Im a big fan of Pro-Complex the chocolate is really good but the rocky road is by far the best iv had.
100% whey is pretty much the same as pro-complex however pro-complex has the BCAA and the 100% whey doesnt but iv heard that the double rich chocolate is really good

I don't know much about the flavors of protein powder, I've bought two and they were awful, one was GNC whey vanilla, I think... however, I do know about cooking ingredients!
If you want to buy cocoa powder to add to protein drinks, don't buy regular baking cocoa powder, which is best for baking brownies or cakes, but rather buy DUTCHED cocoa powder which tastes better in hot chocolate, or used "raw" or unbaked. Regular baking powder tastes more bitter when used in drinks. Neither of them should have any added sugars or sweeteners, they're just different versions (chemically, pH is different) for different uses. According to Cook's Illustrated, blind tastes tests prove that the taste of dutched cocoa powder is far superior to regular baking powder for drinking, and regular baking cocoa powder tastes best in brownies, cookies, cakes, etc.
BTW, thanks for asking this question. I've been wondering what the best tasting powders are. I can always alter the protein content of a shake by using milk, or adding peanut butter, etc, but I can't stand a bad tasting protein powder.
Good tasting food is essential to my quality of life!

I recently bought Met-Rx Long Range whey protein (chocolate flavor) from GNC for $12.50 for a 5 lb. tub and I must say its the best tasting whey protein I've tasted despite only trying three other brands (N-Large, Nitro-Tech, ON). Two scoops per serving and after only purchasing it after 2 1/2 weeks, I finished it because it tastes too good! I'll probably end up buying another tub from my local GNC because for $12.50 for a 5 lb. is a deal. As for gains, I feel Nitro-Tech gave me the most bulk and muscle satisfying feeling.. but the taste is horrendous!

12.50 for 5 pounds? Dude that's insane. I hear about people gettin these great deals for protein at their GNC's.. why don't the ones near me ever have any kind of closeout deals? I think my only hope is to buy some off ebay, but the shipping prices aren't always friendly. I just purchased 5 lbs. double rich chocolate ON, and 5 lbs. of the new gold standard rocky road (just to give it a shot). But dammit, that is not enough! I demand cheap whey *..pounds fist*

I'm relatively new to bodybuilding, and even newer to supplements! I've only tried three protien powers:
ON's 100% Whey Strawberry (my first attempt): I had nothing to compare it to at the time, since this was my first, but now I know this stuff sucks! It was almost enough to make me wretch alone or with water, it was barely tolerable with milk. Best combination I found was to take it with apple juice, then it was adequate.
MRM's Metabolic Whey Strawberry-Banana: This stuff is awesome! (I just got it yesterday). This stuff tastes so good, I could eat it like candy - plain! Taste is vaguely reminiscent of Runtz candies. It tastes great just by itself or in water (the only way I've used it so far).
ON's 100% Casein Vanilla: Pretty good. Not bad in water, but better in milk. Tastes like you're eating vanilla flavored whipped cream, only richer and heavier - almost like cheesecake. Has a slight strange sorta metallic aftertaste. Doesn't mix very easily, though.
Since I have such limited experience, I'd be interested to know how these (especially the last two) compare to other protiens you guys may have tried.

GNC whey is way too expensive, atleast where I live.
That's why God let bodybuilding.com be! :D
I'm buying this week the 10Lb Optimum 100% Whey Protein (which I think it's the one you're refering to) from bb.com, here in El Salvador the price tag at GNC is $160! Wanna hear another crazy price tag? Xenadrine-EFX @ $80 WITH Gold Card! $80 for something that hardly burns fat!
My-my I guess that's the reason one GNC store closed here ;).

Really, bleh, I ordered that stuff and I don't think I"ll be able to finish it. The only way I can eat it is to mix it with oatmeal and a whole lot of cinnamon to hide the taste, and even then I only use 1/2 scoop.

I just bought PVL's Nateral Whey Gourmet in their Vanilla flavour. It has a good taste without that funny sucralose flavour that other powers have - its sweetened with stevia. It also comes in Chocolate malt and Strawberry Banana. I bought single serving samples of those to try.

Please let us know how the chocolate flavour is. I'm thinking about purchasing it and was wondering how it is. I really like the PVL other flavors so I'm thinking I might like their chocolate flavor more than some other brands. Has anyone ever tried PVL's chocolate and how does it compare to other chocolate brands?
Thanks!

