I heard yoga was pretty tough.....is it?
Braindrop
08-13-2008, 06:31 AM
I guess it depends on what you mean by "tough". If you mean, getting to the point where you stick an ankle behind your neck, yeah, that's tough :)
I was an inflexible lump in January. I basically approached yoga the same way I do my workouts -- with the confidence that, long-term, doing it regularly will be to my benefit.
I'm not doing any inverted craziness or advanced stuff. I did Rodney Yee's _AM Yoga_ for the first few months, then switched to his _Back Care Yoga_ (always the first section, sometimes the second) for the last few.
I think I own *all* of his DVDs (even the ones that I'll never be able to do), and occasionally throw in something else, but a lot of them have a significant strength component, and I feel that I've got that pretty much covered elsewhere :) I lean toward the ones that emphasize flexibility -- his _Upper Body & Shoulders_ one and _Yoga: Flexibility_ are both semi-regular.
Wow, that got long.
Short answer: Yoga has been life-changing in terms of how I feel physically and how much more attuned I am to my body, not to mention the increases in range-of-motion I see in the gym. I recommend that you get the AM Yoga DVD (it's included in the Gaia Yoga Starter Kit along with mat, block & strap) and start doing it it 3-4 times/week, and commit to it for 3 months. You'll be hooked.

Worked out with Mrs. Brain today, it always makes me happier on chest day to have a spotter. After the shoulder pain from last week's incline bench, I decided to drop way down in weight and to use dumbbells, which seems to have worked out well.
My non-torn shoulder hurts like hell now, but I think it has been overcompensating for the left. Ice, ice, and then some more ice. It sucks that you're not supposed to do ibruprophen or aspirin while you're on Test. :(

Off day today. My legs are thrashed (I've done an hour of cardio 10 of the last 11 days), and I have to leave for the airport in a few hours.

Braindrop,
Don't know how I missed your journal in the past since you were here a year or more before me.
Shoulder pain has ended my workout for months at least three times since the mid-80's. The last time it happened it was after a few high rep, medium weight sets on a machine press. It didn't hurt at all after the sets and I felt a great burn. The next few days I had bitchin' DOM's, after the DOM's went away I could not do a side lateral for months, even with a can of soup.
Shoulder issues can wreck up an entire upper body workout, hope you get it healed soon........SV

Sorry about your shoulder. My labral tear is small enough (roughly 2mm) that we're really trying to avoid surgery. If I really warm up carefully, it's usually ok, but there are some days when I can't even get the bar off the catches for incline bench or military press, in which case I do something else.
Not being able to take ibruprophen while I'm doing my Stak/Test log has really made me aware of the fact that it just aches sometimes... I've been icing both shoulders a lot more (I suspect the right one has a similar small tear -- but it's not worth another dye-injection MRI to find out.).
They feel pretty good this morning, but I expect that to change by this evening :)

Hi. Just saw your journal and read the first post and last. I can relate to the torn shoulder. I tore mine straight thru last March. I had an MRI done. I didn't opt for surgery. I just didn't have the time to do it. And I have sucky insurance so...I couldn't work out or do much of anything til this September. I slowly started just doing extremely lite workouts in August. I have built up to about 80% of my normal routine. My shoulder only aches on occassion now. I'm actually glad I didn't have the surgery. But I will always baby that shoulder.
Keep kicking butt, you are very inspiring.

Yes, I'm really happy I didn't get cut on. I did the same thing in January, started back at about 40% of the poundage I had been at pre-injury. It took me 6 months or so to get back up to failure weights.
Keep kicking butt, you are very inspiring.

I will tell ya how to get past that sticking point easy. It will most likely get you more reps on all your lifts, in any lift even. I do not know how much rest you take in between sets, but if you do teh normal 2min to 3 minute rest periods, take your rest periods down to 1 minute to 30 seconds for 2-3 workouts. Then when you get to the normal rest workouts, you will have built up endurance in your muscles to bust out more reps. IT works.

In that case, drop your rest periods to 2 min to 3 minutes for a few weeks with that workout, then when you go back to your regular rest period, you wil be stronger. Cheesy way to do it, but it really works, you can manipulate restr periods to accomplish different things.

I ate and drank way too much last night...
I figured out why it hurts when I do an explosive overhead move. When I get to the top of the lift, momentum keeps moving the bar higher, and my shoulder joint was getting stretched upward as I held onto it. Slow and controlled is the name of the game.
All said, it felt pretty good. It was hurting by the last set of 95#, but only about a 3/10 pain.
The second superset is the hardest thing I do every week, beating out deadlifts by a small margin.

