Well, had a CAT scan today for my sinuses. Still no word from my doc on the results but that's pretty typical with her. Usually takes her a couple days to catch up after test results unless there's something dire going on. Gonna have a date with Lady Jag tonight and go get some dinner and catch a flick. I think we're leaning towards "Lucky Number Slevin" as it's getting pretty good reviews. It'll be nice to spend some time with the Missus. :) Have a great Friday night, everyone!

Tough workout! Youre doing 6 sets of 3 correct?
Yup. 6 sets of 3 for the next couple of weeks and then I'll jump to a round of 4x10's and then probably back to the 6x3's as I seem to get the best results from them. I'm doing some periodization experimenting with my routine right now.
Chris, thankfully the CAT Scan they did on me was a little more high tech. LOL! :D

Great workouts there, buddy.
I think Chris' picture is the version of the cat scan they use in the backwoods he tromps around in. There aren't enough current bushes to plug the high tech stuff into during the long winters. ;)

Thanks, dap! The 6x3's are pretty challenging, but I really like 'em. It's gonna be a trip jumping from these to lower weight and high reps in a couple of weeks! LOL! :D So far I'm happy with the periodization. My body tends to adapt pretty quickly to my routines, I've discovered and this approach seems to keep it guessing a bit more. I'm really happy with the different exercise combinations I've chosen as I think they're pretty well the cream of the crop and don't really want to change them out, so this is a way to avoid having to do that and still keep muscle adaptation from doing me a disservice. Thanks for swinging by!

Yeah, same thing. It doesn't sound as cool to say CT Scan as it does CAT Scan, though. :)
Slept in a bit today. Enjoyed having the whole bed to myself this morning as Lady Jag got up early to go to her Pilates class. :D She's really enjoying it. She came home and did 25 minutes on the "epilleptical" afterwards. I'm really proud of her. She's really applying herself. I got her set up with a whey shake after her workout and then made us some of my world famous banana-oatmeal pancakes done on the electric griddle. Yes....it's a carb-up day for me! :D Going to hit back/bi's later on today after I wake up a bit and am up for it. It's nice and sunny here with a few clouds, even though the weather reports keep saying it's going to rain today. Think I'll hold off on washing the cars until tomorrow. Hope everyone's having a great Saturday!

No, she's never managed to go longer than a week without giving into the urge, unfortunately. I told her that once she starts sucking wind trying to do her cardio she'd start getting more determined to stop. Sure enough, today while she was doing her time on the epilleptical she said as much. It's good that she's developing some new stress-coping mechanisms, as that's really what seems to set off her desire to smoke. I think she'll get there, but it will take her some time.
Good luck with the sinuses!!
Thanks, Rob! I have a feeling they're going to push me towards some surgery. I've suspected a deviated sceptum for awhile, now. We'll see what the CAT Scan results look like.
The Workout
Was really tired all day long. Worked on some new electronica for awhile and took a nap. Was pretty well prepared to bag it for today and do my back/bi's workout tomorrow, but browing the forums I stopped and looked at Timberwolf's progress pic's and said "Holy ****! I better get my ass in the gym!" So, that's exactly what I did. I'm really glad I did, too. I had an exceptional workout tonight. Here's how it went:
Preface: 30 second stretch from multiple angles after each segment/exercise. Kept rest times between 60-75 seconds. Also tried to slow negatives on every rep of most exercises when I was able to.
Jump rope - High speed for 45 seconds, rest for 15 seconds. I repeat this over and over for five full minutes. Good light warmup.
Ab's Superset
NO ABS THIS WEEK
6x3 - Shoulder Width Grip Pullups - BW + 35 lbs. on Grizzly Belt - Up 10 lbs. for a new PB!
6x3 - Lat Flies - BW + 35 lbs. on Grizzly Belt - Up 25 lbs. for a new PB!
6x3 - Hammer Grip Sternum Pullups - BW + 35 lbs. on Grizzly Belt - Up 10 lbs. for a new PB!
My lats were fried after this. I was amazed that I hit these so heavy tonight.
Rack Deads- Warm-Up 1 - 185x10/Warm-up 2 - 275x6/ Working Sets 315 -6x3 - Back to the heavy ass weight on my dead's, finally. I've kept them lighter the last few weeks while my inner thigh has gotten the soreness worked out of it. These felt really good tonight, too! I'll be feeling 'em tomorrow, no doubt.
T-Bar Rows - 6x3 @ 140 - Upped the weight by ten pounds on these. New PB! :D
DB Preacher Curls - 35 lbs. DB's - 6x3 - Got the idea to do preachers off the back of my incline bench using DB's. Did 'em nice and slow. Killer burn and pump off of these.
Straight BB Curl - 120 - 6x3 - GREAT pump off of these tonight.
DB Hammer Preachers - 25 lbs. - More preachers with the DB, this time with a hammer grip. Nice finish to this workout.
PWO shake and then slammed out 15 minutes on the epilleptical (2 miles) before stretching out and cooling down.
Total Lift Time - 70 minutes
I'ma gonna sleep gooooood tonight! :D

Your workout looks great bro. Speaking of shoulders, I did your suggested Cable Shoulder Exercises (Lateral & Front Raises) and they were KILLER! Bye-Bye DBs, bring on the cables!

When Lady Jag is ready to quit smoking, she will. I'd spend 2 hours in the gym, then as soon as I was out the door, I'd light up. I said this is stupid. After having been hypnotized twice, tried the patches twice, and tried to quit cold turkey numerous times over the years, I decided this was the time. So that was Jan. 1, 1995 and not a drag since.
Good luck with the sinuses... two years ago I had septoplasty along with a host of procedures for sleep apnea (uppp, septoplasty, turbinectomy, tonsillectomy, polypectomy)... everything but a lobotomy (although I think that was the only place there was nothing to remove anything from). :D Big difference.

Thanks, BS! I thought you'd like those cable exercises for the shoulders. Check out kimsquit's journal here in this Over 35 Journaler's forum. He does some pretty wicked stuff with cables and a Swiss ball for his shoulders (I hear they're thinking of replacing the Donkey Show in Tijuana with it, too). I don't have a cable set-up at home, so I don't do any cable exercises at the moment. And give those incline presses of his a try. You'll fry your pec's. :D

Thanks for the well wishes, Frank. It's been hard for Lady Jag because she watched me put down the cig's over a year ago and never look back. I just said I was done with it and stopped cold turkey. I'm sure it's frustrating for her to not be able to do it quite as easily as I did, but she'll get there. As for my sinuses....suddenly I don't feel so slighted by my own sinus problems. LOL! Damn, man...I'm surprised you don't have a nose like Michael Jackson after all that!

Thanks, dbfl! I feel like a train ran over my back, this morning. LOL! I'm sore as hell from that workout. Particularly in my lats! I still am undecided whether the higher reps with lower weight or the lower reps with HEAVY weight on the pullups are doing the most for my lat development. I'll have to experiment more.
Lazy Sunday around here, so far. I'll probably do a little work outside and do some prep for some renovations we're looking at doing in our Master Bath. Or maybe I'll just play PS2 all morning. LOL! :D Have a great Sunday, folks!

Had a busy day yesterday pruning trees, putting down insect barriers around the house, cleaning up leaves, grocery shopping, prepping some drywall for texturing and painting and getting some stuff done around the house like laundry and the dishes while Lady Jag was at work. It helped to work some of the stiffness out of my back from that last workout, too, so there's an added bonus for you. A quiet Monday at work for a change, but then again, the day's not over, yet. Well, heard back from my doc about the CAT Scan I had done on my sinuses. Sinus diseas in the ethmoid and maxillary sinuses and a deviated septum. Off to the ENT for me. Wheeeee! One step closer to the sinus surgery I'm almost certain they're going to reccomend. Bleh!
EdIt: Forgot to add that I cranked out 25 minutes on the interval program on the "epilleptical" tonight. 2.9 miles, 148 calories, heartrate averaged around 153. Rockin'!

Thanks, asoto and dbflgirl. I'll be getting things set up with an ENT here pretty soon to get a more in depth opinion of what's going on and what needs to be done to solve it. The bad part at the moment is that my voice sometimes has some problems because of the sinus issue, so it's going to have to be fixed at some point. I know they can do a lot with drugs and therapy these days, but there's only one way to fix a deviated septum and that's the surgery. All I can say is, it's a good thing they render you unconscious for sinus surgery because if anyone thinks they'll be able to cram stuff up my nose and poke around in my sinus cavities when I'm awake without me breaking their fingers off, they are sorely mistaken. :D
I've been doing some experimenting with some low carb days for awhile, but yesterday I ran my first full NO-carb day ever. I have to say, I quite liked it and even though it was only a single day I do like the results that my body was showing me from doing that. I kept the EFA intake pretty high yesterday and my energy levels didn't really flag too much. Nice. I'm carbing back up today, as I plan to hit chest and tri's after work. Happy Tuesday, folks!
jag
Well, heard back from my doc ... a deviated septum...
(joed gently placing his hand on jag's shoulder) I'm so sorry to hear that. I tell ya, you take care of it from when it's small, and look at what can happen. You wiped it when it was runny and feeling bad, gave it chicken soup to sniff, and made sure it was bundled up in cold weather. When you took it out to play you made sure the other kids weren't too rough. Even bought a little puppy to play with it. When you had to go to work you made sure it was clean and ready for the day. And as it grew bigger you tried to protect it as best you could.
But as the months turned into years you slowly must have realized that despite your efforts something was starting to go wrong. One fateful day you take a long hard look in the mirror and can't deny it anymore; it's there as plain as the...well, your worst fears have come to pass. It's deviated.
Sure there are medications and therapy that might help, but how sad you must be. If it's any comfort, know that other people have gone through this too. You may have even recognized the look in their eyes, half-feeling an odd kinship, but quickly began to think about something else. You know what I mean. Standing in a checkout line and glancing at the profile of a person in front of you, trying not to stare. Stopped at a red light and looking at the driver next to you; maybe your eyes met momentarily, then dropped downward, and you both turned away quickly as if you could make the light turn green by sheer willpower. Why even dbfl has come out publicly about hers!
I guess the only thing I would say is don't do anything drastic. You've raised it, it's yours, and there will never be another one like it. It's still worthwhile, and precious in many ways, even if only in your memories.
I know I speak for everyone here when I say we don't think any less of you because of it. If you need to talk, we're here for ya.

Oh man... that really sucks, Jag. Sorry to hear it. Take your time thinking about the surgery. Two people in the building where I work had that surgery in the last couple of years... I've never seen anyone more miserable in their recovery. What's worse is the second person's surgeon botched the job the first time and they had to go back and do it again once they recovered!

