I just bought a squat rack, and the barbell that I currently have, which is 72" inches doesn't fit (the plates end up right on top of the safety pins, so the bar isn't wide enough). Would an 84" barbell fit? I mean, when you get a longer barbell is the part where you put your hands longer, or is the threaded part longer, or are both longer? Thanks.

Yes, the 84" bar will fit. The bar you have is a "short" Olympic bar, not made for rack training.

Actually I have a 72" standard bar (not Olympic) with the threaded end that fits plates with 1" holes. I can't get an Olympic bar because all of my weight plates are the plates with the 1" holes and I don't have the money to buy all new plates, that's why I need an 84" bar that will hold the 1" plates.
Anybody have any suggestions where to get one?
If there is a Play It Again Sports in your area, they should have it. That's where I got mine. I have the standard bar too. Just make sure you get the 7 foot bar and not anything shorter than that. Actually, there are six foot bars that fit squat racks, but I think you can only order them online. You'll save more money buying it at a local store. But, don't throw away your six foot bar because you could still use it for several exercises - it's always nice having an extra bar lying around.

I shimmed mine with some pipe connectors to move the plates out farther. It threaded right on (with some help from my pliers) and doesn't move. If you want to save some money you could try that.

Thanks for all the help everyone. I called a local home fitness store and they had 7' bars in stock so I went and picked one up today for $30. It's a Cap Barbell brand, which I think is pretty good. Fits nicely in my new Sumo Rack from New York Barbells.