Hello Brian,
Checking in on the progress here! I am doing shoulder rehab myself. It is written that if you do bench presses. The shoulders will eventualy have problems. I have found preventive and recovery exercises that balance the shoulder or rotator cuff. When I do them my shoulders stop hurting. Then I slack off on the "special shoulder work". I need to dedicate these exercise as "normal exercises". Just need to get'em done! I'm reboundin now still not 100%...so I feel your pain Bro. :(

I had to mees around with range of motion and different lifts at different angles. Got back out there today. On the up side, there was no shoulder pain. I'd warmed up already this morning with yoga, which helps that. On the down side, even though it didn't hurt, there was a certain point during the lifts where the left side just shut down. Still, as long as it doesn't hurt, I'll take it.

Best day lifting I've had in weeks. The strength isn't quite 100%, but no pain.

I hope everyone has a safe holiday -- it's supposed to be cold here, but not treacherously icy like it is in other parts of the country.

First off, I wanna thank you for getting me interested in yoga, I might not be able to do all the moves right, but my body feels so much better as a whole.
I am afraid my forearm roller is gonna snap any day. The cord is made up of a lot of thin bungees surrounded by a nylon cord. It has no more stretch to it....lol It is pretty haggard looking, but it works, hell, I will post a pic of it...lol
But melting it would really weaken it.

I've built a dozen 4'x4'x12" raised beds, moved almost 12 yards of dirt, 6 yards of mulch, dug two 30-foot trenches for blackberries, planted nearly 500 bulbs, dug holes for a dozen new trees, and generally been hitting the yardio hard.

So the good news is, my wife has a hole in her heart.
It's been a stressful Q2 at the Braindrop household. Whitney (Mrs. Brain)'s hearing has gotten worse and worse over the past year or so, to the point that both her students and me were bugging her to get it checked.
A subsequent trip to the audiologist confirmed that she has profound hearing loss in one ear and moderate loss in the other. In addition to getting hearing aids (which cost more than my truck), they send her in for a precautionary MRI to make sure there were no tumors or anything physical.
The MRI showed no tumors, but the ENT guy is (thankfully) a paranoid bastard, and didn't like the way some of the brain sheathing looked. He forwards her to a neurologist, and more MRIs ensue.
Expecting a "Oh, he was just overreading the MRI." verdict from the neurologist, we're instead told that best case, she's had a series of mini-strokes. Worst case, she has multiple sclerosis.
She's now had a spinal tap, a CAT scan, an echocardiogram, and (two days ago) a transesophageal echocardiogram (camera on tube shoved down throat). A bubble test during the TEE (they inject tiny bubbles into the bloodstream, and watch them as they enter the heart) showed a small hole in her heart. Clots were forming, and then getting through, causing small strokes.
On the 16th they'll be going in via the femoral artery and putting an umbrella patch over the hole, which should 100% fix the problem (though it won't reverse the nerve damage).
We still don't have the results from the spinal tap (next Friday), but the cardiologist thinks the odds of her having both the hole *and* MS are really, really small.
Small odds, however, are not the same as nonexistent odds, as anyone who camped Raster will recall.
Nonetheless, we're tentatively optimistic.
It seems like we've done nothing but eat out and drink too much for the last couple of months. I'm up about 15 pounds, and have started to work on getting it off again. I've managed to keep doing yoga steadily, and am restarting the couch to 5k plan to try and burn some of this stuff off. I haven't touched a weight in months, that needs to change as well.

I'm not happy about letting my lifting and cardio slack, but I managed to stay faithful to the yoga at least 2-3 times/week. I'm convinced it's the best thing I've ever done in terms of how I feel.

When I was doing 3 times a week, I felt great, I need to make it one of my mainstays. Keeping the yoga will definitly help when you get back to the cardio and lifting.

Keep it up in here. You lift in your garage correct? How do you fashion a t-bar row. I am interested in making one myself.
Braindrop
08-03-2009, 06:55 AM
I fashioned it by buying one off of Craigslist. It was $1700 new, I spent 3 months offering the guy $300 every time he posted it, he finally decided I was the only taker :) It's a pretty big, specialized piece of equipment -- fortunately I have space.

Way to haggle.......I am thinking of trying to place my barbell in the corner of my living room, but then I have to worry about damaging the wall:(

Honestly, I don't see November/December as a hardcore cutting time for me. I'm trying to re-establish some consistency, and I think the weight loss will come. I'm kind of ignoring the scale (ok, I'm not, I've lost 2 pounds this week, but I'm trying not to obsess).

We spent all last week chilling in Port A. Other than an encounter with a man-o-war by Mrs. Brain's leg on the 2nd to last day, it was great. Laura Bush was staying at the same place, it crawled with secret service in black suits on the beach. /boggle