I have been doing house stuff for the past 2 weeks now Jag! My shoulders and arms were about to quit on me. Glad the weather turned rainy so that I could get a break from the outdoor work. Scraping and painting exterior windows on both levels. Plus had to fix some windows by reglazing. I think I finally have most of the woodwork outdoors treated. I have one more 5 gal. can of Thomson's water seal to buy and I think I will have it all done. That will be 4 cans (or 20 gallons) of the stuff that I have used in 2 weeks time on the decking and some of the siding on the house. So if ya get bored, I have plenty more to do if ya want to stop on by! :D

Thanks, Batts, but I've got plenty of crap around my own house to keep me going. LOL! We'll see what the specialist/surgeon says about the sinuses and all. I know quite a few folks who have had it done and said that after a solid week of absolute hell, they discovered they were REALLY glad that they had it done. Said that it changed their lives in an amazing way. We'll see. I have an incrediblly high pain threshold, so I might get off easier than most folks. Maybe not. Any way, speaking of cranking on the workouts, wait until you see tonight's!
The Workout
Well, I came home and got changed for my workout and then sat down in my computer chair for a few minutes...and fell asleep. LOL! I was only out maybe ten minutes or so. Guess I needed a little cat nap. After that, I got up and moving and cranked out one of the best chest workouts I've had in a long time (and I don't really have crappy chest workouts). Here's how it went:
Preface: 30 second stretch from multiple angles after each segment/exercise followed by a tight flex/squeeze on the appropriate muscle group to really flush the blood in there. Kept rest times between 45-60 seconds.
Jump rope - High speed for 45 seconds, rest for 15 seconds. I repeat this over and over for five full minutes. It's a good light warmup and gets the blood pumping. I do this before every workout.
Ab's Superset
Weighted Crunch - 35 lbs. 2 inches in front of face - 3x10
Weighted V-Ups - 35 lbs. in hands.
Kimsquit's Reverse Grip Hammer Style Incline DB Presses (http://forum.bodybuilding.com/showpost.php?p=8533921&postcount=63) - 70 lbs. (each DB) 6x3 - Up 5 lbs. on these bad boys for a new PB!!!!
Flat DB Bench - 115 lbs. (each DB) 6s3 - Finally broke my 110 lb. plateau on these!!!!! Up 5 lbs. to 115! New PB for sure!!!! I was stoked after this!
Incline DB Flies -70 lbs. (each DB) 6x3 - Switched these up to an incline rather than a decline for ****s and giggles.
Close Grip Bench - 210 lbs. 6x3 - Up 5 lbs. from my previous top working weight on these. New PB, baby!!!!!
Cross-Bench DB Pullovers - 100 lbs. 6x3 - These felt really great tonight. No shoulder issues, and a GREAT pump! :)
Weighted Dips -90 lbs. on Grizzly Belt 6x3 - Alternated between a chest focus and a tri's focus on every set. Up 5 lbs. to break my plateau on these. TWO PLATES! PB!!!!!
PWO Shake and then 15 minutes of cardio on the epileptical. Hit this hard!
PWO stretch and cool down/stretch.
Total lift time: 68 minutes.
GREAT workout. Made some major advances in my weights tonight. Great pump and burn in the right places. Onward and upward. Now it's time to go eat. Lady Jag's got some nice pasta with meat sauce waiting for me. :D

I think I'll listen to my body a little bit more when it's asking for that little catnap like that after work. Seems to have done me a world of good!
Okay, funny story time. After Lady Jag got home from her Pilates class last night (which she's still loving, by the way) she set about making some dinner for us. I stepped back into my computer room for a few minutes and when I came back out she was standing in the kitched with a spoon in one hand, my jar of coconut oil in the other and the most disgusted look on her face I think I've ever seen. Yep. LMAO! She ate a big ol' spoon of coconut oil straight. I almost threw up from laughing so hard. For those of you who haven't tasted coconut oil straight before, it's not the most pleasant of flavors. It smells really good, but it doesn't taste like you think it would from the smell. It's really good in shakes and in recipes and such, but to eat it straight ain't all that tasty. Lady Jag found this out last night. LOL! She said she thought it would taste like coconut milk or something. It reminded me of the time when I was a kid (and I think all kids do this) and I found that BIG bar of cooking chocolate in my Mom's cupboard and took a big old bite out of that sucker. Hehe! :D
Today is legs and shoulders day after work. Looking forward to it. Have a great Thursday, folks!

Hey ya'll. Felt primed and ready for tonight's workout and hit it hard.
Ab's Superset - 3x10
Weighted V-ups w/35 lb. plate in hands - 3x10
Hanging Leg Raises- 3x10
Barbell Squats – W/U 1 - 185 x 8; W/U 2 - 275 x 10; 370 @ 4x6 - Back up to my previous best working weight on these, FINALLY! The left inner thigh seems to be on the mend, slowly but surely and felt pretty good digging into these tonight. My ROM wasn't quite as good as I would have liked on the last set, but I won't complain too much since I haven't done this weight in WEEKS!
Donkey Calf Raises - 245 lbs. 6x10 - Up 5 more lbs. New PB on these mutha's! Nasty burn on every single set.
Laying Leg Curls - 130 lbs. 6x3 - Up 5 lbs. New PB!. Hammies were screaming after these things.
Leg Extension - 175 6x3 - Up 5 lbs. New PB!!!. Nice finish tot he legs.
DB Military Press – 65 lbs. on each DB -6x3 -Up 5 lbs. Yep.....New PB!!!!!
BB Shrugs - 315 -6x3 - Alternated between a close and shoulder-width grip. 3 count at the top of each rep and held the bar at the bottom for 10 on each set. Fried traps. ANNNNND....I finally broke my plateau on these. Up 5 lbs. New PB!!!!.
Seated Side Lateral Raises - 30 lbs. -6x3 -- Ooof!
Incline Double DB Row/Reverse Fly - 30 lbs. 6x3 -- Alternated between these two exercises on these. Double oof!
Stretched out and cooled down and then got my PWO Supershake(tm). No extra cardio tonight after all that.
Total Lift Time - 67 minutes. (abs/warmup not included)
So, I keep inching my way up on the weights, slow and steady. This was a kick-ass workout and I was very happy with it. Hope everyone had a great week! Tomorrow is Friday!!!! Whooo! :D

Thanks, man. I'm making forward progress and challenging myself, and that's really what matters to me. My diet is a pretty standard clean bulk (my idea of one, actually). I was trying to figure out a way to sum it up for folks who have asked and then Machine Gunn posted This Article (http://www.t-nation.com/readTopic.do?id=1021940) yesterday in GSC's journal and it's pretty damn near to what I've been doing all along. I tend to shoot for a higher EFA intake and dabble with some carb cycling, but otherwise it's fairly accurate (other than the carbo-whatever crap they're hawking in that article).
Well I'm jealous.

Had a hard time getting my ass in gear for this workout today. Guess my body knows it's the weekend! :D Once I got rolling, though, it went pretty well:
Preface: 30 second stretch from multiple angles after each segment/exercise. Kept rest times between 60-75 seconds. Also tried to slow negatives on every rep of most exercises when I was able to.
Jump rope - High speed for 45 seconds, rest for 15 seconds. I repeat this over and over for five full minutes. Good light warmup.
Ab's Superset
Weighted V-Ups w/35 lb.plate - 3x10
Weighted Crunches w/35 lb. plate 2 in. from face - 3x10
6x4 - Shoulder Width Grip Pullups - BW + 35 lbs. on Grizzly Belt - Kept the weight I added on these last week, but added another rep to each set. PB!!!!
6x4 - Lat Flies - BW + 35 lbs. on Grizzly Belt -Kept the weight I added on these last week, but added another rep to each set. PB!!!!
6x4 - Hammer Grip Sternum Pullups - BW + 35 lbs. on Grizzly Belt - Kept the weight I added on these last week, but added another rep to each set. PB!!!!
Got a really good stretch on the latissimus and scappula in after each exercise and especially after the whole lat routine.
Hyperextensions - 45 lbs. @ 6x4 - Up 10 lbs. for a new PB. Kind of wanted to do deads today but I went for **** on these and got a nice lower back workout.
T-Bar Rows - 6x4 @ 145 - Upped the weight by five pounds on these and added another rep to each set. New PB! :D I realllllly love these. I need to go get a v-bar handle for doing them. Right now I'm rolling a towel up nice and tight to grip under then barbell, which works well, but I would be more comfortable and probably be able to do more weight with a v-bar handle. T-bar rows absolutely rock, though.
Incline DB Hammer Curls - 55 lbs.@ 6x3 - Nice form on these. Tried to do 60's but couldn't quite manage it in the incline position.
Straight BB Curl - 120 - 6x3 - GREAT pump off of these tonight.
DB Preacher Curls - 35 lbs. DB's - 6x3 - Do these off my incline bench. Great burn and pump afterwards.
Stretched out real good during cool down and then got my PWO Supershake(tm). Wasn't quite up for cardio after all that. I'll do a little tomorrow morning. Whew!
Total Lift Time - 67 minutes
I'm going to switch things up to 4x10's next week, living up to my vow for periodization every two weeks come hell or highwater, even though I'm really making great progress with the 6x3's. I may come back to these after I run a round of 4x10's. We'll see how I feel. :D

There won't be any PB's next week, since I'm jumping to 4x10's for a week or two and will have to deload on the weight in order to do it. If you call around to a few of the butchers in your area that do butchering and packaging for local folks who slaughter beef cattle, they might be able to give you some contacts for someone who would sell you a couple sides of lean, hormone and steroid-free beef. Just a thought. :)
Speaking of lean, hormone and steroid-free beef, we got the cows on my folks' property all taken care of last night with wormer and vaccinations. Then we celebrated by grilling burgers. LOL! I had fun playing with my niece and nephews. I took 'em all squirt guns and turned them loose on their dad (my brother). I'm the fun uncle. :D I kept it fairly low-carb yesterday, sticking with the green salad and coleslaw rather than potato salad and chips, but I did eat two burgers. I decided to forego my usual bedtime casein shake last night because I was still absolutely stuffed from dinner. In doing so, I also didn't take the GABA before bed for the first time in over a month and I slept GREAT. I think I may need to start cycling the GABA every other night or something, rather than taking it every night. I think it's cumulatively leaving me a bit groggy some mornings.
At any rate, it's Monday already. Where the hell did this weekend go?

Thanks, Ed! I don't know if I've ever published the ingredients of my PWO Supershake(tm) or not (I may have in my old journal). So, just for you, here it is:
Two scoops ON 100% Whey Gold Protein (I prefer the chocolate flavor)
Water (speeds absorption more than milk)
1/2 a scoop of powdered Gatorade (I use this in lieu of dextrose or maltodextrose because it's cheap and easy to find, but maltodextrose would probably be even better if you can get it)
4 G's of L-Glutamine
1 Banana or 1/3 cup of frozen blueberries for an additional fructose blast to drive the protein into the muscles (and because it tastes good)
On my high carb days, depending on how carb depleted I'm feeling, I'll also put in a couple scoops of rolled oats that have been pulverized in a coffee grinder
Blend until nice and smooth. Voila! Supershake(tm).
Switching up to the 4x10's tonight. These things are ass-kickers, so it should be a fun workout. Hope ya'll are doing great on a Tuesday!

Got to bed a little too late last night and was subsequently wiped out by the time I got home from work. I grabbed a little 15 minute cat-nap and that seemed to help a little bit. Dragging ass on 4x10 day is not a good thing. Once I got rolling, I had a really great workout, though. Felt nice to deload the heavier weight and up the reps quite a bit. The 4x10's are ass-kickers, there is no doubt. I felt more than sufficiently challenged tonight. Here's how it went.
Timberwolf's Hanging Wipers (http://forum.bodybuilding.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=298994&d=1146155242) - 3x10
Weighted Crunch - 35 lbs. 2 inches in front of face - 3x10
Gave the Hanging Wipers that Timberwolf shared in his journals a go. Did 'em off the Power Rack. Had to keep my legs tucked a bit because of the ceiling, and my form was a little questionable since these were my first time but holy CRAP are these a killer! No wonder Timber's got the ab's that he does!
Kimsquit's Reverse Grip Hammer Style Incline DB Presses (http://forum.bodybuilding.com/showpost.php?p=8533921&postcount=63) - 55 lbs. (each DB) 4x10 - My pec's were screaming by the time I got to the last of these. LOL!
Flat DB Bench - 80 lbs. (each DB) 4x10 - I'm gonna be sore tomorrow.
Incline DB Flies -55 lbs. (each DB) 4x10 - Kept the incline I switched to last week, rather than going back to decline. I'm liking the extra attention to my upper chest at the moment.
Reverse Grip Bench - 175 lbs. 4x10 - I felt like I had giant charlie-horses in my tri's after these. LOL!
Cross-Bench DB Pullovers - 80 lbs. 4x10 - I was pumped beyond belief after these. My arms were also about useless as the tri's were just totally fried. SOOOO close to failure by the end of the last two sets. Wasn't sure I'd finish.
Dips -Bodyweight @ 4x10 - I didn't eve think I had enough gas for these tonight, but I managed to get 'em.
PWO Shake and then 15 minutes of cardio on the epileptical. Hit this hard!
PWO stretch and cool down/stretch. I'm toast, now. :D
Total lift time: 61 minutes.
So, a really killer workout, even if I was a bit lethargic at the beginning. I think I'll be getting to bed at a reasonable hour tonight. Heh! Happy Hump Day's Eve, everyone!

