If you had to pick just ONE multi-vitamin/mineral product, what would be the best one?

Please pick product and include the brand. Give your reasons. The best answers will be displayed on the main Bodybuilding.com site for millions of people to see!

(Note: This is not a discussion about how or when to take multi-vitamins, if you should take multi-vitamins, or why some multi-vitamins are NOT good. Just list your absolute favorite multi-vitamin product and give your detailed reason.)

I have been using Eclipse 2000's Pro Complex 24 Multi-Vitamin/multi-mineral for years now, it gets the job done and has extra CoQ10 in it. Very cheap which all multi's should be in my opinion.

The best multi on the market that I know of is the Life Extension Mix at www.lef.org

That's what I use and recommend.

I recently started using Synergy Men's which can only be purchased at V I T A C O S T. com. I like it because it includes Green Tea Extract and a lot of stuff not included in most multis. I was persuaded of the quality because the source (i.e. proprietary brand) of many of the ingredients is identified. Does anyone else use this product?

I currently use the Bodybuilder Muscle Pack by NSP. Its loaded to the brim with tons of essential vitamins and minerals, including 17 Amino acids, a time release C- complex and B- Complex over 8 hours, vanddyl slfate and many other high performance factors. Since ive been supplimenting my diet with this ive shown no signs of over training and i train 6 days a week for 3 hours a day. the cost was i believe 20 dollars for a 30 day supply

I have to go with Geoff on this one, AST MultiPro 32 is made for the bodybuilder, by the bodybuilder.

It has very high potency amounts and is high in antioxidants, which arguably bodybuilders need more of than the sedentary individual.

A quality multi vitamin sometimes loses its importance because the effects are not as noticeable as creatine or glutamine, but it is probably the best investment you can make in a supplement.

I also have used Animal Pak and would have to rate it a close second.

Opti-Pak by SuperNutrition... excellent product and it is used/endorsed by the US Weightlifting team.

Compare it to a bottle of any One-A-Day vitamins. Not "just any" multi will work, athletes need a superior formula, in my opinion at least.

Centrum Performance, made for more active people (ex. bodybuilders) and easily found at most stores like Walmart and Winn Dixie. It's a complete daily multivitamin specially formulated with 33 vitamins, minerals and herbs, including: Ginseng, Ginkgo, higher levels of 5 essential B Vitamins and higher levels of 3 key antioxidants. Cheap to!

it can do for them. To me one multi=vitamin is the same as the next, Its just do you want to pay the extra price for the name!!!

That's actually not the case at all. Some multivitamins don't even dissolve in your stomach; you just pass them through. (ConsumerLabs mentioned this in a recent test.) Other multivitamins have 100% of your RDA for various nutrients which isn't enough when you're bodybuilding and subjecting your body to stress like that. Do a comparison... this is what the vitamin I take has in it:

Supplementwatch.com just did a review on 30 or so major multivitamin/multimineral supplements. Natrol's "My Favorite Multiple" won the contest hands down, here's a thread on it:

http://forum.bodybuilding.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=78430

Comes in iron-free and iron-containing versions, capsules for easy digestion, and it's about $20 for a month's supply, great for such a comprehensive multi.

Also, the types of minerals they use are all chelated and from Albion labs. The C they use is Ester C. Very high quality. Nice supp.

12-11-2002, 06:49 PM
since i have like a bottle for every type of vitamin i used to take one of every kind of vitamin (kinda made my own vitamin pak), i read the dosage for every single one, the mg, iu, mcg, etc... and balanced it all out... sometimes i took half a centrum with all those vitamins.... worked great for me
here are the ones i used to take:

GNC Herbal Plus standardized Ginkgo Biloba
Natural (TMA) Health Erotinol (super formula for men)
Nutrilite Saw Palmetto and Nettle Root
Nature Made Calcium and Selenium
Kirkland Signature Vitamin E (400 iu) and Vitamin C
Duane Reade Vitamin E (1000 iu)(took these sometimes without the other vitamin E)
Sundown Soya Lecithin

I also used to take Solaray Multi-vitamins which was good. i dont know if i spelled it right though.....
and now i just take Animal Paks which is also very good! some people say its overhyped multivitamins but i think it helps out a lot. whenever i run out of animal paks ill start to take what i listed above with half a centrum or a full one :) just keep your vitamins balanced out!

