Some background:
My son is 12 years old and weighs 180lbs, he is in phenomenal shape and is around 15% BF right now at 180 - 5'7 1/2". He wrestles for his school and for Sunkist Kids Wrestling Academy so right now he does school practice from 3:30 until 5:00 and then 6:30 until 8:30 M-Th with Fridays off then Saturday tournaments. Sunday he lifts weights - bench/squat/bent over rows and pullups.

He has competed for the last 4 years and does quite well usually, we compete from November until February in Folkstyle then take a month off and switch over to freestyle/greco season from March until July if he qualifies for nationals again this year.

These are his three filmed matches of the year and he was already 4-0 up until this tourney. He still gets psyched out by seeing the bigger 14 year olds at times and has some mental blocks occassionally until he decides to win as with a couple of these matches. The last match in part 2 of these videos he ends up pinning the kid but I ran out of memory.
Excuse the quality of these 1st two videos as I had to use an old crappy camera as I couldn't find my camcorder battery charger.

Yes I am the screaming parent...

SO COOL. My son's school just started practice on Monday. He's 5'5", 13 years old, size 11.5 shoe and only weights 93lbs. LOL. Meets wont start with us till january. I'll post a video when he finally starts meets.

Has your son ever wrestled a girl? Robert did for the first time last year. He pinned her put told her she had guts to wrestle guys.

My daughter is 9 and wrestles 78's on our Jr. High Team.
My middle son is 11 and wrestles 83's as well.
My two younger ones aren't as accomplished yet and don't seem to have the natural talent my son does but my daughter surely has the desire!

Good for her. I'm glad she does it.

Robert has played baseball and football (tackle) with girls. I told him it's just like the girls that play football, if they put the pads and helmet on then treat them just like any other team member. When he wrestled the girl I told him if she wanted to put the singlet and headgear on then treat her just like any other opponent.

Robert started his 6th grade year. Our Junior High is 6-8 right now but I think next year it will be 5-8.

He absolutely owned the kid in the first match, second video. He's strong for 12.

Don't take this the wrong way - but I remember wrestling, and if my dad was yelling "sit out" and letting my opponent know what to anticipate, it would be a very quiet ride home. Let him wrestle, and maybe you could could put some more silent effort into recording the pin.

They don't even hear the stuff you yell out. My son said he will hear his coach on occations. With that head gear and the concentration going on, it's all blocked out.

Just like MMA, your coach and others are yelling at you to do different things.

So I say cheer and yell all you want. Yell out a few moves. They may hear you and they may not. That is part of wrestling.

I heard every word my coach said, I didn't have a dad to be there. Coach used to call a fireman carry "red" a birdcage "tweet" double leg "deuce." It's fine to cheer, it's better when your kid wins because his parents didn't scream his next move to to the mat.

I understand broadcasting his move and as he get's higher then we'll refer to moves by names as well. What you didn't get to see was that last kid end up getting pinned and screaming as my son took him down and ran a power half on him. I knew the kid really wasn't a match for my son it was just a mental thing for him. You'll see a bit more of the quality wrestling in the next video I post here shortly from his match tonight.
:)
BTW I'm the coach and parent....

bring on the vids, I love 'em.

My kids school doesn't have a wrestling team, so I like to see vids of kids wrestling like I did.

OK here's a better representation of my son wrestling - the 2nd match Alex had a tough time with the kid 2 weeks ago at a take down tournament. The 1st match since the kid was going to go straight to his back we used as takedown practice.

My son wrestled for a few years. I loved watching the matches. Never missed one. It's great you are right there with him too. A lot of parents never even go. I taped them all too.

Well no updated videos but my son did win the Sun City Nationals in El Paso this last weekend and turned 13 on Sunday.
:D
He is now 17-2 this season!
I just have to figure out how to get him to Salt Lake City Dec 29th and Tulsa Jan 18-19th for some big national tournaments as well. The kid needs a sponsor already!!!

was glad to see your boy has pullups and rows in his training. i've coached wrestling for too many years, and have come to believe that pullups and chin ups, of various width grips, are the single best exercises a wrestler can do.

love the wrestling!!

Very nice!

We just had our first tourney for our middle school. 2/2/08

My son is a large 85lb 7th grader lol. He went 3-1 for the tourney. He has decided to drop all other sports and wrestle year round from here on out. I have two sons 16 AND 13. My 16 year old had a freshman year full of injuries so he went 16-10 at 135lbs.

I love coaching wrestling and have been doing it for 10 years total now.

That's awesome! I love coaching as well, my daughter is competing in the AZ Girls Wrestling State championship tomorrow, hoping to post her winning her group 3rd through 5th grade (she's in 4th).

I've worked out with the local high school to have my son join the football team in their off season conditioning program 4 days a week. The coaches were quite surprised when he showed up bigger and stronger than most the freshman! They even asked for him to skip 8th and come next year which we denied.

Congrats to all of your kids!.

I wrestled all the way through high school and took 3rd in Ohio my Senior season (Sucked I beat the kid the won states in duals)

My son has shown 0% intrest in wrestling, he tried for a year and only won 1 match, I told him that it takes allot of pratice and dedication but he wants instant gratification.

I think this is GREAT! Everyone here knows my love for MMA! My only regret for not having kids is that I'm not raising a house full of High School Wrestlers! That would be soooooo cool! And all of them aspiring to be like Randy Couture! :)

Also forgot to mention he's 5'10" now (13 years old) and 192lbs at around 15% BF and doing the following routine twice a week:
4x10 box squats
4x10 cleans
4x10 reverse grip bench
4x10 bent over rows
4x10 military press
4x10 wide grip lat pulls

Keeping the weight moderate for now as he also has 4x a week wrestling practice, just need to keep him focusing on working the muscles and tendon strength not so much building mass or pounding big weight yet. He does do 225 squats w/o a problem for 6 reps but we stay around 135 for his sets.

If you look at my latest update pic (shirt off) you can see the bruises from him working my guard and pounding my mid section. We got to see a live MMA fight in Reno when we were there for the Worlds 3 weeks ago and he though it was kick ass seeing guys get knocked out in person and wants to start doing Muy Thai and BJJ to round out his total package. :)

Well wrestling season has begun and we have our first match again tonight.
All 3 hooligans are wrestling for me, daughter in 4th grade 88's, middle son in 7th grade 103's and oldest in 8th grade heavyweight (210).

Last year my daughter took 2nd place at our district against 8th grade boys and won the girls state championship for elementary school, and middle son took 2nd as well at districts, oldest won AZ 200lb state champion and also won the freestyle/greco and took 2nd place for folkstyle at the USAW regionals to win the triple crown.
Looking forward to a great season and some more state and national championships!!!!
:)
Here's the family at a recent jet-pull charity event at work (our team won and oldest helped pull).
