My girlfriend has decided its time to get in shape, and has asked me for advice on what she should do in the gym. If it were a guy asking for help, I would have no problem shelling out some tips but unfortunately I don’t swing that way, and don’t know much about female body building. So I have come to your wonderful forum hoping to get some of your expertise.

My girlfriend is around 5'5". She wont ever tell me her weight but I will guess its around 130-135. She's not overweight by any means, but she’s not skinny either. She has large breast and decent sized butt. From what I understand, she is interested in losing fat (duh!), and toning up, rather then putting on lots of muscle like some of you talented woman.

From what I see, her weaknesses would be her legs(especially hamstrings and quads), butt, tummy, and triceps. These observations are obviously based on weaknesses regarding fat. With respect to muscle, well I don’t want to name all 600+... :)

What exercises do you recommend? Also how many sets and at what reps? She is a beginner to lifting so I want to keep it simple at first and then work her up to more complex workouts.

Thanks for taking the time to read. I look forward to using your advice to better her workout routine.

Women are no different than men in weight lifting. She will never have bulging muscles like a man without steriod use. With that being said train her like you train yourself. Start her off slow, work on her form, and full body workouts. Make sure she eats to support that. If she does not desire to have lots of muscle then keep her on light to moderate weights but enough to challenge her.

Girls are, for the most part, just like the guys in the gym. What works for a male beginner will also work for a female beginner. Look for some beginner workouts that meet her time restrictions in the gym. Good luck.

she won't even tell you her weight? wow.. I'm guessing negative reinforcement will not be one of the tactics used on this one...

^Thats what got her to the gym and is probably the reason she wont gimme the weight...

I understand she will be doing the same workouts I do since my muscle generaly grow the same as hers.

What I was looking for was a suggestion on reps (high or low) and some help with the leg workouts. I'm a runner so I tend to stay away from the serious leg workouts to keep from tightening up. Also whats a decent amount of cardio for her daily ? I'm running 5+ miles a day so I know that wouldnt be practical. I am not quite sure of a good butt work out either.

Sorry for the confusion and thanks for the responses.

I think maybe you should ask her to consult with a trainer at the gym.. Cuz i have a feeling when you recommend this and that to her she's gonna be pissed off at you.. kinda like buying a fattie a treadmill for xmas you know?

sometimes, it's best not to be the one to tell your girlfriend what she should be doing in the gym.. for your safety :D

LOL. Shes not fat, I just have a high standard because I dedicate so much of my time to a consistent effort of bettering my physical health.

That advice would have been golden about 2 months ago. Now shes ok with it, and asking for my help. Many bruises later...

OUCH!!! Let me first apologize for all those nights you slept on the couch.

and then apologize for all the slaps to the back of your head you had to endure...

I'm quite surprised you are still alive with all your limbs in tact after informing your girl she should workout to "tighten" up... :D

now... hahaha... I think you should start her with a rep range of 8-12 just like every new beginner should... Take her through your routine and give her a chance to start slow and steadily so that she does not lose interest and go binge-eatting on ya while you are out running your 5+ miles.. lol..

As far as diet, pay attention so that she does not cut out too fast and too much.. the rest i'll let the ladies chime in...

recommend too much and i'll have to worry about MY safety too :D

hahaha...

I completly agree with you regarding her diet. I'm already checking on her now to make sure shes actually eating. Her roomate is bulimic so shes more consiously aware of the severe issues relating to that.

thx for advice everyone.