Hey Jag, just droppin by before I head off to the gym. I'm finally goin' to give Kimsquit's incline db hammer presses a try tonight.
Heya, BS. Let me know how you liked those things!
Was a busy day at work. Lot's going on and not enough time to do it. Unless it's a dire emergency, though, I refuse to put in 12-16 hour days on a regular basis. That should not be the standard (though it is for some people I work with who don't seem to know how to do that work/life balance thing). So far that strategy has worked well for me. No one ever laid on their death bed wishing they'd worked more and spent less time with their family and friends.
Got out for a 25 minute walk with the dog this afternoon since I was working from home. He enjoyed getting out and about quite a bit. Seems to do wonders for his attitude when we walk him more regularly or at least take him on car rides. Had a nice dinner with Lady Jag (salmon & brussell sprouts...mmmmmm) and relaxed a bit. After my shower, though, Lady Jag went to take hers and discovered the toilet in our master bath leaking water everywhere, which was odd since it wasn't doing so while I was in there. Upon closer inspection we discovered a nice little crack in the tank. Bizarre. There hasn't been any impact to it, so who knows how it happened. So, looks like I have a project to attend to this weekend. Fun, fun!
Hope ya'll had a nice Hump Day!

Heya, Flynn! Good to see you! How's the back holding up?
happy Thursday Jag
I bet a bit more fibre in your diet would put less stress on your toilet's plumbing
LOL! Last night my wife said that if I didn't eat so much protein that the tank probably wouldn't have cracked. :D The good news is that it's looking like I can get a replacement for the tank for relatively cheap, which would be better than replacing the entire toilet, for sure.
So, I've been experimenting with a bit of carb cycling the last month or so, running a couple of no-carb days per week. Based on some things that timberwolf has shared, I really started gearing things towards more EFA's and keeping the protein intake at about a 2 to 1 ratio over carbs and EFA's combined and taking in carbs mostly when I'm really going to need them with the intention of trying to teach my body to burn fat as fuel as well as carbs. I was starting to get a bit more bulk in my belly than I wanted from this continuous clean bulk that I've been on, which didn't bode well for swimsuit season. But, I also really didn't want to run a full-blown cutting cycle, either. Then aqua-beowulf shared an article on Timed Carb Dieting (http://ironaddicts.com/forums/showthread.php?t=3398) in his journal that really formalized a lot of what I had been doing. I've been very happy with this approach, too. In the past two weeks, I've lost quite a bit of the excess fat I've been carrying without suffering any muscle loss or impact to my strength levels. And, I haven't lost any weight, either, which tells me I'm getting more muscle conversion from my workouts (and I'm starting to see that in the mirror as well). In short, I've managed to jump start things a bit more with some modest dietary changes and am feeling and looking better for it. I'm still rather a novice-intermediate when it comes to the dietary aspects of what we do, and I'm enjoying learning what my body will respond to.
Happy Thursday, folks!

The Workout
Felt pretty good today for this workout. A little bit lethargic, but that faded once I got going.
Preface: 30 second stretch from multiple angles after each segment/exercise followed by a tight flex/squeeze on the appropriate muscle group to really flush the blood in there. Kept rest times between 45-60 seconds.
Jump Rope - 45 seconds on, 15 seconds rest. Did this circuit just a couple of times before I decided I better save my energy for the workout tonight.

Weighted Crunches w/35 lbs. plate in front of nose - 3x10
SuperSet - 4x10
BB Lunges - 115
ATG Barbell Squats – 115
Oh my God these things killed me tonight. LOL!
BB Calf Raises - 235 lbs. 4x20; did 'em in my power cage standing on a couple weight plates on my tippy-toes. Kind of like doing them in a Smith Machine without the Smith Machine. How's YOUR balance? :D Wicked burn on my calves with these.
SLDL - 125 lbs. 4x10 - These always leave me walking funny the next day. I don't think tomorrow is going to be an exception.
DB Military Press – 55 lbs. on each DB -4x10 - Felt pretty good on these. Did them nice and slow.
BB Shrugs - 280 - 4x10 - Alternated between a close and shoulder-width grip. 3 count at the top of each rep and held the bar at the bottom for 10 on end of each set. Fried traps, just add water.
Seated Side Lateral Raises - 20 lbs. - 4x10 -- Did these seated tonight to really isolate the delts. Yowza!
Incline Double DB Row/Reverse Fly - 20 lbs. 4x10 -- Did these on the bench as well for more intense isolation.
PWO Supershake(tm) and stretch during cooldown. No cardio tonight after that leg workout. Yeeesh!.
Total Lift Time - 65 minutes.
So, solid workout. These 4x10's really kick my ass, I tell ya. Good for breaking things up from the heavier weight. Hope ya'll had a great Thursday!

Thanks, dbfl. I'm doing the wipers off the pullup bars on my Power-Rack. The ceiling is a little bit low but I'm making them work. Killer ab exercise. I thought I'd cornered the market on brutal ab exercises with my weighted v-ups, but these take the cake. I think you'll like them if you can figure out a way to do them.

Ok... so your back isn't resting against a wall then? I'm trying to figure out how to get into a starting position. About the only thing in gym that might work is the narrow grip pull-up bars that are suspended between the two cable stations. Sort of like the one here: http://www.ironcompany.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=1998
I'm not sure that will work.

No, I'm not resting my back against a wall. I'm just standing on my bench, grabbing ahold of the pullup bars and then pulling my legs up in the air to the starting position. The pullup bars on that cable station ought to work just fine for this.

I don't know if "fun" is the word I'd use for it, but it's definitely effective. My legs are sore as hell this morning!

LOL! Yeah, the toilet tank is on my list of things to fix, today. Heh! :D
Felt really funky this morning when I got up. Really wanted to just stay in bed. Very groggy and almost a bit feverish. Feeling a little bit more like myself after a good breakfast, though. My CNS might be recooping from yesterday a bit or something.
Got an appointment with Sinus Doc #1 this morning. His nurse was a little shocked when I said I was going to also see another Sinus Doc before I decided who to use, so it'll be fun to see his reaction as well. :D What can I say? I'm a comparison shopper.
At any rate, it's Friday and a beautiful day here in the jungle. Sunny and warm. Nice. Have a good one, folks!

Could be sinusitis or some other sinus disease.

:D That happens to me pretty much every time I do that lunges/ATG squats superset. Delightful, ain't it? :D
The Workout
Didn't have time to post this yesterday as we went and met some friends for a beer not too long after my workout. I was pretty run down yesterday for whatever reason, and woke up yesterday with a nice charliehorse under my left shoulderblade AND a nasty sinus headache. Took me awhile to get into the groove of this workout but did fairly well once I got going. I started losing a lot of gas after the first bicep exercises and struggled through the last sets of those. I DID find out that doing deadlifts with a sinus headache is excruciating, though, but will eventually help your sinuses clear up. :D
Hanging Wipers - 3x10
Swiss Ball Crunches - 3x10
4x10 - Shoulder Width Grip Pullups - BW
4x10 - Lat Flies - BW
4x10 - Hammer Grip Sternum Pullups - BW
That was a lot of pullups!
Rack Deads- Warm-Up 1 - 135x10 /Working Sets 210 -4x10 - These, combined with my sinus headache, reminded me that I am mortal.
T-Bar Rows - 4x10 @ 125 - Really felt these yesterday.
Hammer Incline Curls - 40 lbs. DB's - 4x10 - Did pretty good with these and then started really losing energy on the last set.
Straight BB Curl - 100 - 3x10 - I was dragging ass on these, and only managed 3 sets, but was glad I stuck to it.
DB Preachers - 25 lbs. - 3x10 - Preachers on the incline bench. Only 3 sets. I was wiped afterwards. I think my sinus headache took it's toll on my energy levels, finally, though it was pretty well gone after this.
Full body stretch during cool down and then my PWO Supershake(tm). No cardio.
Total Lift Time - 70 minutes
So, not a stellar workout but not a bad one, either. That sinus headache took my energy levels down quite a bit, but at least it went away thanks to the exercise.
Speaking of sinuses, I saw Sinus Doc #1 on Friday. Not impressed. My appointment was for 9am. I got there at ten minutes to 9, filled out my paperwork and then sat in the waiting room for a freakin' HOUR!!!! And then, after I got into the examination room, I waited for another twenty minutes. The place was PACKED with people. A HUGE staff and a ****load of people (a lot of kids, actually) waiting to see the doctors at this ENT place. So, the doc finally waltzes in after keeping me waiting for almost an hour and a half. I tell him what I'm experiencing. Explain to him that I get sinus headaches and a lot of mucus and that my voice gets hoarse sometimes. Told him that my GP suspected that my GERD was causing the voice hoarseness so I got scoped in December, the Gastro guy said he didn't see anything that would indicate that I was getting reflux at night but upped my Nexium dosage to twice a day anyway just to see if it made any difference (which it didn't). Then told him about the CAT scan, which he had looked at. He didn't even listen to a damn word I said, told me that the CAT scan didn't show any polyps or cysts in my sinal cavities and that my deviated septum was only very mild (which doesn't mesh at all with what my GP told me). Said he thinks my sore throat is from reflux at night. Gives me a prescription for a cycle of prednosone, a month's worth of amoxycillin, Flonase and tells me to take a Zantac before bed on top of doing Nexium twice a day and to come back and see him in 6 weeks. I start to talk to him about this reflux theory of his and how it doesn't jive with what my gastro guy (who has scoped me, mind you) has said. He blows me off and leaves the examination room. WTF? So, needless to say, I haven't taken any of the med's that he wants me to and won't do so until I talk to Sinus Doc #2 on Friday this week, who's supposedly THE guy to go see about this kind of stuff, anyway. Apparently my Mom had been to see Sinus Doc #1 who told her there was nothing wrong with her sinuses at all. Sinus Doc #2 said "Whoa! Major problems here with cysts, polyps and fungus in your sinuses!". I wish she had told me this BEFORE I went to see this a-hole. He seemed more concerned about how many drugs he could prescribe for me to cover up the symptoms and take a VERY general stab at MAYBE stumbling across treating the root cause, rather than really digging for the root cause of it all. Not cool. We'll see what Sinus Doc #2 has to say.
I finally ended the broken toilet saga, today, after damn near losing it on Friday night. LOL! Went and got a new toilet after having dinner with my folks on Friday night. Lady Jag was excited because it's all new-fangled looking and stuff. I get it all mounted over the flush and hand tighten the bolts and grab the wrench. Right side is fine and tightens nicely. I take ONE turn of the wrench on the left side and it CRACKS at the base!!! Yep. Defective toilet. Every curse word known to man and a few that nobody ever heard before escape my lips very loudly. At this point it's 10:30 at night and not a damn thing to do about it, and I'm wiped out so I hit the showers and call it a night. I left the damn thing alone altogether yesterday because I was still so goddamn pissed that the new toilet broke like that. But, I got up this morning and pulled the new yet broken toilet out of the bathroom and repackaged all the pieces and took it back to the home improvement store for an exchange. Got the new toilet back and dropped it off at the house and then spent the day with Lady Jag shopping for some new clothes (it seems the majority of my summer clothes no longer fit me anymore thanks to all this weight-heavin' I've been doing, so I had to shell out for a new summer wardrobe) and then got the new toilet installed while she was at work with little incident. Throw in some laundry and light house cleaning and it was a full day.
Back into the fray tomorrow, kids, so get your rest! Hope you had a great weekend!