I tried my one serving samples of PVL Nateral Whey Gourmet in Real Chocolate Malt and Real Strawberry Banana Smoothie. Both had good taste but Chocolate is the best of the three flavours (See earlier post on the Vanilla flavour). The strawberry banana smelled like the real thing but the taste was blander than the smell.
I've had both ON Optmum Whey in Strawberry and Choc. Mint.
Strawberry was barely tolerable in water, a little better in milk.
Chocolate Milk is decent in water, really, really good in milk.

Optimum Nutrition Pro-Complex is by far the best protein supplement ever made. It has the most protein, the best types of protein, the most variety of proteins, the highest bcaa content, the highest glutamine content, the most percentage of whey protein isolate, the highest percentate of protein per serving, the best taste, the best mixability and its at a great cost and most importantly, it works! I have yet to find a better protein supplement on the market. Stood my this product for 3 years now and dont plan to switch any time soon! Dont agree then try it for yourself before you knock it!

On 100% Whey:
The chocolate mint smells like Andie's chocolate mints (AWESOME), but sure doesn't taste like it...I throw in 1/4 teaspoon unsweetened cocoa powder (Nestle), 1/2 teaspoon fat free coffee creamer (powder), and 1 Splenda, and it's MUCH better. With those little additions, it tastes just as good as it smells, with WATER no less. Nice and milk chocolate creamy-like, with the hint of mint. It may be even better with milk, but I'm currently on a methane strike :D
Their strawberry isn't good at all. I haven't tried adding anything to it yet. Again, this is with water. I'm sure it's a little better with milk, but I couldn't tell you.
Im a big fan of Muscle Milk's Vanilla Cream
and shockingly, i think GNC's 100% whey Chocolate is pretty darn good too!

I just finished a 5 pounder of the chocolate and going to try the vanilla tomorrow. They used to sell strawberry which was the best tasting protein I have ever had, it had real bits of strawberry in it. But I guess they discontinued it; haven't seen it at the local costcos for several months.

I'm currently using GF-Pro's Orange Cream, and it is great whether you mix it in milk, water or OJ. Tastes like those 50/50 ice cream bars. They have a bunch of other fruit flavors, I may end up trying them all.
The only draw back at this point is that they don't make anything larger than the 2 lb tub, although I read that they are working on getting the 5 lb tubs out.

Just a warning, Dymatize whey protein gets VERY bad VERY fast.
You get really sick of it and eventually it starts to taste terrible. I've had that with all of them, and most people i know have experience the same thing.
The chocolate dymatize i was able to use for quite a long time, maybe 10-15 pounds straight, but the others i couldn't get through 5lbs.

I bought 10 lbs of ON Whey yesterday for $51 from GNC ;)
Eh... I guess that's not bad for 10 lbs., but I've found I can get it consistently for a good price with bodybuilding.com.
http://www.bodybuilding.com/store/opt/whey.html
My local gym and bb.com are fairly competitive. My gym owner sells the 5 lbs. containers for $29.00, bb.com sells them for $28.89. When you factor in taxes and shipping, bb.com is a little more expensive, but when my gym owner doesn't have my favorite flavor in stock when I run out, bb.com is where I go. Buying online also helps when you live "out in the Styx" like I do. :D
By the way, the Cookies & Cream flavor of Optimum Nutrition 100% Whey has an awful metallic after tastes. When I finished my first glass, I thought, "Uh... did I just drink Mercury?". I still more than half a container left. I guess the Research & Development group didn't quite get the "Cookie" and "Cream" part down. :)

You sure that's not just from the water quality out in the "Styxx"? :D Yeah, I agree that the cookies & cream flavor isn't palatable. Perhaps it was an accidental discovery when trying to make a new flavor. If you mix it with milk it's not nearly as bad. However, you'll still need to hold your breath, plug your nose, close your eyes, say three hail marys and pretend it's a different flavor in order to not feel sick afterwards.

Muscle Milk and Simply Protein are my favs.
I have to agree with Lats McGee Muscle Milk has an awesome taste. Not only that but usually proteins either taste good with water or milk. This supplement has the ability to be used with both while utilizing the same taste. If you go to GNC at the store it will run you around 32 bucks but if you go to muscledepot.com you can easily get it for 25 including shipping. Good source of protein and it also increases your creatine output. I reccomend the strawberry, vanilla and coffee flavor.

Palm oil and kernel oil are hydrogenated fats. These can't be broken down by the body, and often get deposited into bad places (fat deposits, arteries, etc.).

Dont you think that if the major conern for protein was the taste that many of these companies would be out of a job. while taste is important the most important part is if it works or if it doesnt. if your looking for taste why even us a protein powder... just drink chocolate/vanilla/strawberry shakes mix an egg or two ... many of these GREAT tasting powders are compensating for crappy product which equals crappy results... how else are they going to get you to buy it. if you want results stick to what works and has been proven, not by how good it taste.

