Hi there,

That is exactly why I like the elliptical -- easier on the joints and doesn't jostle me so much. I have never had joint pain using it. Now when I started using the machine from hell (which I LOVE!) - the StepMill, my knees ache after extreme sessions. She has several options:

-- Check the shoes. I'm not a runner but I know that the constant impact on the treadmill requires better shoes than an elliptical. She needs the cushioning and improved support.
-- Do less time on the cardio equipment that causes pain and more on the elliptical. Or cut out that equipment all together. Try substituting recumbant bicycle or rowing machine.
-- Try supplementing with glucosamine chondroitin. I take that when I can remember. My joints don't bother me much -- just when I abuse StepMill or really hit it with squats. Then I remember!
--If none of the above help, see a doctor.

It's good that she is paying attention to her body and is aware of what is causing her pain. When something is causing pain that means ya gotta back off or figure out what is wrong. Good luck!

I've seen those with the MSM added. I was wondering how much better the addition of MSM is. Have you tried the different kinds sillyvent? If so, is the difference considerable?

Glucosamine with Cats Claw (a herb lol) works wonders for me. I also use Alleviate cream which contains MSM. After rubbing in the cream, I apply DMSO liquid (four drops to each joint) and rub that in too. Before using this, I would get extreme joint pain in my elbows after certain exercises. Squats (from the position of my arms stabilising the bar), wide grip chins and heavy barbell curls were severely limited from the pain. Now, at worst, I notice some slight joint pain and most of the time, no pain at all. :)

Thanks Tatiana!

I'd forgotten about DMSO. I'll have to keep that in mind (and the MSM cream too) if my joints don't improve. I remember years ago (back in the 70's) going with my family to take my grandma from Nebraska (we're in TX) down to the feed store to get some of that for her rheumatoid arthritis. I guess they couldn't get it up there. Strange how I remember that little tidbit!

as far as i understand, DMSO is NOT legally available in the US for HUMAN
use except in certain VERY SPECIFIC (non-arthritic) cases. it IS however
used on horses and other animals by vets quite frequently. (which might
explain why zeez remembers taking her grandma out of state to a
feed store to get it).

Titania, is it readily available legally (either over the counter or by script)
down in Oz??? just curious....

Does she stretch after working out? that could be a huge problem. I actually read in Oxygen that could be a culprit.

Yeah. DMSO is easy to buy legally here. I buy it from a friend who runs a leading alternative care facility. It is common amongst the powerlifting community here too. What a pity it is such an issue in the US. I swear it is one of the most helpful substances I've ever used for joint health.

interesting. i've read many a scientific/medical article on its benefits, so
i dont doubt that in OZ most lifters would use it. in fact, its usage has
been shown to be very helpful in other medical cases also (not JUST
joint health) damned govt gets in the way bigtime sometimes.........

oh,well, back to my Gluco/Chondroiton pills.......
