I have a high school athlete wanting some help with power cleans. How high can we go before he'll have to use a hook grip?

dude is a beast but he has never been properly trained at all...he has always used pretty slow rep speed so he needs some explosive work.

Hopefully I will be able to work with him and start him on hang clean but I am just curious how heavy one can go with a regular grip.

depends but I would start him on hook grip as soon as possible as it helps the athlete pull with straighter arms.

Hook grip from the very start is the best way to go.

I know its "best", lol....let me rephrase the question.

The average HS or college athlete (NOT a weightlifter)....are they using hook grip?

I don't use hook grip...maybe I should start.

They're probably not. But in my opinion if you start this kid up with it, then that just makes him one step ahead of the competition that doesn't use it.

If he can hold it, he will be fine.

However it is very simple to do, so what is the problem?

When I had a car and was able to get coached at an O-Lifting gym, the guy had me doing hook-grip right off the bat.

I been into Olympic Weightlifting for about 12 months now.

I was taught to use hook grip from the very beginning, even when I was just using the bar.

The hook grip is essential if you want to lift heavy

Hook grip will let him relax his arm more since he doesn't have to tense them as much.