Jag, owning a home is great isn't it? I'll trade ya, my 9 new windows for 1 crapper. My dad was a journeyman plumber before he took the maintenance job at GM, so fixin' the ****ter is an easy job for me. I hate framing and every time I start a job on this house, it turns into a damned fiasco!! They drove 5-600 BRASS tacks into the floor in the kitchen, used tar paper as underlayment and concealed fire and water damage. The previous owners got to pay for the new kitchen and roof, bastages!!
Nice looking workouts bro, I have 1/2 a new summer wardrobe, gonna get the rest when I finish the cut and stay there this time.

Thanks, Greenie! I've been using my 15 lb. standard size bar for T-Bar rows, mostly because it's a shorter length and fits in my little rig for securing the unweighted end. Besides, I hate to see it sitting in the corner all lonely and wanting to be used. :D
The Workout
Felt pretty good for my workout today. My strength levels were just a hair on the low side, but what seemed to hold me back more than anything today was a little aching in my joints. Might be due to going from the lighter weights and 4x10's from last week to the heavier weight this week. A couple of aspirin tonight oughta help. Still, it was a good workout.

NO ABS THIS WEEK! (Yahooo!)
Kimsquit's Reverse Grip Hammer Style Incline DB Presses (http://forum.bodybuilding.com/showpost.php?p=8533921&postcount=63) - 70 lbs. (each DB) 3x6- Very nice burn to these, tonight.
Flat DB Bench - 110 lbs. (each DB) 3x6,6,4+2- Had to rerack on the last set before finishing the last two, more because my elbows were hurting than anything.
Incline DB Flies -70 lbs. (each DB) 3x6 - Still liking the incline on these.
Close Grip Bench - 210 lbs. 3x6 - The tri's were swollen up hard after these.
Dips -Bodyweight + 90 lbs. -3x6 - Really hit the tri's hard on these tonight, though they did hurt my elbows a bit.
Cross-Bench DB Pullovers - 100 lbs. - 3x6 - Walked the line right up to the edge of failure on these, but not quite TO failure. Right where I like it to be.
PWO Shake and then 20 minutes of cardio on the epileptical on the interval level. Hit this hard!
PWO stretch and cool down/stretch. I'm toast, now. :D
Total lift time: 51 minutes.
So, solid workout. Strength wasn't quite where I usually like it, but nothing too worrying. Probably just the switch from lighter weight to heavier weight. The joint pain did bother me, though. Could be from getting up pretty early this morning and not getting a nap before my workout. I'll get a couple aspirin in me tonight and see if that helps. Happy Hump Day's Eve, people!!!!

Finally made it into the acupuncturist yesterday. That was way overdue! Had a pretty decent workout tonight. My strength still felt like it was a bit on the low side for some reason, which pissed me off and made me try even harder. LOL! Here's how it went:
Preface: 30 second stretch from multiple angles after each segment/exercise followed by a tight flex/squeeze on the appropriate muscle group to really flush the blood in there. Kept rest times between 45-60 seconds.
Jump Rope - 45 seconds on, 15 seconds rest. Did this circuit just a couple of times before I decided I better save my energy for the workout tonight.

Donkey Calf Raises - 250 lbs. 3x20; Ouch! Up 5 lbs. New PB! (Had to get at least ONE of those this week! :D )
Lying Leg Curls- 125 lbs. 3x6 - Nice squeeze at the top of every rep. Hit those hammies hard!
Leg Extensions - 175 - 3x6 - Nice finish to the leg routine.
DB Military Press – 60 lbs. on each DB - 3x6 - Felt pretty good on these. Did them with some reverse negatives in there. Nice burn.
BB Shrugs - 315 - 3x6 - Alternated between a close and shoulder-width grip. 3 count at the top of each rep and held the bar at the bottom for 10 on end of each set. Fried traps, just add water.
Seated Side Lateral Raises - 30 lbs. - 3x6 -- Ooooooooffffff!!!!!!
Incline Double DB Row/Reverse Fly - 30 lbs. 3x6 -- To quote Austin Powers: "Aaaaaaand I'm spent!".
PWO Supershake(tm) and stretch during cooldown. No cardio tonight after that leg workout. Yeeesh!. I don't feel too bad about that, though, because I got a nice 30 minute power walk in yesterday on my lunch hour.
Total Lift Time - 65 minutes.

Thanks, asoto, Gunn, Hibby, Joe and dbfl! Went and saw Sinus Doc #2 today. He now becomes Sinus Doc #1 because the other guy is now officially dead to me. The guy I saw today was outstanding. VERY thorough and sat down and walked me through the cat scan, did a nasal endoscopy and gave me a good education on how things are supposed to work and how they're working for me. What it comes down to is some severe structural issues in my nasal and sinus passages that amount to all of the sinus and breathing issues that Iv'e been having. He says that they get worse as you get older, which is why they've bothered me more in the last six months than before. So, bottom line, I'm going to need to get the surgery done. The cool part is that he uses state of the art techniques that don't require packing your nose with 500 feet of gauze afterwards (no gauze at all, actually), and have you back up and running in a few days. I was impressed with him. He looked at all the things I've done to this point, and listened to me and then really explained things in great detail so that I could understand them and how they were affecting me. Like I said, I was impressed with him. He knows his **** and I won't have an issue letting him do his magic in the operating room as it could mean a huge improvement in my quality of life. The guy that's dead to me, well....I'd never let him touch me with a surgical tool.
So, he wants me to go ahead and run the two weeks of amoxicillin and predisone that the guy who is dead to me prescribed, just to get some of my swelling and other issues down and then we'll start figuring out when to do the surgery.
Been a great day, today. Celebrating Mom's Day tonight with the family since my Mom has to go out of town tomorrow to see my Grandfather who's having some stress tests done next week and be there for him for those. Hope ya'll had a great Friday!

Thanks, dap. I was really impressed with this guy. No way in hell I'd let some maniac touch me with surgical implements if I don't trust him or think he knows what he's doing. This one definitely does. I'm trying to map out when I can do this surgery. I was aiming for the week of June 19th and then the A-Holes at my local District Court decided to send me a Jury Summons today in the mail for that very timeframe. I get hit about three freakin' times a year for jury duty. Jeeeez! The trouble with this is I'm conviction happy (Defense Attorney's HATE me), my brother and many of my friends are cops, and I happened to have WORKED for this particular District Court's Clerk's office when I was just out of school so I know most of the judges and attorney's. Let's see how fast they boot me from the jury panel. :D

The Workout
Well, got a few things done around the house this morning, including putting some shingles back on the roof where the wind had come up real strong a couple weeks ago and flipped a few of them off the roof and dismantling the clothes dryer and using the shopvac to remove what was enough lint to make enough small mattress with. It's a wonder we hadn't had a fire in the dryer! Yeeesh! At any rate, it's actually drying clothes again, so we're back in business. After that, had a bit of lunch, let it digest a bit and then went for **** in the weight room. Here's how it went:
Preface: 30 second stretch from multiple angles after each segment/exercise. Kept rest times between 60-75 seconds. Also tried to slow negatives on every rep of most exercises when I was able to.

Really nice pump on these, today. Got some slow and double-pump reps in as well.
Rack Deads- Warm-Up 1 - 185x8 /Warm-up 2 - 275x8/Working Sets 325 - 3x6 - Up 10 lbs. from my previous highest working weight for a NEW PB!!!!!. I FINALLY broke my plateau at 315 on these damn things! Nice! I know it's not a monstrous amount of weight compared to what some of you are moving, but I'm finally making forward progress on these again. I'll be feeling these tomorrow, though. LOL!
T-Bar Rows - 3x6 @ 160 - Realized I hadn't been counting the bar on these previously (I know, I was shocked by this revelation just as much as you, dear readers.), so I've adjusted the weight to reflect the 15 lbs. bar I'm using. I've been using a rolled up towel as the "T" part of the bar. On my last set, I grabbed the safety-cross beam from my powercage and used it underneath the barbell and what a huge difference it made in my form. I would be able to use much more weight with a proper attachment, so it's time for me to head over to the gym store and pick up what I have in mind for this. They're across town, though, and I rarely go over there, so it'll take a special trip.
Hammer Incline Curls - 55 lbs. DB's - 3x6- Slow negatives, slow burn.
Straight BB Curl - 110 - 3x6 - Really strict form on these. Got a great pump out of them.
DB Preachers - 35 lbs. - 3x6 - Preachers on the incline bench. Again, nice, strict form. I was toast when I finished these up.
PWO Supershake(tm) and then 20 minutes of cardio on the "epileptical" on the "Interval" setting, which cranked about 2.5 miles and 150 calories with an average speed of 9.5 miles per hour and an average heart rate of 157. I was drenched when I finished.
Full body stretch during cool down.
Total Lift Time - 65 minutes
So, killer workout. Best one all week, actually. My strength and endurance finally felt truly on track for the first time this week. Maybe it was the pizza I had last night. LOL! And, I finally broke my Rack Dead's plateau, so I'm jacked about that. Onward and upward. Time to go get cleaned up and get ready for dinner with some friends, now. Hope ya'll are having a great Saturday!
Cheers,

FWIW, where I live if you get called for jury duty once then again in the same year you don't have to go the 2nd or any other time. I'd notify them that you've done your civic duty already & they should call someone else. Might not work but then again...

Yeah, it's good to at least get confirmation on what's wrong with my sinuses and what needs to happen to get it straightened out. I'm not looking forward to the surgery, but at least there is a viable option using advanced surgical techniques.

Yeah, but the downside is....you have to live with a lawyer. :D LOL!

You were of the same mind as me on this, Joe. Here the rules state that if you've been called for jury selection in the last 24 months, you don't have to serve again. A quick call to the jury selection office this morning cleared things up and I'm no longer required to participate in this jury panel. Whew!
Busy weekend around the Jag household. Did a ton of yardwork yesterday while Lady Jag planted flowers and then we tore down our back fence and reset the fence posts with some concrete since it was sagging and got it cobbled back together once again. Big job but it looks so much better. Made for a long day, though. Whew!
Been a crazy morning at work. The afternoon doesn't look much better. I'm off to get some lunch going before my next meeting. Hope ya'll are having a great Monday!