Personally, I think it's the Opti-Pak or Men's Formula by Super Nutrition USA. Natrol puts out a product called "My Complete Multiple" that would come in a close 2nd.

If you don't want to take my word for it - or anyone elses' for that matter - get some ingredient lists and do label comparisons.

Animal Pak? I'd do a comparison with what Natrol's My Complete Multiple has in it. I think the Natrol provides everything the AP provides (and more) along with the benefits of:

1) Being cheaper and
2) Being in a capsule/powder form that is easier to assimilate

Compare the labels on the two products and see if there is any compelling reason to choose one over the other.

In most cases, the doses of vitamins and minerals in Natrol's product are significantly lower. Plus, no amino acids. The Natrol product looks good, but it's definitely geared for the average individual, and not a bodybuilder.

They cover all the basics, these guys sponsor the olympics but yet we never heard of them, They are a billion dollar company without advertising, THey spend millions a year to test their own products, supplementwatch.com rates their multivitamin the #1 by far

Centrum is a WASTE of money, take it if you want but do not expect it to keep you healthy like a real mulit-v will...don't be fooled by what supp companies or big pharma tells you, they're out to make a buck at the expense of your health!
Don't expect any big companies to give you potency and efficacy because it's not there, they have big expensive labs for synthesizing chemicals and that's what they market! Smaller health-food companies can do natural extractions of whole food plants for far superior nutrient profiles in smaller amounts!
Even the type of minerals put into multi's is confusing because it says nothing about bio-availability! Smaller amounts of minerals depending on how they are chelated can be vastly superior as far as absorption and give you much more than a synthetic multi while still not having enough mg to meet supposed RDA's because they are numbers based on weight, not absorption!
Bottom line: take a whole-food based multi and FEEL the difference!

All you guys talk about how great the numbers look and some are cheaper and then some are easier to take. But my question is do any of you notice any difference when you change multi's or go off them? What makes you think your multi is the best? Is it because you feel better or is it because you see more numbers on the label? I'm not ranting or anything, I'd just like to see why you think your multi is better than another.

I like Animal Pak for the following reasons:

1. Good amount of Vits,Aminos,Essential Fatty Acids,Digestive Enzymes.

2. Performance Optimizers seem to give me an extra jolt of energy in the gym when taken pre-workout.

3. # of pills per serving each in individual packets and canister for freshness (all these pills must have an advantage?)

4. Descent Price

5. Only tried a few other multis- GNS MegaMen, and Complex 24, So I really don't have much to compare off.

6. Cool container and the Animal articles are interesting, why not.

Optimum Nutrition's Opti-Man. (Men)

The older formulation, the newer high marketed version has too many useless ingredients that pump up the price.

(Look for the gray label)

Opti-woman (women) is good also (for women) Same thing for the new over hyped version.

Save yourself five bucks a month.

Centrum if you live in a box. Its better than taking NOTHING but still sucks. I'm taking Mega Men. Good blend of B-vitamins and certain vits and minerals and amino acids especially for men who lift weights, and you get a 3 month supply for 30 bucks. Animal Pak if you have the money, most definantly.

I've just been taking Twinlabs 1 a day multi for awhile now.

1) I wanted something without calcium since it hinders absorbtion of zinc. I also wanted something without iron.

2) The Twinlabs 1 a day multi has adaquate levels of all B vitamins, etc., etc.

3) It's in a capsule, so you know it's absorbing better than most pressed pills.

I used to take multivitamin formulas containing basically everything, but the more I thought about it the more I thought spacing them out for absorbtion reasons would work better.