I liked the mint as well, however it's a disappointment that it doesn't mix well with other typical protein shake additives. (ie bananas, juice, fruits, etc.)
Just straight with water or milk, it's excellent.

I also bought some BSN Lean Dessert Protein in the cinnamon roll flavor. I bought it to take at night when I go to bed. ;) It smells better than it tastes. When you mix it, it's like ultra thick even with water. 1-10 scale for taste I would give it a 7.5.

I liked the mint as well, however it's a disappointment that it doesn't mix well with other typical protein shake additives. (ie bananas, juice, fruits, etc.)
Just straight with water or milk, it's excellent.

I have ON Chocolate Mint, and I think that it is absolutely disgusting. I'm going to have to try some of that Jay Robb's Whey Protein stuff.

i have tried every one of the optimum flavors, and i like double rich chocolate, chocolate mint, and strawberry the best. i can't drink milk, so i have to mix my shakes into water. i was a little disapointed by the rocky road. it smells really good, but it just doesn't taste as good as the others. i don't like the cookies & cream because there's a lot of crap in it that i don't want in my system.

I just got this chocolate stuff called "Body Fortress". It tastes like friggin choclate milk. I feel like i'm cheating. Really great taste for any whey protien. Especially considering the fact that I got it for $11 at Wal Mart.
You gotta be kidding. I bought one of those "body fortress" protein jugs the other day - and let me say that it was the WORST tasting crap I have ever had - and I have tried many different brands of protein over the years. I spit it out right away and took the jug back to WalMart. No wonder it's so cheap. Crap, just pure crap. BTW, I like Maximum Protein, by Southern Pharm. Optimum is always good too. But Muscle Milk is the king, IMHO. Not just in taste, but also in overall quality. It is a little pricey, but it is sure worth it.

Seriously, Muscle Milk is definitely not a protein powder. Considering it has 350 calories and 18g's of fat, it really is just 2% chocolate milk with "muscle" substituting the word chocolate. Obviously, it only tastes good because of this high fat content. Really it's nothing more than a glorified weight-gainer.

If you are going for just pure (well mostly) protein powder I would have to say ON Mint Chocolate is pretty good. One of the few that I did enjoy through out supplement experimenting. In terms of my regular weight gainer etc... NLarge II tastes rather good, and it takes a lot longer to get sick of in my opinion, almost like a real chocolate shake. From all the carbs and fat probably though.

Man, I just tried a sample of Jay Robb's Chocolate Whey Protein, and I'd have to say it ROCK'S!!! I tried the Graham Cracker from VPX and almost puked, then I tried BSN's lean Dessert Protein Cinnamon Roll and Coconut Chocolate Bar, and both those tasted very good... BUT, hands down, Jay Robb's tasted the best... And the more I'm reading aroung the net, the more I'm convinced I should start buying it (even if it's a bit pricey)..
Here's one review I found.

Balance ultra filtered Ion-exchange whey protein.
Its healthy and natural... considering people who do weights a LARGE part of their diet is protein powder, its important to get a healty one...
This one has been filtered to eliminate bacteria, impurities from milk etc. has no artificial sweeters, colours, flavours, and very very low in carbs/fat.
Only problem is takes a couple of minutes to mix it into milk. For taste, add "real" honey, banana, cocoa, and linseed oil on top of the protein. Blending it heats up the other ingridients honey/linseed oil, so only blend the banana if u use one.
It takes awesome with fresh made fruit juce like apple/grape, pineapple.

Of course it has protein and can be considered a protein powder. It also has many other good things in it too, which is why you are most likely saying it isn't a protein powder. Do you consider it a weight gainer or MRP then because it doesn't really fit into those categories either??

it is an MRP. to be considered a protein powder yet only contain 43-51% protein is really pushing boundaries don't you think? Did anyone call the original Met-RX a protein powder? No, they called it a MRP.

I tried Muscle Milk Chocolate Milk flavor this weekend and was very impressed. The sales guy at the local shop said it reminds him of Nestle Chocolate milk, and he was right. 2 scoops + 12oz milk makes it taste almost like the Nestle Chocolate that I remember as a kid. There wasn't a strong aftertaste, nor did it clump in my shaker bottle (which the salesman threw in for free just for trying Muscle Milk).
I'm not really a huge fan of chocolate flavor drinks, but this Muscle Milk, I have to refrain from drinking every 3 hours or else I can kiss my wallet goodbye. The local 24hour Fitness had them on sale for $19.99 a couple of weeks ago, and now I'm kicking myself for not stocking up.