Thanks, JT1! At least there's hope. It's funny what we learn to live with and accept as "normal", that's for sure. Today's chest and tri's day. Moving back to 6x3's this week. Trying to figure out how to cram six full workouts into the next 9 days since we leave for Vegas a week from Thursday. We'll see how it goes. I'm feeling pretty solid on my 7th week of this stretch, which I think I owe to the periodization experiment I've been running. I'm usually pretty worn down and ready for a break by the end of 8 weeks but I'm still going strong and not really wanting a break at this point. Only the allure of a long weekend of debauchery in Sin City (and prepaid airfare and hotel) will be enough to pull me away from my workouts. :D

Ahhhhh, back to the 6x3's!!!! I LOVE this set/rep configuration. Had an outstanding workout. Particularly considering that my strength levels seemed to take a dip most of last week until I hit my back/bi's workout at the end of the week. Nice to have the strength back up to par. Here's how it went tonight:
Preface: 30 second stretch from multiple angles after each segment/exercise followed by a tight flex/squeeze on the appropriate muscle group to really flush the blood in there. Kept rest times between 45-60 seconds.
Jump rope - High speed for 45 seconds, rest for 15 seconds. I repeat this over and over for five full minutes. It's a good light warmup and gets the blood pumping. I do this before every workout.
Ab's Superset
Hanging Leg Raises - 3x20
Weighted V-Ups - 35 lbs. in hands. - 3x10
Kimsquit's Reverse Grip Hammer Style Incline DB Presses (http://forum.bodybuilding.com/showpost.php?p=8533921&postcount=63) - 70 lbs. (each DB) 6x3 - I may be ready to move up to 75's on these next time around. Sweet!
Flat DB Bench - 115 lbs. (each DB) 6x3 - Kept the extra weight I added last time I did 6x3's. The weight was perfect for me, today. Great form and challenging.
Incline DB Flies -70 lbs. (each DB) 6x3 - Nice stretch on these.
Reverse Grip Bench - 190 lbs. 6x3 - Up 5 lbs. from my previous top working weight on these. New PB, baby!!!!! (Hey, I HAD to get at least ONE! :D )
Weighted Dips -BW + 90 lbs. on Grizzly Belt 6x3 - Kept the focus completely on tri's tonight.
Cross-Bench DB Pullovers - 100 lbs. 6x3 - These felt really great tonight. No shoulder issues, and a GREAT pump! :)
Switched from water to Gatorade about halfway through my workout, and then had my PWO Supershake(tm) and then 18 minutes of cardio on the epileptical. Hit this hard, too!
PWO stretch and cool down/stretch.
Total lift time: 53 minutes.
Killer workout and I managed to keep it under the 60 minute mark which doesn't always happen when I do these 6x3's. Nice way to blow off some steam from the workday. Happy Hump Day's Eve, folks!

Got a really good night's sleep last night after going out to my folks' to move some sheetrock around for the house they're building. Two pallette's of 4x10 boards of that stuff and an hour and a half later and I was ready to come home and get some dinner with Lady Jag. Tonight is legs and shoulders, which should be interesting as my right hip is a bit out of whack. Maybe it will help loosen me up. I'm aiming to do my back/bi's day tomorrow if I'mup for it, rest Saturday and then hit my workouts Sunday, Monday and Wednesday next week before taking off for Vegas on Thursday. Had a little bit of a sinus headache after work, but got rolling into my workout quickly enough that it didn't get any worse. Had a very nice workout tonight:
Preface: 30 second stretch from multiple angles after each segment/exercise. Kept rest times between 60-75 seconds. Also tried to slow negatives on every rep of most exercises when I was able to.
Jump rope - High speed for 45 seconds, rest for 15 seconds. I repeat this over and over for five full minutes. Good light warmup.
Ab's Superset - 3x10
Weighted Crunches w/35 lb. plate held 2 inches from forehead - 3x10
Timberwolf's Hanging Wipers (http://forum.bodybuilding.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=298994&d=1146155242)- 3x10
Barbell Squats – W/U 1 - 185 x 8; W/U 2 - 275 x 8; 370 @ 6x4 - Really getting nice form on these. My goal is to keep going lower and lower on these until I'm doing full on ATG squats at this weight. Every week I get a little bit closer to that.
Donkey Calf Raises - 255 lbs. 6x10 - Up 5 more lbs. New PB on these mutha's! Nasty burn on every single set.
SLDL's - 150 lbs. 6x3 - Up 5 lbs. New PB!. Hammies were screaming after these things. I'm edging my way up slowly on these as I seem to aggravate my lower back when I add too much weight to my working sets, even though I can do much, much more for a 1RM on these.
DB Military Press – 65 lbs. on each DB -6x3 -Really felt these tonight.
BB Shrugs - 320 -6x3 - Alternated between a close and shoulder-width grip. 3 count at the top of each rep and held the bar at the bottom for 10 on each set. Fried traps. ANNNNND....Up 5 lbs. New PB!!!!.
Seated Side Lateral Raises - 35 lbs. -6x3 -- Ooof! Up another 5 lbs. on these.
Incline Double DB Row/Reverse Fly - 30 lbs. 6x3 -- Alternated between these two exercises on these. Up another 5 lbs. on these as well.
Got my PWO Supershake(tm) and then slammed out 18 minutes on the "epileptical". Proceeded to stretch out during my cool down and my wife's killer Pomeranian decided to attack me, much in the same fashion Kato used to do to Clouseau, while I was down on the ground stretching out the legs and didn't see him coming. LOL! He had me laughing so hard. He makes all these vicious growling sounds and grabs ahold of my socks and tries to rip them off my feet. Tonight he was even getting a mouthful of my workout shorts and pulling on those as well. He's really careful not to actually bite me very hard, but damn does he sound like he's out for blood. Crazy mutt!
Total Lift Time - 65 minutes. (abs/warmup not included)
So, nice workout with a few new PB's in there. Tomorrow I'm intending to hit my back/bi's workout. We'll see how I feel tomorrow afternoon and whether I'm really up for it or not. Fun, fun! Hope everyone's having a great night!

The Workout
Felt pretty good today, even after that heavy leg workout last night. Held up pretty good doing a back to back workout like this, until I got into my BB curls and then my elbows really started to ache quite a bit. Looks like a bit of aspirin for me tonight.
Weighted V-Ups w/ 35 lbs. plate in hands - 3x10
Roman Chairs - 3x10
6x3- Shoulder Width Grip Pullups - BW+35 lbs. on Grizzly Belt
6x3 - Lat Flies - BW+35 lbs. on Grizzly Belt
6x3 - Hammer Grip Sternum Pullups - BW+35 lbs. on Grizzly Belt
Really nice pump on these, today. Got some slow and double-pump reps in as well.
Rack Deads- Warm-Up 1 - 185x8 /Warm-up 2 - 275x6/Working Sets 330 - 5x3 - Up 5 lbs. from my previous highest working weight for a NEW PB!!!!!. I couldn't get that sixth set on these, though. My back was telling me "Enough, already! Unless you don't want to be able to walk tomorrow!!!" Heh! Still, cool to continue moving up on these. I'll hit that sixth set next time.
T-Bar Rows - 6x3 @ 170 - Up 10 lbs. for a New PB!. Used a small length of rope tied in a circle for these tonight as a handle, and that seemed to work very well. Thanks for the idea, Greenie!
Hammer Incline Curls - 55 lbs. DB's - 6x3- Slow negatives, slow burn.
Straight BB Curl - 115 - 6x3 - Pretty good form on these, but these are where my elbows started to bother me tonight.
DB Preachers - 35 lbs. - 6x3 - Preachers on the incline bench. Again, nice, strict form. I was toast when I finished these up.
Full body stretch during cool down (about 15 minutes worth of stretching) and then PWO Supershake(tm). No cardio tonight. May do some in the morning.
Total Lift Time - 66 minutes
So, not a bad workout. Especially considering that I didn't give myself a full day inbetween yesterday's workout and this one. I'm considering jumping to a 5-day, one body part per day split for a few weeks after my Vegas trip prior to doing my sinus surgery just to see how it goes. We'll see. Anyway, hope ya'll have a great Friday night!

Close but no hat trick.
BTW, the term "hat trick" comes from Toronto. In the 1940s Toronto hat maker Sammy Taft offered a free hat to any Maple Leaf player that scored three goals in one hockey game. According to Wikipedia the term originated in cricket. But Torontonians like to think of it as our own.

Thanks, Joel! I knew of the term "hat trick" from hockey, but didn't know it's origins. Interesting!
Got up this morning and hit the "epileptical" for a solid 25 minutes before breakfast and then pulled a few sprinkler heads that needed to be replaced because they were FUBAR or not functioning properly. MAN do I hate Home Depot on the weekend! Too...many...people! Anyway, got 'em all back and installed and discovered that one of the pop-up rotor sprinklers I picked up has brain damage. It won't let me set it to only arc in a half-circle. It insists on going all the way around and back again, no matter what I do to the damn thing. So, I'll have to yank it and take it back. But, not today. Gotta get cleaned up and get ready for some dinner with friends. I think we're going to go catch a movie as well. I heard someone mention Davinci Code, which I've been reading nothing but lackluster to awful reviews about. Maybe I can talk them all into another movie or something. :D At least dinner will be good. It's one of my wife and I's favorite places. They serve this salmon in a coconut curry sauce on top of banana leaves that's just incredible. Hope ya'll are having an awesome weekend!

The Workout
Got up this morning and made a Home Depot run to return one of the sprinklers that I replaced yesterday, since it had dain bramage. :D The new one is working great and all is right with my sprinkler system again. Also replaced a missing board on the fence and then raced the incoming rain clouds to get the lawn mowed before the rain hit. I rocked on that lawn this morning and got it done in record time, amidst darkening clouds and quite a bit of wind. And then it didn't rain until five hours after I finished it. At least the damn thing is done. Chilled a bit with Lady Jag and then hit the weights. Jumped back to a 3x6 config for this week.
Timberwolf's Hanging Wipers (http://forum.bodybuilding.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=298994&d=1146155242) - 3x10
Weighted Crunches w/35 lb. plate 2 inches from face - 3x10
Kimsquit's Reverse Grip Hammer Style Incline DB Presses (http://forum.bodybuilding.com/showpost.php?p=8533921&postcount=63) - 75 lbs. (each DB) 3x6- Very nice burn to these, tonight. Up 5 lbs. on these for a NEW PB!
Flat DB Bench - 110 lbs. (each DB) 3x6 - Really nice pump on these tonight. My elbows were bothering me a bit during these. My body's finally starting to show signs of needing a week of downtime, since I've been getting a little sore in the elbows and shoulders the last couple of weeks.
Incline DB Flies -70 lbs. (each DB) 3x6 - Still liking the incline on these.
Close Grip Bench - 215 lbs. 3x6 - The tri's were swollen up hard after these. Up 5 lbs. for a NEW PB!
PWO Shake and then 15 minutes of cardio on the epileptical on the interval level. Hit this hard!
PWO stretch and cool down/stretch. I'm toast, now. :D
Total lift time: 50 minutes.
A textbook 3x6 workout with a couple of PB's tossed in for good measure. Not bad after a morning of yardio and outdoor chores. Holy crap, the weekend is almost over! Hope ya'll enjoyed yours! :p

A good suggestion, Greenie. I liked the feel of doing them with the rope last time, but that would be a good improvment. I think I've got some PVC laying around that would work well for that purpose, too. I'd rep ya if the system would let me.