My favorite high-end Multivitamin/Mineral product is the Universal Nutrition Animal Paks, they do well in water solubility testing and have everything you need and then some. There are however some large tablets that some people might have trouble swallowing.

My favorite low-end Multivitamin/Mineral product is the Sam's Club brand multi; it also does very well in water solubility testing and covers the more basic needs. Small tablet, very inexpensive.

Here is the link to the article: http://www.sourcenaturals.com/articles/5256.html

Here is a link to the biography of the author who conducted the study: http://www.comparativeguide.com/bio.shtml

Yes, tablets don't digest well at all and you lose 80% of the nutrients. I use Multitech which is an isotoic (powder that disolves in water). It is 95% absorbed in 5 minutes on an empty stomach.

I'm surprised that in this entire thread there is no mention of what is unquestionably the Cadillac of Multis - NUTRILITE! This company invented multi vitamins in the 1920's and is the world's largest producer; they use all natural ingredients grown on their own farms in California and Mexico, NO chemicals - for example, vitamin C comes from Acerola cherries, not a lab. Also, quality control is second to none. As multis, like all supplements, are unregulated by the FDA, there is no guarantee that the ingredients listed are actually present in the amounts claimed in other brands. Also, as others have mentioned, store brands like Centrum are worthless as they pass through your body undigested--ask any nurse who has experience with bed pans!

In addition to multis, they make a full line of herbals, and fantastic protein bars with only 4 net carbs. The reason that you haven't heard of them is that they are not available in stores and do not advertise. They are definitely not cheap, but you get what you pay for! A 30 day supply costs about $60, consisting of 3 tablets taken twice a day. If anyone is interested I can tell you how to get wholesale price (~$40)

You can check them out at quixtar.com using passcode 189889 - click on the shopping tab, then "My Health", then "Multivitamins" Full technical info and descriptions also available at nutrilite.com

at the time I posted which mulit I was using, I was down to the last few, so after reading through this thread, decided to switch things up a bit. I opted for GNC's Multi Ultra Mega Gold (w/out Iron) and a few weeks into it, more than happy.

however, when I was taking "The Bridge" Multi, my piss was pretty normal, but w/ these Mega Gold's, holy ****e, totally different story. and don't come on saying "drink more water, etc.." b/c I drink at least 12 glasses / day, probably more. however, was wondering if it's true, that the more yellow, the more you're actually (literally) pissing away. how much truth is there to that and if so, sources ?? GNC's are time released and highly absorbable according to some research i've done, so this runs contrary to that....plus the fact that I feel pretty good from them so a lot of the vits/mins are getting to where they need to be. I've always been of the mindset "any multi will do" but i'm thinking a bit different now.

Modern genetic science research can now provide an individual with customized nutritional program and lifestyle recommendations based on refined genetic profiling through DNA analysis. A major component of chromosomes, deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) contains the genetic code of individual hereditary characteristics and instructions for the structural composition and function of the human body.

Pretty amazing huh? You can get customized vitamins based on your unique DNA!

How do Isotonic vitamins work?
Isotonic solutions work because it is the most natural, and most body-balanced way to delivery these vital nutrients into the body's circulatory system for efficient utilization. Why? The blood stream is the delivery system to the body's cells. Only nutrients in a solution that is balanced with the blood stream, i.e. isotonic, can actually be absorbed into the blood stream for delivery to the body's cells. The scientific fact is that hard pills (High Quality no binders or fillers 10-20% absorption, Low Quality with binders and fillers 0% absorption), herbal capsules (30-40% absorption) and liquid herbs (40-60% absorption) are rejected and expelled by the body unless the body can change them into a body-balanced-isotonic solution acceptable to the blood stream. Hard pills swallowed whole go to the stomach where the body has only one chance of converting that hard "rock" into a solution and that is by attacking the "rock" with hydrochloric acid secreted into the stomach. This is why a number of hard pills cause many people "stomach upset". The "upset stomach is caused by the hydrochloric acid dumped into the stomach because the body is trying to convert a very hard substance into a liquid. Many more steps are required in the body's attempt to change a "hard rock-like" substance into a blood balanced isotonic solution. In many cases the body cannot convert the hard pill into a body-balanced-isotonic solution and peristaltic action finally expels the peanut-like substance out of the body altogether.