This one is easy but I don't know if you guys carry is Stateside.
PVL, Whey Gold, Vanilla Ice Cream. It's a company out of British Columbia Canada and my god is it good! They claim to have the highest quality Whey on the planet (don't they all..lol) but it does actually taste like a Vanilla Ice Cream shake. It's also lactose free which is awesome because most others Whey's give me nasty gas..lol. I wish BB.com had it because it's not cheap in the stores and I would definately order it from you guys. Cheers
Your right on that one I have the PVL Vanilla ice cream. Best tasting protein powder around orange creamsicle is the best though out of the chocolate, vanilla, orange creamsicle. Add half orange juice half water and man its a treat to drink. There the same company that makes whey gourmet protein powder, if you like the vanilla you'll love their whey gourmet powder. My g/f bought the raspberry flavour, it tastes like juice! It reminded me of raspberry jello.
BTW where do you buy your protein from? I live in Toronto and buy mine at SND on yonge st. Go to the website to see if you can get it cheaper there.
snd canada is the name of the web page add the .com to end of it.
I have to admit I went to Costco about 2 weeks ago and EAS was selling their 6lb protein powder for under $40. I thought I'll give it a try. Its a good chocolate taste, good for the price and it had some good protein in it. I believe its 22g per scoop.

Easy for you to say..........your flavorings could make beach sand taste delicious. :) I do agree though, there is a lot of junk out there that "tastes good" but then again, so does chocolate cake........doesn't make it good for you. Great flavor is just an added benefit.

I've seen alot of folks arent happy with the choc mint whey from ON. You guys might wanna consider just getting mint extract and just adding it to regular choc whey. i myself do it and love it, havent mixed it with water yet only milk, but i think it tastes phenominal with 1/2 capfull of extract with one scoop of ON and 8oz milk. kinda like an andes mint or peppermint patty.

(ON) Optimum 100% Whey Chocolate flavor
Tastes good, mixes well w/ skim milk or water, digests comfortably, and most importantly gets results.
I tried Strawberry once and it tasted pretty toxic so I'll be sticking with the Double Rich Chocolate which I like a lot.
The bottom line is since all the popular brands are pretty similar in specs, it pretty much comes down to what tastes right for you otherwise it's a total waste of money because you won't be in a hurry to drink enough of it to see any benefits.
I'm using Optimum Nutrition 100% Whey Protein Vanilla flavor. I prefer using grape juice instead of milk for my post-workout shake. The problem I'm having is that when I mix the powder with juice in the blender it foams up quite a lot expanding to almost double the original size. Hasn't been very easy to drink.
Anyone else have this problem? Any ideas to work around or solve this? Maybe with milk it doesn't matter as much and results in a nice milkshake.

Chocolate flavor with water or low-fat milk in the blender comes out great. It's hard to go wrong with the the chocolate one so give it a try before switching to something else--you might like it a lot. My only complaint with Optimum is it's imported here from the US so it costs more than the local stuff but it's been worth it.

i've heard that biotest grow was great tasting product but unfortunately they have discontinued it, but they still might make Grow Lo-Carb. The original Grow is hard to find but u can still find it at some places. but my favorite is still the original, designer whey(strawberry). also products that have milk protein isolate or concentrate seem to taste better than whey's. These powders are little thicker and have better texture. which is why muscle milk tastes so good, its basically flavored milk.

for example, i have an aversion to cottage cheese, yet i found a way to not only choke it down, but actually look forward to eating it by using bsn.

Beverly International Muscle Provider chocolate flavor is very good. Easily beats ON chocolate. Haven't tried many different brands. MM cookies and cream is awesome but can't be considered a protein powder.
I just tried this new protein from this dude at a gym sampling stuff and damn is it good. It actually had little chocolate chips in it at the end, what a bonus when your dieting. It was some new company called Allmax the stuff was called Isoflex.
Damn, I've tried everything and never tasted such a wicked clean protein. Honestly nestly quick tastes good but this stuff only had 1 carb! You gotta try this stuff, I actually grabbed some from the guy that day. They actually had a damn tasty bar also! My vote goes to this Isoflex !

Ok I've been reading this thread for a bit and thought I'd throw in my few cents...
As far as ON..
a) Vanilla is ok with milk
b) choc is decent with milk
c) choc/mint is decent with milk
All above I can only do with milk, not water. But when I tried stirring the mint/choc instead of shaking it, it improved the taste by 10 fold. Just like a nice glass of choc milk.
Now I'm on isopure apple/melon, and it has to be ice cold in order for me to drink it, but when its cold, the stuff is pretty good. Actually look forward to drinking it. And it has cut my calories down a ton bc I dont take it with milk, just ice cold water.