Thanks, M. I haven't read the book and we never made it to the movie the other night. I don't think I've read one good review or talked to one person that liked the film, either, so it's probably for the best. :D

Hey, thanks, man! It's gonna be interesting!
Your surgery should go well. June 22 is my wife's birthday.
Thanks, Joel. Mine's on the 13th, actually, so at least I managed to put it off until after my birthday celebration. Wish your wife a happy birthday in advance for me.
3 weeks without lifting?
I know. :(
The Workout
Preface: 30 second stretch from multiple angles after each segment/exercise. Kept rest times between 60-75 seconds. Also tried to slow negatives on every rep of most exercises when I was able to.
Jump rope - High speed for 45 seconds, rest for 15 seconds. I repeat this over and over for five full minutes. Good light warmup.
Ab's Superset - 3x10
Weighted V-Ups w/35 lb. plate held in hands - 3x10
Hanging Leg Raises- 3x10
Barbell Squats – W/U 1 - 185 x 8; W/U 2 - 275 x 8; 370 @ 3x6 - Didn't do quite as many reps/sets on these as usual. I want to be able to walk while I'm in Vegas. :D
Standing Calf Raises - 255 lbs. 3x20 - Up 10 more lbs. New PB on these mutha's! Did 'em standing with my BB in my Powercage. How good's YOUR balance? :D
SLDL's - 160 lbs. 3x6 - Up 10 lbs. New PB!. Still edging my way up slowly on these as I seem to aggravate my lower back when I add too much weight to my working sets, even though I can do much, much more for a 1RM on these.
DB Military Press – 60 lbs. on each DB -3x6 -Really felt these tonight. Got some nice slow negative.
BB Shrugs - 315 -3x6 - Alternated between a close and shoulder-width grip. 3 count at the top of each rep and held the bar at the bottom for 10 on each set. Fried traps.
Seated Side Lateral Raises - 30 lbs. -3x6 -- Ooof!
Incline Double DB Row/Reverse Fly - 30 lbs. 3x6 -- Alternated between these two exercises on these.
Got my PWO Supershake(tm) and then slammed out 15 minutes on the "epileptical". Then got stretched out and cooled down.
Total Lift Time - 50 minutes. (abs/warmup not included)
Solid workout with a couple of PB's thrown in. One more workout on Wednesday and then it's off to Vegas for a few days, baby!!!! Whooo!

Thanks, bro. That was a pretty decent workout yesterday. I'm walking a little sore this morning. So much for trying to leave my muscles a little less sore for Vegas. Heh! :D

interesting that you bring the BCAA's up, Joel. I was doing a little bit of reading about that very thing last night. Anyone have a recommended brand that they like? I'd like to start dabbling with the dosages a bit prior to the surgery to see what's going to work the best for me.

Yeah, I'm looking forward to it. My wife and I try to go 1-2 times a year. Ordinarily we stay either at Mandalay Bay or at The Paris, but we're going to help a buddy celebrate his 40th birthday this time and he chose a new Hilton resort that's right off the strip so that's where we wound up this time. It looks like a nice property, though, so it should be fun. At least there's no casino in the lobby so I don't have to listen to the annoying sounds of slot machines whenever I walk through there. I'm a blackjack fanatic and usually do pretty well at the tables. I've really wanted to learn how to play craps, though, and our friend the birthday boy claims that he's the King of Craps (yeah...we told him that he shouldn't tell very many people that :D ) and has promised to show us how to kick ass at the craps tables so we'll see. Should be a fun trip. I think we'll be going to see the adult cabaret show "Bite" at the Stratosphere. It gets so-so reviews but birthday boy has a thing for topless vampires it seems. LOL! :D
Happy Tuessday, folks!

Thanks for the BCAA recommendations BS and Joel. I'll check both of those out as well as some of Beasts other articles (I read some of his stuff the other night, just prior to Joel's bringing up the subject). Good stuff.
I've been watching my blood pressure pretty closely the last few weeks. I forgot to mention it here, but I ran a cycle of SAN Attitude last month since Nuc had such good results with it, and finished it up about a week and a half ago or so. It was a so-so experience and I don't think I really realized any major gains off of it, though my test definitely got raised with the stuff, but it DID make my blood pressure go up into really high, almost dangerous territory. I've been tracking it over the last several weeks (I'd read that Attitude can indeed cause high blood pressure issues and since high BP runs in my family, I thought it would be a good idea to track it.). For the first week and a half of the three week cycle, my BP was fine but then it shot through the roof and has just started to really come back down in the last several days. It's still running slightly high, but seems to be balancing out as time goes on. Scary. I don't think I'll be using that product again. The funny part is that I've discovered that the majority of the blood pressure machines I've found at various pharmacies are WAY too small for my arm. I can't even get it into most of them, but I have found a couple that are usable. One has an extra-large sized cuff and I'm able to fit my arm in it pretty comfortably. The one at another place is a tight fit, though, and I don't use it because it tends to report back higher BP levels as a result. Heh!
One last back/bi's workout this evening and then it's off to Sin City tomorrow! Whoooo! Good-bye diet! :D

Hey Jag, just checking in. Sorry you have to go through surgery... and being out of commission for three weeks. But maybe a forced lay-off from the weights will be good for you. You haven't had a real long time off since you had your tat done. I'm sure all will go well - I'm just glad you found a doc that knows what the hell they are doing.
Good idea to keep an eye on the BP. I know what you mean about the machine cuffs being difficult to jam your arm into. When that happens, they often read too high. If you have a Primary Health office close by, they will check your BP for free, whether or not you are a patient there.
You and Lady Jag have fun in Vegas!

Thanks, JT1. We'll see how it goes. I haven't had that long off from the weights in well over a year. Gonna be interesting, no doubt. Good suggestion about going to the Doc In The Box to get my blood pressure taken. We've got a few of those kinds of places around here. We also have a doctor and nurse on duty where I work and I'm able to go down there and get my blood pressure checked out as well, which I did today. Blood pressure was MUCH more normal today, actually. The nurse also said that because of my size, it would be impossible to get a reading out of those machines that wasn't inflated so to take those with a HUGE grain of salt if I happen to find one that I can use.

The Workout
Felt kind of tired after work tonight and wound up falling asleep in my computer chair after I got home and got changed for my workout. LOL! Went to bed way too late last night, but I DID sleep pretty good after hitting the chiropractor's office yesterday afternoon and getting myself straightened back out again. Whew! My lower back popped an awful lot when he adjusted me and it left me a little bit sore and not wanting to push it too hard with my deads tonight, but other than that it was a great workout I had once I woke up and got moving.
Weighted Swiss Ball Crunches w/35 lb. plate - 3sx10
Roman Chairs - 3x10
3x6 - Shoulder Width Grip Pullups - BW+25 lbs. on Grizzly Belt
3x6 - Lat Flies - BW+25 lbs. on Grizzly Belt
3x6 - Hammer Grip Sternum Pullups - BW+25 lbs. on Grizzly Belt
Really nice pump on these, today. Got some slow and double-pump reps in as well.
Rack Deads- Warm-Up - 185x8 /Working Sets - 275 -3x6/ - When I hit the 275 for what is usually my second warmup set, I knew that I was going to have to make that my working weight tonight. My lower back was telling me that it was way too sore from being adjusted yesterday to do more and that if I tried I'd probably wind up popping it out of place real nasty like. So, took it nice and slow and did some reverse negatives on these which was more than enough to help push these over the edge into "wicked" territory.
T-Bar Rows - 3x6 @ 175 - These didn't seem to bother my lower back today for whatever reason. Added 5 lbs. for a new PB!. Nice!
PWO Supershake(tm) and stretched out after putting the weights away, which ate up a good 20 minutes, and then got 15 minutes of cardio on the "epileptical".
Total Lift Time - 50 minutes
Once nice thing about tonight's workout is that my elbows weren't hurting me at all, which was an improvement. I would have liked to be able to go more towards my heavier weight on the deads, but better to listen to what your body is telling you and be safe. No sense in effing myself up before I have to get on a plane in the morning. It's been a good eight (almost) week run. I've made some good progress and managed to cram the full eight week's worth of lifting in thanks to some creative scheduling. I am ready for a short break, though. I'll plan on hitting it hard when I get back and pushing myself up until the sinus surgery. Anyway, speaking of plane's, it's time to get some dinner in me and then start packing. Dressing for debauchery requires planning! :D Ya'll be good and we'll see ya in a few days!
Happy Hump Day!

Well, we had an absolute blast in Vegas, as usual. I wound up walking way from the Blackjack tables ahead about $130 or so, but as usual Vegas found other ways to get it all back and then some from me. We have decided that our friend who we went to help celebrate his 40th birthday is no longer allowed to plan vacations, though. The hotel that he picked was located on the north end of town, quite a ways from the main strip and past the Convention Center. That meant that we spent a small fortune in cab and tram fees just getting around town. Crappy location, no doubt. Still, we made the most of it. I had fun hitting the pool and chuckling at all the guys with beach muscles (read STICK LEGS). I didn't stray TOO far off of my usual diet other than all the booze. :D The biggest problem I found in Vegas as far as food goes is that I could never get enough of it. When you're used to eating every 2 hours or so, Vegas turns into a REALLY expensive town! We had some really nice dinners, though, and I was able to fill in the blanks with protein shakes and tuna snack packets. We went and saw the show "Bite" at the Stratosphere on Saturday night. It was okay for a second tier Vegas show, but was fairly amateurish when compared with some of the Cirque De Soleil shows that we have seen. Still, the birthday boy had a lot of fun and we got to meet the cast afterwards. The guy who played the lead vampire was running around and "biting" women on their necks for photos. He went after Lady Jag but she twisted his hand around and threatened to break it. He looked at me with his white contacts in, wide-eyed and gape-mouthed with his fangs hanging out and the words "What The F**K?!" were written all over his face. I said "Hey, man...she's a Dominican woman from the Bronx. You're on your own!". LOL! He gave up and let her bite HIM on the neck. I had my picture taken with some of the vampire chicks, too. The most bizarre part of the whole thing after the show, though, was that security, both in uniform and in plain clothes, stuck REALLY close to me for some reason. I've never had that happen before, and wasn't doing anything to make them think I was a threat. It was a strange experience. They got REALLY nervous and moved even closer to me when the vampire guy was harassing Lady Jag. I guess they were afraid I'd take his head off or something since she was trying to hide behind me and avoid him before she got mad and turned the tables on him. Like I always tell people, I'M not the one you need to be afraid of; my wife is the one who's dangerous. Hehe! All in all, a fun time and some much needed R&R.
Been busy here at work this morning. My co-workers conspired to give me a crappy project that nobody else wanted to touch while I was out. Bastards. They'll think twice about it when I start assigning them all action items, though. :D
I'm heading back to the weights today after about 6 days off. I'll hit it hard for the next 3 1/2 weeks or so leading up to my sinus surgery. I'm going to use my chest/bi's, legs/shoulders, back/tri's 3-day split and alternate it between 3x6's and 6x3's. I should be able to cram four full turns of this split in before I get my nostrils bored out on the 22nd of June, at which point I'll have to take at least three weeks away from the weights. I ordered some SciVation Xtend (grape flavor, since the watermelon was sold out) BCAA's to dabble with as I do think that will be beneficial not only for my regular lifting program, but to help stave off muscle loss during my downtime.
Aaaand, finally, I think I'm going to have a chat with my doc about HRT options. I've been able to boost my test a bit over the last year, but it's just not enough. I'm feeling the impact in terms of fatigue, libido and my attitude so it's time to get some help on that front. Enough is enough.
So, that's about it at this point, folks! Hope everyone had a happy and safe Memorial Day weekend!
Cheers!