Isotonic is defined in Black's Medical Dictionary as follows: "Isotonic is a term applied to solutions which have the same power of diffusion as one another. An isotonic solution used in medicine is one that can be mixed with body fluids without causing any disturbance." Every solution in the human body, except excretion products such as sweat and urine, is isotonic. Tears, lymph, blood plasma, synovial fluid, and vitreous humor, to name a few, are all isotonic solutions within the human body. The body attempts to convert everything consumed orally into an isotonic solution in the stomach before passing into the small intestine where most absorption takes place. Pills, capsules, food and all non-isotonic liquids must go through the digestive conversion process. The ingestion of isotonic solutions bypasses this time consuming conversion process, leading to rapid, efficient utilization (90-95%absorption) of the ingredients that make up that solution.

Mega men vitamins from GNC are the best. 29.99 for a three month supply. .38 cents a day. they are 100% all natural and they ae guarenteed to break down with in six hours. all you centrum and one-a day user beware. those vitamins are so cheap because there all synthetic. you guys also may want to look at all the extra ingredients. your putting junk in your body. another plus for mega men is that they also have a prostate formula in them

I work for GNC so I know that those extra ingredients are what hold the vitamin together. what I'm saying is centrum has so many added ingredients to hold it together compared to mega men which has cellulose, titanium dioxide, vegatable acetoglycerides, caramel color and imitation vanilla its alos guaranteed ti break down within 6 hours

I'm in total agreement with Lebrun/Shawn. AST's Multi Pro 32x and Universal's Animal Pak are by far the two best I've ever used. I really think Animal Pak is better, but not nearly as convenient. Swallowing all those pills sometimes is a pain in the ass! You get nearly the same potency from Multi Pro 32x, only without the amino acids. Good luck!

On my off days, I use a multi by Kirkland "Signature" just to fill in for my OFF days when I dont' work out. ON days means ANIMAL PAK.

What I like about Animal Pak is that you get joint and bone support, EFAs, digestive enzymes, a boost of Amino Acids and Performance Optimizers. The optimizers get you cranked up so that you can PERFORM well in the gym and CIRCULATE all those nutrients into the muscle cells where you need them.

When I take Animal Pak, I know I'm covered and don't have to fuss with taking any other individual vitamins for the rest of the day because the PAK is comprehensive and timed release.

What I would like to know is that people who have been on animal pak and then got off of it do they notice a difference?

For the past two weeks I've been taking Utrition's liquid multivitamin, I like it a lot but then again I don't have much experience with any vitamins. Here are the details on it, I've read
a little bit(not much) and what I've read is that liquid vitamins are absorbed better into the bloodstream than regular pill form vitamins. It's also in your bloodstream within 5 minutes from what I've read, does anybody agree or disagree with this? Can I get your opinions on this multivitamin in particular? Thank you for all your replies!:)

Description
A Tast Above the Rest - Ultra Absorbable
Your Mind, Your Body, Your Health - It's All About U

Utrition’s Liquid Vitamin Plus has therapeutic dosages of Green Tea, Ginseng, Gingko Biloba & Grape Seed Extract. I've used one can of Animal Pak and people have told me that my skin looks especially clear, pink and healthy and that my eyes look clearer. I also feel better. Its not a cheap vitamin and it doesn't really compare with a one-a-day. There are like 12 pills to take, some of them pretty big. You're even supposed to cycle off of them after a few weeks. So I just take them on my workout days. I learned to just gulp two at a time so I don't get too bloated before the work out. But I found a place to order them online for $20. That's quite a bit better than Animalpak.com (http://animalpak.com/html/sections.cfm?ID=7) where they cost $40.