Just got a nice bonus at work, so I dropped $500 on protein powders with BB.com (Hey, you guys need to offer a discount plan to your frequent flyers! I can't use another water/shaker bottle!) Here's what I found out. PrimaForce Juicy Watermelon and Grape Splash are the two best. If you like milky tasting stuff, I love Prolab Isolate Strawberry, all of the Supreme Wheys from Dymatize....I especially like the Root Beer Float and the Butter Cream Toffee. Wish they made a Coca-Cola and Ginger Ale that I could mix with milk! Yum! All of the Syntrax products are very good. They have two new ones out: Natural Peach and Tealicious. Advertised as "all natural" at over $32 for two pounds! The thing that makes them "natural" is that they don't use Splenda or Equal as sweeteners. Instead you get stevia leaf. Has a weird taste. Give me the Splenda. Much cheaper too. The Scitec Protein Delites are all tastey. They give you little bits of chocolate or freeze-dried fruits to enhance the flavor. Silly, but if you like spoiling yourself, why not? Stay away from the Fruitblast line. Initial taste is good, then all of a sudden its like you stuck your nose in the cow's ass! Can't figure that one out. ON is pretty weak, despite wide popularity. Isopure is good and it comes in packages that you can carry with you. Beverly tastes a little gritty to me. If I have missed anything, PM me.....I have probably tried it. My boyfiend teases me that I have nice pecs, but they cost me about $10,000 in supps! He probably isn't far off of the mark! Peace.

Both the Natural Peach and Fuzzy Navel products by Syntrax have a very strong and pleasant peach flavor. The Navel version has the added kick of orange juice as well. I like them both. Like I said (see above) the Natural has a fancy sweetening mechanism in place, whereas the other products use either Equal (aspartame) or Splenda. I am starting to like Splenda products much more these days. I mixed the Natural Peach today with skim milk and it was orgasmic! Like a peaches and cream sundae! ErgoPharm is excellent, I like the cherry and blueberry flavors best.

it's pretty good, the cinnamon roll is my favorite though... not a fan of the choco-coconut one, and the banana pudding flavor is slowly growing on me - it's a bit sweet, and the banana imitation is a little off, but it's not horrifyingly disgusting

Ive tasted probably 20 different kinds of protein powders. And gagged through almost all of them. Its usually the generic stuff that makes you choke, GNC Brand, Vitamin World Brand, or even Designer Whey. But the brand that Ive used for the past couple of years and never found myself grow tired of is the OptimumNutrition 100% Whey. As far as Whey protein, thats the way to go. As far as Weightgainer protein, I found that the Optimum Nutrition Serious Mass tastes the best. And for casein protein, I love Nitrotech Nighttime. Ive tried the Probolic SR and it was ok, and Ive tried the ON's version, but still I think the best casein is MuscleTech's brand.
If anyone gives a damn, I personally prefer the Chocolate and Strawberry flavors. My advise is to NEVER get vanilla. No matter how good the brands version of chocolate or strawberry taste, vanilla taste like friggen chalk.

I agree, yah, maybe people are saying the same brands, but this helps others see how many people like a particular brand, just because one guy says this protein powder is great doesn't necessarily mean I'll like it, but if 100 people say it is, there is a much better chance.

Not bad: Cyclosport Complete Whey Cookies n' Cream- A decent c n' c flavor. Not overwhelming, perhaps a mild aftertaste... 4.5 stars

Q. I consume about 5 VP2 shakes a day. I have been premixing them with water in the morning into a single container and drinking it gradually throughout the day. Does the premixing with water change or affect the quality of the protein? If not, would premixing the protein with water and storing it for a week affect the protein?
A: I'm not crazy about premixing supplements. There are some types of supplements that it is absolutely forbidden to put them in a liquid for extended periods of time. Creatine is certainly one of these supplements. Glutamine is another. Shakes with added vitamins and minerals should not be premixed for very long before drinking either.
VP2 Whey Isolate is a hydrolyzed whey isolate that is produced in a very unique and specific manner. It's comprised completely of native protein fractions that are not adulterated with other nutrients. This being the case there should not be a problem premixing VP2 the way you are doing it. I wouldn't however, recommend keeping it in solution much longer than one day at a time before drinking it. I can't say that there would be a problem for sure but I also can't, with all certainty, say there would not be a problem.
VP2 is the most effective protein available for delivering muscle building nitrogen. It also provides certain functional properties not available in any other protein. To date no research has been performed on its extended stability in a liquid. Because of the lack of research in this area it can only be advised to limit its extended stay in liquid to hours and not days.
