions

TUESDAY - LEGS & SHOULDERS
Machine Squats (only for warm up - light weight)
Rack Squats
Leg Extensions
Leg Curls
Standing Calf Raises

Machine Press
Rear Delt Machine
Side Laterals
Shrugs

THURSDAY - ARMS
Weighted Dips
EZ Bar Curls
One Hand Cable Pressdowns
DB Curls
Pinwheel Curls
Behind the Back Wrist Curls

ABS

FRIDAY - CHEST & BACK
Flat Bench
Flat Flies

Rack Chins
Smith Rows
Extensions

SATURDAY - LEGS & SHOULDERS
Rack Squats
Leg Press
Calf Press
Leg Extensions
Girondi Leg Curls

Smith Military Press
DB Rear Delts
Cable Laterals
DB Shrugs

ABS

I'm going to start this tomorrow.

Tough lookin' schedule jt1.

Yah, Joe - I think it will be a tough schedule, which is why I'm only going to do it for 3 weeks. I just want to shock the hell out of my body, then take a break, then go back to what's worked for me in the past. It's more of an experiment, than any "science." We'll see how it goes! I figure I can do anything for three weeks.

Hi db, and thanks. Actually I didn't find this routine, per se. I read a few hypertrophy articles by Christian Thibidaux (sp?), and just decided to change things up a bit and do this short "blast." The routine itself is what I put together on my own.

Well, back to the grind... ugh. I can't wait for this Friday to come... I'm going on my OWN retreat at a local monastery.

Just checked out your new routine. You are a hard worker. Good luck with it.

So, I started the new workout tonight... and it really felt good. I was really dialed in tonight. To be honest, I was a bit hestitant given I'd be working both chest and back together, but man, it was a great combo! I'm working at 60-65% of my 1 RM with a tad higher rep scheme. Some of the weights I need to bump up a bit more, but I really felt good tonight.

Chest: Each at 3x12

Incline Bench
Incline Flies
Pullovers

Back: Each at 3x12
Pulldowns
Superset with Pressdowns
Seated Rows
Extensions

Abs
Weighted Roman Chair Crunches (these weren't scheduled tonight, but I had them done before I realized that. Oh well - can't hurt, right?)

I tried, just for the heck of it, rack pulls. I wanted to try two or three just to get the feel... I can't wait to do them for a full 3x12 on my next chest/back day.

Well, until tomorrow!

Later!

Nice workout, JT. I really like chest and back together.

Nice workout Mark. The chest and back can be a tough combo, but it sure feels good when completed. Good luck with the new routine.