After taking vitamins for a while your body starts to absorb less. So its good to give all vitamins a break once in a while.

The only thing I suggest is don't take the black pill, which is the performance optimizers, at the SAME time as when you drink coffee. Taking it right after is ok. Its just too much rev IMO. Best time to take it is right before you leave out the door for the gym.

Doesn't look like to me. MCG is only a fraction of MG, don't be fooled. Some numbers are higher but then if you look its measured in MCG.

It also doesn't have the array of digestive enzymes Animal Pak has and to me this is very important because when you are loading all these megavitamins at once you need digestive enzymes or you're going to be cutting some major cheese dude.

Not to mention the performance optimizers, ginsing, pyridoxine alpha-ketoglutarate (PAK), IGF colostrum, nucleotides, lipotropics, L-arginine, Protogen A, eleuthero.. That gives you the extra pump to give you and edge in the gym and circulate all those nutrients.

but there isnt enough digestive enzymes in animal pak to do anygood. You should get those seperate if you want them to work. I personally dont want the stimulants(performance optimizers) though. and the facts on animal pak say you have to take 2 paks, or 22 pills. With this one there are way less pills.

I just had a look, they seem to just follow the rda for the most part. The few things at higher concentrations dont seem like much though. but 23 dollars for 120, if you took 2 thats 60 servings for 23. I would probably pass, theyre is much better ones out there if you are physically active. Those would probably be good for the average person because they have the basic vit + min but not much else.

He just said that about Stack. I don't know about prohormone stuff but I do know there are as many opinions as there are products. But since this thread is about multivitamins, I'll just stick to that.

About the Pak he did say it was an okay product. BTW, except for that gyno issue, 90% of the criticism of these products is that "there is not enough". Ok, if you are going to buy EVERYTHING separately then of course you would have ENOUGH but with this philosphy any one products that has a number of ingredients in it is not going to be "enough", ever. But he did say that Animal Pak was good.

I don't usually take two packs in one day unless I'm injured. I take one pack before workout, esp. if there is lifting. Going by how it makes me feel, all I can say is it works for me.

Ok i need a straight answer.... Choice is between Animal Pak and ISS Vitamin packs. Serving vs. Serving what is better? Animal is starting to get on my nerves with all their BS and stupid magazine ads. I know ISS is half as cheap but I just wanted to know what has the **** you need and not some stupid filler.

I have been using Universal's Animal Pak for about 3 months now, good stuff, expensive as hell though.

$20 for 44 Animal Paks isn't so bad. That's $0.50 a day for a lot of good stuff. Try adding acidophilous to round out the digestive enzymes.

I only take one. I use one before a workout and usually wait until lunch on my rest days.

Animal Pak is def the best. It takes the guesswork out of what you need when you are in heavy training. I use one on off days, and two on days I train, one in the morning and one early afternoon. I have taken the Animal Pak for many years and it still is my all time fav.

I noticed the difference when I started taking two on my heavy training days. I feel like I can recover quicker, and I also feel more energized, less sluggish. When you know you are getting enough vitamins/minerals etc, you can be a little more lax on eating vegetebles, and worry more about your carb/protein ratios. Don't get me wrong, I still get plenty of veggies, but it is good to know if I am in a rush I can get a good lean piece of meat and some quick carbs and not sweat the fact that I didn't have time to prepare any veggies due to ingesting the Animal Paks. As I have stated before, it is like "insurance", and you also know you get what it says on the bottle.

Universal's Animal Pak is the King of all multi-vit packs - read the breakdown of what each pack contains and it makes sense that this is the vitamin of choice for hard core bodybuilders. Take the pak for 3 weeks religiously and you'll feel a real difference in your workouts and you'll see the difference in your physique. Thats why its the best - it produces real results in the gym!

Hey Rock - I completely agree. If your competing at a high level, you cant take chances that you're not getting the vits and mins you need to win. You cover all the bases by taking the Pak. Stay strong bro. Remember : 803 aint nothin - its just iron, you got the heart to pull that!

