Hi Guys,

I have just had a couple of weeks off and am going to be starting my 'bulking' phase in a few days but I have been working out 'lightly' this past week and have found it a little bit difficult with certain excercises but here goes : what amount of sets do you think would be better for my routine ? I would normally perform 4 sets of 6-8 for my bench press and deadlifts (on different days obviously !) and then 3 sets of 6-8 for incline dumbbell presses, bent-over rows etc but I have found this a bit much so I was thinking would it not be better for my bulking routine to perform 3 sets for the compound movements and 2 sets for the 'secondary' execercises ?

For example for chest :

Flat bench press 3 x 6-8 (previously 4 x 6-8)
Incline dumbbell flys 2 x 6-8 (previously 3 x 6-8)
Flat dumbbell bench 2 x 6-8 (previously 3 x 6-8)
Incline dumbbell bench (palms in) 2 x 6-8 (previously 3 x 6-8)

I also perform three tricep excercises with chest 3 sets each 6-8 as well so keep that in mind ? Maybe I should keep the flat bench press at 4 x 6-8 and just change the 'secondary' excercises to 2 sets each ? what do you guys think, I hope this makes sense lol ?!

Actually I've made up my mind now I'm going to leave the compound movements at 4 x 6-8 and change all my 'secondary' excercises to 2 x 6-8 ? Thanks for all the help guys LOL !

I think people who have had success adding mass to their frame, gravitate towards personal preferences. Personally, I like the 5x5 system for my first first exercise which is always the squat, deadlift or bench. I give 110% to the fives and add two more exercises with 2 sets each. That's it.

1. Deads 5 x 5
2. BB rows 2 x 6-8
3. Shrugs 2 x 6-8

I do go to failure on the last two exercises. Simple. Intense and effective. I think you're on the right track.

Good luck with your cycle. Diet is 90% of bulking....

i have a question. If you are going for mass, wouldnt you wan to have more sets than that? Wouldnt what you are doing only bring alittle bit of mass and mostly strength?

i have a question. If you are going for mass, wouldnt you wan to have more sets than that?

HOW MANY SETS DOES IT TAKE TO BREAK DOWN MUSCLE FIBER? AFTER YEARS OF TRYING DIFFERENT METHODS AND THEORIES, I FOUND THAT A BLEND OF "HIT" AND "ABBREVIATED TRAINING" WORK BEST FOR ME WHEN CYCLING FOR MASS. ONE SET IS NOT ENOUGH BECAUSE I DON'T HAVE WHAT IT TAKES TO BE A "YATES" OR "MENTZER" AND KILL MYSELF IN ONE SET. I CAN HOWEVER GO TO FAILURE ON 5-10 SETS AND WALK AWAY SATISFIED THAT I GAVE MY ALL AND EXPECT RESULTS. I COULD NOT DO THAT IF I ADDED MORE SETS, AND WHY ADD WORK WHEN IT IS NOT NECESSARY?

Wouldnt what you are doing only bring alittle bit of mass and mostly strength?

THE NUTRITION ASPECT DRIVES THE MASS. WITHOUT ANY SPECIFIC KNOWLEDGE, YOU CAN WORK YOUR ASS OFF, EAT PROPERLY AND GROW. THE MORE STRENGTH YOU HAVE THE HEAVIER THE LOAD YOU CAN MOVE. AND THIS IN TURN IS THE CYCLE. GET STRONGER, EAT MORE, GROW, LIFT HEAVIER, GET STRONGER, EAT MORE ETC...

Everyone responds to stimuli differently. I perfer heavier weight, low volume workouts going to failure.
