I was at work the other day and all of a sudden these two guys walk in. One guy comes up to me and asks "where do you work out?". I tell him Gold's, I ask him what gym he goes to, and we get through all the small talk. We talk about general bodybuilding stuff, diets, routines, etc. and then we got into supplements.
The topic of fish oil came up first. I told him I get about 6g/day from fish oil caps. He said: "that's garbage, you'll piss it all out" and "you need to get it from `The Real McCoy [referring to getting the fish oil from actual fish]`". I told him that he's actually completely incorrect and to get even 6g of fish oil from actual fish you'd have to eat a LOT of fish everyday. Sometimes I even dose it up to as much as 10g/day, which would require almost twice as much.
Even after I explained that it's still benefical and a lot more convienent, he denied it. His friend also agreed; "you just piss it out", and "it doesn't work the same". So, argument #1 is over. Next he moves onto green tea. I tell him I get about 1g of green tea/day from extracts (pills). He says you should drink it instead, because it "doesn't get absorbed the same way". I told him it would have the exact same benefits but in a more cost-effective and conveinent form. He said, "listen, I'm 55 years old, I've been around the block a few times". I told him that age really doesn't give him any credibility and there has been endless research on the effects of green tea/EGCG. He still wouldn't agree with me.
Next comes vitamin C for a final third argument. He starts off with asking me "how much vitamin C do you get a day?". I tell him about 1g/day which I get from my multi alone. Then his "friend", who was about 35 years old, says "you do know the RDA is about 60mg, right?", "you could get that from an orange". I told him I know, but bodybuilders require much more than your average lazy ass / fat ass american. I also gave him the scenario I was in; I'm cutting, and I have no carb/low carb/high carb days [carb cycling]. How would I get my vitamin C on a no-carb day? An orange has like 30g sugar (carbs) per serving. And to get 1g of vitamin C I'd have to have like 16 oranges a day. They said I had a valid point, but it's "better to get it from the real thing" [even though they are both perfectly valid sources].
These are your typical "I don't believe in supplements"-types. So, by their logic, you should be eating 3lbs. of fish every day, drinking 2 gallons of green tea, and eating 20 oranges. Wow, that makes a lot of sense.
I wish I could've whipped out a laptop and got on PubMed to prove their asses wrong. I eventually just run out of things to say.

I hate talking to those types of people. They seem to start those conversations just so that they can tell you you're wrong about something. A guy I know was asking me about lifting once--don't remember why--and he had me compare "golf ball" (brachioradialis) and "horseshoe" (tricep) with him, then he started talking about protein. I was like "bla bla bla, I try to eat abou 300 grams a day" and he's like "nooooo no no no, that's WAY too much...your body can't absorb more than 100 grams a day!" like your stomach has some sort of shutoff switch that can tell when you reach 100 and then craps the rest out, regardless of when you eat it. Never mind that my "golf ball" and "horseshoe" were like twice the size of his. I didn't want to be a dick since he's sort of a friend and he was just trying to make conversation, but I wish people would think when they're speaking.
On a side note, what the hell is with the scenario here? Where do you work? How come they started talking to you? I have this mental picture of you standing behind a counter at a restaurant then two completely random guys walk up to you and say "what gym do you go to?" followed by going down their checklist of things to "get" you on. "Hey, let's get that guy!"

You actually just reminded me, they're also firm believers of the "40g of protein is all you can handle at once" theory. They know absolutely nothing.
I actually work at Wendy's (first job; I also do some Web development work on the side [freelance]). It's not too complex really--I was just on break, went out into the dining room, and all of a sudden they started talking to me.

I usually just nod my head and start singing in my head. You will never convince each other otherwise so might as well sing a good tune in your head and see if some of the lyrics sync up with the words they're spewing out at you. :)

Hahaha, I know what you mean. I've given up the fight, what I think about every time an Abercrombie starts in on me:
"Oh, so you mean that even though my LBM is 50lbs heavier than your total weight and I outlift you in every lift by at least 40lbs, you know more than I do...alright, I see your point"

And since size/strength =/= knowledge...I'll keep mixing my bulk creatine in with my oats and whey postworkout and you take your cell-tech/nitro-tech stack and you can ask why I don't "spike" my insulin levels...I'll laugh it off and say I don't have the money to use that "hardcore ****"...but I'll laugh as you get fat and I still have enough money to take your girl out later. mwuhahahaha!!!!!