Okay, I was curious about the tallies, so I tallied them up. :)

I only included the multis that got at least 2 votes so it wouldn't be so cluttered. There were tons that just got 1 vote, and I was only curious to see which were highly recommended as that is what most people are probably most interested in. If someone said a certain multi was a close second place, then I included that as a tally as well; Again, the purpose was to see which multis are most recommended and that counts as a recommendation. Sometimes it was easy to give the specific product and sometimes I had to improvise and go with the brandname. Anyways, I figured I would share it, so here it is.

Animal Pak - 32

GNC MegaMan - 19
GNC Ultra - 6
GNC Solotron - 2

AST 32X - 17

Centrum (other) - 7
Centrum Performance - 5

ON opti - 7

Twinlab - 6

Kirkland - 6

ISS - 5

Flintstones (especially Betty) - 4

LEF life extension - 3

Beverly - 2

Eclipse 2000 - 2

Green Source - 2

Lifepak - 2

Men's one-a-day - 2

Natrol - 2

Thanks for the tally bro, looks like I am not alone with my feelings about the Animal Paks. The results are real bro's!!!! And to Mazz...thanks for the kind words and best wishes to you in your upcoming contests. I was talking with some other guys at the gym and they are taking 2 paks everyday, I may increase to that as I was only taking 2 on my heavy days, 1 a day on off days. I also notice I don't catch colds anymore, and thats hard to do in the Frozen Tundra of the Northeastern US!!!

i always tell a good multi by what other vits/minerals and additional aminos, enzymes it has in it. I also tell by what form of Vitamin E they put in it. If it is synthetic Vitamin I stay away, since natural vit. E is the only way to go. Here is what I found.

AST mulit-Pro 32: Synthetic Vitamin E; provides 2% of the antioxidant protection of natural vit. E

-has absolutely nothing different about it than centrum, or a GNC brand as far as extras enzymes, aminos, etc.

Animal PAK: has so much more, lots of enzymes, pre workout energizers, amino acids, and yes natural vitamin E, besides how can you compare a two a day vitamin to a pack with 11 different formulations in it?

Animal PAK bar none simply the BEST!

I use a multi called Life-Pak, and it rules. They are the only company I have heard of that will actually test you for free to see if their multi is doing anything and if your antioxidant levels do not increase from taking them they refund your money.

Cheap vitamins are nothing but turd pills. It is almost guaranteed you will do nothing more than flush them down the toilet with the rest of the crap.

Hello All

I'm new to the forum and have been reading the supplement topic on and off for the past few days. This is a very informative forum because I'm a dummie when it comes to multi. It's very obvious that alot of members take Animal Pak. Natrol's My Favorite Multiple also have good review at supplement watch?

Now I'm really torn between the two multi. I start using bowflex and working out 3 days a week. I'm a newbie, so here's a dumb question. Is it ok to take Animal Pak during workout day and My Favorite Multiple on non-workout day? I figure different brand of vitamins won't conflict with each others.

Additionally, I found that the My Favorite Multiple has the one tablet a day version. What's the difference between the 6 tablet version and this one? because I will try to avoid swallowing too many tablet day. I found a website that sells it for $14 for 180tablets iron free which seems not to be good deal.

Sorry for the long post and Thanks for reading

I was taking just B Complex and the occasional no name multi vitamin but than I decided to try Mega Men. Being a single male in the military living by myself I don't get the luxury of a full course meal daily so I often don't get enough of the essential vitamins my body needs, ever since I started taking Mega Men I've had less muscle spasms and feel healthier. I like it, I'll stick with it.
Flinstones vitamins come in high second though :P

Furst of, animal pack is 11 pills, not 6.

I use animal, because I know it covers all the bases. I feel better on days that I take animal, and I train harder. Is this psychosomatic? perhaps, but does that really matter? not at all. It works for me. Try and it and see if it works for you.