The Workout
Oh, man, is the first workout after being off for a bit always the roughest. Strength wasn't down TOO much, despite the copious amounts of booze I ingested over the weekend. Still, I eased my way into things a bit and had a really great workout despite having to back the weight off just a tad on a few lifts. I was pretty wiped out after work, but this helped me get a bit energized.
Hanging Leg Raises - 3x20
Weighted Swiss Ball Crunches w/35 lb. plate - 3x10
Reverse Grip Hammer Style Incline DB Presses (http://forum.bodybuilding.com/showpost.php?p=8533921&postcount=63) - 75 lbs. (each DB) 3x6- Very nice burn to these, tonight.
Flat DB Bench - 105 lbs. (each DB) 3x6 - Backed the weight off by 5 lbs. on these tonight. Got a very nice pump out of them, though, and it was a bit easier on my shoulders and wrist as I eased back into my workouts.
Incline DB Flies -65 lbs. (each DB) 3x6 - Backed the weight off 5 lbs. on these as well, as my shoulders were complaining a little bit about going back to the lifting. By the time I was done with these they felt pretty good and back into the swing of things, again.
Dips -Bodyweight + 70 lbs. -3x6 - Kept a chest focus on these. Backed the weight off by 20 lbs.
Incline DB Hammer Curls - 55 lbs. (each DB) - 3x6 - Felt pretty strong on these. I'd forgotten what pre-exhaustion does to some of my lifts on my other push/pull split.
BB Curls - 110 lbs. - Nice pump and burn on these.
DB Preacher Curls - 35 lbs. - I do these off the incline of my adjustable bench. Very nice finish to the bicep routine.
PWO stretch and cool down/stretch and then PWO Supershake(tm). No cardio tonight.
Total lift time: 52 minutes.
So, not a bad re-entry. I was happy with it and got a very nice workout. My breathing was pretty good tonight, despite having been in smoky casinos and bars all weekend in Vegas. Made me very glad I was able to resist the burning temptation to have a cigarette I experienced from the moment we landed in Vegas to the moment we left. When we got home, the desire was gone again. Probably because Vegas was where I officially quit over a year ago. At any rate, I held on and didn't give in, though I came damn close a few times. My workout was proof positive that that was the right decision. :)
Hope ya'll had a fantastic Tuesday!

Hiya Hibby! Where are you going to stay when you're in Vegas? Let me know if you need recommendations as I've stayed damn near everywhere on the strip (and at a couple of places WAY off the strip that I would definitely steer you away from! Heh! :D ).
Glad you had a relaxing vacation. Welcome back.
Thanks, Joe! I don't know if it was overly relaxing. The true decompression didn't really happen until we got home on Sunday and sat back on the couch for a bit. Heh!
Whaddya mean? I just posted pics this weekend.
So you're saying that a small shot of my back and some pics of my arm will be acceptable, then? :D
Nice work Jag! Glad you had a good weekend bro!
Thanks, man! That first workout after being off is always the roughest. I'm definitely feeling the effects of it this morning. I can't WAIT for Friday, which will be the day after my leg routine. I'm positive I'm going to be damn near crippled by the DOMS.
Another crazy day at work today, followed by some hardcore yardio. The lawn may be harboring several large species of undiscovered animals. It looks like the Serengetti gone even more wild than it already is!
Happy Hump Day, peeps!

Hiya Mom & Hibby. I really like the Bellagio, even though some of the rich people that stay there are kind of snotty.
Been a busy few days at work this week. Why are four day work weeks always worse than the five day ones? Maybe it's because some people feel compelled to cram five days worth of work into four. Morons. At any rate, I managed to squash the big nightmare project my coworkers tried to saddle me with while I was in Vegas by pointing out that it was redundant and already covered by current process and previous work that has been done. It was kind of fun watching them have a collective "Oh yeah...". THIS is why I get paid the medium bucks. :D
Did a couple hours of yardio yesterday, despite a killer sinus headache that had me seeing double. The activity actually helped clear my headache up a bit which was a nice way to offset the hayfever.
I also got my tub of Xtend yesterday and had a bit of it before the yardio. The grape flavor is pretty good, actually. We'll see what sort of difference this stuff makes in my recovery times. I'm also curious to see how much it will help during my sinus surgery related downtime.
Today is legs and shoulders after work. I'm looking forward to it.
Happy Thursday, folks!

Speaking of yardio, the Mrs. had me working OT in terms of yardio over the weekend. I dug 15 holes for rose bushes in the concrete that is my front yard and on top of it I had to dig up the 15 bushes themselves from my in-laws yard! I felt like I got hit by a bus.
Looking forward to reading the workout as usual jag.

I feel for ya, bro. I really do. My wife has a MAJOR flower fetish, with a heavy emphasis on the roses. We've got so many freakin' flowers around our house it's unreal. All the neighbor ladies in the neighborhood got jealous of all the flowers Lady Jag planted, so they've been planting flowers left and right as well. At least our house looks really, really great with all the foliage. :)

I think that's becoming more of the norm everywhere you turn these days, unfortunately. It's kind of sad how much they try to put on people's plates, expecting people to do the work of 2-4 people for the salary of one. I've done pretty well at not falling into that trap this past year or so. My last job was like that and I'll never work in that kind of situation ever again. Not worth it.
Good to see you chose to go with Xtend. Grape ey? I'll have to give that flavor a try after I finish my 1016g tub of Watermelon.
I liked the overwhelming reviews of the product on this board and elsewhere. The watermelon flavor seems to be rather popular, though, so grape was all that was available when I ordered. I saw a few folks claiming that grape was better than watermelon, and others arguing the opposite, so who knows which is better. Must come down to personal preference. I am liking the product thus far, though. I started sipping some before my workout, sipped it throughout my lifting, and then finished it off between stretching out and my cardio. It seemed to stave off fatigue from lifting. It'll be interesting to see how things progress with the stuff.
The Workout
I was falling asleep in my chair at work this afternoon, but managed to keep myself from going into a full blown nap. Yeesh! Went to bed way too late last night, so that's probably the culprit. I'll see if I can't remedy that tonight. Was moving a little bit slow for my workout, but still had a pretty kick-ass lift tonight.
Ab's Superset - 3x10
Weighted V-Ups w/35 lb. plate held in hands - 3x10
Roman Chairs- 3x10
Barbell Squats – W/U 1 - 205 x 8; W/U 2 - 295 x 8; 370 @ 3x6 - Rough getting back into these today, but I managed through it. Form wasn't the best on the last set, though.
Donkey Calf Raises - 280 lbs. 3x20 - Up 25 more lbs. on the Grizzly Belt!!!!!. New PB on these mutha's! I definitely have not felt like I've been sandbagging it on my calf work thus far, but I decided to go for it at 280 tonight mostly because of the plate configuration on the Grizzly Belt and wanting to keep it from turning into so many plates that I couldn't get the belt on my waist. I really had to work for these tonight, but I surprised myself.
SLDL's - 170 lbs. 3x6 - Up 10 lbs. New PB!. I continue to work my way up slowly on these as I seem to aggravate my lower back when I add too much weight to my working sets, even though I can do much, much more for a 1RM on these.
Seated Side Lateral Raises - 30 lbs. -3x6 -- Ooof!
Incline Double DB Row/Reverse Fly (rear delt focus) - 30 lbs. 3x6 -- Alternated between these two exercises on these.
Got my PWO Supershake(tm) and then slammed out 15 minutes on the "epileptical".
Total Lift Time - 55 minutes. (abs/warmup not included)
So, a couple PB's in there. Solid workout. Lady Jag's getting dinner ready and I'm HUNGRY! :D
Have a great night, folks!

Mr Jag, I am going to probably ask a stupid question here but the above statement I have read a few times in your journal. I have only been lifting for a little over a year so if it's not too much to ask could you elaborate on what you do here, and also please explain what this does?
I am sure getting blood to the muscles you just worked out has got to be good to get nutrients to them and probably good for other reasons but I don't know and I am curious.

It's to increase the pump of blood to the muscles which theoretically helps to stimulate growth, as well as to help maintain flexibility. It's something ExCompetitor turned me on to. There's some decent articles about it here (http://www.muscle101.com/old_page/stretching.html) and here (http://www.bodybuilding.com/fun/stretch.htm).

-Yea i'm going to switch to grape after I finish my 1kg tub. Now that i'm heavier, I started using more scoops = $$$$$.. grr... I need a job.
I've noticed that people either really love the watermelon, or they really love the grape. Doesn't seem to be a lot of middle ground, which is odd. At any rate....get a job! :D
-Do you do alternating grip on those shrugs? Do you use straps?
I use straps for shrugs and for my heavier deads due to my slight case of carpal tunnel, which gives me grip problems at heavier weights. I use strictly an overhand grip for shrugs and deads, unless I'm warming up without the straps and then I'll use an alternating grip.
-Why do you call it the "epileptical?"
It's a running joke between me and my wife, actually. She kept calling it that when we first got it and the name stuck.

LMAO!
Well, I saw X3 last night. Many of you know I'm a bit of a movie and comic geek, but I have to admit I was hesitant about this film before seeing it because I am not a big fan of the director, Brett Ratner. He's the Master of Mediocrity and is awful at character development. I enjoyed it more than I thought I would, mostly because I think I'd underestimated it so much ever since I found out Ratner had been given the reins. Yeah, the character development is flat. Yeah, the underlying social commentary and quandary about self-acceptance and the moral dilemma of a "cure" being available gets lost under ten tons of effects shots. Yeah, most of the motivation and reasons for the battles gets glossed over more than it should have. Yeah, there are some definite inconsistencies with the characters and their powers compared to the books. Yeah, the Sentinels should have been used on Alcatraz rather than just in the Danger Room (imagine the X-Men having to deal with the Brotherhood AND giant robots who just want to destroy ANY mutant it gets near). But, for all it's shortcomings it was still a decent, if not somewhat mindless, action film in comparison with previous efforts in the series. At least I finally got to see Beast on the big screen. He was done pretty well, and Grammer did a great job with him. He really captured the essence of the character as far as I'm concerned and I even had a fanboy moment when he exclaimed "Oh my stars and garters" from the cockpit of the Blackbird when they first come upon the battle at Alcatraz. I still hate Ratner, but at least he didn't REALLY EFF this movie up like I was deathly afraid that he would.
Prior to that, we had a really nice dinner at one of our favorite restaurants with some of our friends. I had some really nice elk tenderloins that were just outstanding. I did break down and have a wonderful glass of pinot noir with dinner and couldn't resist the chocolate mousse afterwards. Other than that, diet has been spot on this week.
I'll be hitting back/tri's day in a little bit. Should be interesting as I woke up with a hell of a charlie-horse this morning under my left shoulderblade. I must have slept wrong on it or something. A hot shower prior to the workout ought to help. I've been using that trick when I want to work out earlier in the day than I usually do with some nice success. At any rate, having a nice weekend thus far. Hope all of you are as well!

Took a hot shower to warm my muscles up due to the charlie-horse under my left shoulderblade that I woke up with. That helped a bit and I was able to get my back popped, but the charlie-horse still persists. I had hoped that the back routine would loosen it up, but no such luck. I had to go a bit lighter on some things as a result, but I still had a really killer workout today. Especially considering that I'm low-carbing it today. Here's how it went:
Preface: 30 second stretch from multiple angles after each segment/exercise. Kept rest times between 60-75 seconds. Threw some slow negatives in on every set as well, just for fun. :D
Jump rope - High speed for 45 seconds, rest for 15 seconds. I repeat this over and over for five full minutes. Good light warmup.
Ab's Superset
Weighted Crunches w/35 lb. plate - 3x10
Weighted V-Ups w/35 lbs. plate - 3x10
3x6 - Shoulder Width Grip Pullups - BW+25 lbs. on Grizzly Belt
3x8 - Lat Flies - BW+25 lbs. on Grizzly Belt
3x6 - Hammer Grip Sternum Pullups - BW+25 lbs. on Grizzly Belt
Took awhile to get into the swing of these, today, but by the end of the second set I was starting to feel more like working out. The lat flies in particular felt great today, even with the charlie-horse, so I tacked a couple extra reps to each set.
Rack Deads- Warm-Up - 185x8 /Working Sets - 275 -3x6/ - This is where I really felt the charlie-horse, today. Really kept me from going heavier on these, unfortunately, but I tried to work some slow negatives in to make up for it.
T-Bar Rows - 3x6 @ 175 - I figured these would kill my back what with the knot and all, but nope...felt awesome. Go figure. Mostly deads were impacted today because of it.
Reverse Grip Bench- 195 lbs. - 3x6- Up 5 lbs. for a New PB!. I really wasn't expecting to hit any PB's today between the knot in my back and low-carbing it, but these felt really solid today. I'm going to clear 200 the next time I do these, without a doubt.
Standing DB Pullovers - 80 - 3x6 - Did these in place of the cross-bench lying pullovers today for a change of pace. I kind of liked hitting the tri's from a different angle.
Dips - 70 lbs. - 3x6 - Kep the weight a bit lighter on these today as well but got some slow negatives in the mix to compensate. Hell of a burn on the tri's.
PWO Supershake(tm) and stretched out after putting the weights away, which ate up a good 20 minutes, and then got 15 minutes of cardio on the "epileptical".
Total Lift Time - 55 minutes
So, solid workout, even with the charlie-horse. I've got nothing to complain about other than I would have liked to have been able to go heavier on the deads but better safe than sorry when it comes to the back. At this point, I'm planning to just work out every other day up until my surgery which will let me get through a few more rounds of my split before I get my schnoz bored out. :D
Happy Saturday, folks!