HAHA thats some funny stuff... and ive heard all the same stuff.. but the thing that REALY pisses me off is when people in supplement stores tell u crap like that!
I had some lady in a small town supplent store tell me that Amino Acids are dangerous and should never be mixed with other supplements... I started laughing and just walked out.. i refuse to buy from idiots!
And my favorit one: a TEACHER actualy told me this..and she claims to have studied nutrition and crap like that.. she claimed that bodybuilding is plain dangerous because your blood vessels cant keep up with your muscle growth and that once u stop training you will loose all ur muscles in a matter of a couple of months and just have a bunch of blood vessels instead of muscle....
i even asked her if she was talking about the enlargement of the heart due to AAS use..and she said no AAS has nothing to do with it!
it realy bothers me that people that have no clue about bodybuilding and nutrition talk such nonsense.. specialy if they work in the field..and even worse if its a teacher!..
I got alot more crazy stuff like that but it would take to much time just to write it all down.. plus i get pissed off just thinking about it!
Hahaha, I know what you mean. I've given up the fight,
You can't give up the figft man ;), otherwise the world will only be filled with wonderful advice like the following:
"Why are you doing creatine, it's just a steroid and all your hair will fall out?"
"Glutamine has no side effects, so it must be great for you"
"The only gains anyone gets from creatine is water, so you are just bloating yourself out"
"Eating before a workout will make you lathargic because your body is expending all its energy digesting"
"If it doesn't taste great, why would you want to take it?"
.... and the list goes on.

If someone wants to listen, I'll help...but no one seems to want to listen. They know all and don't need advice from me!!! They be gettin' swole yo!!! I'm not saying I know everything...but I know SOMETHING!

HA! Funnyt you should mention that. I just got turned down for a job at GNC. (Needed extra money). Anyway I don't claim to know everything, hell I learn something new here everyday. I walk in to buy some stuff and it just so happens that the "new guy" is working that day... so I ask him a few questions. I start simple with protein and creatine. The guy had to read the label, then refer to his "book" behind the counter just to tell me what they do. We also have this guy I work with that gets all his information from this website then goes and tells me that all the stuff I take doesn't work and I should take so and so protien and creatine. Now normally I'd welcome advice... but not from a guy who weighs like 220 with 25% body fat and runs on a treadmill eating a snickers bar.

Just to add to our little discussion...
As some of you may or may not know, I play football at a D-1 school, it's not a major program but we have some very good athletes. Well, our starting LT and backup TE were just in my dorm talking about our crappy lifting program (based on HIIT pricipals...so I agree with them that it's crappy) And they were talking about how much time they spent in the weightroom in highschool. Apparently, our LT spent as much as 3 hours and our TE spent as much as 3.5 hours in the weightroom per day...which as we know is quite counterproductive considering the amount of cortisol produced in that amount of time and for many other factors. Then they asked me how much time I spent in the weightroom a day, and I said "never more than an hour to hour and a half and never for more than 4-5 days a week...sometimes 3x a week" (also, I came in as the strongest freshman and pretty close to breaking some school records as a true freshman). So they say "oh, so you're just naturally strong" I almost flipped out, just because I don't waste my f*cking time and I train smart and hard, I'm "JUST naturally strong"?!?! I just said "yeah, I guess so..."
I benched 125 just 3 years ago...now it's approaching 400lbs. I squatted 225 3 years ago...now it's well over 500 and probably approaching 600lbs. I was 210lbs at around 20% bf 3 years ago...now I'm 297lbs at 18% bf (and dropping)...I guess I'm just a natural.

Agreed!
I guess it's all basic psychology and stupidity... "you have something I don't and I refuse to admit that the only answer is hard work", because there always has to be a shortcut; it's the American way ;). The answer can never be, "you mean you worked harder and smarter and got results".
dbish77, come on, obviously if you had spent 3x as long in the weight room per day, you would be benching 1200lbs and squatting 1800lbs. :D

A lot of people overtrain and don't even realize it, as with your case. Hey, let them enjoy their crappy, delayed gains while you spend less time lifting and get better results. It's funny how people think all that matters is the time spent in the gym--not at all--it's the intensity.

You cant talk to those people, some people like my dad will be logic towards supps and such, some like people I have talked to (parents) will start talking about side effects of whey.
Yes I've heard it all from excessive pressure on kidneys to balls shrinking from having 3 shakes a week. Someone told me they dont want their son with man boobs when I was telling them that whey post workout is beneficial. Some think multi vitamins will make them unnatural. The list goes on. Avoid these people.
