Do any of you guys train at home? I want to build a home gym, but am a little hesitant to bench and squat without a spotter or a power rack. Any suggestions?

i train at home... i just pray to god that i lift that weight up brutha, if i fail i fail, its do or die without a spotter. just psyche yourself up that if you don't lift the **** you are going to the ER. not a good philosophy but i have made very good strength and size gains hehe :)

I train at home, sometimes without spotters (though not often - 2 buddies also train at my house, and we usually train on squats together), and I use a power rack; always with the safety bars in. I look at it this way:

- my power rack was only about $250 (USD), which is likely a lot cheaper than any injury that I might get from a squat gone wrong. Even with health insurance, the sum of the annual deductible and office co-pays could easily climb past a paltry $250.

- the safety of the rack, with the safety bars in, gives me confidence and keeps me from thinking "what happens if I get in trouble and can't dump the bar fast enough?" "What if I dump the bar off the back and it hits me on the back of the calf and snaps my leg?" "What if I try to dump the bar to the front and injure my neck or back doing so?", instead of just lifting the weight.

Because of these mental distractions, it hurts your training to not have a power rack.

In short, a power rack is (or should be) the kingpin of any home gym. It is false economy, at the very least, to build a home gym without a power rack - unless you don't intend to do squats, in which case you might as well just go to a trendy gym and lift the pink dumbbells.

A power rack isn't just for squats, it lets you get by with a good adjustable incline/flat/decline bench by serving as supports for racking the bar for bench press, military press, etc.

So, in short, my suggestion:

Unchintz and buy a power rack!