Well, I got my bell rung good and proper yesterday. I went out to my folks' yesterday to help my dad, who's recuperating from a bad back, drive some metal fence posts to string hotwire on so that they could expand the access the horses have to the grass in one of their pastures. For those of you who are unfamiliar with how this works, the matal posts are about 6 feet tall and you use a steel cylinder (open on one end and closed on the other) with handles attached to it to pound them into the ground. You slip the open end over the post and then go to town. It's not particularly complicated, but it is hard work (particularly when you've gotta plant 40-50 of 'em in succession like we set out to do yesterda). I've been doing this since I was old enough to do so, which amounts to about 25 years of planting posts. So, things were going pretty smoothly. I'd planted maybe 15 posts or so and was cruising right along. I had just started planting the next post and pulled down on the post-driver. The next thing I knew I was on my ass and in A LOT of pain. The only thing I can figure is that I must have hit a hell of an underground rock and it just sent the post-driver sailing up and over the top of the fence post and onto my head. I've NEVER seen a post-driver hop a post like that before. Freaky. Anyway, it damn near knocked me out before landing squarely on my right foot. Thankfully, the heavy canvas hat that I was wearing probably saved me from some stitches. I haven't been in that much pain for quite awhile. We got some ice on the head, neck and foot right away and it appears I avoided a concussion. I didn't go into the ER yesterday, but I probably should have. But, no concussion, no tingly nerve issues, no blurred vision (once I got my senses back), no unusual sleepiness and no equilibrium problems after the endorphins had left my body yesterday. So, I kept the ice going last night, got some ibuprofen in me and just took it easy. Feeling pretty good today, all things considered. My neck is jacked up pretty bad, between getting hit with something heavy that put pressure on my neck and then falling backwards, and my foot is sore as hell. The head doesn't seem to be too tender, really, which is a suprise. It's a bit swollen and sore, but not like I was expecting it to. Just a slight headache and a bit of a limp are what I have to show for it, along with a chipped tooth I got when I got smacked in the head. A trip to the dentist is in my future this week. Some Tylenlol this morning has done wonders. The good news is that the charlie-horse in my back is gone! :D
So, am I really considering working out today after all that excitement? Yeah...LOL! :D
Today, I will say Happy Monday, because at least it's not Sunday anymore!

So I guess if anyone asked you how the latest X-Men movie left you feeling, Hibby, you'd have to say "moist". Heh!

Thanks, gang. I think I'm gonna get Greenie to send me some kevlar body armor for the next time I've gotta drive fence posts. :D I had to leave a message for my dentist, who's out of the office until tomorrow. Hopefully he'll get me in this week and get this chipped tooth fixed up. I've had a really low-grade headache all day long (which was nice, since I figured I'd be in some major head pain all day instead). Enough to make me a bit tired and my neck is still awful sore. Been icing it all off and on over the course of the day (working from home has it's benefits). I think I'll forego lifting today and let my body have a little more time to heal up from yesterday's adventure. But I AIN'T happy about it!

Felt pretty good on my workout once I got rolling, tonight. I had originally intended to go heavier this week with the 6x3's, but I decided to postpone that until maybe next week when I'm closer to 100%. I was a little tentative at first with the lifting, being cautious and making sure I was really okay to be lifting given the smack on the head I took on Sunday. The swelling on top of my head is pretty well gone at this point (yesterday it was not) and is turning a nice black and blue color, according to my wife. Let the healing begin! The worst part of the deal continues to be my foot, which is still pretty tender, and my chipped tooth which I can't get fixed until Monday because my dentist is having his office remodelled. Ah well, life marches on. Here's how tonight's workout went:
Preface: 30 second stretch from multiple angles after each segment/exercise followed by a tight flex/squeeze on the appropriate muscle group to really flush the blood in there. Kept rest times between 45-60 seconds.
Jump rope - High speed for 45 seconds, rest for 15 seconds. I repeat this over and over for five full minutes. It's a good light warmup and gets the blood pumping. I do this before every workout.
Ab's Superset
Hanging Leg Raises - 3x20
Weighted Swiss Ball Crunches w/35 lb. plate - 3x10
Reverse Grip Hammer Style Incline DB Presses (http://forum.bodybuilding.com/showpost.php?p=8533921&postcount=63) - 75 lbs. (each DB) 3x6- Very nice burn to these, tonight.
Flat DB Bench - 105 lbs. (each DB) 3x6 - Kept the weight a little lighter on these tonight, just for safeties sake. Nice pump off them, though.
Incline DB Flies -65 lbs. (each DB) 3x6 - Again, kept the weight backed off just a bit. My shoulders are quite sore for some reason, particularly the right one. I think I fell on it when the post-driver knocked me on my ass.
Dips -Bodyweight + 90 lbs. -3x6 - Kept a chest focus on these. Was able to bring the weight back up to two plates on these as my shoulders felt pretty good at this angle.
Incline DB Hammer Curls - 55 lbs. (each DB) - 3x6 - Felt pretty strong on these, so I worked in a few reverse negatives.
BB Curls - 110 lbs. - Nice pump and burn on these.
Concentration Curls - 35 lbs. - I started to do some preacher DB curls on the incline, but those really bothered my shoulder, so I switched up to these. Worked these with a slow positive AND a slow negative. Nasty burn on them!
PWO stretch and cool down/stretch and then PWO Supershake(tm). No cardio tonight.
Total lift time: 45 minutes.
So, very solid workout. Especially considering I'm about one smack in the head away from a drool bucket. :D Legs and shoulders tomorrow if the planets are in alignment.
Happy Tuesday, folks!

LOL! Well, I'm no stranger to head injury (not that this will come as a surprise to ANYONE), so I made damn sure I didn't have a concussion before making the judgement call to not go into the ER after I got whacked. I'm keeping a careful eye on my condition and I already had a physical scheduled for Friday so I may wind up with the CT Scan anyway. We'll see. As far as Lady Jag, she's of the mind that it would be no fun spending all that insurance money if I wasn't there to enjoy it with her. :)

Feeling pretty good today, other than a slight headache. The foot is still a bit swollen, but I'm no longer limping. The neck is slowly loosening up and seems to be where most of my headache is coming from. The head is just a little tender, now, but doesn't really bother me. I told my wife this morning that all I could smell was licorice. She didn't think that was a funny joke. LOL! :D We'll see how I'm feeling this afternoon, but I'm shooting for legs and shoulders tonight. Fun!
Happy Hump Day!

Hey, thanks, Steve. You're one of the guys around here I really look up to and admire not only for your knowledge but for the intensity with which you train and the transformation you made to your own body. Continually adding weight has been something I've really pushed for. I don't always meet my goals in doing so, but the real muscle growth for me happens when I am always doing a little bit more and doing a little bit better than I did the time before. It's been an uphill struggle for me with that at times, fighting the low test issue, but I've been pretty happy with my progress. I'm getting ready to talk with my doc about HRT options and I suspect I'll see some good things happen with my training as a side effect of that, though I'm looking to do it more for the attitude/mood and libido issues than I am for my training. At any rate, thanks for the words of encouragement. They mean a lot.

Jag!!! I've been missing a lot in here. I'm so glad you didn't get hurt badly during the post digging incident!
Rebecca Romijin has been pretty vocal that she didn't want to do another X-Men film, which probably plays a part in why they do what they do to Mystique in the film. I can't blame her, really. 12 hours in a makeup chair and never being able to get all the blue off afterwards doesn't sound like a lot of fun to me, either. Thanks for the well wishes, though. I'm glad I didn't get hurt badly with the post digging incident, too!
Speaking of that incident with the post driver, I forgot to mention that I got a call from my Mom last night. It seems that post driver of theirs was a gift from their neighbor (who also happens to be my massage therapist). She has one exactly like it as well, and when her brother was using it to drive posts for her one day out at her property...guess what? Yep....the SAME EXACT THING happened to him! Except he got his head split open and wound up with stitches. This is bizarre. Two instances of the same thing happening where I'd never even heard of it happening to someone before. Gotta be the post driver. For one, I don't like the handles on it, which are kind of a small loop. Hard to get leverage in comparison with some of the others that I've used that have a T-Bar handle on them so you can really get some leverage and hang on to the damn thing. It also wasn't very heavy in comparison with some of the others that I've used, either, which probably didn't help when it came to ricocheting off of the post and onto my head. I think I'll see if I can find my folks a better one as a present and if they want me to drive posts for them again I'll just rent a machine for the day (especially since my Dad was staking out an area that was going to take at least 100-150 posts).

Pretty good workout tonight. I didn't go very heavy with any weight I hoisted on my shoulders as my neck is still pretty sore from my battle with the post driver. Still, I was very happy with this one. Here's how it went.
NO ABS TODAY
ATG Barbell Squats – W/U 1 - 135 x 8; W/U 2 - 205 x 8; 230 @ 3x6 - Went full on ATG today instead of trying to put the heavier weight on my shoulders and neck tonight. Hell of a leg workout, all things considered, thanks to a few slow reverse negatives!
Standing Calf Raises - 230 lbs. 3x20 - I do these in my Power-Rack kind of like a Smith machine without the Smith part. How's YOUR balance? :D
SLDL's - 185 lbs. 3x6 - Up 15 lbs. New PB!. Still inching my way up weight-wise on these. I don't want to EFF my back up by getting too ahead of myself.
DB Military Press – 60 lbs. on each DB -3x6 -Really felt these tonight. Got some nice slow negative.
BB Shrugs - 275 -3x6 - Alternated between a close and shoulder-width grip. 3 count at the top of each rep and held the bar at the bottom for 10 on each set. Backed the weight off a bit as these are kind of hard on my neck.
Standing Side Lateral Raises - 30 lbs. -3x6 -- Ooof!
Bent Over Double DB Row/Reverse Fly (rear delt focus) - 30 lbs. 3x6 -- Alternated between these two exercises on these.
Got my PWO Supershake(tm) and then slammed out 15 minutes on the "epileptical".
Total Lift Time - 45 minutes. (abs/warmup not included)
So, solid workout and I even managed to get a PB worked in there for good measure. Hoping to hit the chiropractor tomorrow and get a bit of rest in the evening. Hope ya'll had a nice Hump Day!

It's getting late but as I read this you mean you hold the bar for a count of 10 at the bottom during each rep, right?
(just thinking out loud here) So 3 at the top, 10 at the bottom, & 2-3 count lifting the bar in the shrug itself. Total = ~16 seconds X 6 reps = ~90 seconds/set. I'm assuming you don't release all the tension at the bottom during the 10 count; that minute and a half must seem l-o-n-g.

Nope. 3 at the top of each REP, 10 at the bottom of the last rep of each SET. Not 10 at the bottom of EVERY rep. It's still plenty l-o-n-g, though. :D
